Imogene Pass ran from west to east, from Telluride to the summit of Imogene Pass and then down Camp Bird Road to Ouray. This Camp Bird road is the same road that takes you to Yankee Boy Basin. This is a Jeep Badge of Honor trail. We started the day by running Black Bear Pass to Telluride and then ran Imogene Pass back to Ouray . This makes for a great day. If you are uncomfortable running Black Bear Pass, then you can run Ophir Pass to Telluride and that is a great trail too. It has been 7 years since I ran Imogene Pass and it was as good as I remembered.
Our family did this trail from Telliride on a tour. Rode in the back of a Chevy 3/4 or one ton pickup. Be warned, photography is near impossible while the truck is moving. Lots of disconcerting side to side rocking. Loved it. Wish we had taken it all the way to Ouray. Town trip from Telluride to the peak was well over three hours, and it's only a 15 mile round trip.
Thanks for watching! It’s a great trail for sure! The ride to Ouray is great. Maybe you can rent a Jeep next time and run the whole thing. I love this trail! - Geoff
Wow , what a trip who needs the Grand Canyon, Its right there in Colorado, add this to the bucket list, might have to take the Ophir trail, that Black Bear looks like it bites back if your not careful, Great video
Imogene is awesome! Definitely add it to the bucket list. Ophir is cool too but it is just so much shorter. Ophir makes a great loop with Imogene if you don’t want to run Black Bear. Thanks!
@@Colorado4x4 i was just seeing the warning about being eperienced for black bear, looked like lots of carnage on other videos of that trail
Unfortunately a lot of people run Black Bear that shouldn’t and they get into trouble. It’s not difficult but the consequences of rolling down the mountain can be deadly. One of the problems with it is that the town of Telluride has been wanting to close the trail for several years because they’re always having to go up there and rescue people that roll or get off the edge and it is just unfortunate that the future of Black Bear is grim because of this. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 Oh,OK ,common sense and easy relax pace and it can be done,do you have a video on it?
Exactly! I always say that it is not a race. Take your time and be safe. Me and my buddy John are going to make a video soon on this topic. Here is Black Bear ua-cam.com/video/t3t418vM3jI/v-deo.html
Awesome job Geoff! Loved it!
Thanks John!!! We gotta go wheeling soon. I’m starting to get the shakes 😂😂😂
So cool! I will be there in August. My only reservation is tent camping in Bear country...
Nice! I think you will be fine. Now and then there is an encounter but its very rare. We dont have any grizzlies here. Black bear are generally benign. But you still need to follow all bear rules with food and smellables. You could always pack bear spray too. - Geoff
I'm always amazed at the shoes people wear when they drive these roads. What if you have to walk out in flip flops or sandals or your foot slips off the brake or clutch in a tight spot. I always go in good sturdy shoes and ask folks with me to do the same.
I always wear sneakers unless it is wet or muddy. I always keep hiking boots in the back of the Jeep too just in case. I like wearing sneakers because they’re not bulky like hiking boots and it’s easier for me to get excellent throttle control with tennis shoes vs. hiking boots. I can’t stand wearing hiking boots while climbing out of a difficult obstacle, I advise against it actually. Think about race car drivers and their special shoes. I haven’t worn flip flops in many years! 😂
Most of us in Colorado that go into the mountains have lots of extra clothes blankets and water n food because the weather in the mountains changes by the minute and you could be caught in a nasty snowstorm in July or anytime in the mountains
@@coloradoswesternslope8622 amen! Believe me, I am prepared! I know there are plenty of people that are not but we’re always good to go! - Geoff
my flip-flopped foot has never slipped off a pedal my entire life lol this fear seems irrational
Right? Wear whatever works for you is what I say. I don’t wear bulky hiking boots while wheeling and we’re usually in a group anyways so we won’t be walking out - Geoff
😂I do that trail but I start in Ouray and go backwards and that bridge you all went over I go thru the river and bypass the bridge😁bridge all the trail bridge off from Ouray side of the mountain and they are fun also and they have one of the nastiest trails in there also!!!!! We love wheeling around Telluride and Oury!! Ps just outside Montrose on hwy 90 just as u pass the gun range or shooting range on the right you go up a hill and on the right is a opening and it has nasty trails and serious rock crawling its maintained by a jeep group I think and not very many people know about it except locals
Oh man this intrigued me! I think you’re talking about Die Trying, Calamity Canyon??
I know this is an older video, but I just checked it out in preparation for my trip to CO. We plan on doing this trail. I haven't done any shelf roads before and I'm curious about the true "difficulty" of the trail. From everything I have seen it doesn't seem too difficult, minus the nerves. I'm confident and smart in my ability and think it is doable. Just wanted to get someone's opinion who has taken this trail before. Awesome video by the way, very helpful. I also read your comment to Edward about your recommendations for each pass. May go that route as well.
