For years. Decades as a Chinese kid in South East Asia growing up in a predominantly Western and Japanese culture games and media I long to see such a update to Chinese myth in AAA games. As much as I love Star Wars lore and God of War. It is really nice to see my ancestors culture in a modern game like this. I am satisfied.

FYI, the English Subtitle isn't exactly that "well" translated as they missed out a lot of character hierarchy here. So basically, the lady that brought "you" which is the game character into their mansion is the 2nd Sister. The first 2 lady u see shortly are the 3rd and 4th sisters. And the one seated and playing with a spider is the 5th Sister. The final one that came out (with moles beside her lips) is the eldest sister. They are all implied to be a Demoness, specifically SPIDER Demoness. Wondering why all of them look so normal? Because even in chinese folktale since history, demoness usually takes form in beautiful HUMANOID ladies. The final old lady is the MOTHER of them all, AKA the MAIN Spider Demoness.

Just a wild guess for the story background. The setting of the story in Wukong Black Myth should be in an alternative universe where the demons managed to defeat the deities in sky palace, which seemingly happened hundreds of years after the original journey to the west storyline. The core concept of the setting is about revolution. Since the universe seems in chaos and still suffers regardless of the ruler of the world has changed (from corrupted deity to demons), the main character, wukong’s dupe, decide to take the journey to the west again but to defeat his master, the real wukong, who as the leader of demons and who has also became corrupted because of the social state he gain after becoming the ruler of the world. And so this journey is mean to remove all good and evil that rules the old world and stop the cycle once and for all, return the world to a state where nobody rules it as it means to be.
Definitely leaning towards that direction, after all the game is called Black Myth Wukong and the devs said they will have a different approach to it, instead of following the novel.
Not exactly this seems like it is after the journey of the west, the main character could be very well The Six-Eared Macaque (Liu'er mihou) who seems to have duped the real wukong , possibly defeating him.

@@jamesyu6875 its janky as f. the women, low poly models, they look hollow, definitely not next-gen, or UE5 level. we see this kind of character quality on the ps3. use emulator and set it 4k and high AA you see what i mean. aside from the clothes they use low res bland textures for the skin, the old woman face is no better, just added geometry for details, nothing like tesselation, very rough. from the motion stiffness there was no mocap. the gameplay video looks infinitely better.

In fact how accurate is it.... ive never seen we've never seen Journey to the West recently made with this much realism and dedication to the original source and we've never had the graphics or the tech to do it justice..... i only know of journey to the west by name and know of the general synopsis... i was surrounded by the sort of HK saturday evening television show growing up so was sort of bored and wasnt grabbed by men in funny garish animal suits lol and i was aware of the japanese tv show and aware of Goku obviously but the true source material i dont know.... im guessing its like watching the lord of the rings cartoon and thinking that was lord of the rings.... huge fan of the lotr movies.... peter jackson is obsessed with the source and the detail and it shows..... hopefully this game is rich in the same passion and detail

In the journey the monk found and accepted 4 monsters ( 3 of them are like gods in heaven but been banished and turned into monsters ) to his's apprentice and they have to protect the Monk by order of Buddha and Wukong was the strongest. Rumors said if any monster can eat the Monk whole will live enternity. In Spider Demons arc, the spiders disguise into beautiful girls ( like the trailer ) and lure them to eat the Monk, Wukong recoginzed they were monsters but the Monk didn't ( because the Monk was just the normal person but his past life was the Buddha apprentice that's why every monster want to eat him ). The whole Journey is about all 5 have to overcome all 81 disasters and travel to India safely by order of Buddha to take the Buddha's Scroll and all 5 can comeback their true form as a god.
@@bahien200497 yes this is the over arching story. Then there are lots of mini stories for each demon encounter. And the deciples and other gods also gets really good back stories. It's truly a great novel. Very deep with many characters.

They had a schedule? Their first trailer is said to have simply been a recruiting tease for more developers. Don't think they had a set date for it or anything.
I've watched two and half minuts , the translation tells the plot, but massively missed on how the dialog is constructed. Chinese, Japanese and Korean can be translate with each other with almost full of the original dialog, but english is different, the level of details in the dialog would be a very long sentence in english. That's why when I played sekiro I chose to play Chinese version, when play elden ring or dark souls definitly played with English version. Script writing is such a form of art, If you're not bilingual you have no idea what you missed.

Such high quality cutscenes and what looks like more gameplay at the end makes me VERY sceptical for such a new studio. Hope they knock it out of the park.

@@kaze-xo true, jttw is more xianxia really. But I think the water margin, condor heroes, seven swords all have a lot of potential as a setting for video games. You just need a good developers to write and make the game and I feel this developer has that potential. There was a storm riders video game many years back, but it was a Chinese language only game. Otherwise, from my friends who had played it. (I did not) they said it was a great game.

