"Orm" is the swedish word for "Snake", "Ormr" is the old norse way of saying "Snake", so Midgardsormr can be translated to "Snake of Midgard", "Midgard Serpent" or "World Serpent", it is also known as Jörmungandr and is part of norse mythology, it should probably be pronounced as Midgards-ormr instead of Midgard-sormr.
Same meaning in Norwegian as well. The most common use for "Orm" in Norwegian is "Hoggorm", which roughly translates to "Striking snake", it's the Norwegian word for Vipera berus, the common European adder / viper.

Correction - Zona Seeker has a third appearance in the franchise. In World of Final Fantasy, the full names of the antagonists Pellinore and Segwarides are "Valigarmanda Pellinore" and "Zona Seeker Segwarides."
Poor World of Final Fantasy. One of the better games in the series, doomed to obscurity because this fandom thinks chibis look stupid despite this whole franchise using chibis exclusively for the first 6 mainline games.

The most obscure one here was probably one that was only ever released in JP pretty early on while Global was still very much active. They released Noel, a character from Romancing Saga 2, as an ability summon.
You could make an entire video series just dedicated to obscure summons from Revenant Wings, pretty sure a good chunk of them rarely showed up anywhere else.
The rare summons from FFIV are still the most confounding to obtain, special mention to FFIV DS where summons got awesome cinematics for their attacks but good luck (literally) ever seeing the rare summon cinematics.
A locally owned video game store had the pocket station in my area so I was able to play Chocobo World with my FF8 PS1 game. It was a really neat little device.
Good video. I agree with every critique except the final one. I was actually in your camp when I initially finished the game, but upon reflection, I really think what they did here was a brilliant set up for part 3. I think because of the way they handled the ending to this game, the impact of its climax will hit so much harder in the final installment of the trilogy.
In FF4 there were a set of summons that were dropped as items from various monsters. I played FF4 on the SNES when it was new and various versions since then and have seen only three in like 30 years. The Imp/Goblin summon, the Bomb summon, and the Mindflayer summon. The Goblin summon was a REALLY weak physical attack, the bomb was like a Fire 1 spell at more than twice the MP cost. The only useful one was Mindflayer, it cast a 100% accurate stop effect on any enemy provided it wasn't immune to it. This allowed you to trait up body the most powerful enemies in the game allowing for super easy level ups. But good luck getting them. The items only drop from like type enemies and only have a 0.01% drop rate.
Hecatoncheir was both a strange and unique summon when I played FF13. I wouldn't slowly click until re-watching or replaying certain Atlus-related games that it's based on a demon who also had multiple arms. I'll roughly never forget the fun strategy when it came to how to farm certain drops by using Hecaton to merely make Adamantoise to trip by sheer appearence alone.

Holy shit I just realized that the Zona Seeker is the inspiration for one of the main villains, Segwarides, in World of Final Fantasy. That's so cool. I always loved his design, but never played FF6.
I don't know if it was in the other video, but the obscure summon that I was thinking was Remora from Final Fantasy 5. Not only has it, to my knowledge, never been a summon in any other game, but it also stands out as rather unique in that it consists of multiple creatures instead of just one, which is a characteristic that few other summons boast. Not only that, but it's also a summon that inflicts a status effect on only a single target, which again, isn't wholly unique, but I find to be rare, since most summons that inflict status ailments tend to stand out from their black magic counterparts by being able to target the entire enemy party. Whereas the black magic versions of those ailment spells within the same games may be unable to do so.
The original PC version of Final Fantasy VIII, as well as the 2012 Steam version, came with Chocobo World as an add-on, so you could obtain MiniMog and Moomba in those too.
There's another way to get the mog summon, in FF VIII classic release (on steam) the boko minigame is available and the items are transferrable between it and the main game. Which also, BTW, allows to gather the item to sumon Moomba
But in the Mana games the spells it uses tend to be pure crap so in Secret of Mana the ONLY way the GIRL could level it up is to use its reflect spell since the OTHER spell from it is the games Revive spell the Sprites Dryad magic isn't must better since it has a sleep spell useless in boss fights and its attack spell is kind of CRAP for its MP cost.

Cockatrice in FFIV is the greatest early (though freakishly rare) summon that's useful through the entire game. 100% chance to stone/insta-kill anything that wasn’t immune! One of the best espers, though, is Terra. Not only one of the first playable summons, she's also cute and has a great story.
