Those! The Ultimate Giant Monster Movie Mash (1930s to 1960s)

- Note to purists: Because I am mixing and matching some of the monsters, there are a few color clips which I converted to black and white for continuity's sake, though full color is used at the end of the video.
Watching this reminded me again that Ray Harryhausen is still the undisputed king of stop motion. His monsters are always recognizable for their quality
I saw every one of those movies as a kid! Good times!
Sci-Fi Theater and Monster Theater were the shit in the 70's!
Where did the wolf thing come from?
Chiller and Science Fiction Theatre for me in the '60's! Great Stuff!
They always came on tv late Friday or Saturday night and you knew to get the popcorn made.
No cable or satellite bill, just
good 'ol rabbit ears on top of the tv
Exactly!
Boy! Those were great nights.
Cool homage to our beloved behemoths. When I was little and watched "Them!" on TV during a weekend, that sound that the giant ants made creeped me out so much. It still has a certain magic to it, that eerie noise. 🐜
Thanks for your comment, Eduardo.
Film Fantastic Hmm, wonder if the sound was utilized in a movie before "Them!" ... could be.
I actually liked Cloverfield. I was afraid that it was going to be "Blairwitch Godzilla". But I saw it in the theater and the sound editing was incredible. It was a totally different feel than the DVD.
SCi-Fi movies that have the trait of making long segments with real abrasive noises, imagine Godzilla giving a speech, just aint getting any show time here.
Film Fantastic compare Them! To king Ghidorah
Pause the video at 1:11, you can see Lionel Lines on the tender, AND the tender is backward in the train's consist--the coal should be directly behind the engine.
Good catch! I noticed that too - lol
Absolutely superb compilation that will live on for future generations of UA-cam viewers brave enough to watch and not panic!
Nice of you to say, Bob!
Another fine FredFlix production. I miss these old 50's black & white masterpieces of horror. The small monsters never scared me it was the giant or nuclear created ones that frightened me as a kid.
Nice to hear, Curious George.
@@FredFlix Excellent job. This video brings back memories of my childhood. Spending the night at my cousin's house watching Friday night monster movies while eating home made popcorn cooked on top of the stove. By the way, ask your viewers which 50's movie would they like to see remade today.
Some great clips from classic movies. I can't recall how many times I have watched each of these movies, and still enjoy them. And, I am in my mid 60s, but still a kid at heart.
Whitch is better "tarantula" or "earth vs the spider"
Like for "tarantula"
Comment for "earth vs the spider"
John Agar Vs Edward Kemmer . The Giant from the Unknown and Earth Vs the Spider. Edward Kemmer. Tarantula , Revenge of the Creature. John Agar.
“Tarantula” is by far the better film. It’s not aimed at the teenage drive-in crowd, nor does it suffer from the cheesy effects that were the hallmark of Bert I. Gordon movies.
A wonderful compilation showing similar events (monsters looking in windows, destroying landmarks, etc.) from different movies. Great memories. Thank you.
You're welcome, Redbeard.
When I was young I had a little trouble with Them!. It wasn't the creepy giant ants, or their screeching. It was seeing Santa Claus messing with giant ants. I had seen and was happy with Edmund Gwenn as Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street. Then, along comes Them! and it has Santa fighting giant ants. I was young, and I think it was the first time I had to confront the concept that an actor might do more than one part in their lifetime.
Cecil Kellaway as the prof who gets et in the bathyscaph by the Rhedosaurus in Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
You're getting better and better at this! I really do appreciate your effort to encapsulate our past (those of us between 65-55-ish). Thanks, Fred.
Thanks for saying that, Tim. It's encouraging.
Great video Fredflix, back to a time when stop motion and other effects ruled and CGI was not even a bad dream.
Thanks, Roger.
There is nothing wrong with CGI if used properly. What I fear is remakes of the classic sci-fi movies like “Them!”, “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms,” “Forbidden Planet,” or “Tarantula.” Hollywood is so dumbed down these days that the films will be done with tongue firmly planted in cheek, as if the filmmakers were too good for their material.
OMG this is sooo cool. It like a love letter to the 50s and 60s monster movies, and it show everything that is cool about these films. Good job dude, good job.
I appreciate that, Nqqthan. Glad you enjoyed it.
All those giant movie monsters, but again I say NONE can top the King Of The Monsters, Godzilla! 🐲
Thanks again for the memories, FredFlix!
You're welcome, Luis. Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Well we got a new monster in town,he ain't mean and green but he is mean and Orange !
And about as stupid as a giant insect.