I agree, this kills me as someone whose mother tongue is chinese but is not at the level to fully get the language used here, so i'll still have to use eng subs. The dissonance isn't large for me thankfully.
I agree, the Chinese language is so incredibly "personal" and culturally rich, hence, it doesn't translate too well into a more "objective" language like English. There are lots of details, nuances, and information a person will only get/understand if they spoke Chinese themselves.
Hopefully they will refined the English subtitles, coz it really loses the depth and essence of the original Chinese context and dialogues in lots of the lines. For instance, in the last scene, the mom was yelling “快走” which is something more like ‘Run! Hurry!’ implying even she’s rampaging but tried hard to hold last bit of her mind for not harming her groom instead of ‘get out’ which sounds like she was angry being interrupted.
I really hope the English translation for this game would be better in official release so people other than Chinese playing this game get the gist of it and really enjoy the plot. as of now in this teaser the English subtitle doesn't express 1/10 of the story line.
I've been watching Chinese dramas for a while now, and I'm surprised to realize how many words I've picked up along the way. I can hear them calling each other "jiejie" (big/older sister) and "meimei" (little/younger sister), but that's not reflected in the subtitling.
Yeah, I agree. I've done some translating work on the amateur side before, and there are some drawbacks to the approach the translator the devs has hired has taken. Its definitely more 'Woolsey' in it's approach. Assumes that the audience won't be able to immediately understand the cultural lingual cues well, so they try to instead present scenes as a whole rather than specific sentences, losing context, flair and meaning. Hence why some dialogue is almost completely different, but as an entire scene still roughly the same.
❤of🕷 The most tragic aspect of this storytelling is that she found her lover, but in the end the spider queen will eat this unknown spouse at the so-called celerating wedding, it's the nature. Meanwhile the last words "GET OUT" expressing in such desperate manner tell us how much she loves him after all those years, she suppressing her nature and urges him to run, she's kinda like Professor Snape in Harry Potter, a tragic figure trapped in the web of love. And yes irony intended, you're welcome!

As a chinese, I got to say something.Actually, except for the Chinese, no one can understand this broadcast, even those who have not received a good education may not understand. Most of the verses in this demo, if you have received a high school education in China, then you can understand half of it, and the other half needs to be combined with the content of the game itself. I think that unless it is a Chinese language and has received a very professional education in ancient poetry, it is difficult for ordinary people to understand the dialogue in half of the verses. Don't count on translation. Nowadays, it is very difficult to find someone in China who can translate such poems into English. As a Chinese, I can only understand the poems and songs of the ancients when I am almost 20 years old, but don't worry, even so, it is enough to understand the core of Chinese profound culture brought to you by the plot experience game.😆
the culture behind the game is too much for many people, not to mention the dialog. it's even kind of hard to understand the main concept of the game and the content of it is also unfathmable. i think they wanna make art Instead of game and aready put too much effort in it. anyway the graphics look amazing and with fantastic fighting technique of money king the game is also great without studying it's background culture.
I'm Singaporean and my mandarin is definitely very basic, but i love the dialogue in this scene so much. It's like watching old and authentic Legend of the Condor Heroes or Journey to the West movies. I can actually understand most of it, although i can't read the chinese words well. I'm so glad i understand Chinese because the English subs do not even capture half the beauty and meaning in this scene; and this is coming from someone who hated studying chinese language in school. The cinematic is also amazing. This could be the first good Chinese media to come out in a long time.
I can see God Of War Egypt possibly using this game engine in the near future. Looks a lot more hack n slash like the original game series of games but still has the open world element

This is a poignant love story between Zhu Bajie and the Spider Demoness (the old lady in clip). They were destined never to be together, experiencing unrequited/forbidden love. Zhu Bajie, originally the Celestial Marshal Tian Peng, was a general in heaven but was banished to the mortal realm for a love transgression. Buddha tasked him with accompanying Tang Sanzang on the journey to retrieve the scriptures. The Spider Demoness, once the Moon Goddess, was punished and transformed into a spider demon for her own love transgression. Since then, she has been waiting for Zhu Bajie to find her. She waited from her youthful days until she turned gray, but their destinies were fated to keep them apart forever. This story tells us that destiny is often fraught with helplessness and uncertainties, especially between rule and humanity. In pursuing lofty ideals, sacrifices and choices must be made; one cannot have it all. To achieve great ideals, one often must forsake personal desires and continue forward until the goal is attained.
I assumed the released video is about what happens after they have been to the west. In terms of the lyrics, the main character here is Pigsy. The conversation between the sisters reveals that none of them participated in the journey to the west, except for the "mum". Therefore, the sisters are irritated and confused about why their mother wants Pigsy to be her proper groom instead of food. Additionally, I think there was an agreement between Pigsy and the "mum" regarding her fast, which led to her ageing as carnivorous demons need to feed themself with "really" fresh meat to keep them young and beautiful in the background of the journey to the west. We are unable to tell their ages by their appearances. As long as they have a proper feast, they look like they are just turning 18. It is a pretty interesting extension of the journey to the west, as spider demons were teasing Pigsy in the journey, but it seems like a true love story now. @@jamesyu6875 its janky as f. the women, low poly models, they look hollow, definitely not next-gen, or UE5 level. we see this kind of character quality on the ps3. use emulator and set it 4k and high AA you see what i mean. aside from the clothes they use low res bland textures for the skin, the old woman face is no better, just added geometry for details, nothing like tesselation, very rough. from the motion stiffness there was no mocap. the gameplay video looks infinitely better.