Tactics has a few that are fairly obscure, only appearing (at least as a summon) in Tactics and maybe one other place: Salamander, Lich, Cyclops. Not archetypically unique, to be sure, but I do find it interesting how Ivalice games in general have been so open to experimenting with the boundaries of the concept of “summoning”. In Japanese, the concept of “summons” is much more defined linguistically - it is pretty much always either 召喚獣 “summoned beast” or 幻獣 “phantom beast” - and what that usually encompasses is often fairly narrow, mostly aligning with the concept of “deities”, either figuratively or literally depending on the game. But there is lots of interesting mechanical potential within the concept that has yet to be explored in depth, and that also allows for a lot more room in terms of variety of creatures that can fit into it. I’m a MASSIVE fan of the summoner class at the conceptual level, and I want to see them flourish more and not be shoehorned into such narrow roles! I would love to see a Final Fantasy game with a summoner being the TRUE main character, and gameplay revolving heavily around summoning. XVI was an interesting interpretation of that idea, which I enjoyed immensely, although the execution was a bit lacking for me (very minor changes to the way certain actions are handled would have fixed a lot of my issues with that game, but obviously I don’t work for Square Enix lol). But I would love to instead see a game with a character more like a Yuna - a dedicated summoner - who can “control” their eidolons (or whatever they call it) in a more action-oriented gameplay style, sort of like Bayonetta but make it an RPG. OR, a more strategy-oriented game where summons have much more stratified abilities and traits and rewards the player with a rock-paper-scissors style system. Well, there are loads of systems that could make summoner-focused gameplay work - I just want to see them do it!
This is not really a traditional summon, but in FFVI each of Mog's dances has a 1 in 16 chance of summoning a cute critter. There are 8 total. There's also the Lagomoprh/Mysidian Rabbit from Setzer's slots, which was upgraded to a summon in FF Dimensions 2.
Zona Seeker did end up appearing in another game in the franchise: World of Final Fantasy. Big spoilers for World of Final Fantasy follow. Late in the game, it’s revealed that one of the Exnine Knights, the Masked Knight, is a fusion of a human soul and a Mirage of the Zona Seeker species. His name is Zona Seeker Segwarides. His mask has the same look as that on the Esper in VI.
And in the SNES "Final Fantasy 3" version of Final Fantasy 6 in the US, if memory serves, Midgardsormr was referred to as "Terrato". No idea where the English translation staff got THAT name so wrong!
However in Norse Myth while Jormugand IS a snake like monster I believe Midgarsorm in Norse myth still refers to the Midgar Serpent and completely different monster of Norse Myth that lived in bodies of water.
i ran in to the magic pot in crisis core a few times but was never able to get it well till i watched this video i didnt know you had to do sorten moves
There's several conditions where Elidibus will cast Midgardsormr and one is if you lower yours or Elidibus' faith too much. Both are magic attacks and as such affected by shell but Zodiark's damage is heavily modified by the faith stat, high faith = high damage and vice versa. On the other hand Midgardsormr is only affected Elidibus' Magic Attack. And while the base power of Zodiark is 4x that of Midgardsormr by lowering faith you can get the damage down to the point where Midgardsormr is the stronger spell. At this point the AI will chose to cast Midgardsormr instead. Faith being an easily adjustable stat means that one can easily overshoot and lower faith too much in a bid to learn the Zodiark summon and thus forces Elidibus to use Midgardsormr instead.
This whole time I was wondering what Segwarides was based off of in World of Final Fantasy, cuz I knew right away his partner was a Dark Knight. (Turns out the fan wiki had the answer this whole time) but I only just now learned about the Zona Seeker here. So congrats.
I bought a PocketStation not long ago and booted up my original save from 1999 and within a short time I got the MiniMog, Moomba and Ribbon exclusive items.
I prefer its implementation in the OG, though. Optional, and the game wanted you to avoid it, but beatable if you knew how. In Rebirth it's just another boss.
I prefer how Midgardsommr was rendered in Rebirth as it wasn't optional anymore as most of us ended up being curious anyway and would tend to battle it out with the monster, additionally, we finally see how that big snake ended up on that stick. 👍
Well, if Elidibs and Midgardsormr are on the list... It would only be fair to list the Shadow Dragon summoned by Golbez in Final Fantasy 4 and in Golbez's "EX Mode" in Dissidia and Duodecim.
I wouldn't consider Midgardsormr a summon in FFT. Specifically because it lacks the Summon Orb animation when being used. Zodiark has those, as seen in your footage, and is of course a summon that can be learned by a summoner. Furthermore, Summoners can learn summons when they are casted on them (like Zodiark), and so if a Summoner had Midgardsormr cast on them and they survived, would they not be prompted to learn it if the attack was indeed a summon? In addition, its area of effect is a single space which is inconsistent with all other summons in the game. The description of the attack does say "Attack by summoning a spectral serpent". I would need to see the Japanese to see if it is the same type of "summon" they use when referring to the use of the typical summon monsters in the game. I really don't think they are the same though. Anyhow, I'm a big fan of yours and big FF fan in general even though I generally focus on making Zelda Content. I didn't know about Mini-Mog!
