In this video I will be upgrading the airflow in my Gatortail 35GTR. Carb, intake and exhaust should help it open up a bit at the top end. We will see!!!
Excellent video for a mechanically stupid individual like myself. The only thing, which I could be wrong is the bps handle thing you said would face backwards. I believe (at least that is how we have always used the stock ones) are a grab bar of sorts like the pro drive bar but smaller when running the tiller left and right fast trying to get moving in super nasty shallow situations. Granted the newer ones like yours typically don't have much issue getting up and going but on my old 35 I've had to use that a good bit. Then again my boat is a damn barge and underpowered and heavy and it is location dependent. Correct me if I am wrong though, either way thanks for the in depth video brother.
I really wanted a backup light and I figured the best way was to mount it to the motor so which ever way I’m backing up the light is shining. It’s just a Walmart special wired into the front switches. Worked really well. Going to put one on my new boat when it arrives too even though it have back lights.
@@Craft518 Man, I love that idea. I just mounted two to the trailer right under the bunks facing rearward and wired them to my reverse lights. It's working well for backing down the ramp but I'm worried about how long they'll actually last going in and out of the water.
Good question. The motor will come with an 1/2” aluminum plate that the motor screws press against. I had to cut the center of that out and use the two pieces like washers. Ultimately no modification to the motor or boat short of drilling two holes for the standard motor bolts to go through the transom.
I’m not sure if it is needed or not for you application. Sorry man I wish I could help but I am now into EFI Mudbuddy 5000 so no more carb work for me.
Stupid question but where is the cdi box located if you have a cdi motor? About to do the swap on mine. I feel stupid because I don't if its cdi or non cdi
I’ve never actually looked for the box. I know the coils are left and right of the motor but really haven’t searched. I only have had the CDI models of both the Gatortail and now the mud buddy
The hole shot and responsiveness maximized. The carrying capacity really doesn’t change but the speeds have increased. I’ve gotten 5-7MPH better with two guys and gear and the same with three and gear. The speed to get on plane is exactly what I needed, I’m happy. I think if I wanted more torque I would get the heads done but I will see over the winter.
Always depends on weight. Max empty 30 MPH. Loaded 3 people, guns and bags, blind, 40/50 decoys, hull full of water, kayak full of water and 18 dead birds, 15MPH. Typical speed after mods was 25-29MPH.
I’ve since sold the boat and motor in this video. I would have gone GTR40XD if I had to do it again. That said I’ve gone with a prodigy 1854 and a mud buddy 50 this year.
@@Craft518 lol yeah that has roller rockers. I wish my prodrive was faster but honestly the fpr can’t be matched by gtr or mud buddy for reverse in the slop
Wish I could but I sold the boat and motor and have upgraded to a Prodigy custom boat and switched to a mud buddy 5000. I’ll have vids of that when it’s done being built and when we get out for testing
@@kirkbourgeois2560 a few reasons. The 5000 upgrade gets 50HP and I need more power for the 1854 Prodigy, the open throttle cable is easier to change in cold weather when it really counts, two electric trim switches is a huge selling point. They are the same vanguard motor so the lower units are really a toss up who’s is better. Plenty of people around hear have MB and I was the only GT. Equally as good IMO so I like the features better on MB.
I’m not sure the size but whatever came in the minuki 42MM from BWP. They installed the corrected jets for the stainless exhaust I planned on running. Sorry.
Speed is not the issue as they all will run 29-31mph in my experience. Even my Mud Buddy 50 is around there on an 18 foot prodigy. It’s about carrying capacity.
GTR was good and everyone has their opinion but save the money and get a Mudbuddy 50. The power and pickup is infinitely better after trying both. The GTR is bulkier and harder to work on handle issues that will come up. Just my opinion of course
It’s 35 hp to start you MIGHT get 37 to 38 with upgrades. Horsepower gloss is a lot of money and you don’t get much for what you pay for. ultimately it’s about response time and pick up to get on a plane.
I ran a tracker with mud buddy set up for years and never had a problem.
Great content brotha!!!
Doing what I can hahaha

Great vid, man. Thanks. Tell me more about that light you have mounted to the motor if you get a min. Thanks!

Whered you get the intake, carb, and exhaust from? Was it a whole package or had to order seperate
Backwater Performance has lots for all types of Vanguard motor options.
Did you have to do any modifications to get that motor to fit with the support brace in the back?

if they made the top look better I think more people would buy that upgrade. Everything on the top just looks too exposed to the elements to me.
Know this is a long shot. But I’m swapping the stock carb for a 35 that doesn’t come with electrical connection for the solenoid…is it needed?
I’m not sure if it is needed or not for you application. Sorry man I wish I could help but I am now into EFI Mudbuddy 5000 so no more carb work for me.
Any idea on how much power it added? And you said 5 mph gain?
Got about that amount with everything added.

Can use the salt water?
I wouldn’t personally but I know people use these and the mud buddies in salt water. Probably just keep it clean and you’ll be fine.
Can you do a video in the marsh with reverse
