    Thanks for watching everyone! Be sure to help out my channel by giving this video a like! More people will see and learn about 2% cards if you do!
    Additionally, all three of these 2% cards have had limited time or targeted SUBs in the past. If you see them or use them, then great! But I think most average people who go for these cards take the public offers advertised and those don't include SUBs. People just have to be aware what they are giving up!

    It's videos like these that earned my sub a few months back. You have a habit of forcing viewers to look at CC's from a different angle, looking past the marketing hype getting into how the math ACTUALLY works. Keep up the great content.

    You could frame this as "ongoing earnings take a long time to catch up with bonuses" in general. It all comes down to willingness to juggle accounts, amount being spent, and ability to get approved. Even the elusive 3% cash back cards aren't enough to offset someone willing and able to change cards every month.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому +1

      Hey David! I agree, this is why SUBs matter so much. I just wanted to show the math and you correctly pointed out that even a 3% card would take a long time to overtake a good SUB on a lower percent card. If people feel like jumping from card to card every 3 months... they realistically could do this forever and would be better off financially. Cheers!

    Great video Jake! Another option is to have both a 2% card and a 1.5% card. I have the Citi double cash and the BofA travel rewards card. I use the BofA card for foreign online purchases, thus getting more than the default 1% in that category. It sounds like the PayPal Mastercard would have been better in this respect but I like being able convert cash to Citi Thank You Points. I guess there are always tradeoffs.

    Thank you for the comparison sir! I have the Citi Dbl Cash, and also the QS with Cap One, and the Freedom Unlimited. I believe that Citi although is a keeper card for me, using the point system as a carrot on a string. I do not like the min redemption limit vs Cap One which will let you redeem a nickle if you want. I use the Dbl Cash for bill pay and get a free water bill about every 6-7 months basically with the redemption of cash back.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Elliot! The DoubleCash is still a keeper card forever for me! I don't see Citi every changing the benefits (because of the name), but I could see them some day maybe taking the card off the market and no longer making it publicly available. We'll see!

    Very interesting to see the math here, and the value of chasing sign up bonuses. Personally I'm focusing on getting cards that will give me good long term value as opposed to sign up bonuses, but once I get those then I'd shift to putting my spending on those that would give me a good sign up bonus instead of just putting spend on a 2% card.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому

      In the long run, I think everyone still needs a 2% card! These cards have all offered SUBs in the past, so you just have to look out for them and not discount the value they bring. Cheers!

    I've had the PayPal MC for about a year. Like you mentioned, it's much easier to be approved for. In my opinion, the ONLY somewhat "not great" part about this card is their antiquated app experience through the PayPal app. I actually go out of my way to make my payments via desktop because I dislike the app experience so much. Other than that, nothing but good things to say!

    • @JakeBroe

    • @diestelmeic
      @diestelmeic 3 роки тому +3

      You're absolutely correct. What Jake should say is never apply for the Citi Double Cash as a new account if you have good credit and other options with Citi. I applied for the Citi Prestige last year for a 60K signup bonus and was also able to utilize the $250 travel credit for 2019 and 2020 to completely offset the $495 annual fee. Then I downgraded to the Double Cash before the next annual fee was due. Granted, not everyone will be able or willing to apply for a card with a high annual fee, but it would be funny if Jake W. made a response video and crunched the numbers.....60K Thank You points destroys any signup bonus you would ever get from all of those previously mentioned cards. Question for Mr. Broe, if you don't mind sharing, did you obtain your Double Cash via a new application or product change? Regardless, I enjoyed the video.

    This is interesting--I did not know the break-even point would be that high between the two.
    If we consider excluding all the category spend, I don't think the non-category spend can reach that level per year, making the break-even point even harder to reach

    • @JakeBroe

    Nice take, I figure the other thing folks can keep in mind, is if you're in this game to use multiple cards earning 3-5+% then the amount of spend on the flat rate card would need an even longer break even. Spending just 25% of one's annual credit card spending on 5% cashback cards while earning a measly 1% on everything else alone, would break even with a 2% card. Earn 1.5%, or more than 5 %, things get even more interesting. 👍

      Moneyface Mainly has to do with differences of opinion on Amex vs Chase. I don’t think Amex’s travel credits are as hard to use as he and others say they are. It takes a bit of research, but I’m still getting 100% true value out of mine even this year. Plus, I don’t find Chase cards being more valuable than Amex cards or even a cash back setup, especially if you’re high net worth.

      Thanks for the comment Royce! I agree about AmEx's points being more valuable if you have good transfer partners to use them with. I just might be a tad salty being stuck in North Dakota right now because of the military (and not being able to travel), so I put more emphasis on cash back cards. Still lots of great value out there for those who put in a little bit of effort and care. Cheers!

    Great analysis. Most people don't think this way. My solution is to have the Citi Double Cash (since I do think this is going to be a decade and beyond) card & get sign up bonuses on other cards along the way. Hit the minimum spend and then bounce back to the Double Cash. And let's face it, as long as a person isn't being dumb and paying interest on credit cards, if we take advantage of the perks in some form or fashion we are getting ahead.

    If you want the CIti Double card get the Citi Rewards card first, that one has a sign up bonus and then product change. In some cases with the Citi Rewards you are getting very close to 2x back as well because it has the round up feature to the nearest 10th. plus the redeemption of 10% points back when you redeem. And effectively 2x back on gas and supermarkets

This is only temporary though because technically using a personal card for business purposes could pierce the corporate veil during lawsuits even if the personal card only is used for business. Also I make sure that my total utilization is not too high . Lol I don’t need any automatic credit limit decreases from a low credit score.

    Hey Jake, I was wondering what your response would be if we added another 2% card in the mix but one with annual fee, the card I'm picking is the Capital One Venture. • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому

      Hey dude, looks like the sign up bonus for that card is either $1,000 (for $20K in spend) or $500 (for $3K in spend). I don't like the $95 annual fee, so if your plan is to open the card and then cancel it after a year, then you can get great value from sign up bonus. But if you open this card and hold it for over 10 years (which is what they want), then you will lose money in the long run.

  • @user-li5qd1lz6w
    @user-li5qd1lz6w 3 роки тому +13

    All your spend should hit the minimum spending requirement for sign-on bonus on new cards. Open a card, hit minimum spending, then open your next card, rinse and repeat until you have no card to open. Then comparing cash back card starts to make sense.

    I thought you were going to touch on the best strategy at the end but I think it was still unclear. The best strategy is get the 2% cash back card as a base credit card then cycle through the sign up bonus cards, using them only until the sign up bonus spending is met, then moving back to the 2% cash back card once you’ve secured the sign up bonus. (Obviously only spending on things you would be spending on anyways and not spending just to get the bonus). This way you get the good return on your spend from the sign up bonus then you also get the better 2% return when you move back to the 2% cash back card

    • @JakeBroe

    Thank you! I've been telling people who want to get into credit cards that 1.5% cards tend to be superior unless you're a very large spender or value simplicity over maximum rewards and will likely just use a 1 card set up for years and years.
