Only a small segment who lives in Colombo and suburbs are protesting against Gotabhaya Rajapaksha.. vast majority of Sri lankan population who live in villages still supporting the president Gotabhaya Rajapaksha.... The voice of majority is not representing at Galle face....
We are on holiday in Sri Lanka, a beautiful country, and although the people here are really struggling, they are making us feel so welcome. We travelled to Galle yesterday and got caught by the protests, but we fully support the Sri Lankans in their struggle against corruption. We will definitely come back one day.

I came to the US just because there are no opportunities in SL and find better living conditions because of the horrible system that had been created by these politicians in SL. I currently study in sri lanka and I really sympathise with sri lankan people ..they are so nice , friendly and kind. I like how they fight against corruption to see the light at the end of the tunnel...stay strong sri 🇱🇰

Unrest is not the perfect world to describe it, it's uprising of people against an extremely corrupted political system. I visited Sri Lanka in 2018 and loved its people and landscape. I went there last month again to make travel documentaries about its dense ancient sites. There are these tents over there: - Library - with productive books for knowledge expansion - College (for children to be occupied in drawing & crafts while parents protest) Pshycho-Socual support center - Legal help center &Etc Likewise many creative little centers in Gota-Go-Village... try to cover these aspects too... lists endless... there is a soecific tents for many as above...
This is the best way to hold a protest against corrupted government. ✌️ No violence, No damage to the government or private properties, no matter rich or poor people of all religions stand together for save country from corrupted politicians 💪🇱🇰 Whole world should watch this and learn how to hold modernized protest without violence ✌️✌️

The drivers use the horn to sound " kaputu kaak kaak kaak" which is an insult to Basil Raajapaksha who was the former finance minister who is responsible for the current economic crisis.
The horn sound mimics the slogan “the finance minister is a crow (or a vulture)” The slogan goes in two parts, first part is sung (or horn-ed) by one set of motorists and the second set of motorists mimic the sound “Basil Basil Basil Basil” which is the name of the (now resigned) finance minister, a brother of the president and the prime minister Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa. The creativity of these protesters are absolutely phenomenal
Also to add to that, A few weeks prior to the unrest around the country, the Finance minister made a public blunder when giving an explanation to the media, he was explaining how crows had hit a plane engine which caused the engine to fail. He mistakenly said 'Kaputas(means crows in Sinhala) have hit the plane'. This became a meme among the Sri Lankans on the internet, and once the protests started it became a chant, after which the motorists took up horning the chant- Kaputu Kaak Kaak Kaak- Basil Basil Basil Basil.
that horn sounds means "kaputu kaak kaak kaak" which is used to call crows to give them food by locals. that phrase is used during the protests cause the finance minister mistakenly said "kaputas"(in sinhala crow/raven is called "kaputa" and he made the sinhala singular noun plural by putting an "s" at the end of the sinhala noun according to english grammar which is not an accepted method to plural nouns in sinhala grammar) as a referance to crow during an english interview. so the term "kaputas" is now used as a term used to make fun at the finance minister.

So the minister of economy cant even properly speak. He is one of the main reasons this country is under such economic crisis. People are dying because of poverty right now. Although it is not the best time for you to enjoy the true essence of Sri Lankan nature, peacefulness, hospitality, cuisine and culture, there will be a time in the near future that you can enjoy all of that and please do visit the pearl of Asia again. We are going to win the protest and bring the economy back up. The current politicians stole billions of dollars from poor taxpayers and it has come down to people who can not fulfill their basic needs. More than half of the people in the country earn less than minimum wage. While there’s of course a political problem the real underlying problem is less political than about corruption and the way the political process itself has been corrupted by the people who have brought the country to this state. Prices are going up extremely rapidly so if things cost a little more then that’s okay, everyone is paying more for everything too, even the most ordinary things. Have a lovely time. The drivers use the horn to sound " kaputu kaak kaak kaak" which is an insult to Basil Raajapaksha who was the former finance minister who is responsible for the current economic crisis.

The horn sound mimics the slogan “the finance minister is a crow (or a vulture)”
The slogan goes in two parts, first part is sung (or horn-ed) by one set of motorists and the second set of motorists mimic the sound “Basil Basil Basil Basil” which is the name of the (now resigned) finance minister, a brother of the president and the prime minister Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The creativity of these protesters are absolutely phenomenal
Also to add to that,
A few weeks prior to the unrest around the country, the Finance minister made a public blunder when giving an explanation to the media, he was explaining how crows had hit a plane engine which caused the engine to fail. He mistakenly said 'Kaputas(means crows in Sinhala) have hit the plane'. This became a meme among the Sri Lankans on the internet, and once the protests started it became a chant, after which the motorists took up horning the chant- Kaputu Kaak Kaak Kaak- Basil Basil Basil Basil.
Actually they were singing songs that evoke feelings of patriotism : )

that horn sounds means "kaputu kaak kaak kaak" which is used to call crows to give them food by locals. that phrase is used during the protests cause the finance minister mistakenly said "kaputas"(in sinhala crow/raven is called "kaputa" and he made the sinhala singular noun plural by putting an "s" at the end of the sinhala noun according to english grammar which is not an accepted method to plural nouns in sinhala grammar) as a referance to crow during an english interview. so the term "kaputas" is now used as a term used to make fun at the finance minister.

Where basil is the name of the minister of economy who can't speak either english or sinhala properly. Once he was in a interview which was conducted in english and he stuttered like a baby and used the word kaputa many times which is the sinhala meaning of crow/black raven to describe the way that a raven hit a airplane. So the minister of economy cant even properly speak. He is one of the main reasons this country is under such economic crisis. People are dying because of poverty right now. It is so embarrasing as a nation to be under such a joke of a government.

Hi Steve ! Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka. Although it is not the best time for you to enjoy the true essence of Sri Lankan nature, peacefulness, hospitality, cuisine and culture, there will be a time in the near future that you can enjoy all of that and please do visit the pearl of Asia again. We are going to win the protest and bring the economy back up. The current politicians stole billions of dollars from poor taxpayers and it has come down to people who can not fulfill their basic needs. More than half of the people in the country earn less than minimum wage. I'm currently living in Canada but I support as much as I can for my people because Sri Lanka is my homeland regardless of where I live. Take care, Steve. God bless you!

I think you already know your way round. But be on your guard anyway. Though this is very good natured and also quite brave and determined it cannot go on forever, and that will be out of the peoples hands and very much dependent also on what happens over the next few days. Thankyou for trusting the people, it’s a wonderful country that has been serially let down by its politicians. As a student and young woman I spent a decade and a half there, it is never far from my mind, and I am so proud of it now. But also extremely fearful for the immediate future. Take care, go safely and thankyou for bring a really good video to those of us who are supporting SL from everywhere in the world. It helps us to be there in spirit. The crow reference to the car horn call and response is the Sri Lankan crows are also called scavenging crows, it’s a double play on both a story about crows and other birds, but also a reference to the ruling family eating anything and everything. While there’s of course a political problem the real underlying problem is less political than about corruption and the way the political process itself has been corrupted by the people who have brought the country to this state. Prices are going up extremely rapidly so if things cost a little more then that’s okay, everyone is paying more for everything too, even the most ordinary things. Have a lovely time.