We need monsters like these in Washington DC so they can eat Congress
Shock- theatre classics loved it every Saturday miss those days 😁😁😁😁
This was great. what memories. some excellent movies some not so good. all had an impact on my growing up. Thanks for this.
As a kid I loved watching those movies on TV. I have several of them on DVD now.
That was excellent. I remember watching each one of those during my childhood of the 60's. Thanks for the memories.
You're welcome, Kirk.
What movie is that at 1:58
Where I grew up, there was one movie theater that seemed to specialize in monster movies. It seemed as if there was always at least one and sometimes two on a double feature. Even better, of course, was seeing them at the drive-in, which also showed a lot of these terrors. God, I loved them.
Thank you FredFlix really enjoyed going back to my childhood great fun.
You're welcome, Donald. Your childhood is my life.
WOW...this was a lot of fun to watch! I saw 'Destroy All Monsters' on a triple bill along with 'Ghidrah, The Three Headed Monster' and 'The Green Slime' at a drive-in in 1970. I was 5 years old and it had a profound impact on me. I've been a life long Godzilla fan ever since. Thanks much for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it, abbagodz.
This montage is absolutely AWESOME, every grade D horror monster movie best out takes, I love it
"Them", the 1950's movie about mutant ants; in that opening scene a little girl who is a mute survivor, is laying in an ambulance while the attendant and cop talk. Out of sight comes the chirping noise of a mutant, and while both men look away for the source the little girl sits bolt upright, a closeup of her face, silently telegraphing to the audience the horrors to come, and then she slowly reposes when the sound fades; the two men having entirely missed that telling moment.
Now that scene right there is movie-making as it used to be folks.
I have to agree ...THEM is one of my favorite movies. When the Dr. lets her smell the Formic Acid and she screams . She was a good little actress
Yes, that was a very well thought out scene. They do not make movies like Them anymore.
Them had James Arness in it. The beginning of the end about grasshoppers had Peter Graves. They are brothers.
@Douglas Davis I was just referring to James Arness who was in the movie Them, about giant ants.
@Douglas Davis no kidding. He did play the thing in 1951.
No giant monsters were hurt during the filming of these movies.
Oh yes they were. Not only hurt, but even killed.
Another great one. Really a fan of the 50s monster movies.
Then we think alike, Ed.
And we accepted all those creatures as so real to be believed.
yeah .. though a lot better than the garbage today.
I wonder why no one else thought of making a monster movie using only the best bits of all the other monster movies? Call it "AHHHHHH! The Movie"
There are a lot of documentaries on old monster movies that use the best bits.
About that woman who caught her dress in the car door: Apparently, she thought it over and decided she'd rather die than lose her dignity.
Even as a kid I wondered why she didn't just open the car door...
@@zoppie One thing common to all great art films of this sub genre are galactically stupid people getting eaten alive by the monster. All she had to do was open the door, that takes a lot less time and effort than tearing off the dress. Even stupider than that was the cop who emptied his K-38 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special (substantially less powerful than a 9mm) -- all six rounds -- into a 70 million ton reptile with skin tougher than the hull of a U.S. battleship. Then he stands there for 14 geologic epochs while the monster bends over to pick him up with his teeth and swallow him alive. I always burst out with a cheer when I see stupid people getting killed.
Excellent compilation of monster or kaiju movies from the United States, Great Britain and Japan.
Glad you enjoyed it.
That was a great little treat. "Them" was my favorite Big Monster Flick.Godzilla was my favorite monster. All of Ray Harryhausen's movies were classic.
Glad you enjoyed it, andremax77.
Wish some one would put these on UA-cam. I was born in 1957, THEM came out in 1954, the black scorpion 1957, Beginning of the END: 1957, The Deadly Mantis 1957, and so many others.
Many of them are on UA-cam.
@@Setmose If they are, then 1. they are under a different name which I find often in order to get to horror/zombie, and such, or two you have to pay to watch them, which I can't. But thanks any way.
"The End?"
I sure hope not!
Great job, Fred. I always admire your attention to detail, such as maintaining continuity by showing color footage in black & white. My favorite sequence was the combining of the Triffids with the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
Man, I love _all_ of these films! Just yesterday I was telling a 23 year old friend about the (not so) special effects in "The Beginning of the End." :)
During the train derailment montage I was hoping for a glimpse of the Giant Claw.
Maybe next time...
Thanks, Thomas. All of these movies, good and bad, retain their charm. But The Giant Claw? No, I just couldn't go there. However, it's in an upcoming video.
Those!... Good one. I knew it was going to be fun watching, the instant, I saw the opening! Love it, Fred!! 🐜🐲👍
Thanks, David.
