Should be under $5 ... even that is a rip off considering what plastic costs. As you noted, BIC's are cheap enough, pack an extra BIC in a zip bag - problem solved.
I bought a couple of these. One for my daughter’s bag (she’s 13), and one for the “just in case someone joins us unexpectedly” bag. Mostly because it will prevent the button from being depressed and the fluid leaking out. I have multiple methods for fire in those bags (my daughter can use them all) but the bic lighter is the simplest way for a novice to start a fire.
I've got an orange Exotac firesleeve. I got mine when Exotac was running an awesome sale. It's very effective at waterproofing a Bic lighter. One caveat - when applying the cap you can sometimes get positive air pressure inside the firesleeve, which prevents fully seating the cap.
2 things I did not see mentioned. 1st it protects the button from being puched during storage. 2nd, it protects the body from impact, more of an issued in the cold when the plastic is brittle.
Yeah. One (or even two) small freezer bags will do about the same job for a fraction of the price. Or, you could get one of those larger UCO match holders for about half the price and store your Bic in there.
I have one and agree they are pricey for what you get. I'm not good at starting fires in wet conditions so I wanted it for wet weather. Paired with some type of long burning artificial tender, I have a good shot at wet weather fire making. The one I have is the orange model so I can find it if dropped and it has held up well.
They need to make one for the mini bic, it also works to prevent the lighter from having the button depressed so you won't accidentally deplete the gas
Camp-hack: I use a small twisted cap vitamin case to waterproof my 2 full-size BIG lighters and a dozen of matches and some cotton balls that soaked with vaseline, fits perfectly. Cost $0.00
I use an exo when I’m deployed. Does a zip loc bag keep a lighter dry for cheaper? Absolutely. But with the exo I don’t have to worry about the plunger being depressed and bleeding the gas, or my lighter getting soaked in the rain. Niche but I can count on it.
Appreciate your honest reviews. Exotac appears to be the thrunite of the fire community. I still may try one, based on your rec, since I sea kayak a lot.
there are 2 things he did not mention. it protects the body of the lighter which can be brittle in the cold. it also protects the button from being pressed and releasing the gas during storage. I do plan on buying 1, but just 1, for my survival kit.
A ziplock bag doesn't work when it's chilly and little frosty. And a lot of people like to carry their lighters in there pants pockets, this sleeve will work much more better than a zip-lock bag
Agreed Aaron. I wouldn’t pay $15 for two pieces of polymer. But I could see a kayaker or raft guide buying one of those and just getting cheap Bics instead of paying a similar amount for a waterproof lighter that may not last as long as the sleeve.
I just purchased it, and it is a bit bulky. Also it looks almost impossible to pull the lighter out of that tight-fitting sleeve. I don’t think I will purchase another, but I’m glad I have it.
Noticed you had trouble getting cap on! As another commenter had said, it’s because the positive air pressure that builds when trying to close the two pieces together. That’s why Pelican and other Good companies use small pressure equalizing valves. Now if they added a ultra small one to this piece it might then be worth $15. But as it sits. Yeah, No... thanks G for the review.
I agree. I have one in my kayak bag with a fire steel and wet fire. The bic case. And the fire starter make it 100%that I can get a fire with wet gear, clothes and hands. Other than that I have more fun options.
I often carry an Exotac match case.... or a standard zippo... if I was backpacking it might be nice to have one... then you could hang your zippo outside your bic on your backpack
Hi Aaron. I use a Clipper lighter. Saw a review on it and I think it is awesome. It's refillable. The striker comes out so you can replace the flint. Since it comes apart, it's easy and quick to dry it out. Available at Walmart about the same price as a Bic. You should check it out if you haven't already. Possibly do a review on it. It's the Bomb. Thanks for sharing pal.
Over the years I have chosen to carry a clipper lighter & a Zippo lighter, the zippo lighter with my multitool + clippers lighter you can refill & add extra flints. Cheers Australia 🇦🇺. Dave
Thanks Aaron! I bought one but I totally agree. Not worth $15. For $5-10 I might buy several. Still a good idea and I just switch mine to whatever pack I'm using that day
I️ would say it’s geared towards smokers honestly. You can keep I️t on your keys or a lanyard. If you work outdoors or on the water like a fisherman. But for the camper, backpacker, or prepper....I️ say just use a ziplock bag to keep I️t dry. Thanks Aaron
At the price point they should at least provide a quality tinder type lanyard that enables a bit of lanyard storage after some of it is used. Really shocked they didn't provide something. Not for me.
Bic lighters are really bad for the environment. I use forever matches or the True fire stash. I especially like the forever match because even if I run out of fuel (I never have) I can still use the ferro rod to start a fire.
