      Maybe you are not super young. I am retired and I loved my Kindergarten. I many years taught kindergarten and where I taught, the little kinders were so stressed. They took out all the fun stuff, (2015). They had to write paragraphs. I hated teaching that. I felt sorry for the kids. My kinder back in the 1960's was half day. We sang, dressed up, finger painted, snacked. napped home. Now it is different.

    We pulled our son out of a French school. He’s English but here in Quebec most English children go to school 100% in French. It’s like jumping into the deep end without knowing how to swim. My poor son came home and said “I didn’t understand a word all day”. The teacher told us he would pick it up after 6-12 months and other parents said they forced their child to go and it’s NORMAL. I said “why is this normal??”. I pulled him out and found a school that is more gentle. This is stress for a poor child! 99% of parents don’t listen to their child’s feedback and force them into a system they don’t even question.

      You are such a compassionate parent. I have spent most of my life learning Spanish on my own simply because I love the language and it is something I want to do! It gives me pleasure to learn it. However, if I were to be magically transported to a Spanish speaking town and was told I was on my own, I would be soooo stressed! The average person does not easily learn foreign languages. It turns your brain inside out, you are forced to think in ways your native language doesn't know about. It requires an understanding of the culture of that foreign language. I think you did the right thing. Your son could attend an English speaking school and take French classes as a subject to learn because he lives in Quebec and it will help him out to get a feel for the language.

    Fantastic message. Your life is yours, and it doesn't need to look like anyone else's if you don't want that. We are mere stardust on a planet that itself is near infinitely tiny in the scheme of the greater universe. The messages from society pressuring us to be a certain way or spend a certain way are baseless and without any kind of greater authority. It is up to us to determine what we want to do. Thanks for this great video. Today I went for a run, meditated, and turned on some UA-cam. It has been wonderful, and I've spent nothing.

  • @TinyMaths
    @TinyMaths 3 роки тому +27

    Absolutely refreshing to hear someone cover this subject; it's almost taboo, or people just haven't really thought about it.
    There's a lot of pressure to 'DO' things all the time from people in your circle. Understanding that, to a certain extent, you don't have to do ANYTHING, was a startling realization that came to me after I spent a period questioning a lot of things. A silly example is when people at work ask me, " what do you have PLANNED for the weekend"; there's a subtle pressure there, to say something that 'sounds' good, to ensure you have something 'cool' to do; something interesting to talk about. Nowadays I tend to say " I've got NOTHING planned ". That's often followed by an awkward silence, which I refuse to break. It's great because I don't have to tell half-lies and make up sh*t just to sound like I'm a normal guy doing what everyone else deems as 'socially acceptable'. Because, quite often, I do very little at weekends, but rest, or indulge my hobbies; by all appearances my life is BORING, and it's by design.
    Actually, come to think of it; a few years back I think one of my work colleagues recognized this in me because, for my birthday, she bought me a book titled 'The Pointless Book' (by Alfie Deyes). It has all these useless but fun puzzles and exercises in it. Absolutely useless to anybody; she somehow realized I would find that fun. And I did. She was from an older generation.

And the people with a minimalistic perspective are just making room for people like me in the world to go get these opportunities and gifts life has to offer. If you never try, you'll never know what you're really made of. I guess it has a lot to do with how people were raised and the influences they had around them. I grew up around go getters so ima go get it. I don't knock nobody for accepting their minimalist life. Only reason why I am still doing what I am doing is bc of debt from past decisions and lifestyle. I have to do it until I can dig myself out unfortunately. But I completely agree

    Thanks Tim and keep making videos man!

    We went on a road trip from California to Florida. We went to Yellowstone on the way back. We seen Grand Canyon year before. Travel nursing I get to see a lot of wonderful places. I would like to live simply and grow my own veggies and fruits one day. Slow down would be nice. We own a small home that is paid for and would love to live in the mountains. We could rent our house to travel nurses lol. Now at 55 years old I know I might only have 20 more years or less left on this earth. I settled for less to travel and work less. I am off work since May. I am focusing on my mental and physical health. Not sure after 27 years of nursing if I want to continue doing it. The stress is crazy but the travel money is good.

      LOL. Yeah, I have no idea why he insists on misusing that word. I think he's just being rebellious against us language and grammar police. Sometimes it works, though, when he's actually talking about true ideals. Anyway, the content is much more important!

    Love this so much Tim! You are so right and most of us live our whole lives without ever realizing it. Took me til 42 years old when that same light bulb went on and it changed my life. I realized there was NOTHING forcing me to not live my dream yet I had lived and worked in the same area my entire life, somehow having placed this rule on myself that I had to stay in one place and retire from the same job. I literally said to myself one day "Wait a minute you are a grown adult and can do whatever you want!" It had finally clicked and that's when I began planning my big move north to Alaska. Thanks for the inspiration always Tim! Gorgeous scenery but not gonna lie, those thermal pools are beautiful but scare me lol

    I share this religion! Am making some of these breakthroughs and realizations in the past year or so of my life. My ideal lifestyle would be the nomadic camper, which is so opposite of American capitalist consumer culture. It takes a lot of de-programming to convince yourself that it is perfectly fine to live like that if its what makes you happy. I've had exact same thoughts about what society says I have to do as a middle-aged adult vs. what I feel I have to do. I think I nipped society right in the bud by realizing that I don't even need to "succeed" by its definition... its totally ok for me to "fail" at that! As long as I feel I am "succeeding" at the things that I truly want to do, living a lifestyle that truly allows me to have time to create joy, it does not matter how that translates to the rest of the world. So I went and lived on the road for 3 months and totally loved it, on several different levels.
    I love what you say about the basic need of our ancestors was just survival...if you were surviving, you were succeeding. Parts of our being crave more complexity than that and are willing to commit to more pursuits, but on some basic level our being really wants to be left alone to live simply and closer to the bone.

    Man, your videos resonate with me. This is the same attitude I have with life. Everyone is too busy trying to be socially acceptable instead of living the life they truly want. Its the small things in life that matter.

    Excellent video Timothy, you explained it very well. I'm 63 now and have come to realise this gradually over the years. I used to beat myself up constantly for not being 'productive' enough - I even still do sometimes but not as severely as before. I'm now mostly conscious of the fact that I could simply stay in bed or sit watching a film and it wouldn't ultimately matter. I do choose to do things though, I do still want to do things and do still feel responsibility to make myself somehow 'useful'. I also still feel that it would be possible to waste my life although i know in fact that that's not really possible (it's just a value judgement). It's an ongoing conflict but at least I'm now aware enough not to take it, or myself, or society, too seriously. Us humans are just one species of ape amongst at least several hundred million other known species of life on Earth. Of all those species, the only ones who give a toss about most of the issues we worry about is us - even other individual people or other human societies don't share our particular concerns and priorities. Basic day to day survival seems to be the only constant across all life. Keep up the good work Timothy, you're an interesting guy to listen to.

    I wish that's true, that at the end of the day I can just sit and do nothing, but part of my anxiety and mental health issue is the self-doubt I have regarding my corporate work, and at the end of the day I'm still in front my computer studying and upskilling, because otherwise my impostor syndrome will shoot to the roof...