Thanks for the memories. l watched Gorgo in the sixties as a child. It came on at 11P.M. and my grandma watched the whole movie with me. It's the only time l saw it. She may be gone but not forgotten. Thanks again.
You're welcome, Perry. I saw it at the theater. We came in in the middle, had to stay and watch it again.
Wonderful! A special Monsters, Compilation of all of the times!
Thank you.
You really hit a soft spot with this video. There aren't many things that I love more than classic monster movies.
I'm a sucker for them too, BB.
As a 90 kid I loved these movies and yes I was scared of those monsters when I saw them on my TV. My parents made sure that I grow up loving and respecting old movies.
I like how you used black-and-white clips for even the color films, for that is how most of us would have seen them on TV back in the day...
I think it helped the continuity.
Made me smile. Thanks for the childhood flashbacks!!
Thanks for the editing and upload . Much appreciated.
Thank you, Donovan.
if I had a dollar for every one of these movies I didn't see, I would be broke.
if i had a dollar for every famous landmark destroyed in monster/disaster movies, id be rich
"Get the Hammer & Nails!" That'll learn him
A few of these these clips have special effects that are quite surprisingly good for the time.
Oh no, it's a giant crab monster! Send lots of butter, quick! Thanks Fred, this brings back memories of watching these kinds of movies on Creature Double Feature on Channel 56 in Boston during the late '60s and early '70s.
I kept waiting for MST3K guys to pop up ! This was fun , thanks
You're welcome, Gil.
Saw a little bit of Reptillicus in there! That was one of the first giant movie monster films I remember from my early youth.
That was just about every monster from every monster movie except the 40ft woman I remember from Friday night Sammy Terry horror movie show. He would come out of his coffin and scare us kids in the 60's with a double feature. A little black and white TV with rabbit ears on top just like Carl Evans remembers. The commercial would come on and we would have to go to the bathroom and notice that Dad was no longer in the living room with us, which meant he was hiding in my room or my sister's room and the bathroom was after them down the hall. We had to go pee but knew he was going to grab one of us as we ran down the hall. Good memories of when I was a little kid. Peace and be good to each other.
I love the movie 'Them!'
Ever since I saw that film, I never looked at underground train tunnels the same again.
Ahh the memories of childhood, sitting in front of the tv Friday & Saturday nights just waiting for these movies to show 😊
This feels like drifting in and out of consciousness during a late 90s AMC monsterfest.
Hey FredFlix, its 2 or 3 in the morning and I couldnt sleep and decided to watch videos on UA-cam (as one does anymore) and stumbled on your channel. What a hilarious treat! Talk about a great trip down memory lane. I am just a couple years younger than you so I am relating to EVERYTHING you are posting. What a great way to suffer a night of insomnia! Appreciate you taking the time to present our generation's exciting era of maturity. I have subscribed and thank you very much.
Welcome aboard, Jim. I'm sorry you had to lose sleep to discover FredFlix but I hope it'll be worth it to you.
Thank you so much for the old sifi movie's I'm more of a ray harryhausen fan but what you did is great.
Harryhausen did several of the movies I depicted, Terry, as you no doubt know. But I left his fantasy film monsters for perhaps another video.
It Came From Beneath The Sea(with the "quintopus"[thanks to budget restrictions, it could only have FIVE arms]), 20 Million Miles To Earth, and Beast From 20,000 Fathoms were Harryhausen films(he liked having huge things falling on people)
letterboxd.com/lordcookie/list/the-films-of-ray-harryhausen-ranked/
How sad is it that I used to love these movies as a kid.
Why is it sad? I love them NOW!
Even now that I'm an adult, I feel a little uncomdortable to remember those monsters that scared me in my childhood ha ha
Took my baby brother to see a Godzilla movie in 1971. He passed away in 2011. Good memories !!!!
Big Rhed is still my fave! Thanks a million, Ray Harryhausen!
Love these cool flicks from the past. i kinda wanted those monsters to win at times.
Absolutely loved the cop hiding his gun behind him, as he confronted the dinosaur.
You mean Reptillious
my bad wrong movie.
Absolutely AWESOME!! Nice of you to include Clint Eastwood!! Great stuff Fred!!!!
Was hoping someone else would notice his appearance! Apparently, he & Miss Corday were long term friends! (she even hade a bit part in one of his Harry Callahan flics!)
Thank you for bringing back so many memories of me and my brother watching these monster movies under a blanket, scared to death! Lol, looking back and thinking "that's what we were afraid of??" But those days were indeed scary and so much fun! Thanks for the memories =D
You're welcome, Jeanette. Today's kids have a reason to be scared. The movies are horrific. They are unable to enjoy being scared the way we were.
Great clips of some of my favourites. No cgi than .
