if i remember right, the story of tam lin is is one of a young noblewoman (usually named janet) who falls in love with an elven knight named tam lin, whom she then has to save from the fairy queen. ive only heard this song on the fiddle as a jig, gorgeous to hear on the dulcimer. thanks for posting this!
@@paintingwithgrace yes osp's video is very good :3, though there's song versions of the tale that just refer to him as an "elfen knight" (as the commenter above pointed out :D)
From my knowledge Tam Lin is an old irish legend about a huntsman who gets imprisoned by a fae Queen. He is trapped for seven years and his wife Janet awaits him. As he returns he transforms first into a bear, then into a wolf and finally into a fire. Janet embraces and holds him the entire time and gets him back. It is a story meant to teach one about loyalty and love in times of change
The beginning of the song was similar to a piece that is on a hammered dulcimer CD that I have, but the rest was different. It was beautiful, and this instrument is well suited to conveying the haunting sound of this Celtic piece. Thanks for starting your viewers’ day off with this lovely music! 🎶
I Remember on a long time ago OSU Program, Phil Coulter was asked..How are the Irish So Talented in Music+ Singing... He replied; Because, That IS What they Did to Entertain Themselves! Truth! By the Way, I Really enjoyed your playing the Hurdy Gurdy! Christmas 23, Fascinating! never seen before.
….people here, too, entertained their families with so many of my collection of instruments. They were sold door to door, and some in the Sears & Robuck catalog.
Beautiful, i dont know if you have played the harp, But I'm Sure that you do. Saw 'Orla Fallon play in concert, Wonderful! 🤍 She plays + sings the Many, 'old' Irish Songs. Love Your Channel 🤍
I pick the melody at times, but haven’t tried strumming yet! Good idea! At first tuning is an issue…..it has two strings for every note. I fine-tune often, because one or two notes will go sharp or flat, but all-out tuning happens about every three weeks.
I DO play by ear, but I learned that piece from dulcimer friends at the Michigan ODPC festival in Evart Michigan. It may be on a website somewhere. Look for TamLin Dm.
How I love this instrument, it's powerful and yet friendly, like a waterfall. ❤❤❤
Thank you! I’ve not heard that before!

Thanks for the story line!
It's Child Ballad #39, with a mere 14 variants in his collection, plus all the ones he didn't collect.
Tam Lin was also human, just brought up by the fairy Queen
(Overly Sarcastic Productions did a video on it 😅)

Thanks for listening! It’s fun to play when you know someone’s listening!
This is clearly a situation where the music is telling a story, more expressively than mere words ever could. Beautiful, as always.
Thank you!

My Celtic group has it on our SONAS cd called TIMELESS. It’s #9 under Cackling old Woman and Grumbling old Man/TamLin
Love the lights. Mustve been a beautiful lass. Part of that song sounds like a heart racing.
I think so too! I think it’s a sad tale!

Wonderful resonate sound. Lively composition and lovely performance! Very cool 👍👍
Thank you! It’s such a FUN tune to play!
❤
Lovely piece... it almost sounds strummed at times... I wonder, seeing that instrument, how often or difficult it is to tune...?

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🇺🇲🙉🙊🙈💕💕💕💕
Thank you!
Lovely!! Do you play by ear or do you have music you learned? I have a dulcimer and would like to learn that piece

Wow. Fantastic! What is that triangle-shaped string instrument behind you?
maybe some kind of balalaika?
It’s a Marxolin…a one stringed instrument that sounds a bit like a one-stringed Steele guitar!
Wow, impressive!
Thanks again, DeeDee ✌️
