Jay Bell scored the winning run and jumped into Matt Williams' arms to celebrate at the plate. Really the first two D-backs, the irony was not lost on me. Such a fun time to be D-back fan.
Without doing any real math here, I'm guessing that hitting 6th or 7th in the inning is probably the most likely spot for a player to hit a grand slam. You obviously wouldn't want a player who's batting 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and there's a better chance of the bases loaded coming with at least 1 out.
Yeah, that math checks out. I was mainly referring to the fact that most innings don't go past maybe 4 or 5 batters, so he had a slim chance of making it to the plate

@@TheDiamondBaseball It was so good! My grandfather was on the board of directors for SRP at the time, and they had season tickets right on 3rd base for years from the very first day. It was incredible.
A similar thing happened at a Tigers game I was at as a kid. I barely remember it but my family took pictures with the couple that won $50,000 when Cecil Fielder hit a GS like this. If he specifically hit one in a specific inning, they'd pick a seat at random and the person in it would win. He did and the winner was sitting only 4 seats away from us. Again, I only have VERY vague recollection of being in the Old Tiger's Stadium at all. I recall the blue seats and generally being up high. I recall my parents and siblings being there and I recall people celebrating. That's it. Still, the odds are pretty incredible even with that but to call it yourself for a million makes it even crazier.
Yeah I didn't realize just how many teams have done something like this in the past. Apparently something similar happened with the Orioles in the '80s too. I can't imagine being in that position, must be crazy for them.
If that was me in the stands, the pitcher would have thrown a wild pitch on 2-2 that scored a runner and made it 2nd n 3rd. Then the next pitch would be a home run

He asked to see, so I hand over. He looks through, say wow nice collection however I like this card best n pulls out a 1993 topps card of himself n signs it hence my second autograph from him. 1.78K? This channel must be brand new. Im happy to get in early on it.
Actually, it’ll be a year next week! But it takes a while for the algorithm to pick up content sometimes lol, and it’s finally starting to happen for us
Finally, an uplifting story - thanks.
I like the vibe of this video! It has the Jon Bois feel but in a unique way. Nice to see it getting traction randomly on UA-cam haha, also, awesome story! Never heard of this
Thank you so much for those kind words, to even be mentioned in same breath as Jon means a lot - I appreciate the support!
I remember watching that game from home with the family. It was incredible!!!
I wish I could remember this era of Dbacks baseball, but unfortunately I was just too young at the time
@@TheDiamondBaseball It was so good!
That is the perfect storm of events.
Indeed
What an incredible story. I’ve never heard of this before. Very cool.
Being from Arizona I remember this till this day. What are the odds it’s just crazy
Truly mind-boggling
7:00 imagine the pitcher or manager decides to be a villain and just calls for an intentional walk
I don't think anyone can be that much of an asshole, but then again I may just think too highly of people
If that was me in the stands, the pitcher would have thrown a wild pitch on 2-2 that scored a runner and made it 2nd n 3rd. Then the next pitch would be a home run
Great story great video 10/10 all around!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
This video was so well put together…I loved it, you got a new sub
Thank you! Appreciate the support and kind words
Best MLB story ever!
This may have been mentioned in the 765 comments, but she won $50k a year for 20 years. I hope she lives long enough to collect the funds. The Sponsor only had to shell out around $375k for the annuity that paid the $50k per year. That is based on the treasury bill rate at the time.
Yours is the first comment I've read so thank you for the info.
Jay Bell went to cal state Northridge with one of the best players to never play in the big leagues. Perry. I won’t say his last name.
This is a great video. Didn’t know this about Jay Bird
This is a fantastic story, thank you for sharing it.
Subbed
Thank you for the support, glad you enjoyed it!
Don't know why I just got recommended this now - I'm so happy to see all these great baseball content creators. Keep up the good work homie! Great video!💓
Thanks for the support, I appreciate it!
Dude imma say this your channel is gonna explode soon
Thanks, appreciate the support!
Baseball is truly such an amazing sport for stories
Exactly, it’s part of what makes this game so special
@@TheDiamondBaseball
It’s an unchangeable game honestly !!
Except the strike zone …. These umpires need some tech help lol
@@Daytonian17 I agree, but I'll admit I'm very skeptical of robo-umps. I think managers should be able to call for a review of a strike call if it changes the complexion of a game. They only get a set number of challenges per game anyway, so I don't think it would interrupt things any more than replays already do.
@@TheDiamondBaseball
No not replacing the human eye . Just giving the umpires a physical strike zone to see through their vision only !! Some type of soft VR for them !