Wow that was fantastic! I loved those movies as a kid, always felt sad when the monsters died at the end. Also I second Michael McAllister's suggestion to do a Harryhausen tribute. Thanks for a great video!
You're welcome, unevenspleener.
I love all this old stuff!!!! They don't make them like that anymore!!!! Keep up the great work!!!! God bless you and yours!!!!
Thanks, Karin.
Miss those days of these movies.. nothing today.. reality crap.. favourite was good ol Godzilla... his roar was very memorable .. the other movies I saw also, use to run home after getting candy on Halloween night to see these and then later years, here movie Saturday theater matinees with these and other movies...... now.. no more...... :(
Really great monster movies in this selection (and even some bad ones, but they have their charm as well). Long live the classic creatures!
Those movies were awesome luv them
Can you please do a dedication to Ray Harryhausen? Thanks again!
There are many Ray Harryhausen tributes already on UA-cam, but if I can think of a different spin, I'll do it.
FredFlix, How about a tribute to Russ Meyer and Rodger Corman? LMAO
Russ Meyer...ahhhh!
FredFlix I heard that the headstone in his grave said something to the effect of ...Russ Meyer- King of the nudies! I was glad to do it.... LMAO Between the satire he was known for and his continual use of unusually big breasted actresses, the man was a legend! 😁 At first he was strongly opposed by feminists, later in time they revered him for empowering women! Quite ironic... 🤣
Oh _heck yeahs!_ The King of Monster makers!
That was great, Fred! I'm only sorry I forgot my popcorn! 😲
The Morlocks will be featured in the sequel, morlockmeat. But that won't be coming until Halloween night.
FredFlix - My favorite night! 😀👍
Gojira one of the most noted and amazing monsters
Thanks for bringing back my Saturday evenings as a kid!!
Just wanted to let you know the day in the life series is great. My parents were class of 69 and 70. I came along in 71. My parents grew up in Chattanooga so I figure your experience growing up was somewhat similar. I love the Charleston area. I live in western WA now and look at southern stuff when I get to missing my mother. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome, Stephen. My best friend is named Mark Grahn, who lives near Chas., SC, now but he is from Virginia I believe. That's an unusual spelling of Grahn. Maybe you two are related?
I remember it so well, ''It came from beneath the sea" giant octopus. Fun at the movies. Thanks for this post.
You're welcome, tundratomo.
Those
Was the days
Thanks for the memories
I needed a good laugh
Those!
Makes me nostalgic for fallout 3...
Nice job showing Clint Eastwood as the fighter pilot from Tarantula
People keep mentioning Clint Eastwood, but didn't any of you recognize Peter Graves? And Lee van Cleef was in that same movie with him, but wasn't shown in this clip.
So sad that it's so hard to find most of these anymore.. I'd love to watch them.
Same!
I love those giant bug and (absolutely non scientific) science fiction movies. Thanks for making this.
You're welcome, CC.
Loved them one and, brings back good memories. Thanks.
You're welcome, OPS.
Man i remember the days when movies were just less than an hour long....simple but good ol times.
They were a little OVER an hour. Almost never under.
I'm sure lots of people know that Clint Eastwood is the fighter plane pilot.
Great video compilation.
52yo and I still love this stuff. I've seen about half of these movies.
Thanks, THFC.
Just watching the classy people and those beautiful Streets that time is breaking my heart everything became rubbish now except the internet
"Get the hammer and nails"(4:56) I'm so glad you included that part!
Hahaha....but that chick, man was she hot, hot, hot....
Well done Fred! Very nice collection of money shots. Liked the scorpions/train near the beginning!
Thanks, Tom.
I was 8 years old when I went with my older brothers to watch "Them". It scared me so much, that I spent most of the movie in the lobby, pretending to study the candy machine, and go in and out of the boys room, because I didn't want to admit that I was scared 💩less!,......😂🤣😂. Good memories. Thanks again, Fred.
I don't know why, but I've never been scared watching monster movies...only thrilled. I guess even at 7 years old, I knew there was no real danger. But, years later, I gotta say, The Excorcist scared the crap outta me and I couldn't sleep well for a week.
I remember these movies while enjoying popcorn and a cherry coke !
Another fabulous selection Snuggle-pie, Gorgo demolishing London bridge is fabulous, and Godzilla was my fave, I even had a Godzilla keyring with a cheap plastic replica of the monster with glowing eyes. Being so geographically close to Japan, we were saturated with their monster movies. The American monster movies were more for TV and played late night. My other favourite genre was The Samuari, and when Shinatro the Samuari came to Australia we were fortunate to go see him, it was a blast, we screamed our heads off with joy...hahahaha
I enjoyed your comment, snookums. A Godzilla key ring? You are a girl after my own heart (I wish).
