I don’t think this painting achieves what I planned it to but, I’m looking forward to trying to paint this concept again. We’re all going to make pieces we don’t like, but the hard part and the place where we really grow is in our critiques after the work is done by identifying things we did wrong, and determining how we’re going to do better next time. So despite my instincts, I chose to still share this painting with you as an encouragement that I do not always like every painting I make, but I do always have to strive to learn something from them.

When we study art from books or in museums, it's easy to get the impression that the best artists' careers proceeded in a perfect, logical progression from one piece to the next, with each in its place in sequence, but that isn't really how it happens in the studio, is it? Every artist has false starts, abandoned experiments and divergent, dead end paths that don't make the final cut when a curator or scholar tells the story. There's a lot of editing in every artist's career, and a lot of "B-sides", and even if those aren't the most celebrated works, they are still significant in the development of every artist!

Whether a painting is disappointing or not doesn't matter in many ways. They all move us forward as artists. I always ask myself "What do I like?" and "What do I not like?" to help with the next one. Be gentle on yourself. I think your painting is lovely.

Thank you for this video! I, as a photographer, want to share my thoughts. I used to hate my art and think badly of myself if I didn't achieve the end result I was striving towards. Of course that mentality led me to self-hatred. Self-hating is easy. As well as pointless. It never helps you grow, it just makes you feel worthless. So I had to change my point of view. Now, when I am not satisfied with the result, I ask myself: why? Was it composition? Color correction? Editing? Was model's posing too unnatural? Was it a bad location? Boring idea? And now, instead of saying to myself that 'I am a bad photographer', I ask myself 'In which ways my art need to change for me to be proud of it?' and 'What can I do better next time to avoid the mistake I just made?'. This mentality helped me grow SO MUCH. Firstly, because of the fact that we can't always be perfect. We, as artists, as humans, sometimes make a wrong move. And that is okay, because it is natural for us. And if we keep on blaming ourselves instead of learning from our mistakes, we will never grow. Practice makes perfect. And it is imposible to be perfect without any practice, as well as any mistakes. You are not a failure because you failed. Instead, you are a dedicated artist, if you failed and learned from your mistake! :)

Hi! I love your channel! I am new in this side of the art, please can you tell me the sizes of your printings? I wanna be like you! 💟
Hey Ashleigh, you have almost a full value range in the foreground - the petals are nearly white and the shadows around the stem are almost a black. The background is almost white as well and so you get a feeling of confusion between what is foreground and what is background. This is probably why you don't like it. If you use high value white shapes in the foreground then you must go a bit darker in the background. This will enhance the depth and make your flowers read better. An easy way to avoid this breakdown in composition is to step back and view it from 20-30 feet or do a 5 value study before hand and place it next to the easel. Chin up Ashleigh!......Painting is hard:)
Your art is beautiful; however, I find the combination of your voice and the music is very confusing. The music overtook your voice.

A "bad painting" is actually a great teaching tool you can use for future reference if you analyze it and try the best you can to find out and define what's "wrong"....or you can just let it dry and paint over the whole thing later on, or just specific areas.
I think the composition and colors and technique were very pretty, but it was when you got to the background where it seemed like the detail of the lead between the stained glass was fighting with the bouquet. My thought was maybe loosely painted color patches in more muted hues to make color and detail of the bouquet stand out. I think it was perfect just before you added the lines, and only because of the conflict for attention. It's beautiful. 💕
I think this painting perhaps looks a bit unfinished, just let go of it for a while, and come back to it later on with fresh eyes and mind. Also I would add a third rose at the front. Good luck Ashleigh 😊👍

I like how you admit that you don’t like it, because that’s the only way to improve what you love. Others who view it may say they love it and mean it but it has to strike a chord in you to meet your standard. The best way to learn is to practice. In history, many famous artists’ “practice” have become famous works of art. Which goes to show that art truly is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder! You just can’t quit!

As long as we're all weighing in here, I think your painting works really nicely, maybe not in the way you planned, but sometimes it's about the journey, and we learn something from wherever we end up. I like to hang onto my let-downs and incompletes for posterity, and for future consideration. Maybe if you're going to wipe the canvas, you could first capture a photo, and archive it digitally, break it up into layers, and mess around with the background/foreground relationship to your heart's content, even after repurposing the canvas. I often import my misses into a new project years later as my inspiration layer.

I think it looked great even before you started adding the background. Colors, composition and everything looked good to me. With flowers, it's always hard to go wrong.
i had to smile when i watched this. You have taken what i have said in the past to heart or you have refound it along the way from another source. Critiquing your own work when done helps you grow and it shows in your painting. Study it , learn from it , do better in the next painting. One thing i would suggest is not to rub out yur paintings. You may not like how it turned out ( and i have said this a few videos ago ) someone else will and they will buy it. As a matter of fact many of the greatest artists in history their early works are much sought after by collectors. It shows the progression of the master from beginer to what they become. You may not like it but i assure you someone else will. I have watched all your videos from day one and i see your channel is growing again Congrats on 200k subs. Keep being you and doing the work . I look at your face and i wonder what is going through that beautiful mind of yours to give you so much trouble. I think i know but i will keep that to myself untill you decided to tell the public.
