Cats are curious little creatures. Mine used to cry to explore outside (i live in a apartment). One day I opened the door, just to see what she would do, she walked outside (to de corridor) very confident like a lion, then someone opened a door of another apartment, she ran inside and never tried to leave again. And i tried to leash train her, but she just hate strangers so much, she chose to be an inside cat herself. Someday I want to live in a house, so a catio sounds fun
Nope, she just got scared. If you lived in a house and had a secure back garden - and she felt safe, she would be out. Cat's are hunters, they love to prowel - they LOVE being outside. You are deluding yourself if you think otherwise.
@@megmucklebones7538 And then there are cats which just don't want to go outside or can't because of the living situation. And you are deluding yourself if you don't consider this too....
@@megmucklebones7538 It is absolutely true that cats live longer indoors. Mine will walk in an H-Harness and he travels with me on my boat for months. He has a life vest that automatically inflates if it hits the water with a distress beacon / finder. this also doubles as a harness which he and I both use to tether ourselves to the boat. He loves the boat, sunning himself, attacking some fish I catch etc.. We play all the time. I will say this. If your cat is not allowed to go out and about then he needs room inside and a few hours play time a day. Which involves hunting games. I never leave my cat home alone for longer than 4 hours and that is rare.
Wonderful!! The only thing I'm concerned about is if the catio is actually secured to the house - because if it's not, it can move, by another animal, the cats themselves, whatever - and the cats can get out the window and actually out of the house - between the catio and the house. So, if you don't want to poke holes in your siding, at least put a couple, heavy cinder blocks or something in front of the catio, to hold it up against the house. Catios are wonderful for indoor cats to safely enjoy being outside! 🙌🏽. ❤
Great job! A few years ago I moved to a property which I discovered was a dumping area for kittens, puppies, dogs. I've taken in many and found homes for a few. I currently have 10 rescued cats and have slowly made catios of various sizes (some very small) from all my windows. they love following the sun throughout the day lounging around from one catio to the next and have space from each other when they want it. My big catios have night solar lamps so they can "hunt" insects. Our older 'feral' rescues were allowed outside freely until injuries, parasites and cold weather took its toll. Now they are happy to be indoor kitties. I leash walk one of these old guys and he directs me back to the big catio door when he's finished his walk. I like catios, they are safe. I've not always been able to save abandoned kittens or young mama cats from dog attacks or bad people who intentionally try to kill the "bird killers". But with my catios, I can keep the cats entertained, safe and separate from the dogs I rescue who are not always cat friendly. Some of my catios were made from scraps and others were purpose built - they really can be made to suit every budget and situation (even rental houses). They give so much pleasure, and visitors think it's hilarious when we sit on the porch next to a catio and have several cats spying on us while we enjoy a coffee or BBQ!
The orange one is adorable. Thank you for building the catio. Cats NEED the outside and can be safe with a catio and enjoy the outside world at the same time. I have 2 - 24 year old cats and feed another 4 who have no homes for the last 13 years. I hope to have my own place next year and all the cats will go with me and they will get a catio where they can smell the air, enjoy the sun, play and nap and be safe and happy.
Very nice, big beautiful yard. Maybe they can get an upgrade to a bigger, multi level catio in that big space. Very sweet kitties and sweet of you to help them and your Mom.
Awesome. Good work! Hip tip, I’d add at least one more high perch. Cats like to be up on high, on shelves or something they can sleep safely on, and to survey their surroundings. Preferably ones that are carpeted or have a soft towel or blanket. I am sure your kitties appreciate your work! Cheers.

Great you built this for them. If we did not have a balcony (where black cat Rudy spends more time than I do), I would do the same. So sweet to see them lounging around, completely secure and happy.
Great job on the Catio but it looks a little small for two cats. Why not buy a second (the same identical model) then with a little ingenuity add on to the existing catio to double the size and it will look good? Too bad its not taller but with a little effort you could also customize it and maybe add cat tree (with perches) and you can also add a litter box and some cameras to keep an eye on them.
I build this with a few changes. I doubled the size, added more stronger and larger shelves. I also made a door for humans and not hobbits. I pitched the roof and covered it with a plastic/fiberglass sheets. Added a dog door and a tunnel for egress. Next,…lights 😂
I remember learning about Catio's when I was watching videos all day during Pandemic. I think one thing is missing. On the right side, install a 2x4 across the side as a support brace, then put across a plank along the top-connecting it to the shelf so they can walk back and forth. Perhaps a shelf on right side near top as well. Catio I saw had a plank across top-as well as some stair plank to go to bottom so they don't have to jump down. The Catio I saw being built was much more elaborate and sophisticated, but did have a plank across the top since critters do like climbing things. Edited to add: I hope you can attach the framework to the house (?maybe to the window frame) so the cats don’t push it away from the window and escape. A few hooks and eyes will secure it and they are easy to remove if needed later.

