One thing you gotta appreciate about the Raimi J. Jonah is that he didn't sell Peter out when the Goblin attacked him. I always liked that little detail for his character

@@Isaac-kl6zg didn't they also show J Jameson as very sympathetic towards Spiderman in the comics multiple times?
@@Isaac-kl6zg oh i got what you mean. Yeah. I justk now he also had a raimi moment in the comics aswell.
@@Isaac-kl6zg in the original comics he still sympathizes with spiderman though. not just later comics. he literally admits everything he does is due to his own jealousy and insecurities.
*Fun fact:* The reason why many of Spider-Man’s villains were originally just standard, clear cut bad guys was because of Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko’s political views. He was a moral objectivist and didn’t believe in grey morality or even the notion of a villain having a sympathetic origin. This actually led to some conflict between him and Stan Lee, apparently even Stan thought that the villains needed something more to flesh them out lol. Ditko was only okay with Spider-Man being an asshole (early Spidey could be a massive dick at times) because he was just a teenager who didn’t know any better.
Thanks for the fun fact daroachdogjr
Ditko's Mr. A is a great example for this
The preoccupations of DITKO, LEE, and KIRBY were very apparent in their work (even in the mainstream). Few ppl in any medium have their level of influence and their amount of freedom. The funny think about it is, LEE is probably the most instrumental to why the Marvel Superheroes were so popular (with his characterizations) but he was also the least interesting and most strictly capitalistic of the bunch.
Ditko was really smart about incorporating politics and psychedelia into his books and Kirby was good at world-building (and obviously the amazing art). Lee was just good at writing dialogue.
Funny to think about.
@@iansmart4158 It really goes to show that characterization and dialogue can really push things over the edge eh? I think that it's really a testament to all the talent of those days that they created these lasting legacies. Lee might be overrated but he did great work, as did Ditko and Kirby. I appreciate everything those men did!
@Jonathan Jones he was good at creating relatable characters. I’d argue his impulse to make them normal ppl is what makes them so timeless (having the Fantastic Four deal with marital issues, NYC aren’t, and discrimination was a master stoke)
He didn’t really do anything with the x men tho. Not till Wisemen and Claremont did they become great. But he definitely planted the seeds.
Ralph can come off as one of the more deadpan members of the podcast sometimes, so seeing him geeking out over No Way Home is a treat.
Hearing Ralph just immediately going “IT WAS SO GOOD IT MADE ME CRY” put a big smile on my face (:

No Way Home made me realize that, while I enjoyed the previous Tom Holland movies, they never felt truly 'Spider-Man' to me. NWH just embodies what Spider-Man is all about and I love it.
I agree with Adum that Aunt May should’ve given the “Great Responsibility” speech a little earlier before she dies, but then again it would kinda make her death seem more predictable, since we know that anytime Uncle Ben says that to Peter he immediately dies
100% agree. I laughed too on my first watch. Idk why Ralph said it fit. It was so eh
Hey o, it's Roach Dogg jr
Mays death was fairly predictable anyway. The second Peter let all the villians into Happy's apartment I knew either Happy or May was getting offed.
Tobey maguire should’ve said it
@@RamiroEloy1997 True
Spiderman No Way Home was definitely based on nostalgia and aimed at the fans, but it was done in a solid fun way that it was enhanced by such things. Fans being catered too ain't a bad thing when done with care.
As a fan, I'd have preferred being catered to with an actually coherent story.
The Spider-Man No Way Home discussion is probably the longest discussion of a movie in Sardonicast history! Very impressive.
It's funny that Alex wanted to know what someone who hasn't seen many of the other spider-man movies would think of nwh, because that was basically my experience. My friend called me out of the blue to go watch it, and I had only seen homecoming and Andrew's first one and the only exposure I had to the raimi trilogy was through memes (which prepared me surprisingly well).
Despite that I absolutely loved it, it was a great theater experience, and the characters really sold themselves even without a lot of the context. Also the film just does a pretty decent job of summarising the prior movies without you seeing them. It was funny though that because I hadn't really watched their films I ended up being way happier seeing daredevil than any other returning character lol.
Afterwards I actually went back and watched all of the previous Spider-man movies, and then re-watched nwh and I think it held up quite well. Very excited to see where they take Holland's spider-man next, and I'd love a Garfield one if they can write it to do his spider-man justice.
Love Ralph's enthusiasm in this episode! Also love the "WHAT" Adum gave at 39:48 XD
Same. Gotta love when Ralph's enthusiasm for movies are shown!!
Yeah
The worst thing about the Holland suit is that the template is a perfect replica of the Romita design from the comics but they add so much unnecessary shit to it every movie for merchandising, I'm so happy the new suit is literally just that design brought to life
no way home's doctor strange action scene made me even more excited for multiverse of madness. sam raimi is a really creative director and im very curious to see how wacky and crazy he can get with a movie like this (assuming they give him the right amount of creative control)
also holy shit it's been awhile since i've seen ralph this enthusiastic about a big budget blockbuster movie
I'm afraid he's going to be crushed under the marvel look and cinematography that it's so bland, (excepting for Gun and Waititi I think), I hope he has room to breath and make something great
@@vjara94 if Gunn and Waititi managed it, I think Raimi will easily go beyond the standard Marvel look.