In fact how accurate is it.... ive never seen we've never seen Journey to the West recently made with this much realism and dedication to the original source and we've never had the graphics or the tech to do it justice..... i only know of journey to the west by name and know of the general synopsis... i was surrounded by the sort of HK saturday evening television show growing up so was sort of bored and wasnt grabbed by men in funny garish animal suits lol and i was aware of the japanese tv show and aware of Goku obviously but the true source material i dont know.... im guessing its like watching the lord of the rings cartoon and thinking that was lord of the rings.... huge fan of the lotr movies.... peter jackson is obsessed with the source and the detail and it shows..... hopefully this game is rich in the same passion and detail

In the journey the monk found and accepted 4 monsters ( 3 of them are like gods in heaven but been banished and turned into monsters ) to his's apprentice and they have to protect the Monk by order of Buddha and Wukong was the strongest. Rumors said if any monster can eat the Monk whole will live enternity. In Spider Demons arc, the spiders disguise into beautiful girls ( like the trailer ) and lure them to eat the Monk, Wukong recoginzed they were monsters but the Monk didn't ( because the Monk was just the normal person but his past life was the Buddha apprentice that's why every monster want to eat him ). The whole Journey is about all 5 have to overcome all 81 disasters and travel to India safely by order of Buddha to take the Buddha's Scroll and all 5 can comeback their true form as a god.

I've watched two and half minuts , the translation tells the plot, but massively missed on how the dialog is constructed. Chinese, Japanese and Korean can be translate with each other with almost full of the original dialog, but english is different, the level of details in the dialog would be a very long sentence in english. That's why when I played sekiro I chose to play Chinese version, when play elden ring or dark souls definitly played with English version. Script writing is such a form of art, If you're not bilingual you have no idea what you missed.

I agree, the Chinese language is so incredibly "personal" and culturally rich, hence, it doesn't translate too well into a more "objective" language like English. There are lots of details, nuances, and information a person will only get/understand if they spoke Chinese themselves.

Hopefully they will refined the English subtitles, coz it really loses the depth and essence of the original Chinese context and dialogues in lots of the lines.
For instance, in the last scene, the mom was yelling “快走” which is something more like ‘Run! Hurry!’ implying even she’s rampaging but tried hard to hold last bit of her mind for not harming her groom instead of ‘get out’ which sounds like she was angry being interrupted.
This game will be fantastic , hope come soon some more details and release date.

I've been watching Chinese dramas for a while now, and I'm surprised to realize how many words I've picked up along the way. I can hear them calling each other "jiejie" (big/older sister) and "meimei" (little/younger sister), but that's not reflected in the subtitling.
Right now the English translation is absolutely atrocious is what it is. Literally a black spot on an otherwise almost perfect adaptation.
My Mandarin is abyssmal but even I could tell that the subs were off.
Yeah, I agree. I've done some translating work on the amateur side before, and there are some drawbacks to the approach the translator the devs has hired has taken. Its definitely more 'Woolsey' in it's approach. Assumes that the audience won't be able to immediately understand the cultural lingual cues well, so they try to instead present scenes as a whole rather than specific sentences, losing context, flair and meaning. Hence why some dialogue is almost completely different, but as an entire scene still roughly the same.

The most tragic aspect of this storytelling is that she found her lover, but in the end the spider queen will eat this unknown spouse at the so-called celerating wedding, it's the nature.
Meanwhile the last words "GET OUT" expressing in such desperate manner tell us how much she loves him after all those years, she suppressing her nature and urges him to run, she's kinda like Professor Snape in Harry Potter, a tragic figure trapped in the web of love. As a chinese, I got to say something.Actually, except for the Chinese, no one can understand this broadcast, even those who have not received a good education may not understand. Most of the verses in this demo, if you have received a high school education in China, then you can understand half of it, and the other half needs to be combined with the content of the game itself. I'm Singaporean and my mandarin is definitely very basic, but i love the dialogue in this scene so much. It's like watching old and authentic Legend of the Condor Heroes or Journey to the West movies. I can actually understand most of it, although i can't read the chinese words well. I'm so glad i understand Chinese because the English subs do not even capture half the beauty and meaning in this scene; and this is coming from someone who hated studying chinese language in school. The cinematic is also amazing. This could be the first good Chinese media to come out in a long time.

The English subtitles translation isn't that great imo, hope they improve it.
I assumed the released video is about what happens after they have been to the west. In terms of the lyrics, the main character here is Pigsy.
The conversation between the sisters reveals that none of them participated in the journey to the west, except for the "mum". Therefore, the sisters are irritated and confused about why their mother wants Pigsy to be her proper groom instead of food.
Additionally, I think there was an agreement between Pigsy and the "mum" regarding her fast, which led to her ageing as carnivorous demons need to feed themself with "really" fresh meat to keep them young and beautiful in the background of the journey to the west. We are unable to tell their ages by their appearances. As long as they have a proper feast, they look like they are just turning 18.
