ITV SCHOOLS - HISTORY AROUND YOU: Hunting For Clues (Everton)

- We're off to Everton by the Mersey with Allan Waplington! Starting with Everton V Burnley at Goodison Park, then a look around the village and even a look at how Everton Toffee is made! This was an excellent schools series and even though it was made in the 1970's, it was repeated well into the late 1980's when ITV Schools moved to Channel 4. Continuity here is a clip of a Victorian Slide from Summer 1982, but I'm not sure if this recording comes from that term as the video was recorded over many times. The slide just happened to be right at the start of the tape. From my own collection of video tapes. Uploaded for educational purposes.
Brilliant programme. So informative, more of this type of programme should be made now.
I remember this one as a kid when we'd get to watch the TV on wheels that teacher would wheel out. Black and White, of course.
been looking for this for ages . . he went all around the north west . would love to see more . brought back my childhood
i live 100 yards from the towerand remember it like this, the building infront of the 1st post box is my dads old school, this is back in the 70s as our new estate was not built. and the cars driving past lol.
Allan Waplington was our history teacher at Kingswood Senior School in Southport. Absolute legend, a fantastic teacher and a lovely man (and judging by these vids a bit of an Ernest Hemingway-style hunk in his day as well!). RIP.
I think about this programme every few years.
I've just found out what it's called, Thanks.

One of my favourite programmes as a kid
The Everton - Burnley game was October 20 1973.
The programme captures Dave Clement scoring from the penalty spot, for a 1-0 win for the Blues.
So filming was late1973 and, I guess, broadcast 1974.
I remember this with fondness! If I remember right, it was the last programme in the schools line-up of a morning, going on at 11:39...giving you time to file down to dinner. As for this FASCINATING programme, this is from the 1970s. The clue is the bus at just after 0:11:17.230
Narrowing the date further, Granada only started putting the date on their endcaps in 1975, so this must be earlier than that. The latest car model I can spot is a Morris Marina, which was launched in 1971, so it must have been after that.
Everton hosted Burnley just once during this period - 20 October 1973 (which Everton won 1-0, for what it's worth). So we're talking either late 1973 or 1974.
Correct - the 74/75 game in April was under the lights , played on the Friday night to avoid a clash with the Grand National .We drew 1-1 Peter Noble scored for us with Bob Latchford scoring for Everton
As regards their copyright dates, Granada switched from using Arabic numerals to Roman ones from 1977/78 - I think; from 1979/80, they tagged the date onto the end credits, rather than stick it on the end board.
@@RobertTheDodger654 Granada had the numbers early on 1975 but switched to roman numerals later that same year
This is definitely from the 1970s - can tell by the chaps' haircuts, or should I say, hairstyles.
The Music used during the "Toffee Making" is here. . . .

Ha ! Today it would be somebody throwing crack wraps into the crowd !
Crack wraps? Some kind of incontinence product?
Mr. Waplington puts on his finest Rodney Bewes/John Noakes patronising voice yet again and seems to think that he is addressing five year-olds.
Everton v Burnley
Hope Burnley won
Up the Clarets 🏐😀
Sorry Ian, the Clarets got beat 1-0, Dave Clements penalty securing a victory for Everton. I was aged 9,and was at the match, and I'm on the video.
I had an ongoing affair with the toffee lady … she always let me have a bit extra, especially in extra time. 👩🏻🦱
