Ok. Listened to it twice. Had to. First time was through my phone's speaker. Second time with headphones. I don't think I heard the original version so I can't compare. The song itself is decent. You've definitely nailed that Ozzy Sabbath sound. Love the solo. Simple and to the point. My favorite part is the tone of the solo guitar. Listening with headphones did highlight one thing that personally I'm not sure I would've done. With sparse instrumentation combined with having the rhythm guitars hard panned left and right, the soundscape sounded a little empty. Obviously, it's all a matter of taste. I'd be curious how it'd sound with the rhythm guitars brought in to about the 35-50% range. Anyway, looking forward to hearing more!
Thanks! I can always count on you to give a no bullshit honest feedback.. lol.. Yeah, I should have filled it with more rhythm guitars.. a post thought. I think the thing is since there aren't too many chords being played, there's nothing to fill up the space. Yeah the hard pan L to R is standard. I agree, the mix might have benefitted if brought in closer. Using the Laney for rhythm was even worse because it only filled up the top portion without full depth. For the solo, I used this plugin that is called a space modulator. It gave it that other worldly sound. It's basically a doubled chorus that can be controlled. For the most part, it was just a test to see if you can actually get digital drums to sit in with a mix and work in a complete song. I feel the hardest thing is to capture the guitar. The bass is almost always (in my experience) going straight in, unless you have a top of the line sound engineer who can process the bass sound. I just went straight in with the bass through an interface and it was more controllable. Thanks for your feedback! Much appreciated!