Thats cool about FF6 and the auction house. I never actually beat FF6 as the game made it way to hard for me, but when I make my way to 6 in the Pixel Remaster I will keep that in mind lol. Also I never knew that about 8. I have the remaster so I will also tr that when J get to it again.
Even in FF6 Pixel remaster it can take a while BUT Quick Saving BEFORE the auction actually stars MAY change the randomness of getting the 2 espers 30,000 cost but ALSO make it user to BUY ANOTHER 4 Cure rings their for another 80,000 gil (20,000 per cure ring bought).
I gotta call out the writers, they forgot that Segwarides, the Knight in the Golden Mask from World of Final Fantasy is a Zona Seeker. His form for his final fight looks just like the sprite from FF6. WWoFF needs a bit more acknowledgement.
Not sure if I would consider Hecatonchier “obscure” as a summon. Yes, it didn’t really show up as a summon too many other places, but in XIII…well, not only are the eidolons more memorable from how they’re obtained and locked to characters, but the most optimal uses for them were taking down oretoises. A job where you also want Vanille’s Death. She may have gotten a very rare summon, but it’s the one you were most likely to use if you went for completion.
There are actually four: And the fourth one is the Cocatrice. The Cocatrice was "dummied out" of the original "Final Fantasy 2" version of Final Fantasy 4 on the SNES, but on the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 1, and Nintendo DS, it is obtainable as a random drop by defeating almost any bird-like enemy - even the one's surrounding Baron Castle at the beginning of the game. The Goblin (Imp), Bomb, and Cocatrice are also obtainable in "Interlude" in the Complete Works on PSP (sorry, no Mindflayer (Mage)! However, all four are also obtainable in Rydia's Chapter and those of other characters in The Afteryears. I've sunk SO MUCH TIME into getting those item drops in almost every version of these games that I own. Being an ability-completionist can kind of suck sometimes. LOL!
Even on the Pixel remaster the 4 FF4 summons almost NEVER drop even at lv 99 and they kind of SUCK anyways as for after years Bahamut is still the ONLY end game summon worth using the 4 item summons are still crap.
I've played SNES FF2 since I was 10 years old. 100's of hours. Imp is MUCH more obscure than anything in this video. Dozens of playthroughs, I randomly got it once.
I may get some hate on this, but it's my opinion. I really can't stand summons. Well, at least the ones with cut scenes. I know that you can skip most of them. But, I don't like sitting around waiting for them to do their thing. I'm fine with how X does them. As, they stay on the field and you control them. I'd rather throw my own lightning bolt. I did, however, enjoy it when I was younger.
er... You DO know that Chocobo World was in the Western PC release of FFVIII from the outset right? So anyone playing the PC version of FFVIII could get all of the extra items easily enough. I owned both versions (and many more versions since like PSVita, Steam etc.) but pretty much always played the PC version for convenience. [edit] already mentioned in comments I see. Cool ^^

The real utility of Zona Seeker is that plus 2 magic power per level. It's essential to all mage builds.
I want to point out that zona seeker has an appearance incredibly similar to Gazer (Final Fantasy XII).
Remember when you could summon Sora from Kingdom Hearts in World of Final Fantasy?
8:56 - That is frustrating! I pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe and did NOT get any of the pre-order items.
Amaterasu glaring at Dryad taking up her spot
Cant wait to see the lil egg dude from 5
I was really expecting egg chop
Zona Seeker did end up appearing in another game in the franchise: World of Final Fantasy.
Big spoilers for World of Final Fantasy follow.
Late in the game, it’s revealed that one of the Exnine Knights, the Masked Knight, is a fusion of a human soul and a Mirage of the Zona Seeker species. His name is Zona Seeker Segwarides. His mask has the same look as that on the Esper in VI.
I didn't know about Midgarsorm since it was called "Jormugand" in the original version of FFVI.
We had access to mini mog on pc on its original release ;)
Shiva is a motorcycle! That's what I always wanted for an iconic Summon. Said nobody...
I'd accept that happening at best odin??? Bike instead of a horse. Maybe if it.... At that point may aswell be ghost rider though
You are forgetting the most important part it was actually the Shiva sisters. Who which had to basically scissor to form the motorcycle.
That is some strong suction power
Yeah, leave the whole motorcycle summon motif to Makoto Nijima
@@kamron_thurmond I almost spit out my drink laughing at this.
The White Hair also has the look of the Bunnies in a Eureka zone in FF14.
i ran in to the magic pot in crisis core a few times but was never able to get it well till i watched this video i didnt know you had to do sorten moves
Explorers was fun. I enjoyed playing as a Bard with my monster pals. Online players not so much...
