In the clip of a US training film, we saw two US soldiers, the second who shook his head in disgust at the first's behaviour was none other than Burgess Meredith, Rocky Balboa's trainer, who was also the Penguin in the TV Batman series.
Brilliant as always Rob. One thing I really appreciate is when you mention locations, there's often a shot of said location and many a time it's clear that it's *your* shot of the location, meaning you actually travel there as part of the work that goes into these wonderful videos. That's the level of dedication I love about you, Rob. That's why I subscribed. With love from Yorkshire :)
Excellent as always Rob. I'd never heard of this case before. What a thoroughly nasty, and evil couple. A big thumbs up for all the hard work, and Sherlockian sleuthing that you must have put in, not only for the info, but the appropriate video clips too. Any subject you want to cover in future videos would be perfect.
Yet another brilliant video Rob! I hadn’t heard of this and would love to hear more crime stories from London. I also didn’t know there were still shelter signs in London - how fascinating! Hope you have a great weekend ❤️
Great video Rob love all the old pictures and film dont often hear of the criminal side of the war except a bit of black market crime looking forward to your next video always a new surprise all the best Rob
Great video, Rob. Have been watching your films all day this wet Sunday and had never heard of this gruesome twosome. Hard to understand why they were free for so long. Great channel 👍 Subscribed.
That was very interesting. I love taking a tour of London and seeing where the crimes took place. It's nice to have a bit of history of the districts plugged in. I would really appreciate if you would do more.
What a beautifully created video, so much filming, research and compilation. Thank you very much for your time and effort in producing a fascinating insight into these two - I’d never heard of them either. Sharing like crazy 😁
Thanks Rob, another wonderfully interesting upload. I always appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into your vlog. My parents were of that wartime generation and both had some tales to tell about their wartime experiences. Sadly crime was rife during the war, not all of it purely related to the black market. Much criminal activity occurred at night taking advantage of the cloak afforded by the strictly enforced blackout.
I'm late, but I enjoyed your narration even if the subject matter was not pleasant. I was embarrassed that Carl was an American but relieved that he was born a Swede. And, as you stated, it is tasteless to profit from crime, particularly Elizabeth being able to sell her story to the press. Thank you, again!
It comes as no surprise, when clicking that play button of a Robs London video, we are in for a well researched and interesting story. This was a real Gem, and of a Story I had not known. I certainly did find it interesting. Amazing photo of the nurse that had been attacked on the bike, sitting in the car they then stole and killed the driver of. If she did die at 54, I wonder what sort of life she led after prison. All the best to you and Family Rob as always.
@@Robslondon Apropos your closing question, you might look at John George Haigh, although in truth I'm mainly interested because he operated literally around the corner from where I grew up albeit 6 or 7 years before I was born 🙂
Thanks so much… unfortunately the video isn’t getting as many views as my other ones so please be sure to spread the word! 😉Thanks again and stay well.
Oh wow! I never heard of this story and although the crime is awful, I couldn’t help but prick up my ears as listened. My interest stemmed the moment you mention Arnhem. (My dad fought there with 2 para) and even after watching this twice and googling, couldn’t find as yet his war record. Your research is mind blowing and yet again you but this all together so carefully I find myself addicted to this channel. May I say your opening reminds me of Thames television and buts a smile on my face like it did when I was child. ❤
Thank you so, so much Gill 😊 What a lovely comment. The into is indeed inspired my the Thames Television logo; a big part of my childhood too. Stay well and thanks again.
An excellent video Rob. I did not know the names of these vile people, but have seen the film 'The Good Time Girl' with Jean Kent, without realising it was based on a true event. Unfortunately, the London Blitz and the blackout provided a cover for a number of murderers, as a dead body did not arouse the same level of suspicion or investigation as we see today. I think that Elizabeth got off very lightly, considering the murder of George and the fact that she was wearing Violet's clothes and the victim had been left for dead. As usual, our beloved gutter press were willing to pay Elizabeth for her story...shame on them. Rob, I'll have to stop watching your video's or I'll have none left for Christmas.
Hi Rob, 👍👍👍 a damned good story, well researched and not a story I have ever seen mentioned before. So Dixon of Dock Green strikes again. Cheers DougT in Mancs (BTW is that your real voice or a Google synthesised one? 🧐)
Cheers Doug! It is indeed my voice, although it’s not how I’d sound if you met me; my accent is stronger in real life. For videos I do be best to talk proper 😂😉
You find the most interesting stories and do a great job of telling them. Don't get why women often seem to get off so lightly in these sorts of cases.
Thanks so much 😊 I’ve written quite a few crime articles for a certain trade magazine over the years and they would make a good book- although to be honest it’s easier to share them here! Thanks and stay well
Thanks so much 😉 Unfortunately this video hasn’t performed so well… if it picks up more traction I’ll definitely do more though. Thanks again for your support; much appreciated
What a horrid pair and such atmospheric use of B&W clips to tell the story. It was a break from Pub search videos in order to lengthen the delights of you companionable videos! More I say!🙂 Thanks! Rob
They were incredibly stupid ,I remember the case,I was just a little girl then but I remember my parents talking about it.They both were of the opinion that they both should have hung ,she was just as guilty as he was.
Not at all " Bonnie & Clyde " . Neither of them gave evidence , falsely or otherwise , against one another . They each tried to protect the other . The couple featured in this episode were just the opposite , trying to save themselves at the expense of the other .
Never heard of this case before Rob. I can tell a lot of work and research has gone into this. It's a 10 from Len.
Much appreciated, thanks 😉

Thanks so much Mickey! Yes, I was out late several nights filming as you can see 😉 Stay well
There was a film about this case in the Eighties entitled Charcagoe Joe and the show girl.
Excellent as always Rob. I'd never heard of this case before. What a thoroughly nasty, and evil couple. Really interesting that Rob. Very well researched and great that you shot some of the locations from this sad, yet compelling crime tale.
Much appreciated Dave, thank you

Nothing wrong with being a cinema usherette. I did it for nine years. Loved (nearly) every minute of it.
Nothing wrong with it at all… I’m sure you’re not a murderer though! 😉
I have read about this horrible case. The woman was remarkably fortunate to be reprieved. Poor victims, murdered by two immature fools.
Thanks Jacqueline, a very good way of putting it. Stay well.
The film Chicago joe and the showgirl is about this case. Its a good film..
Murder wasn't necessary - dreadful couple !!
Agreed….
01:27 Burgess Meredith, aka The Penguin.
Yep! Well spotted ;-)
Wasn't this story not the inspiration for the Kiether Sutherland film Chicago Joe and the Showgirl?
Yes, there are some clips/screenshots of the film in the video.