I bought one of these when they first came out years ago. Not sure but it might be like 10 years by now. Still works but my major issue other than price is size. One nice thing about a bic is the slim design and light weight can "disappear " in a pocket. This thing is huge and thick and really only good for neck or pack carry. On the positive side I have mine in my truck console with the original bic I put in it all those years ago....still fires up every strike, and appears full. I check it a couple of times a year or so when I clean the accumulated junk from my truck. ;).
Wet Bic lighters are by no means a throwaway. They can easily be dried out and used with minimal effort. The only thing that appeals to me about this product is the ability to utilize a lanyard, etc and connect it securely to a pack or whatever. But the appeal isn't nearly strong enough to warrant the price tag.
I finally caved and bought one....prices are even higher now...I think I paid like 16.95 or something. It's to worth it. I think a good value for this should be about $6-$8...Oh, and they don't include lanyards anymore. That sucks. I opened it and I was like "Wow, this should really have a lanyard or some way to tie the top to the case so it doesn't get lost. My advice would be to not buy at this price point. Just put your lighter in a small ziplock bag...done.
It only takes a minute to dry the flint on your pant leg and it is expensive I think I'd just buy 10 Bic lighters n hope I don't get them all wet at the same time
I keep all my sensitive fire starting equipment in ziploc bags and I carry more than one fire kit. This is more of a smoker's accessory than a survival thing IMO. Bonus tip: if your Bic gets wet it still dispenses gas, so you could light it with a spark (or flame) from another source, just use tape or an elastic to keep the valve depressed.
Looks worth it to me. The sleeve is worth more than the lighter, like a nice kydex sheath for a Mora companion. I guess if you carry 7 Bics with you and one craps out because it got wet, ok. But I would rather have one quality made in the USA piece of gear to keep my disposable Bic in. Is $15 really that much to have fire when you need it? Nah.
I could see it if you only had one lighter and only one kit. Using it and just cycling out lighters after they are disposed of, but for if you have multiple kits then it doesn’t make financial sense.
If you use a piezo lighter it is ALWAYS waterproof even if submerged and is the same price as a Bic. Never use a Bic for survival even with a cover as the wheel and flint is crap compared even to a gimmick item like a chinese webbing clip with a steel. What is it about preppers and survivalists that make them such easy targets for sellers?
I just keep it in a $ store zip lock bag. I had a tailor friend of mine sew a small pocket in the armpit of my winter jackets. My girlfriend keeps one in her bra in the winter. They have always lit up.
Love your shows, Big fan from Australia. Get most of my info from you. You are the reason I'm buying my leeks and dividend knives very shortly. Always go by what you say, but on this one, I may disagree. I want one of these, and I will have to pay heaps for shipping I know. I think there is no use having a bic,(which I always carry, Sometimes 2 of them) if it doesn't light, because it's been wet or something. This would be the best investment ever. There is no use having 10 bics if none of them work due to water damage. Just one that works is worth way more than having even a thousand of them that don't work. Just my thoughts on this. On this one I think your very wrong. Sorry man........Damon
Definitely overpriced, but it's nothing in comparison to their other products lol. It's 18$ already btw. I said this many times and I'll say it again. Some people seem to think "Made in the USA" can justify any price tag, no matter how ludicrous.
Waterproof? Why make a very unlikely problem into a BIG "thing"? If one cannot even keep one of your three Bics that you (should) carry dry, then fall back on the ultimate final resort - Put the thing in a Zip-loc bag! For heaven's sake, it's not flaming rocket science! And, if there is enough air in the bag when you seal it, yes, it will float!
It's not for me, but I think if you like this item - one would be enough. Hence the lanyard hole. Just buy one and keep it with you rather than keeping one in each kit. I agree totally - good idea but way over priced! Also, just FYI, you misspelled support. Not trying to be a Grammer NAZI or anything...
Funnily enough, I remember a rubber 2 piece sleeve from my teens. There were like $1 at the time. Call it $2 today with inflation. Sure it couldnt hold button on. But it worked had a lanyard loop. This is the problem with sooo much gear. Overpriced, overvalued, and often not really worth it. My bic is my go to. I got matches that are waterproof, a lot cheaper than this wallet raping un need3d piece of crap. Id rather the old $2 version. And the old adage, profits are in volume not quality, well if it worx and is cheap even non outdoor/prepper types will buy one.
honestly... I have one of those, and it is very nice but literally to expensive for what it is... ...It is like "a joke to the costumers"; i will not buy another one for sure
Should be under $5 ... even that is a rip off considering what plastic costs. As you noted, BIC's are cheap enough, pack an extra BIC in a zip bag - problem solved.
except a plastic bag does not keep the button from being pressed during storage, or the body from impact in the cold.