Great catio. I moved to a new home and decided to just add a screen porch. My cat lives out there! I too get to enjoy the outdoors. Added an outside cat door on the porch but won't let her out due to some strays hangin out. She is 18, going deaf so don't think she feels safe leaving the screened porch. I also added for her the opportunity to access the screened porch through a window with locks on it. I hung up bird feeders but she loves the fresh air, mostly sunshine. Kudos for providing some extras for your cats to explore. They will learn the smells and the sounds soon!
First thing I did when I bought my house was build a huge one the size of my entire back patio (minus a little space for me to walk out the back door). The cats love it. A few of them spend the entire day out there. I had some help though. You did a great thing.
❤️🩷 THIS is insanely adorable 🤩 it's wonderful that you guys had enough patience to let them explore on thier own terms! Living in a condo, I can't have a catio or outdoor cats, but i can tell you ALL three of mine have an entire room devoted to towers, wall stairs and hammocks 😮😂😂❤❤
If you was looking for ideas, I feel like the bit where it’s green on the wall could be turned into a climbing wall and have carpet or something similar material wise which they could grip and climb up/ down. But I think it looks super cute 🫶
With such a nice backyard, you should consider making a “cat corral”. Depending on if you have fenced it off already, you could add overhang netting to the existing fence structure or build a larger enclosure on the grass and a walk-way/tunnel from the existing catio to it. Cats love feeling real grass under their paws. My 4 kitties have a large backyard with 6ft fences and netting on top to avoid them jumping out or other critters coming in.
you could make it bigger with more climbing shelves and scratching posts. i mean the fake grass could be a plank of wood with the stick on scratchy carpet that u can cheaply on Temu. but so good to see kitties enjoying it
I sincerely hope you secured the catio to the house to avoid any accidental feline escapes or home intrusions by unwanted humans or wildlife. Otherwise, good on you for providing them with such a nice, safe area to enjoy the outside world!
I just realized...Isn't it a horrible idea to have both platforms And the cat box all on the same side? They're the same size, so how are they meant to even Enter the box? And if they try to get to the food, how are they meant to eat it on that tiny platform, not to mention the insane risk of knocking it all over cause of how tiny it is.
Pretty good, but I do have to pass along a word of caution because I don't want to see your cats hurt. I've built a lot of catios and other related cat furniture for about 10 years now. Some of my "cat furniture" went to lions, jaguars, tigers, bobcats, servals, mountain lions and for some reason, bears. ( Bears.... Don't get me started. ) When you build a catio the biggest mistake most people make is they're thinking "keep my cat in" not "keep aggressive wildlife out." My own catios at home have endured some aggressive smash attempts by a pack of coyotes. I enjoyed playing the footage back to see how disappointed they were that they couldn't make a dent in it. I hope you got the lock situation for the door figured out but I'm worried that the entire catio can easily be tilted away from the house or fall over. Sometimes an aggressive jump by your cat can be enough to scoot it far enough away from the wall that they can escape. Cats only need a 3" opening ( wide enough for their skull ) to completely disappear. I'd like to think you know this already and have probably secured it in ways we did not see on camera. If not, securing it is all the difference between "years of cool catio videos" and that horrible "Help, I lost my cat video" that tears the hearts out of everyone watching.
Our cats love having a catio. It greatly enriches their lives wills keeping them safe and keeping birds and other small animals safe from the cats. Ours line up to out when we open the kitty door.
I would build a catio from scratch with a focus on security and comfort. First up, I'd make sure that it didn't reduce security to the property (i.e. thief comes along, pulls on catio and climbs straight in the window. Second, it would have square cage like you have, but it would have stripping so no sharp bits for the cat to get caught on. I would then put fly screen on the outside (again with stripping) so as to keep small snakes, bugs / flies / mosquitos out. This would allow the window to be left open to still allow the breeze in / cat to enter / exit at will. I would also have a perch in there for the cat to sit on (high up) as cats like to monitor from high locations. Mine certainly does. He sits on top of the 6 ft high custom cat tree I built for him. Of course , doing it this way requires you to own the house as you can't make structural changes to a rental. Ps My cat is an indoor cat. He has escaped a few times . Last major escape cost me hundreds in vet bills and a week off work nursing him back to health.
