I worked out at an old gym in the late 80's that had a TON of this Nautilus equipment- it had pretty much every piece imaginable, and to be honest... that stuff was KILLER. The lat pullover worked the lats right in that spot where they meet the arms (the top of the V-taper) so damn good that you could actually FEEL that spots pump. It was a machine that no exercise I have ever tried can duplicate. The bicep curl also hit the peak of the bicep in such a pump giving way... I really miss that equipment. If someone bought the rights to build the equipment in a new factory, and re-released the stuff, it would be EPIC.

I remember this old equipment as well. I go to a YMCA right now that has 'Magnum' brand machines (Magnum is out of business now). They have a very similar lat pullover machine. Yes, you can feel it work! I can't for the life of my understand why other companies don't play off of this machine. All they have to do is change it a bit.

I started at a Nautilus Gym in the 70s. And it was a great system if You did it properly 2 pos 4 neg.
All the new machines are cheap pulley cables instead of sprocket chain. Wish the gyms were still around as good low impact workout without injuries You get with free weights.

I don't remember if I told you this before. There was an interview Ronald and Nancy Reagan gave on the Barbara Walters show in which Nancy commented to Barbara that as a result of "Ron" working out all the time on "those Nautilus machines" in the White House gym he had put on so much upper body muscle mass that she had to buy him a complete new wardrobe. I never understood why Arthur didn't take advantage of that and use it in his adds. When I saw the show and heard her say that I was sure he would.

When I was in my mid-20s and in the best shape of my life, I trained at a great old-school gym that had several of the original (or at least early line) Nautilus machines. Besides the classic pullover that most people know and love, there was a great "Duo Chest" machine that allowed for brutal supersets of flyes and presses with only a second or two required to adjust the pin, a great leg press machine that was unilateral and also required good technique (if you pressed fast, the cam did not engage the chain so you pushed the pedal and that's it; you had to follow the slow and steady motion rule), and a pretty good lat pull down. This was 2000 or so. I have encountered a few other Nautilus machines here and there since I started training in the mid-90s and never thought ill of any of them. I always wondered what it would be like to have access to the original Nautilus-style gyms in the 80s where it was a circuit of only their gear. My parents were fitness nuts in the 80s and like others, still refer to any machine generically as a "Nautilus machine."

As a worker in the early to mid seventies at the plant in Lake Helen Fla., I remember Casey's visits there. A very scary looking person, we all soon warmed up to him, as he turned out to be a very nice guy. I worked out with Casey several times in the Exec. gym being invited to use the gym after work by Arthurs wonderful son Edgar. Never before or after have I worked for such wonderful people ! I do miss Arthur and the crew very much.Vinny from Deltona, Fla.

I believe it was Boyer Coe who stated that Viator used to sneak out & get volume sessions in at another local gym..
That said Jones's HIT sessions were full body and looked quite lengthy compared to Mentzer's & Yates's versions..
Personally I feel that full body workouts were the key to the huge & rapid gains - at least from a training perspective..

    • @ReschDMD

I have always felt that HIT works, but probably not for everyone. Just my thoughts, but I feel like someone needs to be somewhat athletic (or at least "in tune" with their body) to really push for that total positive failure. Many people just do not understand their limits and stop a few reps shy. That being said, Mentzer went off the deep end by the end of his life and I do not really buy into his "1-3 reps of incline bench every 8 days" theory.

The first gym I lifted at (circa 1991 @ 21years) had the machine the Casey is using while wearing the Penn State tank top.
It was a reconditioned machine, red and white in color. The chain drive and everything lol. In our small Ohio town at our small gym, it was a semibig deal to us. Later as a YMCA personal trainer ( The first paraplegic in the over 150 year history) I was able to develop many ab programs on the modern version.
As a paraplegic I've found that the. Nitro line and and the previous line to it were very accessible and effective for me with few improvisations.
See me jump through hoops (sort of)on my channel. Thanks Nick!!

per Darden, on t-nation, other comparable results.. "Casey had what I considered to be one-in-a-million genetics for bodybuilding. So duplicating the results would be extremely difficult, especially considering Viator was mostly rebuilding muscle he had previously built. Even though they don't have the genetics of Casey, I've put a number of above-average men through programs similar to the Colorado Experiment.
Here are the muscle gains of eight of those subjects:
David Hudlow built 18.5 pounds of muscle in 11 days. Documented in The New High-Intensity Training.
Eddie Mueller built 18.25 pounds of muscle in 10 weeks. Documented in Massive Muscles in 10 Weeks.
Todd Waters built 15.25 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Documented in High-Intensity Strength Training.
Jeff Turner built 18.25 pounds of muscle in 4 weeks. Documented in GROW.
Keith Whitley built 29 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Documented in Bigger Muscles in 42 Days.
David Hammond built 22.5 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Documented in Bigger Muscle in 42 Days.
Joe Walker added 17.38 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Documented in The Body Fat Breakthrough.
Shane Poole built 19.34 pounds of muscle in 6 weeks. Documented in The Body Fat Breakthrough.

