    I have to tell you, I have zero plan of ever doing this & somehow accidentally ended up here. I watched this video through to the end! LMAO! You do a good video, seriously, I sat here like I was watching an actual movie! I just wanted you to know this because I was impressed. I don't have the biggest attention span anymore yet I was glued! I was actually weighing the pros and cons...I mean we do have some good packing soil, then I remembered I have zero interest in getting a pool! Good job!

    Watching in 2021 and I’m amazed at how thorough and well prepared this video is! The host presented himself in such a way that I felt compelled to watch from start to finish and rewatch some of the topics that pertain to my upcoming pool installation. Buddy can you come up to New York and handle my semi in ground install?? Lol! Serious props for this vid!!

    Chad, Insightful documentary. All concerns I’ve had since beginning my project). I’m well educated, Physical/Mechanical engineer. You did a fantastic explanation of ALL of my concerns. It was nice to see it explained through experience instead of my educated guesses. Well done sir, well done.

    For some reason I thought this was recent, never bother to look at dates. Anyway, this is the idea my wife saw on Pinterest and was telling me about on our upcoming pool install, no no no... you can't do that..
    We'll I was completely wrong and glad I am. Our deck is 6 inches higher than the pool will be so this is a perfect idea to blend the two.
    Also, this guy is a born teacher, I agree with the others he should be teaching all forms of math.
    Very impressed.

    Great tutorial video. I just wanna add a perfect solution to the dirt “problem” you just put it on offer up or other local selling app for free and someone will come and haul it that same day or so! I’m serious! You won’t have a problem finding someone that needs it! And that with everything else! Want a plants rock pave etc removed? Do not pay someone! Someone needs it for a project and they will remove and hauled😅 it’s. Winn Winn for both ends! You might know this but some people don’t so there you go✌🏼🙋🏻‍♂️❤️

    23 yrs ago I bought an 18ft round 4’ tall above ground pool at WalMart for $150.00.. live in south Florida.. sandy soil.. dug a hole with shovel and my 3 yr old granddaughter and her shovel🥰 til we hit water (about 40” deep) and big enough around that we could walk around the outside of the pool while putting it together down in the ground (metal walls) by the time we were done digging the hole my husband was done with another project and he helped build the pool.. we filled dirt in around the outside of the pool as we filled the water in the pool.. keeping the pool water higher than the dirt we were filling in.. as we filled the dirt around the outside of the pool we watered the sandy dirt to pack it down.. we put an in ground Hayward pump and filter about 25’ away up by the house.. beautiful!!! The pool has lasted 23 years and still going (over the years 4 different liners.. I don’t take them out just empty pool and add the new liner fill back up.. 3 different pool pumps) built a deck (ourselves) around the pool.. so $150 pool got a $12,000 deck around it, we got a beautiful backyard, my granddaughter and I had more fun than you can imagine and I have memories that fill my heart beyond measure!!! I highly recommend a buried pool for every yard!!

If you do this for a living you should consider having someone record your company doing this. But before u post it you gotta add ur narration. I want to put our 25’ x 5’ft above ground pool, about 2 feet underground and then I want to put planting boxes around the pool and a set of stairs. I usually use the extra dirt for my garden/back of my property for grading. Good video!!
    You could also turn the extra dirt into bricks that you let dry in the sun. I think you might be able to hide the pump under some access stairs built-in on the side partially under ground. Create a door in the Side of the stair unit to access pump etc.

    I’ve seen this done back in the 80’s so it’s nothing new. They had partial in ground pools available back then with differing depths at each end. The bigger question most people here have is whether it can be done to a particular brand or style of above ground pool. If it’s a cheap INTEK Walmart pool I would not bury it more than 1/3 the sidewall depth. If your yard is not level and you don’t want to change the grade too much due to water run off this is a great alternative. Take an old pool liner and lay it down first and wrap it over the legs and up to the edge of the dirt. Keeping in mind you also have poles that can rust so consider wrapping them at the base in thick yard bags. This will help if you plan to leave some water in the bottom during the winter. If you completely drain the pool and it is buried deep than there is a good chance the dirt packed against the pool will push in. This has other benefits including two thermal and overall ascetics. So if you want it buried more than 18” I’d recommend just buying a pool liner designed for it. Like he mentioned the deeper you go the more work to replace the liner. 6” all the way around will give the pool a lot of extra stability you will also appreciate.

    Thank you for this video We did our above ground this way all the way and wish we had purchased an in ground pool motor with it but we didn't and boy is it a mess to clean. For we have it below the ground also about two ft or 18 inches below water level. Just wished the installer had told us about the motors when he installed it for us. We love the pool and we enjoy it every season. This is our fourth year having it in and wouldnt do it different other than the motor and when ours goes out and a new one installed it will be for the in ground pools.

    I realize that the codes will be different from municipality to municipality but at some point lowering the pool sides into the ground will require you to have a fence securing access to the pool. Perhaps many municipalities require such a fence even for the above ground pools but I'm not sure.

    • @abovegroundpros

      +candace Leonard Not at all, as long as you deal with potential water that could sit in the area. Direct the ground so the water moves from the area and does not collect and you would be good to go.

