  • Here, at last, is my tribute to the great ‪@BW-CC‬, multi-instrumentalist and man who found himself in the middle of EVERYTHING regarding Eric Clapton, George Harrison and pretty much the center of the rock world in the early 70s.

Bobby Whitlock’s contribution to two historic rock albums should be enough to want people to investigate his music and history more… an extremely talented musician and singer… never got the credit he deserved… his channel here on UA-cam is very entertaining and informative.
I’ve binged watched lots of his and Coco’s videos… I have his book ( I’m saving it to read on my vacation)… and Thanks to Guitar Historian… for shedding some light on this talented artist. Peace…🌜🌞🌛

Thank you for this. The D&B bands introduced so much great talent - Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, Jim Keltner, Leon Russell, Sam Clayton, Rita Coolidge, Kenny Gradney, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Jimmy Karstein etc. - as well as the soulful gospel-inspired and occasionally country- and rock 'n' roll-infused sound that propelled those early Clapton hits (his debut album was him fronting the D&B band), Joe Cocker ('The Letter', 'Delta Lady'), and Mad Dogs & Englishmen (essentially the D&B band led by Leon Russell). Today we hear that sound from the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. On one of Eric Clapton's Crossroads DVDs Tedeschi and Trucks note that they had, surprisingly given that Duane Allman was a guest member of the D&B band, only recently discovered D&B.
According to Whitlock, the focus on the original trio was Bonnie - she was the one who was impressing everyone. Then Delaney, in the sort of move he became notorious for, put his name first.
I believe it was Harry Nilsson who took George Harrison to a bar one night to see D&B and Friends. Harrison, highly impressed, asked D&B if he could bring a tape recorder and record them the following night. They agreed. That was the tape he played to Clapton when the latter was wanting to determine the opening act for the Blind Faith tour. According to Ginger Baker, the only time Blind Faith saw Clapton on that tour was when he was playing their set. Otherwise, he travelled, ate, slept and played with the D&B band.
Yes, Jimmy Miller produced the Stones. He had previously produced the Spencer Davis Group, most notably monster hits 'Gimme Some Lovin'' and 'I'm a Man' (which he co-wrote with Stevie Winwood), and Traffic. It was he who introduced percussion to those songs and to the Stones. That's him on cowbell for 'Honky Tonk Woman'. He also drummed on a some Stones tunes including 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', 'Happy', 'Shine a Light' and the end of 'Tumbling Dice'. Keith Richards said that it was Miller who turned his folk dirge of a tune 'Sympathy for the Devil' into the samba-driven, percussion-adorned gem that it became.
The mention that Carl Radle and Jim Gordon quit D&B to join Derek & the Dominos isn't quite accurate, as everyone quit the band after the UK/Euro tour, except Whitlock. When EC and Whitlock, who was living at Clapton's house at the time (Steve Cropper suggested he spend some time with Eric, even purchasing the ticket) decided to put a band together (at EC's prompting) Carl Radle and Jim Keltner are who they wanted. Radle was available but Keltner was busy with Gabor Szabo. To their surprise, Gordon just happened to be in London, so he was enlisted. Ultimately, he would be the one to prompt the breakup of the band. Hopefully this adds some insight into what you've already said. You do an admirable job, and it is great that you delve into topics like Mr. Whitlock and others who aren't necessarily always the headliners.

July 26 1970 Mick Jagger's Birthday Party, Bobby Keys was asked to join the Stones. Keys walked out of Micks in home office and said to Bobby, Mick says if you want to join the Stones to go in and talk to him. Bobby said no thanks I am in a band with Eric. There is also a interesting story about a Stones song Bobby is on and never got credit. Read his book or watch his channel. He has tons of stories like these.

@@lia1063 Thank you for this. I do watch Bobby's videos (I'm due for another binge session) but have yet to read his book. I've read Bobby Keys' memoir, but there's not much depth on the D&B period. The Stones offer is something I was unaware of. The attraction would be a given at the time. Ian McLagan, someone steeped in Booker T and the Stax sound - which, of course, is where Whitlock comes from - was a great alternative.

