The 3RD WAVE synth is a very powerful wavetable synth inspired by the PPG Wave 2.2 and 2.3 synthesizers from the 1980s. It features 24 voices and 4-part multi-timbrality, 3 oscillators, 2 filter (1 analog LPF, 1 digital multi-mode SEM), 4 LFOs, 4 envelopes, 6-stage wave envelope, digital effects (2 per part), custom wavetable maker tool, sequencer, arpeggiator, 16-slot mod matrix, linear FM, glide, unison, 4 stereo outputs, audio input and more.
The Groove Synthesis 3RD WAVE sounds beautiful, lush and is fantastic for ambient soundscapes and other hybrid sounds thanks to its wavetable technology. The 4-part multi-timbral capabilities also enable massive stacked sounds, or evolving timbres over time thanks to layered parts.

I owned among other classics a PPG wave 2.2 with Kenton midi, a Waldorf microwave and an OSCar
back in the 90s and I must say that this is the first synth that sounds just as good as the PPG.

Thanks for the demo. It may sound strange, but after listening to this demo, I remember again why I sold my 2.3 back in the 90's. And here it is again: 90% of the sounds have this typical 'bellish' undertone. Every time again. It drove me nuts. And so I sold my PPG. I won't say this is a bad synth, cuz if I need this typical PPG bellish sound, I turn on my 32-voice Waldorf Q. Because of its VA-nature, I can do much more than those typical WTable sounds. And I have an Iridium which has all the PPG 2.3 features on board if needed. This is a nice synth. No doubt. It is the new 2.3.

The price is out of this world to! At 4999.00 it won't be apart of my sonic arsenal! Sounds nice and as they would say in the old days groovy like it's namesake.
It is pricey but it really takes the PPG sound to the next level.

I've only just recently purchased my most expensive synth yet, a Waldorf M, though.
The M also does the PPG stuff really well and is also WT into analogue.
Some of its presets are from the PPG.
This is the more capable, and expensive, unit though.
For me, I just wanted the PPG sound, not to take it to the next level...

@@synth4ever I just ordered a 3rd wave. I have an M. The M is cool. I have a Microwave 1A, but programming it is not fun. The Access Microwave programmer helps, but there are still a lot of controls that you still need the front panel for. Honestly the Quantum and M are my most used machines right now simply because they do so much out of the box. The latest update to the M allowing you to use transients is really REALLY cool as you can load up the Waveterm library and add your own custom wavetables or samples.
Omg I’ve never jonesed this hard for a hardware synth in my entire life. I love it! Maybe a higher wave table capacity? Can’t complain though.

I have the Prophet 12 and Waldorf M here. The 3rd Wave sounds a little bit like a Mix of these two, which I find interesting. Anyone knows which Filters are on the 3rd wave?

Sounds amazing! But in real world purchasing order it probably sits behind the OB-X8 and Super 6 for me. It also makes me wonder what the Behringer PPG clone will bring by comparison (if it ever comes). If it were in the $2k range I’d be much less reticent, but $3800 is pretty steep for something that may not be bread and butter.
It's a beautiful synth and for those that appreciate what it offers and love PPG-sounds, I think this is near the top!

Does anyone know if there are some PPG 360 presets onboard the 3rd Wave? I guess they wouldn’t be too hard to program since they’re unfiltered wavetables by Wolfgang, but my laziness hopes for presets of stuff first.
I think some of the original PPG wavetables, which I believe were in this synth, included those from the 360. If so, using those without any filter might get you close to the 360 sound.
How would you say the build quality / fit & finish is on the 3rd Wave?
When I tried it, very sturdy.
3d Wave can only be operated by aliens with 3 arms.
Trying to find a video that goes through every factory patch but can't, been searching all day. Does anyone know of any? there are 500 presets.
Sure sounds like a PPG to me! What do you reckon is the ultimate PPG music track/song in history? I wonder what Wolfgang Palm makes of this new synth.
Good questions, but I'm not sure about PPG songs...
Gary Numan's material from Berserker, The Fury, and Strange Charm was completely saturated with PPG sounds (The B-Sides have more PPG weirdness and are less radio-friendly). The Creatures' Amazing Run in the Tube is also a lot of PPG. Also Magica, but those are more along the lines of italo. The Fixx's Deeper and Deeper is saturated with a sound that's a filter-less sweep through Wavetable 13.

Tangerine Dream’s exit is virtually a PPG Demo record. Also Saga “Heads or Tales” particularly “The Flyer” and “Intermission”. This 3rd wave sounds terrific. Any of the first four albums by The Fixx as well.

Yes exactly, they have a character to then for sure. This brings harmonics to the sound that vsts are just not capable of, but if one likes that ppg ring is personal taste.

After hearing some more demos, i think, while it sounds nice and sparkling, it also sounds a bit flat ? More like the prophet 12.
Maybe it’s the UA-cam compression, the programming or the digital fx, but the Waldorf M in comparison seems to sound “rounder” and more “3d”, but less sparkling.
Hope i can try out the 3rd wave in person one time.
It can sound flat or sparkling depending on how the filters are set, it has a very broad and deep stereo field and it is a lot of money but not expensive given its capabilities.
