Marshall MOSFET 100 Reverb - BUY IT if you find it!!

- I'm playing a killer 1989 Marshall Model 5100 MOSFET 100 Reverb. This amp nails so many classic tones. This amp is still really cheap. It actually does a great Hiwatt tone, which Marshall amps usually don't. I'm playing it with a Nordin Comet Krystin guitar with a Gibson Burstbucker 2 in the bridge. I've added some of the Cubase Phaser on some of the riffs, as well as some UA Riland Space echo on some.
More of my videos featuring this amp:
• Cheap but Word Class! ...
• Inside the beast - Mar...
And MOSFET 100 LEAD which is the head version of this amp minus the reverb:

Sounds great! Really sparkling. I’m glad to see that your nephew is now demonstrating cabs and not just heads.
Thanks Eddie! 😂❤️
Deffo the best solid state amp they ever made.
Marshall should consider to build these again with a class A/B powerstage for more power at high resistance load and even closer to tube response, and add an IR output with the option to load custom IR’s.
My first amp was a Marshall Lead 100 mosfet head. Bought used in 1988. Gigged it with thrash bands and my early days in Sabbath tribute band. It's very flexible/adaptable and I still have it.
I bought a 1987 Marshall MOSFET Lead 100 head years ago and love it. Great line of amps.
I have the 75 watt version. I love it. Most of Marshall's mid-late 80's solid state amps sounded great. They should bring them back.
I wasn't expecting the slight twang and all the nice cleans! I like it!
Thanks yeah I was surprised by the Hiwatt and Fender like tones!
I've been looking for one for a while now. Don't show up too often where I look, and wont be any easier to find after this video.
You made it sound great, as usual. Thanks Johan, and regards to your new co-worker!
Thanks Bengt! 😆❤️
I loved the sound of all the amp models you showed us from the series.
Glad to hear it! Cheers
I love the Marshall solid state amps of the 80s, imo they managed to capture some of that Marshall magic you find in the tube offerings!
Great video again Johan! Thanks!
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Pretty good Marshall, sounds great and being solid state there's not the hassle with the tubes as costly maintenance and worrying for damage too much. I think the Mosfet has a sound of its own, still has good compression like a tube Marshall, and also very versatile and dynamic. Thanks Johan!
Thanks glad to hear it!
Thanks Johan. I picked up the 2x12 5213 version of this a few years ago as a live poweramp/cab for a Kemper. I was actually surprised how good it sounds by itself. The 2x12 is a much more full sounding beast.
Yeah the Marshall branded V30 in those are amazing
The G12H-100 might be what makes this amp so special. I wonder what that speaker would sound like in something like a MG series solid state amp. That time you made a MG sound like a JCM800 blew my mind! Keep up the great work!! I love these videos that showcase amps we'd normally pass on.
Thanks! Glad you like them!
It’s the circuit design that makes it great, you won’t get the sane response with an MG nor Valvestate trough the same speakers.
Only downside is that those 100W are at 4 ohm, considered that I would go for the head and not the combo, since it isn’t A/B it will dump down to half, 50W with 2x16 ohm cabs.
@@JoeBaermann
Couldn't you use 2 x 8ohm speakers in parallel to make 4ohms?
Around 2001 I used to have a 2x12 version of this, it was just ok for the metal sounds I was using it for in my apartment (I used it with pedals for gain, it doesn’t have that much on board). It had a tinny sound for that but the reverb was sweet. It sounds much better here used in this low gain kind of way. Thanks for the memory Johan, I haven’t thought about that amp in forever.
The big recollection I have of using it is asking my then-roomate to play a solo on a song I was recording with this amp, specifically a solo played with a sneaker to make it extra abstract and weird haha
Aloha Johan! Mosfet sounds about as close to tube you can get with solid state. Mahalo
Aloha Victor! Yeah very realistic breakup
I love that kid! He has the right stuff!
Thanks 😆❤️
100k subscribers soon for our dear 🎉Johan! Hope this great channel continues
Johan your playing is improving by making all these video's 😂 You sound great 👍
Thanks it’s great to hear that!
Amazing tones as usual. The intros with your nephew always bring a smile to my face. I thought you'd make it all the way thru before he flipped the bird or something else. Today, it was something else! 🤣 God bless and rock on 🎸👍
Thanks man, I actually begged him to just stand in the background 😂 But he had other ideas every take so I gave up. Rock on! 🎸👍
Johan , you are the best at taking any stank that people throw at Marshall ss amps away.
Thanks Joe! Glad to hear it!
Thank you Johan! Great video & Playing, as usual. I've been watching 1 for sale near me in NSW Australia. A Mosfet lead 100 Reverb twin but couldn't decide between some others. I own too many amps but for $350. Aussie money, I'd be a Total Fool to let this 1 pass by. Love your videos! Very Educational...
