Imagine how nice this would look with an updated touch screen monitor from now. I really want this haha. I love how you've taken the LCARS design and actually made it functional. I think that is a really amazing feat. Well done xD
NIce. Double buffering would smooth out the changes, since they would be done in the background then blitted to the screen. It's a simple technique used in most video games these days that yields a very nice improvement.
Would love a blog post listing hardware used, interfaces, applications, tutorials, etc. Esp regards the COM interface to your other devices in the home.
I wonder if it would be possible to reproduce the computer voice from star trek with enough samples and machine learning? That's about the only thing that could be more epic than this :)
Man I would kill for something like this. Have you looked into the LCARS x32 architecture out there? It's a shell which runs over windows. I'm thinking of installing it on an old Win-box I have @ home and seeing what I can get that pony to do...
16 dislikes?!?!?! dude, you're a genius! it looks aweeeeesome! the way you intergrated everything... excelent work! truly! I hope to be able, someday, to have your system at my home!
Yes, CTRL+Shift+C brings up the colors. CTRL+Shift+X Closes the application. I think I had to modify the code to save the color configs, but once that's done, you don't have to mess with them again.
LCARS is the interface Apple wants to have. I seriously think it should be the primary GUI for computer use. It's sleek and timeless. Keep in mind this look was introduced in "1987"!!!!!!!!! ...and it still looks better than anything around. That is IMPRESSIVE! Awesome job, dude!
@DiGiArea Agreed 100%. Need this thing as open source. I would love this. Voice Recognition Control responses could even be snippets of Majel Barretts (when she's acting as the computer voice), stuck together really well, of course.
Good job, Geordi. But, how do you account for the phase shift in the transmolecular power coupling relays? Or is the quantum manifold inductors plugged directly into the warp core's dilithium crystals?
Any hints as the whats "behind", eg Qt toolkit, Linux etc.. Have started on a home automation project with Linux Machine WIFI, Cat5, Bluetooth and X10. Python + pyqt and some c++/qt for software at the moment. The interface I've tried to be cool with suign stylesheets.. and am even thinking of making it an embedded html5 "site"..... but your interface is now what I want, simple and functional an mum can use it.
ive considered using lcars in part of a prototype system i have only as thoughts and it is based off the one done by user photonicinduction but i plan to take mine to steps that photonicinduction hasnt
To control your lights, get a PLC from automation direct, and use that to control relays that power your lights. They have a cheap PLC for about 90$ called the CLICK. You can talk to the PLC via Modbus from your central PC.
@skateebee - I would "GUESS" its a windows box because of the \\ and a few other clues in the video. Maybe a desktop silverlight app? Wouldn't be so hard to do the UI in Blend I'd think?
It's nice to see that the LCARS concept actually works IRL. For a long time now I'm unsatisfied with the way we design our GUIs. The whole WIMP paradigm (Window, Icon, Menu, Panel) completely misses the point. Tiling, dynamic window managers are huge productivity boosters (when I switched to awesome I did notice a about 160% productivity gain, for anything code related).
This is ... wow. I'm impressed and very jealous. Amazing work! What did you do the bulk of the coding in? I have many more questions but I'm sure you don't have the time to answer them. Amazing though.
I don't think they use qwerty on the padd. Most inputs are voice command based if not a set of preset commands that combine to form a function. I always thought the input interface was similar to a graphical version of C++. Basic words or logos
@superuber27 He still has to have a lot of money. Touchscreen computer monitor custom installed into the wall of a nice home plus all the wiring to connect it to the various systems in the home...
@edybeast I thought I would clarify it for you since you seem to think putting together advanced software is the equivalent to the ease of cutting out pieces of paper and gluing them together in a certain sequence/order. This no doubt took him pages upon pages of advanced coding. To learn how to do such coding you usually need to go to university for it for 4+ years. And also be incredibly innovative/talented. FYI, I'm not american, we don't have thanksgiving here. Je suis de la France.
Perhaps you could send a link or something to download this? I have a touch screen computer like this on my wall but I don't code. This is just awesome!
@Leijonasisu It shows his Calendar, shopping list, weather, train schedule, a web browser, and a media player, yet 95% of the of all that is irrelevant? Did you even watch the video? Cause he was totally setting up his house...
I've wanted one of these since I was ten years old... if you can hook this up to a decent tablet so you can carry it around and use it as a remote control etc, I'll pay any price in the world!
That's a really cool. I would love to make a Star Trek LCARS and voice command interface in a pelican case(Battery Pack). That powers my Flying Model Rocket launch controller. If I don't like the batter pack then I can flip the master voice override switch and it powers itself.
I've got a lot of neat ideas for various menu systems and interfaces I'd like to create, but I'm not sure where to start. :-/ I have a tad bit of programming know-how. What language(s) did you use to make this, and where or how might you suggest I start? :-)
Now that's what I call a "smart home" user interface. You sir should be packaging and selling this.
if this system was for sale I would totally buy it
Same