I tried a version of the Colorado experiment, the 30-30-30. Very simple BUT extremely mentally and physical challenging. Basically you're doing 1 1/2 reps. @ negs and one positive. Except you are going 30 seconds down, 30 seconds up, then 30 seconds down. Must start with a challenging weight. You will build solid muscle and become ridiculously strong. Simple concept, however if you are weak minded, don't even try. Oh and you only work out once a week. Start with machines, large body parts, arms optional. Good luck.

    1. Viator DID gain 63 pounds steroid free. Up until he died he insisted he did not use gear at all during the experiment, and he had no financial interests from said experiment after so many years, so why lie?
    2. Though it was 63 pounds, it was not all LBM. It was more like 40~pounds because he did drop in body fat significantly as well. Even then, that is incredible.
    3. He had dieted down before the experiment and lost 20~ pounds.
So, after all that, it was like, 20 pounds or more of gains in a month. Still incredible considering he did it all natural.
And if you’re still not convinced, just don’t knock it until you try it.

I used an all Nautilus workout in the late 90's, i enjoyed it and combined it with a lot of swimming. I enjoyed the change of routine but i certainly didn't get bigger. In'fact this was after my period of Mass building and more a fitness type regime for me. The only system i ever found to build as much muscle as i could that worked for me was, Training each body part per day( Arms on the same day) was Heavy dumbbells and barbell work.

In the last 2 years I train 2x35min a week and have more muscle than when I trained high volume. Small injuries in elbow and shoulder are almost totally gone and I spend less time in the gym. Casey was incredible with amazing genetics. I stopped and visited with him in 1970 while he lived in New Iberia, Louisiana. His workouts would kill most people even before he met Arthur Jones. His intensity was scary. He died way too young down here in Florida. Arthur was very smart and had several inventions in other fields. But he was outspoken and got under some people's skin. He had his own TV show called Wild Cargo. He was an explorer of Africa and other countries and loved animals. That is why he built Jumbo Lair just north of Ocala, Florida. At one time he had his own Jumbo Jet and landing strip there.

Actually Nick on another note, if you check that t-nation article, the 4th pic down is Casey doing front double biceps, I mention this becuase of your really good video about bicep length short vs long and the biceps peak, had never considered the points you made, but it looks here like Casey is a real outlier, obviously his biceps are huge, but he also has a pretty good peak and does have long muscle bellies on both arms. Rather unusual it would seem, at least after watching your vid, wich was very informative

I knew Casey personally. He did not gain 63 lbs of muscle he re-gained 63 lbs of muscle that he had previously lost. It' called Muscle memory. He almost cut a finger off accidentally while using a tool and it got infected. As Nick said, his muscles had simply atrophied so he wasn't gaining 63 lbs of muscle that he never had before but re-gaining what was lost under perfect conditions. Same with Jones and his 21 lb "Gain."

is that Don Shula at the 3:24 mark ? sure looks like him. There was a Nautilus Fitness Center in Ft Worth back in the late 70s. I worked there out a couple of times. One aspect of Nautilus is the compound machines for HIT. Compound chest machine; flies with chest press, lateral raises with shoulder press. Knee extension with leg press. Pre-exhaust with flies then chest press to failure, lateral raises then shoulder press to failure. Knee extensions then leg press to failure. I worked out at a guys house in the mid 70s that had a Nautilus pull over machine, triceps/bicep and a hip and back machine in his garage.. not exactly what one would expect in a small town in east Texas in the 70s...

I trained for a short time under Arthur Jones in the 1970s. He was ADAMANTELY AGAINST not only steroids but ANY food supplements. I trained with Casey in the Deland High School Gym when he was preparing for the Mr. America contest. And the way you put it made it sound like they were hiding or trying to hide his weight loss prior to the Colorado Experiment when IN FACT Arthur Jones announced it and explained the muscle recovery aspect of his weight gain at the time of it's publication. A little objectivity on your part would have gone a long way to enhance your credibility as a journalist.