There are no technical obstacles or tricky sections. The difficulty rating comes from the exposed shelf roads and that is about it. I really think trails should have two rating classes: a rating on technical difficulty and then a rating on risk or exposure. Honestly, Imogene isn’t that spooky (to me) as far as shelf roads go. The most spooky spot is the lower section (from the Telluride side) as it seems the most exposed. The last push to the summit isn’t that bad as there usually is a berm on the outside and the road is somewhat cambered toward the mountain. - Geoff
@@Colorado4x4 I remember going over this road in 1969 in a two wheel drive truck from the way it looks now I would say it has never been maintained scene then.
That’s awesome! I think it just gets a little maintenance on the last push to the summit there but that’s about it. All of these trails are getting torn up pretty bad over the last few years!
LOVED IT...Great Job...
Thanks for watching Anthony!
@@Colorado4x4 OMG The View is Spectacular
It’s an awesome trail for sure. You need to check it out!
I did this in my Ridgeline.
Nice! Good to know. It’s such a great trail 👍🏻
Imogene is a great trail...
It is. I love it. Glad we ran it this year! It has been 7 years since I wheeled in the San Juan’s.
I loved Imogene! My passengers, not so much! lol
Hahaha. It’s a great trail but can definitely be spooky to people who aren’t used to shelf roads!
You guys are way cool..
😁😁😁. Thanks! Do you go wheeling at all???
I'm heading through Million Dollar Hwy next week and venturing through a few trails (Alpine Loop, Ouray area) and considering Imogene. Going at it solo in my 2018 JL Rubi out of Arizona. Any advice, things to consider and watch for (other than the weather and the beautiful scenery) for this desert dweller? How challenging? Technical? Needed/Suggested mods? Looking forward to this video
Thanks
Thanks Edward! I say go for it. How many days will you be there? Where will you be staying? If it were me and it was my first time, I would run Cinnamon Pass from Silverton to Lake City. Have lunch in Lake City and then take Engineer Pass back to Silverton. Day 2 you could take Ophir Pass from Hwy 550 to Telluride. Have lunch in Telluride and then take Imogene Pass to Ouray. Imogene is a super trail. You really can’t go wrong with any trail down there. Your JL will be fine stock 100%. I always air down tires for a more comfortable ride so I’ve got a compressor and a CO2 tank. Just make sure you have some good maps or GPS. The Charles Wells book for Colorado trails is the best, but you can map them out on a GPS first instead of getting the book. It’s a great book though! Another good loop is to take Corkscrew Pass to Hurricane Pass and there is another Pass in there I can’t remember the name. None of these trails are technically challenging except for Poughkeepsie. The biggest challenge is the mental aspect of the shelf roads and driving them with occasional oncoming traffic. You’re going to have a blast!!! I first ran these trails in 2002 and fell in love. We lived down there outside of Farmington, NM and would hit them all the time. Hope this helps and let me know if I can help any more. Looks like weather should hold hopefully for you!
Im sure you are aired down a little bit at least, the jeeps are doing real well not breaking loose, enginesjust cruising along
Yes sir. I usually drop down to about 15 pounds for easy trails like this and about 10 pounds for the harder stuff.
Nice my man.
Thanks Tom! You’re not going to guess what we saw driving down the road in Breckenridge this Saturday! 🤔
Colorado4x4 Clue me in brother.
A new 2021 Bronco!!! All black. Wish I could have gotten a picture but it looked so cool in person. We were walking down the street and it was just cruising on by!!! Had the Michigan dealer plates on it so they must have been testing it in the high country!!!
Colorado4x4 That’s really cool. Anxious to order mine in December and trust Ford got it right. I love Imogene Pass and really glad you shared this one with us.....thanks again.
I was pumped to see it. I can’t wait to drive one. Maybe I shouldn’t? My Jeep would probably get mad if it found out I liked a different rig 😂😂😂
Too bad that Black Bear Pass is only one way.
Does Imogene really take 10 hours as I've seen in descriptions?
No way! Pick up the Charles Wells guidebook. It’s the best for Colorado. Or look at trailsoffroad.com. They both have pretty accurate times. Imogene takes about 3 hours or a little more depending on how much you stop and enjoy the scenery. The Tomboy mine is definitely worth checking out. It’s such a great trail. You will love it. If you want a good loop, take Black Bear Pass into Telluride from Hwy 550 and then come back to Ouray back over Imogene. Or you can take Ophir Pass (easier than Black Bear) from 550 and then drive the highway to Telluride and then take Imogene back to Ouray. An even easier route to complete the loop is Last Dollar road. Enjoy it! - Geoff
is “poser rock” not on this trail or did i miss it (?)
Yea it’s that little point right? Where the commercials the rigs on the edge of?
I gotta quit watching i was there 3 weeks ago. I wish i was there right now
😂 the San Juan’s are my favorite mountain range in Colorado! We haven’t been this year but we’re going this Friday to run Black Bear and some other trails. I love it down there!
Trail looks tight in some spots. Can the road hold a Power Wagon?
It can be tight in spots but you can do it! My buddy John just posted this video of him and his friend in a Power Wagon! ua-cam.com/video/Zqex_DV6HIo/v-deo.html
