Why Would Anyone Want to Live With Less? (filmed in Chicago, IL)

  • To most people in today's society minimalism seems like pure insanity. Why would anyone purposely decide to have less in life? Isn't it the thought of having more in life what keeps us getting up and going to work every morning?
Hi, I'm Timothy Ward, and I used to feel the same way about possessions. I thought that my self worth was tied to certain things I owned and so I wanted more and more of those things. It wasn't until I discovered minimalism and gave it a try that I realized how wonderful life can be when you have only what you need, and maybe a little more.
In today's video, which I filmed in the beautiful city of Chicago, I discuss 3 positive benefits of living a minimalistic lifestyle. If you are just looking into minimalism or are thinking about trying it out in your life then I highly recommend you watch this video. I'm not trying to sell you anything folks, I just want you to be as happy as I am!

Great message. I’m 24 and honestly the older I get the less I want in my life. Goes for people too. I rather have 1- 2 people in my life then a whole bunch. For once In my life I’m at peace. I don’t look at another women or another man processions. Because we may not know how they got it / how they’re obtaining it.

This is so relatable 24 too lol! Less is way more. I can’t have too many people on my circle. Less equals less stress.

This takes me back to how I thought that having it all was living your "best life". Part of it was the mentality I had when I was married; always working long hard hours to provide for my family. Thing was, I could never really afford the things I wanted and I was mostly sacrificing to buy my ex-wife what she wanted; all to "make her happy". Then my (ex)wife nuked the family. I immediately registered back to school, picked up a side job for more money and became a serial dater. I realized two things; I was digging myself into an early grave because I rarely slept and I was missing out on my time with my children. I've since changed all that. I haven't dated in 2+ years, I'm more focused and involved with my children (and I love it!!!!). I've given up chasing a degree that I really don't need because I currently have a good paying job. For some stupid reason, I wanted to show my ex-wife how much better I could do without her. In hindsight, that's total bullshit because I wasn't really living MY life. There's a few things I'm still working out, like getting rid of everything I have in storage and divorce myself from working overtime.
In closing, I can honestly tell you that I'm so much happier with less things in my life. My goal is to do seasonal work at major campgrounds and travel the country on a school bus conversion, and hopefully own a dog or two for companionship. Sorry for the long rambling, I just love timothy's message.

Your videos are on point! As a collector, I know exactly what you mean by getting rid of useless things. Been selling off parts of my collections in mass. I felt so drowned by it at times. I just never took the time to go through my belongings until now. You definitely don’t miss it once it’s gone. The upside of collecting is that you can always make good money back from it. So you are definitely telling the truth about that. The more I sell, the more im anxious to get ride of things. Sold a lot of my beloved possessions, but I feel so relieved. Literally down to my minimum.

32 and i haven't owned a bed for the past 2 years :), i enjoy the free space. I'm glad for the roof over my head the heating during winter and the air conditioning during summer. Work to put bread on the table and save for travel and other much-needed things, i wouldn't call myself a minimalist yet but yes I'm getting there, u start to declutter things people, and a lot of other things, i am able to understand life a lot better and it's helping me live my life a lot better. Pray everyone else's journey is going as smooth as possible much love from across the pond :)

Well said! I've believed since a young age that minimalism is the is best , maybe only, way for us, to move forward as humanity. So that we can truly focus on caring for our mental health, our communities- eachother & the environment/our home! Rather than things..

I listened to Marie Kondo’s book called, Spark joy, three times while I went through everything in my house. That was three years ago and Im still getting rid of stuff. I’d rather be surrounded by a few things that give me joy. Plus it helps me not over spend. My sister gets irritated at how long it takes me to go shopping, because I have to sit and really think, do I need this? Do I love this?

I tried becoming a minimalist two years ago. I was done seeing clutter and told myself that if I haven't seen the item in 3 months, it's going on eBay. Long story short, the worst of the consumption withdrawals was over and done with after 2 months. It was made much easier when I saw more money in my bank account and I have room to move around! I used that money instead for traveling and like you said, you will remember your vacations more than you will your possessions. Because of this, I was sold on not bringing in crap into the house that's not needed.
November rolls along, I got a new job and have to move to a new city. By then, I got rid of a huge chunk of my possessions and was so glad I did because that meant having to buy a bigger and more expensive U-Haul to move crap I decided I didn't want anymore. I was done moving in a matter of days because I didn't have boxes and boxes of crap anymore. My new place looks like it's "been robbed" because I got rid of so much. Family and friends ask me if I have any plans to decorate my new place. Hell no, I don't! I love not having to worry about possessions anymore and I love the fact that I have money now because I'm not buying possessions.

Buy a home its your castle. Build a nest egg .Spend your money. It would cost me 5 times more today to buy my house today then I bought it.. A dollar is worth little today.. I like the idea of less is more. You have to draw the line between becoming a pack rat with things you will not miss if you discard and things that are of value..He with the most toys wins and on the other hand there's no U haul truck behind the Hurst. Life is about balance. Its not all about how much you make but what you do with it.

Think about it. We are getting double taxed on our incomes. First you get the taxes taken out of your check,, then you're taxed again when buying items at the store. I've saved 1000s just dumpster diving retail stores. Some items need a little fix up but I feel great getting free items for my home that other people are paying ridiculous amounts for in store, probably on their credit cards. $30 for a decorative seasonal pillow, that's crazy.

Veganism isn't as minimal or restrictive as you think. It's just minimizing the amount of suffering you support in this world, and we always get crapped on for that even when it's jokingly because I think people misunderstand living plant-based. Because harming & consuming animals is truly unnecessary, it would align perfectly with your definition of minimalism which is "living with just enough". In the 21st century, we no longer have the need or the justification to eat animal products. You should try it for a month, you'll love how amazing it makes you feel physically mentally and spiritually :) thanks for the video.

Everyone starts rich with time. They then spend that wealth to become rich with possessions. Later, they see that without time, the possessions aren’t very valuable or wise to acquire at the expense of time.

  • @Thomas63r2
    @Thomas63r2 3 роки тому +1

Human nature is a weird animal, primitive practices of accumulation have survived through to the modern era. In years past I worked in home service insurance, so I was visiting clients in their homes. One of the pieces of advice that I would give senior clients who were open minded: your family does not want all this stuff you have accumulated - they will just throw most of it away when you pass. Why not rehome the things you no longer need while you are alive, that way you can see it go where it is wanted. Plus you will be reducing the burden on your family - lots of families anguish over what to do with all the stuff in a deceased family members house, they may even fight over how it is distributed, sold, given away or thrown away. Do you own your possessions, or do they own you? The accumulation enemy are the things you do not want, do not need, or do not use. Many people have an abundance of stuff not just in storage units, their garage (which has so much stuff that a car will not fit), but also in their kitchen! I see lots of unused gadgets in peoples kitchens - while they complain they don't have enough counter or prep space. I have slowly been reducing my life's accumulation. I moved into a smaller house and it took me a couple of years but I emptied out my garage and can now park two cars in there. It is a lot of work to sort through boxes of stuff and be honest that if it has been in boxes for more than two years that it really is not needed.