Arthur Jones was an odd duck. I remember Sports Illustrated did a fairly lengthy article about him in the early to mid 1970's. I don't remember a whole lot from the article, except for something strange that Jones supposedly said. For some reason, he told the sports writer that he "wanted to bomb Rhodesia, and stomp on the ashes." I wonder if he wasn't an African mercenary in an earlier chapter of his life.

Actually, I think he was. I think he said he was a mercenary pilot. Yeah, I met the guy at Colorado State University, the place where the Colorado Experiment was done. Then about three years later, while vacationing in Florida, I went to Deland where the Nautilus factory was, and had lunch with him. He was a scary guy.

couple salient points regarding the Colorado Experiment, first off, I'm not sure Arthur ever used the experiment itself for marketing Nautilus because the machines that were used (see pic at 3:49) were not really Nautilus machines. The experiment was done to test the efficacy of his NO & NA machines. That is, Negative Only and Negative Accentuated machines, specially designed to allow the trainee to lift the weight with, for ex, the legs and lower only with arms or to have assistants lift the weight so the trainee could do the lowering or negative or eccentric phase of the movement. These machines never went into production or were ever sold so it is doubtful that he used Casey for anything other than as a model for Nautilus equipment. And I wonder, since Casey won Mr. America (not teenage Mr A.) after this (as well as best-every-bodypart except abs if I remember) if that contest was teseted or not.. also Casey was paid for every pound he put on, so doubt Jones would have given him steriods if it was going to cost him, plus, wouldn't that be a felony, giving steroids to a minor? And if Jones had caught Casey doing roids behind his back he would have kicked his ass and Casey would have lost his job, not to mention how would a kid from podunk town in florida get steriods, especially if he hadn't been working for many months, they were not as prevelant back then like now.. just my .02

Casey Viator was said to been put on a calorierestricted diet of 800 cals a day diet by Jones before starting this experiment, aside from the freak accident and so called allergic reaction to a certain medicine which nearly killed him.
Second he would sneak out of Jones 's supervision to do some regular high volume training in between his HIT training.
This also counts for Mike and Ray Mentzer.
Third he was roided to the gills so that makes his super transformation more than logical then just because of muscle memory. Even more evidend hence his recuperation time being inhuman to be able to train 5 days week all out. These were his own words.

Viator was missing part of a finger as well...baby on right hand...not sure if that was the injury...Arthur also had a pet gorilla that he used to train with his machines...

Could you imagine gaining 63 pounds of muscle in 28 DAYS (just FOUR full weeks)? Jesus Christ. I gained like 20 the past few months and that was very intense for me!

  • @tomlucasrccrawlers9108
    @tomlucasrccrawlers9108 5 років тому

Originally it wasn't 63 pounds (that number seems to go every decade)....it was closer to 25 or 30.
Your right , Casey hadn't trained in 4 to 6 months , he had come completely off gear and was away from the gym. As soon as the experiment started up he was back on gear. All he did was regain from muscle-memory and gear. Also....I have the actual story around here somewhere where....Casey admitted...he said "when Arthur wasn't looking I got in extra sets". He was only HIT when Arthur was looking and same with Boyer.
I also have the story about who trained hardest. Jones said Ray Mentzer and Franco Columbo trained the hardest out of everyone. Mike didn't train near as hard as his brother. And he(Jones)couldn't get Arnold to train to failure.

Nautilus is not especially scientific IIRC but man I go to a couple gyms with Nautilus equipment and they make great accessories to free weight compound lifts IMO. Love the old silver high end ones too but don't see them as often :)

from the t-nation article "The Colorado Experiment took place in May of 1973 at Colorado State University. The purpose of the experiment was to produce a high level of muscular growth by training Casey Viator every other day, or 14 times in 28 days, in a supervised university setting.
Nautilus-inventor Arthur Jones personally trained Casey for every workout. Training was intense, progressive, and involved a negative-only repetition style on 50 percent of the exercises.
During the first week alone, Viator gained 27.25 pounds of solid muscle. Repeat: That's 27.25 pounds of muscle in 7 days, or an average of 3.9 pounds of muscle per day. The facts show that during week 1, Viator gained 20.25 pounds of body weight and lost 7 pounds of fat, for a total of 27.25 pounds of muscle mass."

great video. Any info on the system that used air pressure to provide resistance? I used it in the 80s and it was pretty good. You would dial in the psi for the amount of resistance. You could set it so it would go down slightly as u lifted too. It was very much like nautilus as far as size of equipment, but I remember it being more affective