Maybe so that your cat doesn't feel desperate to try to escape, you can take your cat outside in a harness on a leash a few times a week. I do that with my cats. I have a rope attached to the support on my porch (not enclosed), and another rope attached to that one so I can let two cats out at a time. Both ropes have hooks at each end so I can attach the cat harnesses (upside down so that the rope goes underneath them, not pulling on their backs). My cats like to go outside to get some fresh air, sniff everything (plants I have growing outside, etc.) and eat some cat grass I have growing outside in a container. I keep an eye on them because my fenced front yard is close to the city sidewalk, and I don't want people or other animals bothering my cats. I also keep an eye on them because I don't want a cat getting stuck on something outside in the sun and getting too hot. One of my cats likes to go outside, maybe eat a little grass, then just lie down underneath one of our bushes for a while (maybe 1/2 hour) where she's pretty much hidden, and then she wants to come back inside.
Wonderful job. Glad you added the lock! I wish they would make them larger so the cats could actually run and play on the grass...maybe even have a fake tree to climb. Those small ones give them fresh air, but no exercise.
My cat catches salamanders and snakes. She's both indoor and outdoor. She stays within my yard as do the neighbors cats too. Cats are outdoor animals being that way for thousands of years with them easily able to adjust to inside life.
1:52 An indoor cat has a much longer lifespan (10-15 years on average) than an outdoor cat (2-5 years). And it's not just the fact that cats are prey animals for coyotes and large birds, feral cats can also spread horrible diseases. As natural as allowing cats outside can seem, cats are invasive species in most communities and can devastate local bird populations. Sometimes the "indoor only life is sad" is projection on the part of us humans (we are VERY good at it), a content cat will cause no trouble at all, while a stressed or bored cat will. Some cats, like hybrid breeds, can benefit greatly from controlled outdoor activity. Some cats are simply too "high energy" for staying exclusively indoors, sometimes the indoor space is too small for a cat to explore without getting bored. That's where some outdoor time is appropriate to get their Cat TV fix, like exploring on a harness or a catio. But letting them go in and out of doors unsupervised is asking for trouble.
I live in a top floor apartment and my two older cats love hanging out on the balcony. My youngest cat wants to go out but I’ll have to ease her into it. She’d definitely love to have that setup.
It really depends on the cat as far as the argument goes indoor/outdoor. My cat is not a fan of the outside. He's curious, but as soon as he gets outside, he's like, "I don't like this." Unless I'm outside with him, I can leave doors open, and he'll sit at the open door and look outside. He likes the smells and sights, but also like knowing he's safe. So, it's kind of a dumb argument on whether cats should be outdoor or indoor cats. Some may very well be happier with outdoor access, but they're going to face more danger if they wander too far. Others may be completely fine, only being an indoor cat where they always feel safe. If people have cats that want to explore the outdoors a bit, then a catio or harness training is the way to go, in my opinion. Your cat will be safe, but get to enjoy the outdoors. To anyone that says their cat refuses to wear a harness, it just takes persistence to train them. Might require trying multiple harnesses, but it's absolutely possible. Cat training is always a bit of a negotiation compared to dogs... unless you own a husky.
It is beautiful how can you not like a carrier? Just FYI for me I would’ve brought it out all the way to the end of the concrete. There’s some even go over there sliding doors, but I figured your mom would like to sit outside with the cats in real place to do that inside the fenced area and at little more shoveling so we have an easier way of getting up and down but that’s just me otherwise it’s quite beautiful.
You also need 2 shelves in there so they can sit or lie down and look at the world. The one cat kept trying to climb but there was NO shelf for him to climb on. I have had 27 cats in 47 years and love cats.
I also agree that there is too much stuff in that catio that keeps the cats from just lying down and snoozing, which is what they love to do best. There should be at least one place for each cat to lie down and snooze and stretch.
@@sharonroconnellandcritters I have had cat/s since I was 13 and I am still learning what works best for my cats. I have never gone to a shelter to get a cat (I would never buy one); they have always come to me, from people giving me cats or cats coming to my yard and wanting food.
Didn't really see how they would get into the "cave", but very nice! Only think I miss, which I use in my cat catio and yeah everywhere, is those ropes you spin around just any pole for them to climb on. I guess you could fit that onto there.
I think it needs more platforms where both of them can sit and be on the lookout😊

Love how he brrrs all the time, just like my cat. So cute ❤
You did a good job! Give yourself a pat on the back👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
You have a heart of gold.
