Team travel all the way for me right now. Although it takes a bit more work to get the maximum value from your points, I like the game behind it. I do envy the simplicity of cash-back setups at times, mainly because you can get cards with any lender without pledging loyalty, as you mentioned. A bit of both can be a good thing though!

    Team cashback for me.
My idea of a vacation is to load up my truck and drive to a wilderness area, then hike in a day or so, or at least until I have no cell service and see no signs of people, then spend a week or more in the bliss of not having to be in the proximity of other humans.
Not much in the way of travel cards for that!

I hear you. Most of my travel involves driving somewhere. When I get there, I'm usually sleeping in a tent. I don't stay in hotels/motels all that often and haven't been on an airplane in several years. So I'm mostly team cashback. . . .
But, there are a few places I'd like to fly to that I just haven't gotten around to yet, so I'm dabbling in travel rewards and saving up some points on that side too.

I’m the same as you but I like to go out of state at least once a year to backpack and explore new parks/wilderness areas around the country. The travel cards help me with flights and car rentals for these trips
That said, the rest of my outdoors time is spent within driving distance so I do use a mix of cash back cards too

I love cash back. I look at it as a back up in case I need cash. When my daughter was young, her b-day was November and Christmas was the next month. I let the balance build up all year and used the money for those two expenses. It kept me on a budget of spending, depending on how much I built up, and I never spent a penny of my own money. Later on if I had to pay taxes, I used it for that.

Thanks, proudmoney! Lots of great points in here for people on the fence like me 😆 I'd like to try the travel points some day eventually but for now cashback and a few extra little perks works for me. They just need to give us cashback people more/higher rewards and perks so we can feel special too! 😉

There was a study done on cash back versus travel credit cards. Not surprisingly, it found that most people on average spend about ~ $2,100 a year on travel according the the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Given this, it found that a majority of people would be better off using a cash back card. They also stated that you would typically need to spend ~$8,300 per year to make a travel card worth it. This of course depends on the card and your particular spending levels. Travel hacking (opening cards to get the reward bonuses) aside, most people just need a good cash back setup or possibly a hybrid approach.

Glad you mentioned the "where you live" and "flexibility" aspects. I live in the center of the US and I tend to be an event-based traveler. I travel for sporting events, concerts, holidays, family events, etc. Which means my travel isn't usually very flexible and I am rarely physically near the good deals. I've tried for many years to get good value out of travel points and usually failed. As such, I prefer cash back or points I know I can get at least 1cpp minimum like Capital One or Chase. I really struggle to get any value out of Amex points in particular.

I’m more conflicted about this because I have the cash back cards but often times, they don’t stack up when redeeming them in comparison to travel rewards.
The other side of this, the major travel cards accumulate at a slower rate only if you don’t travel as much.
I often wish there was an in-between card where I don’t need to go to a “specific” portal or only get value by select partner redemption 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m overseas 50 weeks out of the year, and I’ll end this calendar year with 31 segments flown, so I’m all Team Travel. Some of those points this year turned into a Hyatt free night in both Hawaii and Guam, and very reduced prices on round trip business class tickets on several 14 hr trans-Atlantic flights by paying half-cash/half-points.

I run a hybrid system though I’m leaning more into the travel side now as I’m planning to start taking trips next year and I love the idea of using points to cover airfare and hotel expenses. I will say though that one potential issue with travel cards is that you may be able to justify the annual fee one year when you’re doing a lot of traveling and actually redeeming your points, but you may not be able to justify the annual fee during the years in between when you’re saving enough points to take a trip. Unless you’re a really high spender, you’re likely not going to be able to earn enough points every year to get value from your travel card every year, but you will need it once you’re ready to redeem your points, and I doubt if the credit card companies are going to let you cancel it in the off year and only hold it in the on year. So, you’ll probably just have to eat the cost and hope that you get enough value in the years that you travel. I’m willing to do this with something like the CSP, but not with a more expensive card than that.

I don't travel as much as I'd like to. I work in public education and can't take more than 3 consecutive non-sick PTO days during the school year. Such is life. I get it. I do like to try and do an annual summer trip with my family of 4, so I'm team cash back. I put the extra cash aside and then apply it towards those summer trips or keep it in savings.

I think it really depends on your financial situation, for someone who works an hourly wage job and doesn’t have a lot of vacation days, I think it is more important to get any extra cash you can. But if you are someone who is living comfortably and can afford to pay annual fee and can actually take advantage of those travel benefits as well as able to spend money just to use it on trips. Personally I would rather get money back to pay my bills and expenses, I am not in that see state where I can even afford to use my vacation day to go travel. I am using my vacation day to work another job

For travel, Delta AE (bag fee, boarding, now discount on points bookings), Marriott AE and Hilton AE, Cap One Venture X (lounge access, flight booking), Chase Sapphire (flight booking). I think I am going to get rid of the Marriott.

I personally think keeping your foot in the door of both is the way to go. I have never traveled and don't have plans to anytime soon but I'd like to some day, so that's why I have the freedom cards and the amex everyday card. All no annual fee cards that earn rewards points and can be redeemed for cash if I decide not to ever travel after all, and then if I ever do decide to travel I will get the sapphire preferred and/or the amex gold and platinum for the bonuses/perks/benefits and I'll already have a stockpile of points saved up from the no annual fee cards.
And in the strictly cash back side of things I have the amex blue cash everyday and the capital one savor

As far as I know, you actually can't transfer the points from the Amex everyday card to the amex gold/platinum. However, if you have either the CapOne Savor or Savorone cards you can transfer those points to the VentureX card which would provide similar value