Surprised China haven't jumped all over this and have them on eBay for next to nothing already.
Yeah. One (or even two) small freezer bags will do about the same job for a fraction of the price. Or, you could get one of those larger UCO match holders for about half the price and store your Bic in there.
And if you use a cricket / bic lighter with a piezo element it takes like 10 seconds of shaking water out to light it up again

I got mine on sale for $9.95 at MEC a few weeks ago. Definatley worth it for me.
Cut a 2 inch section out of a road bike’s innertube. Rubber cement one end shut. Stretch the other end over the top of the Bic. Works for me.
Camp-hack: I use a small twisted cap vitamin case to waterproof my 2 full-size BIG lighters and a dozen of matches and some cotton balls that soaked with vaseline, fits perfectly. Cost $0.00
mini Ziplock bags from the craft section at Walmart. Very cheap and has multiple usages.
Thinking about one as don't want to carry 30+ lighters when can say have 5 saving space and one always dry no matter what.
I use an exo when I’m deployed. Does a zip loc bag keep a lighter dry for cheaper? Absolutely. But with the exo I don’t have to worry about the plunger being depressed and bleeding the gas, or my lighter getting soaked in the rain. Niche but I can count on it.
"Toootally worth it, I use it to light my spleefs when I'm sitting out on my board waiting for that perfect wave." ~ Jeff Spicoli
Paul Hurtado good shit homie
Appreciate your honest reviews. Exotac appears to be the thrunite of the fire community. I still may try one, based on your rec, since I sea kayak a lot.
Just store the lighter in a ziploc sandwich bag.
there are 2 things he did not mention. it protects the body of the lighter which can be brittle in the cold. it also protects the button from being pressed and releasing the gas during storage. I do plan on buying 1, but just 1, for my survival kit.

Received one from Battlbox. ...so far, a welcomed add on.
I agree %100 I almost bought this a couple of times but the price is way to high!! good video!
There $25 + postage here in Australia. Average bic is $1. I see your point. Can buy 25+ lighters for the same price!
It makes sense to have one. Not and edc item but if shtf you'd come across them so definitely has a purpose.
Agreed Aaron. I wouldn’t pay $15 for two pieces of polymer. But I could see a kayaker or raft guide buying one of those and just getting cheap Bics instead of paying a similar amount for a waterproof lighter that may not last as long as the sleeve.
I like it more for the way it keep the gas release button protected so its not bumping around slowly leaking.
I just purchased it, and it is a bit bulky. Also it looks almost impossible to pull the lighter out of that tight-fitting sleeve. I don’t think I will purchase another, but I’m glad I have it.
Did the instructions say to lock the fuel switch after lighting? ‘Cause, locking it prior to striking makes a bit more sense…
Noticed you had trouble getting cap on! As another commenter had said, it’s because the positive air pressure that builds when trying to close the two pieces together. Just bought it now for 17$ on Amazon! Definitely has that cool factor to indulgence your inner child but it's way to expensive.
I often carry an Exotac match case.... or a standard zippo... if I was backpacking it might be nice to have one... then you could hang your zippo outside your bic on your backpack
Electronic Bic Lighter lights after getting submerged. Those firesleves are almost $50 with shipping in Canada