Please Stand By For Fawning Praise: Great compilation! Truly you are as much a fan of the sub-genre as I. But what I really love is the thematic pairings of the different films! & Janet Scott was so cute! Maybe you could add her to one of your 'Old-school Starlets' list! (If you haven't already!)
Janette Scott was incredible! It was such a waste in Crack in the World when husband Dana Andrews couldn't or wouldn't have sex with her. But, yeah, old monsters R me.
Them near the end. " Make me a Sargent, charge the booze. ".
My favorite line in the entire picture!!! Wondered if anyone else noticed that!!! And this guy was the first one to get killed in the old The Blob movie as well!!
Make me a Sargent....ants big uns. And they went in there. Thx for the compliment!
Some times when mother wanted me to get up and go to school I would pull the blanket over my head and repeat that line. She never found out where it came from. But it did get some laughs.
Thank you for this compilation of life changing art, truly an intellectual overload. So much to absorb, so much to contemplate, my mind is a log jam of thoughts as I try to sort out the implications of the classic themes running through these clips. This had almost everything: Giant arachnids making electronic noises (and they were probably radioactive, too) it was only missing a tick; phenomenally stupid people being torn to shreds; some cheesy special effects (some almost decent ones, too, unfortunately), a hint of theremin music, a narrator berating the human race for its arrogance, and -- TA-DA! -- a question mark after "The End".
And you did a great job editing these. Thumbs Up.
The railway industry’s worst nightmare: a King Kong & Black Scorpion team-up! 😱
Another superb video, Fred! ..."Oh no, it wasn't the airplane, it was beauty that killed the beast!" 😂 You are the man, Fred! You're definitely my go-to guy for my regular dose of nostalgia! I was always partial to a classic low budget comedic/monster type flick called "The thing with two heads" starring Ray Milland & Rosie Greer.... Funny as hell, if anyone hasn't caught this flick, give it a view! It's a ridiculously cheesy film that any midnight movie theatre would be proud to show! 🤣 Not too many theatres showing those zany flicks anymore, such a shame! No better place in the world to take a first date in those days! 🤣 Lots of folks participating in strange ways, like the comments you'd find in the old Mystery Science Theatre or perhaps someone hurling cooked spaghetti across the audience when there's a creepy tension and the audience is on edge! LMAO! Good times, good times! Those certainly were the days! Doesn't anyone remember those films that had ridiculous special effects like "Smell-o- vision" and certain selected chairs in the theatre that were wired to trigger a mild shock? I feel bad that the younger generations never got to experience the weird atmosphere & the novelty special effects that they once had! Do you folks remember those things? Or is this a younger fan base of Fredflix that only experienced the antics of the Rocky Horror picture show audience? Inquiring minds want to know....
William Castle was the master of the gimmick film, as you probably know, David. I think the audience for this video will run the gamut...several generations love the old monsters.
FredFlix Hope your right, Fred. Those gimmicks were priceless & timeless, hopefully younger viewers will experience it! Castle was indeed the mastermind of those treasures... 😁 I only know of a handful of theatres across the country that show the movies with these special effects, only wish there were more! I imagine they faced a few lawsuits? Remember the gimmick where you had to sign a medical disclaimer and there were "nurses" walking around the audience checking people's pulses? PT Barnum himself would've be mighty proud of that gimmick! 😁
Rodan was such an underrated monster.....👍
2:00 is from "Night of the Demon" which is a good film, but more of a supernatural monster than a giant one.
Well, yes, in that the demon is summoned from wherever via witchcraft instead of a nuclear explosion - but it is undeniably giant when it does appear.
@@hebneh True, but it only fully appears in the first and last scenes. Most of the film only hints at its existence. Whereas a film like "Them" the giant ants appear in all the action segments.
Giant Monster movies! Yess! The old time Horror films. Nowadays people try to tell me Godzilla, King Kong and the likes such as Gamera are not Horror, but if they did their research they'd know it was considered Horror.
😦 Dude... you can't stop the train every time there's a monster next to the tracks. I got to get to work!
Ha!
Love it , not all l know l saw that Movie with that Giant spider that made of Doctore heart attack , it was a baby untill got face to face with the Jets behind the Montans.
1930 : Oh my God, it looks so realistic...😨
2018 : Da fuq is that sh*t 😂
Nothing like a good giant monster movie.
The good old days.
I can name every one of these! I wonder what that says about me? LOL! Great job!
Thanks, Virginia.
Great homage!! Well done!!!
Thanks, Michael.