@@Daytonian17 That's an interesting idea...may be something to look into
I'm just hearing about this in 2021. Great story from a Yankees fan 🙋♂️
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
If you look at the number 33 sideways you can see a heart in the space between the numbers.
Great story-better than expected.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I want it to be known I am here before the channel even has 100 subscribers. This channel is gonna explode.
I am here to verify that your claim is valid and shall be entered immediately into the 'Scrolls of Accomplishments'
I'm glad I came across this and that I love baseball..
Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@TheDiamondBaseball thanks
Big MLB fan here and I had no idea. Great video! 👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Wow that was a pretty cool story. As a result, I've subscribed to your channel. Good story telling too!
Thanks man, appreciate the support and I'm glad you're enjoying the content!
Jay bell's numbers jumped thro the roof as did luis Gonzales who hit around 55 homers that year no dout both were juiced up on illegal substances. As a cubs fan i followed Gonzalez throughout his career glad he got a ring along with mark grace
Yeah, as a Dbacks fan I don't want to admit it, but its hard to deny the obvious elephant in the room lol
Keep up the grind you’ll get recognition soon you got quality content
Thank you so much, appreciate the support!
@@TheDiamondBaseball Can you make a video about Team USA at the world baseball classic and Dominican Team
I’d love to talk about the 2017 WBC at some point, I’ll probably make a video sometime in March if the WBC actually happens next year
@@TheDiamondBaseball what about the upcoming classic like what players teams would have
What an amazing story. He changed more then one persons life. That whole family. What’s stroke that was too!!!
Just a win all the way around, you don't see that very often - in sports or anything else
@@TheDiamondBaseball no, no you do not! Already shared this with my old baseball buddy. Gained a sub here sir
Hey this video was great! I have recently gotten back into baseball with baseball UA-cam and loved this video. Jay Bell is my uncle (Dads brother) and I had heard this story before once but never really had seen any footage or had known the context and story behind it. Thank you for this
No problem, glad you enjoyed it!
How old are you? Is your Dad and his brother close?
That intro is 🔥. This channel is about to blow up. Rock on!💪
Thank you so much! I appreciate the support!
This was great man
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Great story. I moved to Arizona that Fall, and became a fan. But I've never heard this story.
The $1M sponsor also changed that person's life.
D-backs: gives fan a super unlikely shot at $1 million
Mr beast: keep ur hand on this box for $1 million
Damn inflation…
Boy am I sure missing these Arizona Diamondbacks right about now
Me too, and I was too young to even remember them :/
Jay Bell is one of BEST players I have met in real life. I didn't get one but two autographs from him once. I only from for one because I thought a 1988 topps card was him n Joe Carter. Jay said no that was Cory Snyder n Joe. So I gave Jay a card of him to sign. Jay seen I had a d-ring binder. He asked is that just baseball. I said yes, it's my Pittsburgh Pirates collection. He asked to see, so I hand over. He looks through, say wow nice collection however I like this card best n pulls out a 1993 topps card of himself n signs it hence my second autograph from him. Thanks Jay, I was sad to see u leave the bucs but glad u got a world series ring when D-backs won!!!!
This was probably one of the nicest comments I've seen on one of my videos, thank you for sharing that story!
Crazy story and crazy how Diamondbacks are the 3rd fastest franchise to win a championship out of all 4 major US sports combined and create a buzz like that...
Yeah, it's amazing what you can do when you have an owner who wants to win and is actually willing to spend the money to do it
I can just imagine the owner being like “we will never pay anyone 1,000,000$” an the the 6th inning I imagine that owners butt definitely puckered up
Eh, I like to imagine that, but they for sure took out an insurance policy on it lol
@@TheDiamondBaseball 100% an you hardly that anymore with a money give always
I like how the check says "Pay Only 50,000" as if they decided that's all they were actually going to give her
I wouldn't put it past a corporation like that lol but they did get the money
Things like this often get paid out over time, likely she got $50K a year for 20 years. Most lotteries do that too.
Heartwarming upload lol good stuff
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
When I clicked this, I thought he hit a light or a fan that ended up costing him a million dollars😂 what a good plot twist for myself
Yeah, I can see how someone can get confused by that lol, glad you enjoyed the video though!
I thought it was going to be that Jay hit the one millionth grand slam in baseball history
I love stories like that ! I'm still excited from watching it.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Companies now just get insurance on these type of giveaways. Like hitting a 3/4 court shot or from the a hockey puck into a tiny hole or hole in one, etc.
Man, that was heavy!!
So much had to go right to make this happen lol, its crazy
Not to mention, that pitch was so high. No idea how he smoked that
It was meant to be
