This is probably THE soundtrack of a whole generation of swedish indie kids, it's been covered by several other artists, it's had a rock club named after it and there's even a memorial stone in Slottsskogen, Göteborg, that says "Spela Shoreline"! Absolute classic for anyone who's got a relation to it, maybe less so for people that mainly get their music from the radio. Don't think it ever got much airtime on the bigger stations.
I mean you don't necessarily listen to radio music just cause you're not into indie. Especially since indie rock like Broder Daniel is played on the radio constantly lmao.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shoreline and I'm not trying to act as if my music is cooler or anything, just wanted to add a different perspective. Maybe they played Shoreline 1-2/day and that felt as if it had no air time, while I would've been happy if they played a song just once 😂😂.

Fun fact: when I was younger there was a place that had "varannan shoreline" nights, meaning that every other song was literally just shoreline. Yes, LITERALLY. Shoreline, another song, shoreline, another song, shoreline. It was the weirdest and funniest shit ever 😂

The "tattoo or sticker or.." under his eye is a BD star. Hundreds of thousands of mainly teens had those under their eyes around Sweden for a decade. That and the big fluffy hair, especially in the neck (knullrufs), extreme happy promiscuity, and special clothes were huge cultural signifiers. They were star-shaped sequins! :D
Even though I was way too metal back then to like this music and got really annoyed when people mixed us up with the indie kids, because of "alternative clothing", I really did like the indie girls 😂. I was a teenager myself during this time, just to be clear 😅🫣
I think you need to research it more to get close to know how much of an Icon this band was/is. Probably the biggest band in the alternate scene, an Icon,a recluse and a genius. Watch the documentary 👌
I was a 14 year old girl when this song was released and it was my jam! I one hundred percent agree that the lyrics are basic, but I think that was a smart move to capture younger teenagers who kind of fit the image of broder daniels teenage angst :)
Broder Daniel is probobly one of the most polarizing bands in Sweden, you either loved them or you hated them. They were all about the emotions and if you couldn't relate to the emotions it was pretty hard to like. At least the first album, when the singer of the band said, and i quote "rehearsal is only for losers".
I think the Nordic depression is pretty unique. A whole country can be depressed and relate 100% to ONE song. At the same time. Or at different times. The point is; the lyrics won't make sense to someone who doesn't understand what BD are all about = sadness, frustration and relating to teenagers in any way they can basically. This song, if I was to really interpret it, would be kids singing about a boring town where nothing happens, where no one listens to them (especially not their parents /"the office building"\) and a town where basically you're born, you do nothing and then you die young because what's the point of living in a place where nothing happens? I think people interpret it in their own way, but I can totally get your point of view here. Depressing (I mean REAL sadness, not just broken hearts) songs don't really get that much attention in America.
I think he was referring to the vocabulary, rather than the meaning of the lyrics. Remember that English is his first language, which means he's less likely than the average Swede to get excited about English lyrics that could have been written by a middle schooler. 😉
I think the success of this song comes from it being both sad and sweet at the same time and also because many people can relate to the lyrics about having a hard time in your youth. For me as a swede and Broder Daniel fan the lyrics sound great but I'm not surprised if they sound weird for a native english speaker who is not very into this band. :)
The singer is generally struggling with spoken english. 😄 this reminds me of the song "Undo", Sweden's entry to Eurovision a couple of years ago. People with English as their native language had huge issues with the grammar in that song. 😄

'Whirlwind' är inte heller något lyricistiskt mästerverk, men som med många av BD's låtar fångar den en känsla som resonerade med den tidens ungdom.
Always refreshing watching your reaction and that you always speak your mind! 'Shoreline' is the only BD-song I can stand barely because of the music. The lyrics, as you said, leaves a bit to be desired. I think this channel needs some more serious rock numbers, so please react to 'Var är vargen', 'CC Cowboys' by Imperiet and 'En vacker död stad' by Thåström as others have mentioned earlier. Pretty sure you find the lyrics a bit more intriguing than in this song...:)

There are two versions of CC Cowboys, the original is in swedish (except part of the chorus) and far superior. To be found on the "Blå Himlen Blues"-album. They made one album with lyrics translated to english, it isn't very good I think.

Med det sagt, så tror jag att det är ganska oundvikligt att personer med olika bakgrund kommer att skriva olika slags texter (och kanske musik), vilket gör att vissa kan relatera medan andra inte kan det. Om det räddar några liv, så är det gott nog för mig. I en perfekt värld skulle vi mötas halvvägs, men så fungerar det ju inte än så länge tyvärr.

Well. There are children rhymes. Henrik Berggren invented teenage rhymes and they sucked. Broder Daniel probably would have been great if they hadn't carried that mother load of crap vocals and crap lyrics. Or I can be totally wrong and that's what made them interesting. ?
