Great video and detail. Did the steps you outlined….. Big difference in smoothness and quiet operation. Yes the tracks were “dirty” also,
Thank you so much! I’m glad I was able to help you make your garage door quieter! To super charge the quietness please check out this follow up video I made to reduce rattles 🙏🏽: m.ua-cam.com/video/NPKhR6vCb_0/v-deo.html
Old guy here, and I don't usually hand out too many compliments these days, but you did an awesome job. Thanks for the tips.
Just found this video last night. My garage door isn't that old about two years now but it creaks and screams like a WWII Sherman tank. A lot of that has to do with the 30+ year old garage door opener that came with the house. A new wall mount opener is on order but the door itself needs some tending to. You saved me from making some stupid mistakes and I'm really glad I watched this.👍
Thank you, now my garage is very quiet, Oh damn now I can't hear my kids when they leave😅
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Very well done! I will use all this information and visuals in the future, for sure! Thanks!
Thank you so much! Im glad I was able to help! Have a great day! 🙏🏽😊👍🏽
Great video, very helpful! Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for the tips!
Good job. Thanks. Now I have to do it myself.
Thank you my garage door is the same as this. Will be doing this.
Wish you the best! Let me know how it turns out! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
Great video! The quality and production are very well done! You pay attention to detail and, most importantly, you GET TO THE POINT and make it simple! Thanks!
Thank you so much for the feedback! Thank you also for the love and support! 🙏🏽😊
Thanks for the great work and video. Stay humble.
Thank you so much for the love and support! 🙏🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse I'm watching all of your videos now and just subb'd. Great tips on layman's term.
Thanks for such an informative
Video
It was my pleasure! Thank you 🙏🏽!
It works thanks for your presentation..
I’m glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊
Popped up on my feed....thanks for the reminder!
I use the spray lithium grease on all the areas that you used WD-40 on as well as the springs coils as recommended by a garage door repairman.
Great video thank you
I’m glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊
Good job
Speaking to the metal shavings being neglected by the installer…a couple of years after our home was built, we had a company with a huge vacuum setup suck out all of our HVAC system. We were home and heard a bunch of loud crashing sounds when they energized and couldn’t wait to see what it was when they de-energized. There was a really nice framing hammer and several chunks of 2x4. How do you, as a carpenter, miss your main weapon (your hammer)? 🤔🤭
I saw the video at 9:00 this morning, went to the hardware store, grocery store and the door is quieter by 10:45! Thanks! Great video!!!!
I’m glad I was able to help! Thank so much for the awesome feedback! 🙏🏽😊
it will attract dirt and dust, and again make noise
No grease or silicone of any kind is recommended especially if your climate gets cold at times. Oil based lubricant is best for any door and any climate. Silicone and grease attracts and holds dust, dirt, and debris. Also gets thick in cold temps doing the opposite of what you want it to do.
I'm watching the the video about changing the outer corner hinges the green one and I brought the quiet sleaves and the middle hinges for the second video you made . you said the middle hinges need to be changed to make it work so it won't separate the panels.it didn't work, the screw and hinge didn't line up with the panel.what should I do return everything? Or is there another way
👌 thank you, it worked
I’m glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊
Should check door spring adjustment for lift assist. Winding rods needed. Easy lift means less motor noise.
Be careful wiping down those rails. They can be extremely sharp.
also true
thank you! this reminds me to clean my garage door! lol
Yes brotha, make sure you do your 6 month monthly TLC maintenance 👍🏽
Good tip about the WD40. I’ve always used the standard WD40. Now, if my neighbour across the street would grease their garage door, I’d be happy. LOL
Haha right?! If you get a can it will be more than enough extra to offer them some 👍🏽😄
7:30 - I don't think that is a moving part that you lubricated. That pulley appears to be securely mounted to that shaft, via those 3 big red square-head grub bolts clamping it to the shaft.🤔
7:39 is the only place that needed lubed... where the shaft spins in the bracket.
Thank you for the feedback! 👍🏽😊
It is true. I agree with you.