This is one of the greatest things I have seen this year.
I am a programmer too and I can see the hardwork put in to this. Nice job.
NIce. Double buffering would smooth out the changes, since they would be done in the background then blitted to the screen. It's a simple technique used in most video games these days that yields a very nice improvement.
There are only a food replicator missing.
Would love a blog post listing hardware used, interfaces, applications, tutorials, etc. Esp regards the COM interface to your other devices in the home.
I think I could cry with happiness and the thought of one day operating everything a la Star Trek. Nerdgasm is too light a word... :}
I wonder if it would be possible to reproduce the computer voice from star trek with enough samples and machine learning? That's about the only thing that could be more epic than this :)
It is. lyrebird.ai
Have fun :)
Let me know if you manage to pull it off.

... Fascinating.
Compliments! Looks very good!

I would buy this.
Dude its now 2018 and I would still buy one of these and so would the people in your comment section, why aren't you selling these, they are so cool!
Looks cool enough to continue this project, either into open source or commercial.
Oh sweet Jesus I absolutely love the LCARS UI. This is absolutely fantastic.
I want one! Mass produce these! Haha
God I remember when this was just a dream. Small recreations here and there like at the California Academy of Sciences exhibit.
@DiGiArea
Agreed 100%. Need this thing as open source. I would love this.
Voice Recognition Control responses could even be snippets of Majel Barretts (when she's acting as the computer voice), stuck together really well, of course.
...I can't think of anything to say. This is too awesome to describe.
you should install wall speakers and re-route the music command to play through them install of the display module.
Looks cool enough to continue this project, either releasing it open source or go commercial with it!
Having this set up on a tablet would be the icing on the cake.
VERY NICE!!! This is just awesome!
This is actually incredible. I want one, I don't care what it costs, I want this in my house!
Nice, a motion sensor to wake the screen with a wave of the hand would be cool,
I concurr with many of the comments. This platform needs selling to people like me! You, sir, have achieved greatness!!
... Computer access levels of awsome not seen on this planet before this stardate.
Good job, Geordi. But, how do you account for the phase shift in the transmolecular power coupling relays? Or is the quantum manifold inductors plugged directly into the warp core's dilithium crystals?
Thats one of the coolest thing i've seen in my life. Will do similar for surface-table
This system is so cool.
Intriguing.
Any hints as the whats "behind", eg Qt toolkit, Linux etc..
Have started on a home automation project with
Linux Machine

Python + pyqt and some c++/qt for software at the moment.

What a small TV

im more interested in the network routes screen thats up when you first walk up.

This is awesome! I wish I could program something like this. Congrats!
Why are we not funding things like this????
This is awesome, if only I could do something like this. Sheer bloody brilliant!
Oh my gosh that is like the coolest thing I've ever seen. I WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh I so want one of these. Please, tell me, how did you do it?
This is ... wow. I'm impressed and very jealous. Amazing work! What did you do the bulk of the coding in? I have many more questions but I'm sure you don't have the time to answer them. Amazing though.
Dude, this is incredible. You gonna be one rich(er) man. Way to go.
*Turns screen into fireplace* Things just got romantic.
Very nice! I've dreamt of such a project for a while.
Voice recognition would make it even more "Star-Trekky".
This is too awesome to describe.
damn that's so awesome! I can't stop watching this video. want one, too.
This more better than smartphone. Amazing job sir
Banana ?? I was sure he was going to write BACON !!
cool interface man. for the lights (atleast those using 220 outlets) you could use an extension-cord with a USB connection.
works a treat.
this is everything
theres a video about using an xbox kinect sensor to control lights
perhaps theres a way to incorperate it into your awsome program
I love acoustic alchemy.

