  • What happened? A brutal, honest report from my failed race in Kranj, Slovenia.
Slovenia 12 hours in Kranj is the best organized 12 hour race out there. I had the pleasure to attend. These are my short stories from that race. I also have a chat with Anna. A Swedish ultramarathoner living the van camping life. Full of life and dreams!

As a last minute update .... a few days after my initial reactions:
    "
My avg pace for the first ~ 60k was ca 4:30 min/km. (After 6 hours I had ca 77.5k). My initial pace, 4:30, was higher than the plan (4:40-4:50). Again, I must learn to be more patient. Can not continue to do that same mistake. After my fall at ca 65k, where I was lying flat on the ground with wounds on my knees and elbows, I started to feel a lot of stiffness. And felt that cramps building up. At 79k I stopped to change my shoes to a less agressive model (from Altra Vanish Carbon 2 to Altra Fwd Experience). As Sondre helped me with the shoes I got a mega cramp at left leg. Without anything else than a shorts, I was lying at the asfalt in full length, for the 2nd time, and screaming. (Had to ride it off. ) At that point I knew that my race was lost. In short, I blame 1) 4:30 instead of 4:40-4:50 and 2.) stupid me being unfocused (I was trying to change a song at my watch) and tripped over a roadblock 😔

Takk for at du ser på og finner verdi i det jeg lager. Er viktig for min egen del å dokumentere og hele tiden prøve å finne forbedringer. Jeg lærer mye om meg selv. En viktig måte for fremskritt.

Sounds like Anna had an episode of SVT, which is "beneign" takycardia. If it happens again she could try using valsalva maneuvers. Just google it, there are different variations of them, that all basically work in similar fashion. The best one is probably the modified valsalva, which is a bit hard to do be yourself, but I guess it can be done! Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, she should check this out if this is something that will happen more often. What I see, and what I have experienced myself, is that - under high physical pressure in combination with extreme dehydration and low on sodium - my heart beat goes skyhigh, my breathing becomes heavy and I get in a kind of panic mode.

Tusen takk! Så kjekt å høre. Selvom det ikke gikk helt som planlagt - så ble det ihvertfall en fin tur og en god historie. Kommer flere videoer fremover. Følg med!

Great effort! Those stone slabs look like they would be really brutal on the legs - add a hot day and an overly stiff shoe and I can imagine the cramps would be rough. Sounds like you got a few more pieces of the puzzle, so I'm sure you'll demolish the record next time

Thanks for your feedback! True, true.... a few days now after the race - I see that my starting pace at 4:29 (for the first 4-5 hours) was a bit too much off my 4:40-4:50 plan. That was the main failure. Anyway,,, a great weekend. Cool people, great food and good traning.