WD 40 is not a good lub, it attracks dust and dirt. plus its very thin lub. dont use it for locks either
Man I missed stuff last time. Thanks
thanks
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏽😊
Thank U
Awesome video bro. Did not know about White Lithium Grease so thank you!
Thank you brother! 🙏🏽😊
Use white lithium grease from a spay can, better.
very informative and it works excellent. thanks
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽😊
3 in 1 has a lubricant actually labeled as 'garage door lubricant'. Been using it for as long as I can remember.
Yes, the nylon rollers will help dramatically and thew garage door installers in my area said they will last longer.
GAME CHANGER : BEARINGS! 1837 then:now2022: seize pins nylon is for zip ties! but do last longer and are quieter but are still equipped with seize pins lol
Very well done vid. Also, why am I 62 years old and just now learning that the WD-40 ALSO sprays with the straw down? 🤦🏻♂️😂
Thank you 🙏🏽! No worries! I’m always learning new things everyday as well! Never stop learning! 👊🏽😊
Wait, what?!
@@JohnBartlett777 the new cans spray with the straw and also without, just all attached now
those steel cables on each side do get brittle over time- i lube them once a year
Lubricant is fine if the door is in a supper clean environment , but when the hinge is in a normal real world environment the lubricant attracts dust, dirt and fine sand. Over time this becomes a grinding compound. Use a spray cleaner to remove the grinding compound before adding more "lubricant".
That’s why you buy silicone free lubrication. The silicone is what makes all that stick to it
Before better, lower decibel! Lubricate the moving parts much louder now, but door moves faster however!
Great job my hillbilly friend.
Yeah. I think I'll go with the spray. Bunch easier.
Now you have a big dirt collector with those springs.
I agree! Spray is best! 👍🏽😊
Thank you but like this garage door because of no security devices such as: spring breakage protection (catch device) and horizontal rail stop and second rail suspension is not permitted, especially in Germany
At 7:23 you sprayed where you tighten down where the cable guide bolts down. Not a moving part
Best fix? Pay $80 every 2 years to have a Pro adjust and lubricate them for you. Im amazed at how much adjustment to springs they do. BTW springs are DEADLY, don't touch them if you don't know what ur doing.
Nice 👍
Thank you 🙏🏽
You need to use silicone free lubricant
I have a chain drive garage door opener do I apply the grease on the chain too?
Yes you can! Just don’t over saturate
because it will attract dust if you use the paste version. Good to lubricate twice a year 👍🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse thanks
I was told never grease chain.
I have a wayne dalton that the spring is inside a barrel. How can i lubricate the spring inside?
Where the metal pole goes through the barrel should be a black bearing. Just do your best to spray some grease around the opening areas. 🙏🏽👍🏽
@@FixThisHouse thanks for the quick reply
good video but i did have to adjust the audio about 17 times
I lubricant my door that part is ok, but the door struggles up /down at arch. What can I do for that?
Please stay tuned! I’ll make a video on that issue 🙏🏽
hammer
He did not mention that the wire ropes break if old and overloaded collapsing the garage door
I’m using Teflon spray. It seems to last for years. Is there any drawbacks to that?
Why not spray the rollers ?
its the spring that make the noise. and it greasing it doesnt help much
So I've lubed my door so much it's like skating on ice. But my door still keeps getting stuck when it's closing about 12" above the ground. For some reason it's a lot harder to push down the last 12 inches. Could it be an alignment issue?
Yes that could be one of the issues, it also be the cable that tension if you have the Wayne Dalton version, but for cable issues I would let the pros handle that because that part of the garage is spring loaded and dangerous to work on if you are not a professional 🙏🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse From my untrained eye it looks like everything is in line. I was trying to avoid calling a pro and pay for a 10 minute visit.
The drum is not a moving part . The bearing which is part of the bearing plate is a moving part.
Thank for the correction 👍🏽😊 I use to have a Wayne dalton 😅
Should use oil on those springs not grease.
what if it is a chain not a belt, lube the chain?
Yes 👍🏽
Lithium grease collects dust and dirt, which can defeat its purpose. Consider using a dry lubricant if you don’t want it to attract dust.
Thank you for the advice
You need to change out your rollers to nylon, those hard plastic rollers are very loud.