    • @TheGuitarHistorian
      @TheGuitarHistorian  3 роки тому +2

Well, he didn’t lose his son until years later; and the songs on Layla are written about the current wife of his best friend (George Harrison), and he was beginning a heroin addiction that would last several years (until right before 461 ocean Blvd album). And most would say that most of Clapton’s problems were self inflicted… but in my opinion his career between 1962 and 1970 and his inability to trust people or stay in one place was more due to his upbringing. He older parents raised him with a much older “sister” his whole early childhood until he was a teenager when they suddenly told him the truth - they were actually his grandparents and his “sister” was really his mother who didn’t want to the responsibility of raising Eric.
      He had a strange life.

I heard Bobby lament about Eric coming to Texas on tour without so much as a phone call, much less an invitation to appear as a guest. I'd love to hear Eric's side of the story.

Don’t know when that was, but if it was any time in the 70s, he may not remember. It was either heroin or alcohol for Eric in those days. He didn’t have many friends he’d alienated most of them.

I have really enjoyed going back to watch your fantastic videos as well as the Bobby and CoCo vids on their own channel. I have a couple of questions... Bobby seems to have a heart of Gold. My questions are: why did he take a decade or two away from all things Rock music? What did he do during those years? The other thing is a bit more delicate. Bobby speaks as though he had some kind of handicap. I can't put my finger on it, but it's as though he did too many mind-affecting drugs and those drugs ef'ed up his mind a bit. I don't make this observation with any kind of judgment or condemnation at all - it's just that he seems somewhat unusual in his speaking mannerisms. What did he do as far as "D n A"? How did he get sober? Does he discuss that anywhere?
I want to say again how much I appreciate your work on the series - in fact - on all your videos. You are remarkable and admirable and you make a wonderful contribution to guys like me who grew up on R&R, listening since the fifties. How do you know so much? You obviously are not old enough to have been there for all these musicians about whom, you know so much! I mean, you weren't even born when the Beatles were around. I cannot imagine what that must be like - to grow up without hearing the Beatles from their beginnings. I would love to know how your passion developed; what inspired you to do this work on Rock History? What is your own personal musical involvement - I see you with a guitar occasionally. I would love to know more about you, as well as the answers to my questions around Bobby W's life as I mentioned above. Thank you brother! I appreciate you so much!
    I

You are correct that I am not old enough to know the best era in rock firsthand. But the best way I can tell you about the beginnings of my passion revolve around Magical Mystery Tour.
When I was a kid, I had one of these little
Fisher Price record players and the first record I reached for was MMT, probably due to the Beatles wearing the costumes on the cover. I wore that record out and it began my love affair with the Beatles. But my parents always listened to great music; they were slightly slightly later so for my Dad it was the Doors, CCR, Bowie, even going into prog rock like Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Yes… he liked to get those Columbia House scams LOL where you get a bunch of free cassettes for whatever But bless him he knew how to play the game and never got charged for more than a couple of albums ha ha… Anyway they were always “new” albums and greatest hits and bands coming into the house when I was a kid (not new to him of course) and I just fed off it.
I did get into some of the bands in the 90s like Nirvana, Green Day, Soundgarden… Even more rock-based metal bands like Metallica. Iron maiden. Sabbath. But there was never a time that I was not in love with classic rock. And I always wanna know everything about the artist I’m listening to… Where they’re from there backstory… And then I realized there’s a community of people out there that like that too, and I thought I would bring those stories to people like you and me.
It’s a passion and a flame that’ll never go out.
Now regarding your questions about Bobby… To be honest it does seem like he may have Parkinson’s; I watched my uncle go through it and some of the cadence and manner of speech is familiar but I would not attempt to diagnose anyone not being a doctor. I would just imagine that most of what everyone else around him was doing e.g. alcohol heroin cocaine etc. he was doing too. And I’m sure that took its toll.

@@TheGuitarHistorian Thanks. Like someone else said about you, that they love the sound of your voice and I do also - you have a very compassionate AND passionate way of speaking about those that interest you. I would say that of all those to whom I listen and read, your insights and opinions and pure knowledge of Rock musicians are the best, the most respectful, and the most comprehensive. I appreciate hearing your own history, as well. As the man who carries this message, it's important for me to know a bit about you to lend credibility to what you say . You definitely are one of the better if not the best!

@@lia1063 Thanks Gary. I have been trying to find it outside of ordering it from Amazon. I usually get all of my books from the library or free downloads for Kindle. I hate paying for stuff! I mentioned somewhere else, but I live in Memphis. You'd think that if all places on earth, the Memphis Library would have copies of Bobby's book, but they don't! If I get it and read it, I am definitely donating it to the library when I'm finished.