This whole time I was wondering what Segwarides was based off of in World of Final Fantasy, cuz I knew right away his partner was a Dark Knight. (Turns out the fan wiki had the answer this whole time) but I only just now learned about the Zona Seeker here. So congrats.
To this day, I've played through FF7 a handful of times, and still have never been able to obtain Alexander.
Its easy lol, jus have to beat snow in her cave at the snow field area by icicle inn
Yes but if you FAINT before that happens its NOT worth going BACK to get it its a worthless FF7 summon anyways.
i played the original only twice, but i got every summon except Knights of the Round.
Zone seeker in world of ff was awesome! Zona Seeker!
I always thought Segwarides is World of Final Fantasy was a new unique character, but I guess he is based on Zona Seeker.
Could white hare be a nod to Setzers lagomorph?
I forgot how annoying CC Magic Pot was cause I didn’t do it CC: Re
I bought a PocketStation not long ago and booted up my original save from 1999 and within a short time I got the MiniMog, Moomba and Ribbon exclusive items.
Midgarwarmer or whatever it is also made a return in rebirth :P
I prefer its implementation in the OG, though. Optional, and the game wanted you to avoid it, but beatable if you knew how. In Rebirth it's just another boss.
I prefer how Midgardsommr was rendered in Rebirth as it wasn't optional anymore as most of us ended up being curious anyway and would tend to battle it out with the monster, additionally, we finally see how that big snake ended up on that stick. 👍
Can you do most powerful summons from the whole franchise
They already made that video : ua-cam.com/video/Kuvl1RpL6ic/v-deo.html
It is Midgards Orm, not sorm
You should hear how they pronounce it in voice acted games 😊
Well, if Elidibs and Midgardsormr are on the list... It would only be fair to list the Shadow Dragon summoned by Golbez in Final Fantasy 4 and in Golbez's "EX Mode" in Dissidia and Duodecim.
Also appears recently in XIV with a fight against Golbez (though that one was another dragon, one of Midgarsomr's kids, that got corrupted)
LMAO at "Thomas the Tank Engine's Evil Twin"!
Actually Zona seeker also appeared in world of final fantasy
Also need to use octoslash in crisis core for magic pot.
Raiden from FFVI.
FF VI has tons of obscure summons lol. Has Bismarck ever appeared in another game???
Bismarck has appeared in XIV as a trial boss and XV as a normal whale you can see while in the boat. It also makes a brief appearance in XIII
Dimensions 2 was actually pretty fun.
It really sounds like you say "Final Fantasy 7: Arriba"
When it comes to rarity I would say Pandemona from FFVIII, especially because there's very few wind-elemental summons throughout Final Fantasy history
Amazing video
What about the Eggman summon you can "call" with the magic lamp in FFV 😂
I was today-years-old when I discoveered via this video that the "secret unobtainable summon" Midgardsormr exists in FFT 🤯
I gotta call out the writers, they forgot that Segwarides, the Knight in the Golden Mask from World of Final Fantasy is a Zona Seeker. His form for his final fight looks just like the sprite from FF6. WWoFF needs a bit more acknowledgement.
I was about to say that
Not sure if I would consider Hecatonchier “obscure” as a summon.
Is there a way to find out which songs are playing in the background?
Editor: I've shown them in the top left of the screen at the start of each song 👍
9:38 Ekatonkeir, or Ekatonkeer, not ekatonchier! It's greek, not french
You forgot the three in Final Fantasy IV the Imp the bomb and the mage
I wasted so much time trying and completely failing to get those useless summons. 😅
@@Brahmsonite 😂
Thomas the tank engines evil twin? Wasn't that in the old spoony expirement FF8 videos? If so I'm glad someone else remembers old spoony
I hope they make Torgal a summon in a future game!! 🐾
Zona Seeker is the Golden Mask in World Of...
As a wise man once said: "You don't wanna be on the other end of The Throngler"
I've played SNES FF2 since I was 10 years old. 100's of hours. Imp is MUCH more obscure than anything in this video. Dozens of playthroughs, I randomly got it once.
So mamy of the Espers only appear in FFVI
I may get some hate on this, but it's my opinion. I really can't stand summons. Well, at least the ones with cut scenes. I know that you can skip most of them. But, I don't like sitting around waiting for them to do their thing. I'm fine with how X does them. As, they stay on the field and you control them. I'd rather throw my own lightning bolt. I did, however, enjoy it when I was younger.
I'm glad Final Fantasy is a hyper fixation again. Haven't been this interested in FF since PS1/2
I wish a new explore game would be made
I thought I played FFT all the way through, little did I know…
Cool ^^
I wish i could summon Terra...
Why did you choose top 7 for these videos instead of say 10 or 5? just interested to know, not opposed.
Always thought Angelo was a boy
Technically the PC version of ff8 had a program that brought chocobo world to the PC game in a similar way as the original Japanese handheld