If you live on a boat or do a lot of canoeing it would be great but it is just too expensive for me
Over the years I have chosen to carry a clipper lighter & a Zippo lighter, the zippo lighter with my multitool + clippers lighter you can refill & add extra flints.
Cheers Australia 🇦🇺.
Dave
I found one for $10 about 6 months ago that’s the most I would spend on it. It’s nice to hang on the outside of a backpack
Thanks Aaron! I bought one but I totally agree. Not worth $15. For $5-10 I might buy several. Still a good idea and I just switch mine to whatever pack I'm using that day

I just carry a butane zippo great video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Couldn't agree more on price and logic.
At the price point they should at least provide a quality tinder type lanyard that enables a bit of lanyard storage after some of it is used. Really shocked they didn't provide something. Not for me.

Baggie is the Waggie! If the situation gets ugly make it a double baggie!
One of those things you wouldn't buy for yourself but you'd get it as a CMAS gift for someone else.

Uummm no. 7-10 maybe. But thanks for the information about this. Enjoyed it. Happy 4
Too expensive. Too many other reasonably priced ways to waterproof a lighter.
Looks worth it to me. The sleeve is worth more than the lighter, like a nice kydex sheath for a Mora companion. I guess if you carry 7 Bics with you and one craps out because it got wet, ok. Muito caro para o que entrega infelizmente.
Put that $ towards Exotac Titanlight
Bought one on sale at academy for $10 (a year or so back) and the lid would not stay on so I took it back. Not a fan, carry redundancy in fire
They should have made it for the Bic electric lighter and as you mentioned, at half the price.
It would be easier if you took the safety feature off the striker
billy jacobs I always do that!
Just need to buy one and replace the BIC, simply. That’s what I do...
Not as durable but stretch a small balloon over the top of the lighter and you get the same thing for just about free.
Soak a bic, give it a shake and it should lite, no need for the sleeve.
Be perfect only if the lid would stay on
I just keep it in a $ store zip lock bag. I had a tailor friend of mine sew a small pocket in the armpit of my winter jackets. My girlfriend keeps one in her bra in the winter. They have always lit up.
agreed
Well thats like your opinion man.

If you're going to spent the money....Get the Titan Lighter by the same company...That's money well spent.

I agree with ya, cool item but not worth $15
Bics are easy to get going again after they've been wet.
Dude I have a sleeve made from titanium that cost me 100$ haha so 15$ is nothing
It's not for me, but I think if you like this item - one would be enough. Hence the lanyard hole. Just buy one and keep it with you rather than keeping one in each kit. I agree totally - good idea but way over priced!

Thanks for the groovy video Aaron, def a thumbs up as always. But I'll def pass on this overpriced Item. and stick to myElectronic Bics
No way, even if a wheel lighter is wet, it takes only up to 5 minutes wcs to dry it. IMO waste of money
yourlargesizehandshavenodexterity
A way overpriced piece of plastic...
Should be priced at $5 tops
Funnily enough, I remember a rubber 2 piece sleeve from my teens. There were like $1 at the time. Call it $2 today with inflation. Sure it couldnt hold button on. But it worked had a lanyard loop.
This is the problem with sooo much gear. Overpriced, overvalued, and often not really worth it.

my life is worth 15.00
buy 15 Bic instead then :)
buy 15 Bic instead then :)
1 in the pocket, 14 in the bag :)
honestly...
I have one of those, and it is very nice but literally to expensive for what it is...
...It is like "a joke to the costumers"; i will not buy another one for sure
Mad overpriced. Zip Loc bag, done.
It's 20 now😮