Thanks, great to hear that!
Mosfet Lead 100 + 4x12 Celestions + HM Strat = killer tone.
I bet it is!
A really good versatile amplifier for its size. Nice tone as well. Dialed in with the right guitar it could work.
Thanks Johan. Cheers from Hawaii
Thanks Darrell! Cheers from Sweden!
I have a master reverb 30. Also sound great
Yeah That’s a great one too
Great vibe and tones 👌🏻
Glad to hear it!
Very nice playing!
Thanks glad to hear it!
Låter ju underbart, Johan! Härligt med lite Brahehus slottsruin i bakgrunden :)
Tackar! Ja jag älskar den vyn
Those amps sound amazing! I have a 30 watt version that i bought for almost norhing it rocks!
That's a very bright sounding speaker considering you had the treble at zero. It also seems to have a good range of gain, so it appears to be quite versatile in terms of tones and genres it covers
Thanks, it’s really bright and versatile
Jcm 800 tone in spades
Yeah indeed! 🤘
I checked the circuit. The preamp is all opamps and diode clippling. Basically a pedal. Whatever mojo in the tone it is on the mosfet power and speaker.
Very interesting that it gets this smooth breakup with that technology
Go MR Segeborn Go
Glad to see you here my friend! ❤️
Surprisingly good cleans and nice tasty mild break-up. I was expecting to hear some higher gain or more more overdriven tones as well. Does it not do this? Mosfet effect pedals have often sounded nice to me as well.
Thanks Andrew! It’s a great metal amp too. The link at the bottom in the video description has it tweaked like that
@JohanSegeborn No worries Johan, thanks for your reply! I always enjoy your videos but haven't commented in a while, sorry. I was sure being Marshall it would do high gain! I'm not into metal but interested to hear what it can do with gain cranked. Ok cool, I'll check out the link to other videos. Cheers buddy. 👍🎸
Shit. The LAST thing i needed was another Marshall. On the hunt now…
Hi, Johan! Enjoy your summer! Every day is great! See you!
Siegfried
Hi Siegfried! Hope your summer is great too!
I've never seen an amp that size with casters. Sounds great, though.
Thanks! It’s very practical though
I've had the 15" variant of this amp (5215) for sale for a while now, I'm guessing it'll probably be gone this weekend.
Cool! I didn’t know that one existed!
@@JohanSegeborn It's for sale if you're interested ;) I live in the Netherlands, so shipping shouldn't be that hard.
By far, the best amp in this range is the larger of the Lead 100 Mosfet Heads, the 3210. I had a mint one, why did I sell it.
Nice!!
Thanks!
You know you've just doubled the price right lol 👍
😃👍
Nice amp .i had one the same .i sold it cause its bloody loud .good if you live somewhere were you can crank it full.its a great amp.nice one bro.🙏👍🌹🌹🌹❤
Thanks brother yeah it’s super loud!
Is it really that much like a tube amp, that it has to be played at high volume to sound good? From my experience, high volume is where tubes have a marked advantage over solid states
@@jasondorsey7110The response is tube like, it sounds good even at low volume, JMP and JCM sound best at high volume, so in that regard it wont’ do like a tubeamp, sounding better or worse dependant on volume.
If you want to go that route I would recommend you to try the Orange PedalBaby 100 poweramp and see if you like it with any preamp or modeller of choice, since that also has a tubelike response and starts to sound better at around 10-11 o’clock on the volume knob with 8 ohm load, their Super Crush has the same poweramp design and more presence than the Crush, but the preamp with its pronounced low mids is not everyones cup of tea.
I got good results using Blackstars Depth 10 Dual Drive, an 808 with jfet and both silicon as germanium fuzzes in front of the poweramp to get close to the 70’s Frehley sound on the studio recordings with 2x12 cabs loaded with v-type neo’s.
NUX Amp Academy instead of the depth 10 gives me the same with it’s JCM800 modelling at low bias and low gain, letting a big muff add the clipping character and the ts the push, some of the early stuff my clonebender mk1 at lowish attack seems better than the muff.
Tried the newer LPB-1, works but it didn’t get close enough on the clipping character with that type of setup.
Great sounds but wonder where the phaser sound is coming from?
Thanks! I added that in post in Cubase it’s the stock phaser
Heh just seen some plonker whack his up from £40 to £350 on ebay. Looks a state too. 🤨
😆
I heard they're a nightmare to get parts for when they go wrong ( transisters unavailable ? ?)
Is this the case?.. Any Experts out there?
Sounds a bit bright and brittle suppose that's the difference between valve and transistor theirs a tinniness to a lot of solid state amps
That’s how I tweaked it for these riffs. I have a couple of other videos of this amp in the video description where it’s tweaked to fatter tones
this sounds very alex lifeson to me
