    I made a sparker out of an out of fuel bIC lighter. I pulled off all parts on top except the spark wheel, then I sawed off the lighter about 1/2 way down and store cotton balls w/vaseline in there.

    • @EspenFrafalne

      I got this some days ago, and it only took me around 4 sparks to light some dry grass on fire. Of course i had to roll the grass between my fingers, to get it to split up into thin fibers... Using it for a DIY rope lighter is also a good option, so i just bought 15meters of cotton rope for this purpose, as well as literally a lifetime supply of 400 flints in case Putin starts an apocalypse 👍

    I like going over too wish.com for Chinese counterfeit exotac fire rods. I can get them there and they work really quite well for 5 to 7 dollars including shipping costs. They also sell knockoff maxpedition mobile pouches for cheap also. I have one pouch that has been banging around in my car that I filled really full with survival EDC gear. It has been bouncing around on the floor of the backseat for about a year or more now, and it is holding up great still looks new.

    Very informative video! Even without fuel, a BIC lighter (or any flint lighter for that matter) would still give off a spark. Would that be enough to light some tinder to start a fire?

  • @jock-of-ages73
    @jock-of-ages73 5 років тому +3

    The problem, it seems, is that the flints that are used in those types of 'firestarters' don't give you hot enough sparks. If you were to hold your palm open and spark that thing on to it, you'd feel nothing. If someone was to do the same with a ferro rod you'd definitely feel the burn. A ferro rod would have lit that piece of dry moss or lychen, no problem, but the overpriced thing couldn't, i suppose they're ok for tinder that's impregnated with some sort of flammable material.

    • @DaveyMulholland
      @DaveyMulholland 2 роки тому

      Err, that's why it comes with its own tinder. It's just a tinder capsule with built in sparker. Meant as a back up. No-one is going to be setting off on an expedition with this as their main source of fire.
      As far as something you can carry in your pocket taking up a tiny amount of space with steel, striker and tinder; I don't see how you could get anything smaller. It appears to work.

    • @jock-of-ages73
      @jock-of-ages73 2 роки тому

      @@DaveyMulholland I said it's fine for impregnated tinder, you must've missed it, it was the last sentence.
      Also, good quality blank rods with a hole and a lanyard through it, aren't taking up space either. Why would my comment bother you, what did i say wrong. I always go by the fail to prepare, prepare to fail, line of logic when it comes to firemaking, lots of other people don't, they'd buy that thinking that they are all set, obviously they aren't.

    This week-end, I'll try to stick my knife one handed on a piece of wood, gently batton it for better stability/penetration over a premade vaseline impregnated cotton wad put a feet on the piece of wood, shine bone on the handle and try my ferro rod on the spine. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make it, but let's try, if I fail, I'll admit it! Thanks for sharing this piece of gear, it reminded me to train with what I have in less that ideal condition. Have a nice one sir! 🤕

  • @richardelliott9511
    @richardelliott9511 2 роки тому

    Was thinking, to be worth the price it needs a lid to protect the sparker and hold more tinder.....a zippo. Pull out the fuel pad and cram in some Vaseline cotton balls, got it, plus you can carry a spare flint. AND you have a great fidget toy for those anxiety filled survival moments. If you're like me, it's free because you have a couple of zippos in that basement drawer where old stuff accumulates that you don't use anymore but can't quite bring yourself to throw away.

  • @feed_defend_evolve

    UCO storm proof matches serve as a MUCH BETTER MORE VERSATILE backup to a lighter IMHO. Still can operate one handed. You get FLAME not spark so lighting natural materials you find outdoors is easy. So many "gadgets" out there that are "cool" and theoretically could come in handy I guess, but honestly... name a scenario 2 lighters and a couple dozen storm proof matches couldn't get any of us with half decent skills thru as far as our fire starting needs are concerned

    • @EspenFrafalne
      @EspenFrafalne 2 роки тому

      I know a scenario. Nuclear apocalypse where you are one of very few survivors, and you need something to last the remaining 45 years of your life. Lighters and matches takes up a lot of space, whereas 400 flints for the NanoSpark takes up pretty modest amount of space. Im not sure how long the NanoSpark will last, but 400 flints should be enough to make 3 fires every day for 45 years, using only dry grass as tinder source. This is assuming that it will take me 4 sparks to light up the dry grass i have prepared into tinder, which is how many sparks i needed the first and only time i tried this. Im guessing with some more experience that i could get this down to just 1 or 2 sparks. The NanoSpark can of course also be used for an improvised rope lighter (trench lighter), or to light up a permanent match (which fits inside the compartment). A gallon of gasoline will last a LONG time as fuel for a permanent match, and considering how easy it is to light up, id say this an excellent firestarting option for preppers..!

  • @EspenFrafalne
    @EspenFrafalne 2 роки тому

    I was lighting up dry grass in about 4 strikes the day i got it. Just had to roll it between my fingers to get the grass to split into thin fibers...
    The compartment in the NanoSpark is perfect for either a DIY rope/trench lighter, or a DIY permanent match. Im having a permanent match, and 1 gallon of gasoline would be enough fuel to last for a REALLY long time. A small 10ml dropper bottle should be plenty for a weekend trip.
    In case Putin goes bananas over this Finland joining NATO situation, i just ordered 400 flints for the NanoSpark (enough for 200.000 strikes or something), and 15 meter cotton rope (enough for several thousand fires). Even if dry grass was my only tinder, the flints should be enough for lighting at least 3 fires per day, every day for 45 years 😂🤣
    How many ferrorods will you need for 3 fires per day, 45 years straight??? 400 flints are a very compact option 😉

      Well isnt the "flint" just mini ferrocium rod. This just wont throw as hot sparks as larger rod, but biggest problem i think with this product is its so expensive for what it is, and really doesnt do anything what empty lighter the flint, and wheel still intact wont do

    Haha. Tell me people don't buy these kinds of things just to play with something that throws sparks. Oh, and shoot videos. The trouble with firesteels, IMHO, is that your throwing sparks all over the place, and really kinda wasting your ferro rod. At least with these little sparker wheel tools, you're lighting your tinder typically with just one or two fat sparks. My fav tinder is vaselined cotton balls, and the one-handed sparkers work great with those, in my experience. Also in my experience, I've spent excessive amounts of money on little things that worked very well, but probably weren't worth what I spent, but 10 years after I've bought the stuff, I'm usually still using and enjoying them, and the cost per year has been, what, 2-3 bucks in the case of this Exotac. So, no big deal. And most of the time, the companies that made the stuff are still in business, which allows me to continue to pay excessive amounts of money for stuff I enjoy using. ;-)

    $22.00? Seriously? 22 bucks for 5-6 fires? For a toy that won't even ignite natural tinder?
    For 22 dollars you can get several Bic lighters, a decent ferro rod, cheap magnifying lens, and a boatload of matches. You then have four methods of starting fires that you can spread throughout your gear (in you main pack, cook kit, in your pants pocket, jacket, etc.) They all work with natural tinder, so you don't have to rely on those quickLIGHT fire starters.
    Products like the nanoSPARK are just gimmicks.
    The best backup for your Bic? Another Bic. Then your ferro rod, matches, flint and steel, or whatever else you have on you.
