As a teacher I always did my best to keep my politics private from my students. There were two times I failed because a student had said something so absolutely wildly wrong that I had to correct them (one time a student claimed that Democrats had caused the 2018-2019 shutdown and another where the student claimed that Trump was a socialist) but it’s very unprofessional thing to do.

I was on the hard right until I discovered destiny in a debate, the debate itself didn’t flip me but made me question a lot of shit. Then I listened to more, and slowly my mind was opened up. I don’t comment, I don’t chat in stream, I’m not in the discords, I’m a blue collar worker that listens to this stuff during my commutes. Online debate is important because I’m sure there are plenty of others like myself out there listening.
yeah likewise, it isn't only Destiny. LonerBox and some othet things poked holes in what I believe and here we are. I followed Destiny later and I learned a lot of good skills and different perspectives from both of them
Same. There were so few good arguments from the left and most of them felt like they were running away from their ideas getting challenged and burying their heads in the sand. It was so refreshing to see Destiny even if he was right or wrong defend his opinions and call out the fallacies on the right too. His debates definitely changed my opinions quite a bit over the years.

The answer is to have good arguments, be so convincing that to be convinced away would only be a good thing.
No one is going from Destiny's months of deep diving into the Israel conflict, and then turning to Hasan and going 'welp, he did have that sassy one liner. Guess I'm convinced.' These guys think Destiny is just aspousing foundationless beliefs, and not beliefs backed by research and reasoning. Which is why they believe someone can come along and snatch up those simpleminded listeners.
Honestly, I think it's projecting. They watched Destiny put in the work, go on massive platforms despite being taken off Twitch, Destiny is thriving despite facing the single nail that would kill their career. They can't admit that he's doing actual research to understand and be able to take a well informed and well reasoned position... "it's just Sophistry and Rhetoric. It's all I've got, so it's not like he could possibly have anything else."
They're looking at Destiny's strong foundation for why his viewers keep coming back, and then piling up the sand they prop themselves up on hoping that each viewer that is each grain of sand continues to believe that they are right.

As a Conservative who enjoys Destiny debating, even if he doesn't convert me to his side, I now understand the other side better. All these people claiming debates don't help are jumping on the "debates bad" bandwagon because their hero, Hasan, sucks ass at debate. And when Hasan debates, he pushes people away from the side he's trying to persuade.
I completely agree, I feel like what these people are missing here is how healthy it is to talk to someone who thinks differently to you. And also to listen to two other people talk about topics they disagree on. For me it’s refreshing and beneficial to see that.
It’s good to see your own opinion challenged, so that you can challenge it internally, but also so you can better understand and humanise the other side.
It’s not really about winning or convincing someone, it’s just healthy to listen.

The most laughable point that one of the anti-debate people made was that Protesting is better than online debating. Because I don't know about you, but having people holding up signs with extreme messaging and people screaming their opinion while blocking the road, a building, or trying to keep people out of somewhere is not a way to convince someone of something.

I love that people have the freedom to protest, and I do think it can be a good thing to do. But I ultimately learn nothing from a slogan on a sign.

I started this debate thinking "Here are 4 creators that I've never been exposed to that might be worth following" and this debate convinced me that only Whick and Destiny are worth a shit out of the 7. Debates can effectively solidify one's understanding to positions not previously held.

When they were talking about social pressure and echo chambers, the smaller you confine the space of influence, the easier it is to echo chamber a social structure or a group of ideas. When online you are immediately met with different communities and ideas where you might not have been exposed to those particular ideas if not been given access to speaking to individuals online.
So just putting foot to grass would have to imply that everyone would need to travel to multiple communities to pit their own experiences with the experiences of others. The accessibility differences between the 2 are massive.

I don’t agree with Destiny on most things. But I like listening to him explain why he has those opinions. It’s interesting to hear other people’s point of view.
This debate is such genius. It gives Destiny a chance to refute the most recent strawmen of his arguments, and it does that in the form of debate. So not only does he get to defend his arguments, but gets to show how persuasive debate can be, especially against factually unprepared opponents.

But the point of this format of debate isn’t exactly to change the positions of one’s opponents. That can happen, but the main purpose is to expose weaknesses in the positions of the opponent for the audience to see. It’s a rare trait to be able to accurately assess one’s own position, and/or oppositional arguments on the fly during a debate. Usually emotion gets in the way of that.

When that guy tried to Gotcha destiny in the beginning by asking destiny if he ever changed his mind during or after a debate and destiny said "sure, all the time!", the video couldve just ended right there. @@howdareyou41 I think this lends them way too much benefit of the doubt. The reality is, all of these guys are perfectly capable of reading and genuinely understanding a topic. They simply don't want to because they center themselves around adherence to ideology and acceptance from their peers, not genuine interest in anything factual. If they wanted to, they could start to engage with truth. But many of them would completely lose whatever audience they currently have and many or most of their friends in the process.

This, to me, is a poor argument. Even if they are salty as fuck that would not prove online debate is ineffective. The best version of their argument I can conjure is that while online debate MAY be effective at convincing people the question is whether it has convinced them in a good way. For instance, if you are convinced of the right conclusion but you are convinced through emotional means like seeing someone "dunked on" you may have the right conclusions, but you have learned to reach conclusions in an illogical manner.
To me, I simply can't take these debates seriously because there is too much noise of personal disputes and owning the other person. I want to see two people try to reach the truth together. I don't get that from the online sphere

I’m a quite right-wing and I appreciate destiny. Before I found his streams all I saw was leftist outliers with extreme (imo) views. He makes me think and I appreciate it.