      I would hope you put a fence around the pool anyways no matter what the "code" is. Statistically 10 people die a day due to accidental drowning, 1 in 5 are usually children under the age of 14 in their own backyards. Many cases take place while a parent is doing one thing and a child slips out the backdoor unattended. www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/waterinjuries-factsheet.html

    Wouldn't it be safer to dig the hole larger than the pool, build a retaining wall around the hole and then build the pool in the hole. You could then build decking to cover the hole around the pool and never have to worry about replacing the liner.

    i have an incline in my yard so my pool is partially in ground. he missed a point or i missed it but the pool needs to be full with water or it will fall in on itself from the pressure of the ground. my pool level dropped a little less than 1/2 way during last winter and now there is a slight bulge on the buried side. be careful of this if you decide to do this.

    I did all of this,but there is enough room to walk all around the pool. I did this thinking i need the room to replace liner if i needed to. I live in Saucier MS. near the coast. My question is, the hole is clay,and it does like you said fill with water.I did all of this a little at a time . one of my friends let me barrow a little backhoe,my pool is 22' round, so I made the hole 24' round, but not perfect all the way around, then leveled best I could,then got a truck load of sand and leveled again then put tarp on top of sand. Put pool togeather and filled, I did buy a better pump than what came with pool on ebay and I got a sand filter from a friend. This is all on top of the hole next to pool,works great.So far is all of this ok? And now, I have all of this space around the pool, what should I do and if filled will I be able to change liner If I need to? Thanks for any info you might have. Cindy

    • @bookooc5605
      @bookooc5605 7 років тому +12

      An inground pool costs much much more. You have a MUCH bigger and deeper hole to dig as well, bigger, and the pool itself is 3 to 20 times more expensive. Then add the pad, and you are looking at $25k-to over $100k depending on what type of in-ground pool. gunite, vinyl or fiberglass. I have owned 2 above ground pools, and loved them. installed them myself. And built a huge deck out from the house to them so you could just jump in. But still wish I could I afford an in-ground. But it is NOT anywhere near close in price.

    • @hopsinn5764
      @hopsinn5764 7 років тому +2

      I put mine in the ground simply because I have very little yard. If I kept it above ground, you could barely get around it. I have a deck flush against it and no problems getting around.... love, love, love!

    for the pump problem, couldn't you dig a hole for the pump too beside the pool so it will sit below water level. You could then cover it with a fake rock so water doesn't get in to it.

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  8 років тому +1

      +L Aradia If you could successfully keep water out of it, it could be an option, but you'll also have to get the the pump and filter for weekly maintenance so you would want to keep that in mind.

    I'm hoping you can give some reassurance on my current situation. I purchased a semi inground oval pool. Says you can bury it up to 27 inches, its a 54 inch pool. I live on a slope and one side (flat side) is next to KY clay, but about 36 inches high. Think it be ok? The opposing side is mostly exposed.

      If you're just going to backfill with dirt I wouldn't recommend going more than 27 in so you might just need to slope the ground a bit

    If you were sinking an oval pool into the ground, I assume you would have to dig out for the braces along the straight sides of the pool. I would assume you don't want to fill all that area will cement. How would you recommend doing this?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  9 років тому +1

      Joel Davis You're right. I mean you could, but that's a lot of concrete. You could fill some of the space in with dirt and then fill the part up against the pool with concrete.

      Above Ground Pros You don't need the side braces when the pool's entirely in the ground. ;)

  • @Vismajor01

    Well, not really complete. What if my above-ground pool is not metal framed, but supported with metal bars from the ourside? Surely you cant pour concrete top of that. And what about the pump? You said you can't use above the ground pool pump if you drop your pool? Why not? You just need to drop your pump too..no?

    I put a 12x24 oval about 36" in the ground. the plan was to attach a cca 2x8x10 to the straight sides, above the buttresses, to help hold back the ground pressure. a patio will be poured straight on top of that, stopping 1.5" from the pool walls.
    Is that enough to stop problems with cave ins when changing the liner?
    or should we pour a little 2 foot deep x 10 foot wide concrete wall a few feet away to keep the pressure low on that straight wall?
    (or, just do 8" of slurry right up against the wall, and under the patio?)

    hi!
    We just had a 24 ft. round pool installed. 13 out of the 16 posts are perfect level. three are out of plumb by 1 inch or more. the level of water is 6.5 inch's on 2 sides and 5.5 inch's on 2 sides.
    they didn't use patio stones under the posts and I am on sand. should I be happy with this installation?

    Good luck changing the liner when the walls collapse due to dirt weight when you drain it.

    Sounds like it would be easier to just buy a fiberglass pool insert instead of this type. In the end, it would be better and maybe cheaper.

    Just bought a Autumn Breeze Doughboy 16x28x56 Oval. I live just outside Chicago and we have more of a topsoil type Earth. If I'm only dropping pool 2ft. do you still recommend the slurry mix or do you think I'll be okay with back filling with the spoils?

    • @abovegroundpros
      @abovegroundpros  5 років тому

      On oval pools I always recommend a slurry mix because the straight size can be fairly weak if you ever have to drain the pool down and replace your liner.
