@@ulceratedpiss Craig Counsell was hit by a pitch before Luis Gonzalez came to bat, so he was on first when the winning hit happened. Jay Bell was at third and scored the winning run. Counsell did score the winning run on the 1997 World Series for the Marlins on an Edgar Renteria single.
Good ol' Jay Bell! I remember his one random year spent with the Kansas City Royals where he was the best position player for a bad team before he went on to bigger and better things in the Arizona desert.
Dude. This was an amazing story...i'm a big baseball fan and never knew this!! Your video was nicely narrated and edited. I subbed immediately! Yes, Jay Bell wasnt an HOFer ---but he was a Hell of a ball player and a great guy. TY for this vid.
he just started swinging more! he had a lot of lineup protection and pitchers found themselves needing to throw strikes to the dude because they didn't want to face Matt Williams, Luis Gonzalez, or Steve Finley, all of whom were known quantities of being a good hitter and appeared after him in the batting order for the most part. He hit 24 of his 38 home runs before the All-Star game, with the shot in this video being the final one before the break. He didn't really decline so much in the second half so much as he did adjust to what was given to him. He had the exact same OPS in the first half as he did in the second half, but hit 10 more homers before the ASG. The more you know!
Whats the old cliche about if they tried to sell this story as a screenplay, no one would believe it? Well,.......truth is truly stranger than fiction. This is the most heartwarming story since Field of Dreams.
I’m surprised whatever insurance company had to pay this off didn’t try to find some loophole to avoid paying. That happens more than you think with these types of giveaways.
Played little league/high school ball against Jay Bell's kid growing up and the dude couldn't have been nicer. Always took time out to say hello to the kids on opposing teams, would sign autographs, etc. Just a stand up guy from my experience
Listen, it's a great story, i'll give you that. But, my main takeaway from all of this is, Arizona needs to use purple and teal again. Those are the DBacks I know and rooted for.
It's a crazy fact since there has not been very many hitters with glasses. Bonds and Gwynn were said to have 20/10 vision, I've always assumed most elite hitters had better than average eye sight.
It’s not even once in a lifetime, it’s once in 1,000 lifetimes to get one moment like that, all or nothing. No wonder he ranks it as his top moment with nothing coming close.
Actually, they didn't know any of the players at the time. Her husband suggested Jay Bell at random. So they were EXTREMELY lucky considering that they didn't know anything about Diamondbacks at the time
A million dollars isnt enough to retire on really. It was at one time, but not anymore. Runaway inflation makes a low six figure salary hard to live off of without careful money management. In 1999, a $100,000 a year job was a fortune. In 2024 after the last few years, its damn near the bottom of actual middle class
Turning the screen purple during the most important moment only accomplished viewers not being able to see the point of contact. Prettttty lame dude. Good job setting it up but damn, fumbled at the 1 yard line
Jay Bell scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the World Series, and still ranked this moment ahead of that.
absolutely insane
as a yankee fan, i agree with him :)

Just hearing how much Bell cared about it makes this an awesome story. What a dude.
This was one of the coolest stories I've never heard about in sports, period.
I as a Chinese Shephard who lives in Himalayas know about it
@avgGamer662 only someone on a mountain would pay attention to the rockies.
So wonderful to see a player celebrate like that because he just changed a fans life ... and hit a granny slammy! Cool video.
The clap to himself rounding 1st is awesome
The summoning salt music gives it that touch that makes videos unforgettable.
It’s called we’re finally landing
I got goosebumps as you built up to the historical moment, so incredible. Excellent video!
In some ways, this has to be just as if not better than winning a world series ring for a baseball player. Once in a lifetime.
Lol,Jay Bell scored the game winning run in the 9th inning of game 7 in the World Series to beat the Yankees in 2001.
@@riltalk4055 And yet still ranks this moment above that as his favorite in his career.

I’ve lived in Phoenix my whole life (24 years), and I had no idea about this story. Thank you for this!
Honestly never heard of this story or even bell for that matter. But he sounds like a great dude and what an awesome story this is, thanks man
“Good guy Jay Bell” i like that
How can you not be romantic about baseball
This is so cool I never heard of this story. Amazing I love Jay Bell now
“You just won that lady a million dollars!” So cool, awesome topic.

I was waiting for the video to turn into a "The radio station refused to pay and a lengthy lawsuit followed"
Couldn't happen to a nicer fella! Thanks IcyVert/SRS!

Most heart warming event in Baseball History since Enrico Pallazzo.

Exactly like the one with the Bulls..
@@Bigedub101 lol. That’s the first example that came to my mind too.
Jay Bell and Craig Counsell two of the best diamondbacks of all time
I love that he swung at a ball above his chest to make this happen!
High outside pitches were his wheelhouse somehow
I was at that game as a kid. It was INSANE. I had no clue how good I had it as a kid watching Randy Johnson and curt schilling ever give games.

stark raving summoning salt
The fact that he swung at that pitch that was at his shoulders

How don’t I remember this. I was a 14year old baseball obsessed kid when this happened
I'm feeling the same. I was 12. But the news wasn't as available at that time.
This isn't the most expensive swing in history. David Bote's walk-off grand slam ended up costing the Cubs ~$14 million .

Jimmy Haynes doesn't give that many grand slams up? The record is 10 in a career by Nolan Ryan. Ryan played 27 seasons compared to Haynes 9 seasons
Fun fact: Jim Palmer never gave up a grand slam or back to back homeruns in his 19 seaon MLB career.