Yes i agree! Stay tuned! Still looking into my warranty first 😅
For years I has a horrendous noise coming from my garage door. It was so bad, the neighbors all knew what time I got home in the wee hours of the morning. I tried lubing everything.
One day I was standing in front of the door as the automatic opener was closing it. I looked up and saw the torsion spring bar. Could that be it? I reached up quickly to feel the bar. Sure enough, that thing was vibrating like a big thick piano wire. No wonder it was so loud.
The issue was the aluminum center bracket which supported the torsion spring bar and acted as the middle end caps for the springs. All I did was drill a 1/16" hole through the aluminum block to the hole through which the torsion bar passes. A couple of drops of motor oil or a couple of level pulls of the grease gun and the aluminum center support no longer sets the torsion bar to vibrating like a piano wire.
The door is now quiet as a church mouse. The neighbors no long know my party schedule either!
That is awesome! I’m glad you got the issue fixed! Thank you for sharing your experience and how to solve it! 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse Another tip... The last time I had the torsion bar down to replace a broken spring, I did the calculations on spring length and wire size to get 30+ years of service life out of the springs. I *never* want to replace them again! The springs are significantly longer than those the typical door repair vendor would install. They just install whatever is in the truck at the moment...
The life of the spring is a function of cycles (up and down door movements), the length of the spring (the longer, the better), and the diameter of the spring wire (thicker is better). The two longer/thicker-wire springs required I call a neighbor into service to help lift the torsion bar back into place. But, it's been close to fifteen years so far without a spring issue.
I actually also lube the tracks (railings) so the wheels are more quiet as the roll up and down - I notice a difference in noise reduction. Occasionally, I wipe them clean before lubing them - works for me...
Thank you for the sharing your experience! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
@@FixThisHouse You should never lube the tracks. They'll collect dirt and gum up and make the door closer work harder.
FYI, I have always used regular WD 40 on my garage door hinges and other hinges and it works fine. WD also has Specialist Gel Lube" that goes on thick and doesn't drip and lasts longer.
Thank you for sharing! 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
He’s stating this because WD-40 is a Water Dispersant….WD, not a lubricant.
@@curbowbass6124 I never said it was a lubricant. Where do you see that? I said, "it works fine." He said not to use it. I said it works and it does!
@@bill9653 for a few days/weeks, but you'll be back at it with a real lubricant before long
@@matsudakodo Eric, I don't know what to tell you, but I did this last winter, and they still have no squeaks. I live in NH, so we have cold weather here, but if something works for me, I stay with it. Same thing with my storm doors. Good luck with whatever you use, Bill
Very good techniques but using Lithium on any plastic, like the rollers, is a no no. Lithium damages plastic. Silicone spray should be used instead.
Yes, I mentioned that on the video. Thank you for the input and the support! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
He said that in the video.
Not only that. I find that white lithium gets gummy when it gets cold. In MI winters it can get sticky. So I only use heavy silicone.
I’m sorry, I hate to be this guy but I’m going to be! As a garage door service tech (with 25 years of experience, as of Sept. ‘22) I will say this video if I’m being nice is just kind of ok. It tells you to do many pointless things, not nearly enough important things, and leaves a potential MESS that will stick around for the life of the door. Spray between the drum and the shaft?!?! Really? I’d like to know what the point of that could possibly be?? Also, please please please DO NOT COAT YOUR SPRINGS IN GREASE DO NOT DO IT, I PROMISE YOU ITS NOT WORTH THE MESS. I’ll explain, when that spring breaks it will fling that crap all over your door, wall, ceiling, floor, and/or cars. Not to mention really piss off whoever is going to replace them later, trust me you will buy that tech a new pair of gloves even if you don’t know it, and I’m not talking about $10 gloves. Also I do suggest lube on drums or cables (little bit) as someone else also suggested in comments. And not to lube the rollers? Did I hear that? If I didn’t I do apologize I’m sorry. YES LUBRICATE THE ROLLERS!!! About the rollers, I’ve never been a fan of all steel bearing rollers, the black plastic ones can be great and can literally last forever (if lightly OILED 3-4 times a year), nylon rollers with steel bearings are my favorite and are probably best but still will not last forever and I change mine every 5-8 years. He also missed completely something HUGE that needs lubed, the bearing plates next to the drums. Don’t spray drums where he did but look on other side of drum and you will see a bearing, lube that. As far as the springs go lightly oil and rub in with a rag or towel, please do not grease those springs.
