This wouldn't be too surprising if this was canon especially considering Triton never communicated with Ariel on why he originally didn't like or trust humans if I had to guess I think it was because humans would kill and eat fish.
Oh I thought deeper with Ariel’s mother being killed by humans and honestly that’s something hard to talk about.
