- In the freezing cold winter of late 1836 and early 1837, a woman's torso, head and legs were discovered on the Regent's Canal at Paddington and Mile End, and on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton. The disembodied parts belonged to Hannah Brown, who had been due to marry James Greenacre.
The gruesome tale which came to light ended up becoming one of 19th century London's most notorious murder cases...

What a brilliant video Rob, extremely well researched and with excellent period illustrations. Considering that this horrific tale took place in the 1830s, it is surprising how quickly the police of the time resolved this case. What a revolting person James Greenacre was and it is good that he got his just deserts. Is it known whether the little boy was transported with his mother, after all he had committed no crime? Not sure that I would have wanted to eat a Greenacre pie!

Poor Hannah Brown, what a horrific death😥. Thankfully the case was solved. I wonder did Greenacre murder his other wives, thus, making him a Serial Killer. If he did 🤔
As for The Greenacre Tart-PICKLES, LEG of meat and HEAD of lettuce. For flattening out the pastry a ROLLING PIN is required. Got to feed the masses, 20,000 people who came to watch his execution😱

I wonder if Alfred Hitchcock had this story in mind when he made Rear Window - where a man murders his wife, chops her up and throws her body parts in the East River. All except the head, of course, which he puts in a hat box and buries in a flower bed!!!!

The most shocking thing about this was Greenacre's plan to go to Hudson Bay, especially in the 1830s. I'd hardly be willing to live there in 2024.

Rob! Fascinating and the production was most excellent too. I think a Greenacre tart was probably something sweet, I'm not sure meat pies would have down well after such as grisly, and somewhat 'meaty' ( sorry) murder. Well done, you deserve another 100,000 subs at least.

Greenacre tarts pissibly a jam tart. These were common and were given temporary names for recent events. Or maybe they were cooked cheesecake the cheese being made with soured milk strained and mixed with sugar and sometimes dried fruit these also were given names to celebrate Saints days etc
