  • Pump Products is back with another How-To guide. In this video, our expert Nick will walk you through the basics of attaching a vertical float and piggyback tethered style float switch to the discharge pipe.
Float switches are mechanisms that allow you to operate your pump automatically depending on the water level in your pit and basin.
This is a very simple process with minimal tools/equipment required.
The pumps in the video are:
The Goulds LSP0311ATF submersible sump pump (www.pumpproduc...)
and the Goulds STS21V submersible sump pump (www.pumpproduc....

We just moved into a house where the washer drains into the utility sink, but the utility sink isn't big enough to hold a full laundry load's worth of water, so we'd have to sit by the washer or check on it every 20 minutes or so to see if we needed to turn the pump on, yet, since you can't let it run dry. I'm going to get a piggy back float switch for the utility sink and that should make it so we don't need to babysit it anymore. Very excited.

Thanks for this - I'll have to install a piggyback float since my Zoeller automatic float failed in the middle of a rain storm.

Ty for sharing. I guess the length og the puggy back style all depends on the pit. I heard before you dont want the float to hit sides. So im a fan of a shorter float length. It just needs to go up an down .id hate to see it get twisted around pipe.

Any idea where is can buy just that clamp with the black plastic piece for that tethered float?
My pump had a simple clamping piece of metal for the cord screwed into the pump housing, but when I tried to loosen it to adjust the float level, the screw broke off. That clamp with that black plastic piece looks like it would fit the bill for me.
    Thanks.

The last one, can this be used on a fish pond? To stop the pump if low water?

Will the vertical float switch work to replace a Shellback switch that goes inside the laundry tub? The pump plugs into the float switch.

Where can buy sump floats with mercury switch and not the unreliable mechanical switch?

I have to replace my float switch, I was just worried I'd have to tear the pump apart. This SHOULD be easy.

It took me a second to realize he’s not showing a replacement or first install.. it was already wired into the unit he’s just attaching it 😂

You didn't explain at what level the piggy back tether is activated.

For the tethered piggy back style should I leave it constantly on (plugged in) and let the float decide when to turn it on. As of now I plug it in when the water level gets high. I was afraid to burn the pump or the float out.

leave it plugged in. no need to plug/unplug constantly. that's the purpose of the float - to turn on when the water gets high, then it shuts off. will not burn anything out.