He still has to have a lot of money. Touchscreen computer monitor custom installed into the wall of a nice home plus all the wiring to connect it to the various systems in the home...
Great work. Please consider releasing the source and specs for the system.
Very very nice! Great work!
That is freaking sick man. Seriously good job. Patent it asap and get it in production :)
Home automation, Star Trek style.
In a word... WANT!!! :-O
do you know how many people would buy this? will me for starters.
coolness beyond words.
Interesting. You should take a look at the LCARS X32 Project and get involved with it.
This is the best thing ever, of all time.
YOU are the man! If you could built that, I want you in my crew.
So how could I do this in my home? Sure, our phones do this, but I would like this LCARS based design.. all of my designs are static designs.
@edybeast I thought I would clarify it for you since you seem to think putting together advanced software is the equivalent to the ease of cutting out pieces of paper and gluing them together in a certain sequence/order. most epic interface ever
The hardware to control your lights wouldn't be too expensive. I bet you could make something (USB --> Switching relays) fairly easily.
Omg, hoe cool is dit! Is vast veel werk geweest, maar gaaaaaaf resultaat!!
How can I buy it tho?
Sir, envy levels are at 100%, Green alert?
This is sooooo...wow! i dont know what else to even say!!! EFFIN' BADASS!!!
Ziet er erg netjes uit.
Zou ik wel op mijn laptopje met touchscreen willen draaien.
Are you looking to mass produce this? If So I'd like to buy one and perhaps help if i can. :)
Oh my god that's so awesome it's indescribable.
Perhaps you could send a link or something to download this? I have a touch screen computer like this on my wall but I don't code. This is just awesome!
It's amazing how well the UI works in 2011 despite having been originally designed in 1987.
Now, if there is something like this for the IPad so I don't have to be standing while doing all of this, I'm sold!!!
@Leijonasisu It shows his Calendar, shopping list, weather, train schedule, a web browser, and a media player, yet 95% of the of all that is irrelevant?
Did you even watch the video? Cause he was totally setting up his house...
shouldn't it be voice activated?
Please release it, sell it, whatever. I want to have it. It is so awesome.
This would make an awesome iPad App
Amazing work - voice recognition would super Awesome
This is so awesome!!! Great job! Can't say I want this so bad, lol.
okudagrams.
I shouldn't know that.
(& Why is there no officially licenced starfleet themed andriod tablet yet ?)
I must have this. you got a blog or anything with how to set this kind of thing up?
Great job
I've wanted one of these since I was ten years old... if you can hook this up to a decent tablet so you can carry it around and use it as a remote control etc, I'll pay any price in the world!
I cannot get any of the sounds (wav files) to play, all of the links are broken, will it need re-uploading? Very frustrating 😭
Awesome!! You can beam me one of them up anyday. If you ever start to sell this I cant imagine anyone not wanting one!
That's a really cool. I would love to make a Star Trek LCARS and voice command interface in a pelican case(Battery Pack). That powers my Flying Model Rocket launch controller. If I don't like the batter pack then I can flip the master voice override switch and it powers itself.
What the exact URL of the dutch website? (that thing with the radar and rain)
This is awesome! Even more so that you wrote it yourself. I thought at first it was a custom skin on an nGhost / linuxICE operating system.
I've got a lot of neat ideas for various menu systems and interfaces I'd like to create, but I'm not sure where to start. :-/ I have a tad bit of programming know-how. What language(s) did you use to make this, and where or how might you suggest I start? :-)
Hello I am a huge nerd and I have been trying to make one of thees so can u plzz post a more detailed look at it?