Missed your shot for "I'm something of a Sardonicast myself"
“So we’re some sort of sardonicast huh”
With great power comes great Sardonicast
I love hearing Ralph being so excited about No Way Home. Ralph being so positive is great
I think there is a big difference between "references" and "repeating"
Big Bang Theory and Ready Player One are references. They just say the name of the thing and it's a big moment.
Saying "may the force be with you" at the end of Return of the Jedi isn't a "reference" to A New Hope. It's repeating a mantra of the universe.
Likewise, "with great power comes great responsibility" told to Peter as a counter point to him wanting to give up isn't a "reference". Spider Man has always been about sacrifice. He has been given a burden and what makes him a great person is that he's willing to shoulder it, even though he didn't ask for it and it's costing him everything.
it’s totally unmotivated in the film lol how is may’s death anything to do with responsibility? it’s a reference to the universe/world of spiderman. it’s not authentically coming from the film. hell, he should’ve taken the lesson from iron man. would’ve made way more sense. or if she actually died in service of her ideals instead of literally standing still and waiting for it.
1:16:50 "One of you guys has to explain that whole "squirt" thing to me." is so hilarious out of context lol
Tom Hardy’s only purpose for this universe was to bring the goo
I think Tom Hardy will come back as a variant of Brock, kinda like how J Jonah is similar but different now
Venom lore in the comics is kinda crazy. In every universe, all Venoms are interconnected. Knull, the main bad guy from Venom, can kill a Celestial. I think that's the plan for a Venom/Spiderman crossover that they want to do. Have Tom Hardy's Venom, Tom Holland's Spider-Man, probably Flash Thompson, and maybe Andrew Garfield's Spiderman since they are listening to positive reviews with his performance in NWH, go against Knull in planet Venom.
It’s a fun crowd pleaser, It does feel like a fan fiction
Yeah, definitely
Technically every Spider-Man movie is fan fiction
@@blueberrydenim4807 Yeah I agree, the comic source material will always be light years ahead of these film adaptations.
But the concept of magic portals being used to pull out of continuity characters in for a one and done adventure feels like cheesy fan fiction.
@@CC______ Good fan fiction will always be superior to commercial stories, because fan fiction is unshackled from expectations or the need to make profit. It can do whatever it wants even if nobody likes it, the purest form of self-expression, which is what all writing strives to be.
@@genyakozlov1316 More like the purest from of self indulgence. The rules aren’t there to “shackle” anyones creativity. It’s not enough to just have a fun idea.
An annoying part of the film is the fact we were meant to get post credit scenes of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their respected universes but we had to set up Venom smh
Why didn’t they just do that instead of the doctor strange trailer? They released it online like a week later
Wonder if that's setting up more appearances by the two 🤔 I wouldn't mind another Tobey Spiderman project with Raimi in the MCU now. A show could be cool.

