    Frieren hated demons so much that she developed Zoltrak into a demon killing spell and spread among mages so much that it officially became "ordinary offensive magic", secretly turning everyone into a demon killing specialist

      While that's partially true, we don't know if most mages' Zoltraak is the same as the one Frieren uses. She probably has kept modifying it long after she "gave it" to humanity so it's likely the spell she and Fern use is not the same Zoltraak that every other mage uses. The demons would have noticed if every mage ran around using a demon killing spell in their base kit I think.
      After all the demon said "We overcame Zoltraak 50 years ago", why would demons focus so much on overcoming a single spell like Zoltraak? Demons specialise in a single spell, and we saw no demon beside Qual who was presumed dead or missing use Zoltraak, so that means they overcame it to fight human mages, and if human mages used a modified version that the demon's analysis didn't cover, the demons would have noticed in the past 50 years. So yeah it's very likely most humans use something close to normal Zoltraak while Fern and Frieren use the demon-killing version that Frieren refined in the decades after she finished analysing the normal Zoltraak.

      @@Arkayjiya hmm, actually I disagree with this. Normal Zoltraak is a dark black beam as we see Qual using it in Ep.3 and is shown again later in the show as well being used by an equally powerful mage (avoiding spoilers) that is also black, where as "ordinary offensive magic" is a white/light blue beam which is the demon killing variety. Fern learned Zoltraak before she even met Frieren, it was already etched into her very being as a mage from an incredibly young age, Frieren didn't teach her anything special about the Zoltraak spell, she helped her with the fundamentals so her Zoltraak could reach the rock.
      It makes sense to me that Frieren likely altered Zoltraak slightly to make it specialized in demon killing while she was contributing to the analysis, secretly taking Quals ultimate weapon and tuning it to work against his kind without anybody knowing, likely not even the humans. Frieren and Fern are just more exceptional than the average mage, and again to avoid any spoilers its made pretty clear later on just how out of the ordinary they both are, especially when talking with serie.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya 4 дні тому +1

      @@Commanderstevo The coloring is meaningless. It's not even canon as far as I can tell. Zoltrack is always white until way later (and we don't even know if the black version is actually Zoltraak, it's not confirmed as far as I can tell). Qual's Zoltrack is white, Frieren's Zoltraak is white, Fern's Zoltraak is white, everybody's Zoltraak is white including the demon.
      The first time we start seeing a similar black spell is with the double during the exam but it's not the version the Demon called "demon-killing magic" as that one was white (also the demon specifically mention that Fern's version reminds him of Frieren and literally no one else. Like, has the guy not seen a single Zoltraak in 28 to 50 years? Makes no sense).
      Although interestingly, the Frieren clone spell seems to be a more powerful version of the spell Lerrnen uses. It might be a more focused Zoltraak, it might not, we don't know. Either way, it doesn't appear earlier and Qual certainly doesn't use it so it's not "the normal Zoltraak".
      Another strong proof that the black version is not "Qual's Zoltraak" is that it's massively more powerful and isn't blocked by shields while Qual's was. So the black spell isn't "Qual's Zoltraak" and it's not the standard "human Zoltraak" either as this one has been white since the start, ergo the coloring is irrelevant to our discussion.
      "Fern learned Zoltraak before she even met Frieren"
      Sure, and then Frieren kept teaching her magic for half a decade off screen so that also doesn't mean much, especially when it comes to slightly modifying a spell she's already very familiar with. And we have the Demon specifically telling us it's Frieren's spell (once again, him not seeing a single Zoltraak is 50 years is extremely unlikely, even mages with specialty use it such as Wirbel who can be seen using it in the manga even after the surprise attack. The demons have no reason to focus so much on overcoming Zoltraak as a species other than the fact humans use it massively).

    One of the coldest title drops ever😂
    "Sousou" is a word written with two kanji, the first meaning "to bury", the second meaning "to send off". "Sousou no Frieren" was first interpreted the sad way implying that Frieren sends off everyone she outlives because of her elven lifespan. But here comes ep8 to twist it, reveling us that it is in fact a nickname demons gave her after sending countless demons to their graves... For the subtitles they decided to go for "Frieren the Slayer", which is really badass but obviously lises the double meaning and the twist that comes with it... But it's fine cause it's cold as F

      @Haplo-san 5 днів тому +7

      Thus, "the slayer" is bad translation and also sounds so cheesy, kind of an elementary schooler would use as a Half-Life nickname. They could easily go with "journey's end" translation as a double-meaning for both her ending the journey of demons and her being at the end of the journey of her friends graveyard. Such a missed oppertunity to drop anime's full name as her nickname.

