- Ricky gets fed up with Lucy buying so many new hats. They decide to see who can hold out the longest: she has to stop buying hats and he can't lose his temper.
I Love Lucy is an American television sitcom starring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley. The black-and-white series originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957, on CBS. All 180 episodes aired on Mondays.
In total 180 episodes of I Love Lucy were produced, plus a pilot episode. The pilot, which was not made for broadcast and did not air as part of the show's original run, is generally not counted as one of the episodes and therefore listed separately for reference. It is, however, available on DVD and Blu-ray releases of the first season. According to Keith Thibodeaux, who played Little Ricky in the later episodes, Desi Arnaz had quite an explosive temper in real life. However, Lucy didn't just sit back and take it like she did on television. She yelled right back at him!
I've seen different interviews with Keith. However I've never heard this part about them. Thanks for shedding some more light on them. I did hear about his drinking and womanizing and they fought.
The whole reason they created the show was so Lucy could keep Desi home and keep both eyes on him. It worked for awhile, but sadly Desi found cracks in the windows and resumed his cheating and drinking.

$50 in the mid 50's is about $552 today. Yeah, my husband would explode too if I'd spent that kind of money on a hat of all things.
More like $507 but STILL a ridiculous price for a hat. Even today a top of the line men's genuine fur felt dress hat won't run you that much. And that's a LOT more material! But she DID look awful cute in that hat!
Not even if I were to attend a royal wedding I will spend that amount on a hat 😦 .... I mean for the price of two you could buy a really nice couch 🛋

Ricky must be.doing pretty good down at the club to be able to give Lucy an allowance for clothes, hats, furniture and groceries.
$49.50 in 1954 is like $507 today! That's INSANE for a hat. Especially a woman's hat which has very little material. I don't blame Ricky for letting loose with the "mira tien e cosa blah blah blah." I mean, I wear GOOD men's dress hats and I don't spend anywhere NEAR that much. Sure, the best ones made out of shaved beaver fur will run you like $400 if its a Stetson or from Italy. But as an animal lover, I only wear wool felt dress hats.

My mom used to drool over Lucy’s dresses and suits and hats. They were very stylish and not inexpensive. In 1953 my mom was wearing a $1.50 cotton house dress (coat). She’d pay the traveling salesman .25¢ per week for them. He’d sell dish towels, aprons, and other things.

Yes.. Back in the day people would dress-up To the Nine’s to go to a baseball game.. My grandmother did back in the day with her hair done with a nice dress or a suit with white gloves on.. I watched these episodes when they were new. I was about 8 when it started and about 14 when it ended. I loved watching, but it seemed to me New York City was a very strange place, and rather old-fashioned. I didn't know any couples where the man scolded the woman as if she were a child. I didn't know any women who would take it. Maybe before the War, but the War changed people. Before the War my mother worked in an office and was continually bullied by one of the old employees. Then came the war, and my mother quit to be with her husband until he was shipped out. After that she went back to work at the same place, but she was changed. As the bully herself put it, "Watson, you're changed since you went into the army!" I Love Lucy in many ways was set in a prewar world.

@@retroguy9494 When a person is in a healthy, mature marriage, any money that comes into the house, is their money. There is no his and her money, unless there is an agreement for how any extra is spent, once the bills are paid. My mother was a stay at home mom and there was never an argument with dad, about who gets what, because they always discussed how their money was going to be spent. There are plenty of stay at home dads, now, and it is the same thing for them.

Interestingly, most cultures before the modern age had women controlling and managing the money- since they were the ones who would buy food, clothes for the family, etc. It's all subjective

I still think it's absurd in 2023! Although I don't mind occasionally paying $50 on amusement and water park tickets like Dollywood or Wild Adventures. Places like Disney parks or Universal are out of our price range, especially there hotels. We sacrifice eating out or buying clothes or going to the movies to pay for modest trips.
I never understood why Ricky never had a business accountant who gave Lucy a allowance .

There is a show with an Accountant, that gives Lucy money after the bills are paid.
Lucy was upset that she only ended up with $5 to last her the whole month after the accountant took nearly all her allowance money to pay about 3 months of back bills, including rent! And to get their electricity and phone turned back on. Lucy actually received the majority of Ricky's money ( she was supposed to pay bills, buy groceries, get what little Ricky needed, etc.) She actually has enough each month to cover her weekly beauty salon trips, buy a new outfit, go to the movies with Ethel every week, and other fun stuff. The problem was that Lucy was a shopaholic with little to no understanding of the value of money. She enjoyed the "high" she got from buy so much, then didn't care about the purchase anymore the next day and had to do it again. In the accountant episode, if Lucy had waited for another month with the accountant, she would've ALOT more then $5 left. Little Ricky always can first, but then Lucy would splurge the remaining $ on herself "before" paying any bills.

Poor things. Even with all the inflation and converted prices...housewives didn't have much to show of status except hats, accessories, stoles, dresses and jewelry. Now a days women are more into bags, makeup, wigs, nails, shoes and glam squads which cost much more than $50 of their day or $500+ of our day. If they weren't buying house appliances this is all they really had lol. At least to show out in public. I think husbands are more understanding of that now a days because they want they're wives to look and feel good. My husband is more accepting of an over expenditure on clothing/apparel than he is house stuff/decor. Lol. I love Lucy
I'm not into ANY of those things. Tennis shoes, jeans and a t- shirt, very little make up and just clean nails. Don't even know what a glam squad is. There are other more important things in life. I spend too much on books maybe, that's all.