If Adum likes the Doctor Strange action scene, I'm genuinely curious what he'll think of the 2016 film. Even has Tilda in it. I hope he checks it out for his 2016 list, though I doubt it'll make the list.
Are you a fan of the 2016 film?
Doctor Strange I think is still one of the better Marvel movies. I think its biggest sin is that it has too good a supporting cast. Mads Mikkelsen is still good but it absolutely wastes Rachel McAdams and Michael Stuhlbarg.
Yeah, it was one of the last movies I saw in theaters
it's basic MCU crap with some sprinkles on it. completely wastes Mads Mikkelsen. he'd probably give it a 5 or 6
@just2good I agree you should be the guest when they review it
I haven't seen Ralph love a movie this much since Gotti
I honestly have to agree with adum on the whole great power conversation. the movie would've flowed a lot better if she said it right after they fix doctor octavious or better yet, when aunt may introduces peter to norman osborn.
Call me crazy but if Aunt May wasn't the one saying it, Tobey saying the line would have been cool with me. It's like passing the torch and wisdom from Uncle Ben to Tom.
I'm with you. I think the distinction between the perspectives here is between Ralph and Alex viewing the line as integral to the character, while Adam is arguing that it falls more in line with a reference and is part of movie history rather then the character itself. So from Ralph's pov as someone who deeply loves this character, the scene works because he loves the line and the impact. But if you view it like a reference, it does become really corny and I think Adam's perspective is what you get. Both are valid, just depends on the person.
I loved this video! Every second of it!
The video hasn't been out long enough for you to possibly have seen every second of it.
@@HOTD108_ it's up early for patreon viewers -_-
Gonna try to help Alex finish what he was getting at around the @13:30 mark. It makes sense for NWH to have the nostalgia or be retroactively making fun of the old movies because those events occured in another universe from this movie. They actually have a reference to go to, because those characters experienced it. It makes absolutely NO SENSE for aladdin or lion king to reference the original movies, because those movies don’t exist in those universes. Garfield making fun of his villains works, because his character experienced the events of those movies. The Genie breaking the fourth wall and referencing events from the old Aladdin makes no sense unless we’re to believe that in that universe the original Aladdin exists. Just fourth wall breaking with no purpose or logic.
I still miss some of the quirky side characters in the Raimi trilogy. The "give me rent" landlord, Bruce Campbell's cameos, the Indian pizza boss guy from Spider-Man 2, even the "nice costume" guy in the elevator. Just love those funny little bits
I know everyone has said this already, but Ralph’s fanboying is infectious…😂
The cool thing about Ralph and Alex's bet is that both of their reasonings were (most likely) right. Ralph thought Venom would be included because Sony would want to shoehorn him in to capitalize off of the character, while Alex said they wouldn't because they want to maintain the purity of the MCU brand of quality. Given that Venom did show up but had no bearing on the plot and was whisked away almost immediately, the signs point to Sony pressuring Marvel to include him but Marvel just throwing him in to say that they did and to introduce the venom symbiote into the MCU. I have no way to know if those were the actual reasons behind Venom's appearance-but-not-actually, but it would be hilarious if it was a result of Marvel saying "fine, we'll include your character in the movie" and then turning around and chucking him in for two seconds before deleting him from the universe.