    Here a in-Depth explanation about the titel.
    Since the anime just recalled the title of the show with episode 08, I will try to explain to people who may not be familiar with Japanese why it is such a big deal, just a little FYI if anyone's interested.
    The Japanese title for this show is "Sousou no Frieren" which is also the title of episode 08. As you can see there is a short description "Sousou no" in front of our protagonist's name.
    Sousou (葬送) is a word that is formed by combining 2 characters each with their own meaning, 葬 "to bury" and 送 "to send off". Usually, the word has a sad and grieving nuance, but in some contexts, it also means "to kill/to end".
    At first, most people assumed that the title is like that because Frieren outlives all her friends, so she "sees them off" one by one. But at this point in the story, the demon reveals that it is actually a title given to her by demons because she has "sent so many demons to their deaths".
    People were SHOOK when this double meaning was revealed in the manga, it was just so cool lol
    I saw that English subtitles translated it into "Frieren the slayer", while still badass, it just doesn't fully show how the author played with words in the title, and I just think it's a pity that some people will not be able to appreciate it due to stuff lost in translation. IMO experiencing the realization that the title was not as simple as I thought was one of the highlights when reading the manga. But translation is hard, I totally get that. Pls dont use this context in a normal way of conversation. No japanese would understand this because to Bury/to send of is only using in this Anime.
    I'm assuming a lot of people already know this, but just in case, I wanted to create this comment, because I really love this show and I'm so happy that the anime is getting so much attention. The anime is doing such a good job, and I look forward to it every week. Cheers.
    Small Info: She used the therm "ippikki" Thats actual Hunters therm in japan for "one down" Demons are for Frieren less than Animals.

      In ippikki (一匹), "一" means one and "匹" is the unit when counting animals.
      There is a different unit when counting humans: "人", so one human will be "一人".
      In this episode Frieren counts the demon as ippikki because she sees demons as animals.

    Regarding Frieren being unable to connect with people, part of it _is_ that her sense of time is so different from humans - as we saw with Himmel's party, she kept referring to it as a "mere 10 years" and "less than 1% of my life". But also, Frieren has a lot of heavily coded autism traits (maybe or maybe not a full diagnosis), which would mean generally having a harder time picking up social cues and emotional expressions, even moreso than a regular elf.

    Demon nowadays is hopeless they dont know Frieren's power. She is lowkey mage in the party of heroes thats why. Also Fern is like 2.0 Flamme if Frieren teach all her knows spell to Fern, But on this present time is not worth it to be learn, Just "ordinary spell/soultrack" will do 👌

    The Frieren the Slayer part hits even harder if you speak Japanese. Im gonna explain poorly since Im just repeating from memory and dont speak Japanese myself (any Japanese speakers wanna jump in and explain better please do.) Basically it's a double entredre. Sousou no Frieren is both the title of the anime and the name he gives Frieren. The meaning most would have thought at first is something along the lines of Frieren at the Funeral. A nod to Frieren having to move past her friends deaths. The second meaning is Frieren at the funerals (since she caused them) is shown to also be true in this eposode. (Please someone help, I explained it really poorely lol)

      So how valid would "Frieren the Undertaker" have been as an alternate title, if ignoring the humor involved bringing to mind the wrestler?

    • @zurielsss
      @zurielsss 5 днів тому +1

      @@RubyDianArtsundertaker is probably the closest English word for 葬送 ,I don’t speak Japanese but I know Chinese which uses the same term since it’s kanji. A more accurate translation is “send you off to in a funeral” which means both to see friends pass due to age and sending your enemies to their graves.

      I kinda like the translators didn't try to shoehorn something in English. It would probably need to be pretty wordy to get the point across since the concept for the first meaning doesn't really have a short English phrase equivalent that I can think of. Taking a bit of liberty and calling it "Beyond Journey's End" kinda fits the original thought and still rolls of the tongue in English. Not to mention evokes a nice feeling of fantasy and whimsy.

    Spoiler for episode 10 :
    What I really love, is Frieren saying "I'm stronger than Aura the guillotine". Seems like a mistake from Frieren, since her whole thing is to hide her mana in order to deceive demons. Except that she is saying that while having her mana at minimum. From the demon perspective, it's like a child with a plastic knife saying "I'm the strongest in the world", which provoked him into letting his gard down completely.