Please ignore my criticism and take it as suggestions from someone who does care and does this day in and day out for a living and supports his family this way. Take this for what it’s worth I plugged no names or specific products here, I have no benefits from this except giving you proper knowledge.
My garage door staggers when I close it and it has increasingly become more staggered. Not sure what’s happening.
One side of the springs is getting tired, or was not installed with the same weight rating spring, or the cable that connects the spring to the door stretched. If you aren't comfortable with high tension springs that can kill you then time to call a garage door company.
Well you didn't show the noise test after spraying the white grease. Bummer.
Hi Jimmy! Yes I did, please check out time stamp 9:09. I used my decibel meter as well 👍🏽😊
My Mercedes car 180B class mak back Breaking noisy spueaks
Really not much of a difference in the "before and after" sound level meter test. Maybe 1 to 2 percent.
Yes it a fairly new door, but good to do this every 6 months. This would have been great to so if it was an older door. Stay tuned, I have another video coming they will make garage door sound ninja! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
@@FixThisHouse Not true that it is only a 1 to 2 percent difference
. A 3dB difference is half the previous level. A 10 dB change would represent 1/10 the previous level. It's a logarithmic scale, not arithmetic.
Ok, so now after reading all of these comments, I’m so confused that I’m just going to continue to put up with my noisy garage door opener.
WD 40 is Not a good lub for the GD it attracks dirt as it sticks to the surfaces of the berarings
The metal shavings in the railing should not be removed as they have a purpose... they are a reason for the installer to return for a repair job when the rollers are damaged. 😜😜 A similar method is used by roofers. They like to leave nails behind in a new gutter so that it will rust faster and has to be repaired. I am not saying all of them are dishonest, but always check the work area after people are done. Some people are just careless or leave their head at home when they go to work.
I’ll give the installer the benefit of the doubt, it was late in the day and he probably just wanted to get home to his family 🙏🏽
@@FixThisHouse ... 👍A good reason that he would never be hired by me again if he couldn't take the time to return and finish his job right. On the other side if he was self-employed in his own house that could be a problem.😜
NEWS FLASH: ROOFING NAILS DONT RUST THEY ARE ALUMINUM! LOL some are stainless or copper and galvanized but they too are not rusting either lol Oxidize is what your looking for this is the white powder like stuff
please people dont go walking your roof lines looking for nails its not worth it if they are they will not burn a hole thru your roof or eaves relax its not rust!
You warned not to lubricate the rollers. Please explain why the roller must not be lubed. They are moving parts.
What is there to lubricate on the roller? It’s a metal shaft press fitted onto a rubber or nylon wheel.
not very much of a difference especially for all that work
For newer doors yes, mine was only 6 months old, but with older doors you will see a significant improvement 👍🏽😊
Regular wd 40 is not a lubricant for anything. It's a cleaner
dud is making for the sake of making videos
WD-40 is garbage as its solvent based it dissolves 100% correct use JIG-a-loo Garage door spay or Teflon spray not so sure the delta has changed but, for the cost of a door could the makers not use bearings instead its like buying a car with no tires or bearings that trun stupid design it a lot like not using stainless steel fuel lines instead use recycled pop can SURPRIZE!!! 6 months old lol hey billy how old is your tesla again?
The drums the cables you are on in fact DO NOT MOVE!
Yup, you are correct 👍🏽😊, just the Wayne dalton versions 😅
You should never use WD40 as a Lubricant. WD40 is not a lubricant. Get a proper silicone-based lube, or if it’s metal-to-metal, use White lithium grease/oil.
Sorry can't watch this to the end with so much bad advice. You need to reread your user manual for the door and the garage door opener.
CHEMICALS!!!!! For God's sake, it's fricking grease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please read the label 👍🏽😊
