  • Did St. Augustine teach unconditional election like Luther and Calvin?
Chapter 41 of his work "On Grace and Free Will" clearly teaches that he did:

I would encourage everyone to read the entire book. It's short and balanced. Remember: all sin comes from ourselves and our own wills but God overrides evil for good (Genesis 50:20).
All that the God of good and holiness does is good and holy-worthy of praise-and so if He decreed to permit the Fall of man, He did it for a good and holy purpose: a praiseworthy reason beyond our comprehension (e.g. Rev. 13:8).
"The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil" (Prov. 16:4).

Apologetics is my passion for the glory of Christ. And I would love to co-labor with you in the gospel and the truth, as we contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 1:3, Heb. 6:9-10, Gal. 6:6, 1Tim. 5:17-18, 3 John 1:8).
"But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister." (Hebrews 6:9-10, KJV)

St Augustine taught that in justification we are truly made just (not merely declared so), that we can preserve and grow in justice through our works, and that this state of justification can be lost. Needless to say, he did not have a calvinist view of justification.

I've not heard of the claim that he believed that we can preserve and grow in justification through our works. What reference of his are you referring to?
Augustine was in a different time and he had to deal with very different heresies. His time was much less about the manner and details of sinners being made right with God or the right definition of 'justification'. Protestants nevertheless teach with Augustine that an inherent righteousness (beginning as partial then ending as an entire sanctification) is necessary for salvation and entering into heaven. No unclean thing can enter heaven and people who are wicked by nature can never be happy in heaven. Perhaps Augustine blended justification and sanctification together as one, but I need to research it more closely. Certainly he believed in a sovereign and free grace, eternal security and perseverance in faith by grace alone for all the elect.

      @@ETHANGELIST Define eternal security.
Here are some passages where he teaches justification by works/against faith alone - On Continence 30, On Grace and Free Will 19-20, On Merit and the Forgiveness of Sins 2:3, On Faith and Works 21, Enchiridion 70-72.