Like mother like daughter. So cool.😊
the little fish sign that you put up there is from my hometown in Switzerland
Love it, you rock~!!!! This is awesome......for a first time catio it's lovely.
Nice work and your cats are sooooo lovely....😊
Thank you for making them happier!
THAT MAKES ME SO ANXIOUS ADD A LATCH FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!!
Carl and Sersei are good happy kitties!
with such a beautiful backyard should have properly fenced off a large area allowing the cats to run around & hunts
Cute kitties!!!
It was very thoughtful of you to do this for the cats! I suspect cats may be magical beings 😊.
If you was looking for ideas, I feel like the bit where it’s green on the wall could be turned into a climbing wall and have carpet or something similar material wise which they could grip and climb up/ down. But I think it looks super cute 🫶
when Cersei responds is so cute
She’s such a timid girl haha
Carl's chirping is adorable
I keep two indoor cats. they greatly enjoy the shelves and high up bed platforms I have built for them.
Great job.. those cats look happy!
1:30 Eek! Evan And Katelyn! 😁
you could make it bigger with more climbing shelves and scratching posts. i mean the fake grass could be a plank of wood with the stick on scratchy carpet that u can cheaply on Temu. but so good to see kitties enjoying it
The love and kindness in these comments is inspiring. Thank you!
I sincerely hope you secured the catio to the house to avoid any accidental feline escapes or home intrusions by unwanted humans or wildlife. Otherwise, good on you for providing them with such a nice, safe area to enjoy the outside world!
Wonderful!! I really appreciate these videos
I just realized...Isn't it a horrible idea to have both platforms And the cat box all on the same side? They're the same size, so how are they meant to even Enter the box? And if they try to get to the food, how are they meant to eat it on that tiny platform, not to mention the insane risk of knocking it all over cause of how tiny it is.
your overthinking it-
@@wooferspaws No, not really.
Yeah, like how do they get down to eat it? They will knock it over
I think the whole idea & concept is awesome and if the cats love it that’s all that matters.
You are so good to your Mom's cats!
So cute 🐱😍
I have three cats and they have the liberty to go outside our backyard. They all come back home anytime they wanted.
you must not have any natural predators in the area like hawks or coyotes?
I'm in love with Carl!!! 😻
Beautiful cats
Thank you!
You are the best Big Sister ever!
SO CUTE!! “Getting a little more orange” 😂😂
Wonderful job. Glad you added the lock!
I wish they would make them larger so the cats could actually run and play on the grass...maybe even have a fake tree to climb. Those small ones give them fresh air, but no exercise.
that is good for your lovely orange cats.❤❤❤
The Catio Looks GREAT ! Brooke, You Get an A + For Effort And Fur Baby Love
Awesome! Well done, buddy. 🐈🐈🐈
Thanks! 😺
Your sweet Brooke......I love cats😊❤
Thank you for not leaving us hanging. I remember checking out your first short and being bummed there wasn't any updates
My cat catches salamanders and snakes. She's both indoor and outdoor. She stays within my yard as do the neighbors cats too. Cats are outdoor animals being that way for thousands of years with them easily able to adjust to inside life.
I noticed the big orange cat was reading the daily news. Sniffing all those scents in the outdoor air.
Hahaha
I JUST GOT A KITTEN! 🐈⬛
I was not prepared for what's written on the artwork with the fish XD Hilarious
Ngl i've only seen Half Asleep Chris making a Catio, havent seen anyone else
Omg that was so sweet to do for them ❤
1:52 An indoor cat has a much longer lifespan (10-15 years on average) than an outdoor cat (2-5 years).
Their little dialogue was so cute hehe
Adorable. Cats are cute too😊
You also need 2 shelves in there so they can sit or lie down and look at the world. The one cat kept trying to climb but there was NO shelf for him to climb on.
I have had 27 cats in 47 years and love cats.
This is great input 👍 thank you!!
Thank you for loving kitties! I too have had them my whole life, and you can never stop learning how to help them
I also agree that there is too much stuff in that catio that keeps the cats from just lying down and snoozing, which is what they love to do best.
I had that same shirt in high school, back before you were born . Well done
Didn't really see how they would get into the "cave", but very nice! Only think I miss, which I use in my cat catio and yeah everywhere, is those ropes you spin around just any pole for them to climb on. I guess you could fit that onto there.
Super cute video! Thanks!
Joy Division t-shirt- awesome!
The same happen to my kitten I got in January 2024. She went exploring and didn’t come back😅