I dont think Ive ever seen Adam this positive about a Marvel movie.
At least not since Infinity War.
Or possibly Spider Man Into The Spiderverse.
Ralph's has happiness makes me happy
8:57 Hearing this interaction makes me happy c:
I loved all the boys being positive about an MCU film. Adum was majorly wrong about the ‘great power’ line but it was cool to see them hyped about Spidey.
31:02 This was probably the part that got the biggest reaction out of me. I have completely forgotten about that theme and when it played with that slow pan in, I couldn't contain it and quietly made an "ahhhh" sound.
Yeah the inciting incident of NWH was dumb as hell. Dr. Strange literally telling Peter how dumb he is while still doing the spell was nerve racking.
There’s a fanboy theory going around the interwebs that it wasn’t the real Dr Strange but homeboy from the multiverse (I think the one from the Loki series..?) If you watch the Dr Strange preview at the end of the movie he asks Wanda about the multiverse and finds out the biggest threat is “him”. Or, one could argue he is kind of an arrogant prick who likes showing off his powers, so… take your pick. Or it’s just dumb. Always an option!
There’s two easy fixes I can see them doing to save it. Either just have it so that’s not Dr Strange that was in the movie and rather an imposter, or a more complex one I’d really like. I think it would be pretty cool if Dr Strange is borderline depressed and the tile of this unfeeling sorcerer supreme is getting to him on a mental level. The fact that he had to kill Tony just to have his universe survive until he has to inevitably do that again with whoever comes next in the crosshairs of “sacrifice to save the universe” would probably give him a massive amount of survivors guilt. I’d like it if all of his dumb actions were just him being subconsciously suicidal and just wanting to die. Have it kinda be like a Rick Sanchez angle of, “there’s an infinite amount of universes, there’s no point in any of this”
Ralph sounds so passionate about the movie and I'm so here for it. I cried like 4 times during, it was lightning in a bottle watching that for the first time. I gotta say though the great power comes great responsibility made me cringe coming from "Wine Aunt" Aunt May. Like, they never thought to build her up to that in the other movies whenever she showed up.
She worked at a homeless shelter, she was all about helping people
@@chillinsquirtle yeah that did help, and don't get me wrong her death was gut wrenching thanks to both actors great performances but I never got the sense that was what May was all about from the overall writing across all the movies. Unless I just completely forgot lol
@Kaladins fair enough!
"It ain't easy being cheesy" caught me so off guard holy shit!
Spiderverse didn't take anything away from the multiverse thing for me cause it's such a common thing in Spider-Man. From the shattered dimensions/edge of time games to the comics to the movies it's always been there
im hoping that theyre setting up andrew for a venom vs andrew movie. would be funny as hell

Adum said he turned it off after 20 minutes so probably not lmao
Just realized that Electros electricity is yellow because he is in a different universe, which he mentioned he said that the power feels different in this universe
Totally agree with Adam: I found the death of aunt may the worst part of the movie and unintentionally funny. Especially with Happy showing up out of nowhere
It wasn’t really out of no where, he was driving back from work & he called Peter asking about the villains he saw on his security cam not long before arriving
to go against Adam about the whole "great power, great responsibility" scene with Aunt May, I think Aunt May's whole character in this movie is to encourage Peter to save the villains in this movie. Like tom Holland was going to send them all back to their deaths in their own universes with that magic box (which is a dubious plot point IMO). Aunt May in this movie is the most justified character to deliver the Great Power/Great Responsibility line in the entire spiderman franchise. that being said, her death scene was pretty bad cause she walked around for like 4 minutes and talking after being smashed by the green goblin's glider and we all knew she was dead. that was really cheesy
Yeah, having the line be her response to Peter telling her “it’s not my responsibility” felt like it fit pretty well imo, whereas it felt more forced in the other Spider-Man movies to me
With adrenaline you don’t even notice you’re hurt sometimes, I’ve gotten into car crashes where I try to see if everyone else is ok before noticing I hit my head on the side of the car. She walked for like 90 seconds and was already stumbling
Yeah no biggie it's just a bruise I only got thrown through three separate brick walls
I agree with basically everything you guys said on No Way Home.
But I think Adam saying the great power line was just a reference I don't think is fair. That is a core part to the Spider-Man mythos and character. It is what literally defines him. I think comparing it to the Green Goblin "i'm something of a scientist myself" isn't really fair at all.
I def think it could've been handled better but it was a needed core part of the film for Peter's character.
Why is NWH even here? Clearly everyone is here for Supergirl 1984
" character driven, creative and original " HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA funniest thing i have heard all week
I feel Adum didn't get the point that the "great power" quote was meant to be Holland's Uncle Ben moment, he was too hung up with it seeing it as a reference. Same sentiments with Ralph and Alex

Ralph sounds so happy this rocks
I think in Adum's mind, he expects to see something he has never seem before in a film. And it's clear Adum only likes a specfic type of film.
I feel like a multiverse works in Spiderman because it's low scale super heroism, not necessarily this movie but in a lot of other Spiderman crossovers it's "we've crossed over to another world and we're saving another new York" logistically it's not far apart from Spiderman going to Boston and having an adventure there. Multiverse is much more manageable when it's like just one city in another world

Been waiting for this…
Saying that using the “with great power comes great responsibility” line is just a reference to be a reference is like saying Peter using webs or having a red suit is a reference. It’s completely inseparable from the character.
