His absence is explained by the idea that he lost his job at the bank and wanted to get back to what he originally wanted to do was work in nature. So he left to become a park ranger.
Steve Rhoades was Marcy's first husband. He got fired at the bank and ended up unemployed for a long time, hanging out with Peg alot. He hit rock bottom when he stole the old turtle from the local zoo and tried to release it into Lake Michigan. Steve didn't know the turtle was a sea-turtle and everytime it tried to get out of the lake, Steve threw it back in singing 'Born Free'. He ended up getting freed on bail and ran off to be a park ranger at Yosemite National Park. He appeared a couple times after that but only in guest spots. Marcy woke up with a hangover one morning and found herself married to Jefferson Darcy, becoming Marcy Darcy
Married with Children received very high ratings among the African American community back when it played live. People actually connected to this common man who had common problems and the show did not represent some sort of idealised family like the Brady Bunch or Family Ties or such but more resembled a show like Sanford And Son. By the way Sanford and Son, Married with Children, Beavis and Butthead and MST3K are the best American comedy by far.

You'll notice they often had the actress in very baggy, bulky clothes to make her look a lot skinnier and in the first season, she dressed a lot more feminine, they butched her up quite a bit after a few seasons. Anyhow, another series you might like is "Red Dwarf". Picture 2 guys who hate each others' guts, stranded on a large spaceship, millions of miles in the middle of deep space, alone. Good stuff.

I swear I always thought she left his ass like 6 episodes before he apparently leaves her. I must have missed like half a season somewhere. Because I swear after Steve Screws around at the Zoo instead of looking for a job then goes to either jail or prison for Stealing the turtle from the zoo and throwing it repeatedly back into the sea even though it was a fresh water turtle killing it. When Marcy and Al hear the news report Al asks if she is getting him out of jail and I thought she said something along the lines of let him rot.
They ran for 11 seasons they were the first show on for Fox they didn't have a good ending it was shity I didn't like it but yeah the show was golden when it comes to Dad's Al was the reason why I put Al Bundy and and Tim Allen from home improvement so high on the list they can relate these are actual dad's that we have on a a daily base third would be Uncle Phil 4 bill
