Not realistic? Then you must be from a functional family! Many of the people who are brought up in dysfunctional abusive families, I assure you, can relate to this film! Some families are more cruel than this one (yes, more cruel).
In fact, the sibling relationships are a little nicer than many of them are because what typically happens in abusive families with addictions is that one child is picked on to be a scapegoat (punching bag) for the family. Once the scapegoat leaves or is pushed out (or commits suicide), then another scapegoat replacement is chosen by the abusive parent from the rest of the children. So sibling relationships are often much more estranged than this movie portrays, sometimes to the point where none of them are speaking to one another.
Toxic families like this aren't held together by much: they are held together by lies (from the perpetrators) and denial (by the victims).
All of the goading at the dinner table: typical
Making a laughing stock out of the empathetic vegetarian: typical (because empaths are usually the most abused members of a family like this)
Very hurtful secrets coming out of the woodwork at a deeply tragic time: typical ... abusive people love to shock others when they are on their knees
Suicide in an abusive family: too common
Drug addicted acting in this manner: typical
I don't think a fair review of this movie can be given without knowing what being part of an abusive family who has barb-ed each other constantly is like. In fact, there would be some members who would have PTSD.
Look up "narcissistic abuse" on You Tube. You'll see that many families act even worse than these characters did.
The problem with reviews is lack of knowledge. I'm sure the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" featuring sadistic slave owner Simon Legree seemed "unrealistic" at the time too. But it WAS realistic. "August, Osage County", is for many who grew up in these kinds of houses, just "a little too close to home". If you were a scapegoat of an abusive family, you might even find the movie to be "sugar-coated".
"Affliction" is another movie that isn't "pleasant", but so real for so many.

It’s unrealistic in the sense of how over the top it was handled, it’s not that what’s being said is unrealistic it was the delivery.

Whoever says that the characters in this movie are not believable or are over the top has never met my family! I know all of these characters because I lived with them, myself included. Secrets can tear families apart viciously, and even kill, and I've seen this happen. My impression is that the critics come from relatively stable families and have never been close to a dysfunctional one with deep secrets. And good for them, if that's the case, but the result is you don't get to appreciate a movie like this. In regard to the play, I have never seen it, but based on the film, I would have to agree with the critics here that I question why it won a Pulitzer.

They’re meh because they’re comically over the top, it wouldve been wonderful on stage but on film it has a sense of slightly cringey mugging. Julia Roberts I think was the most successful but when she had her over the top moments

@@uhuhuh1966 Meryl's performance does feel like a caricature of addiction. Still a fantastically acted caricature, but also too much of a caricature to feel genuine. I'm always pretty harsh on addicts in movies and TV because of being an addict (recovery, but always will be an addict).

what a terrible review. basically, these people didnt like it bc there was no protagonist. no 1 to cheer for, no light in the darkness that was this family. that's 1 of the reasons why this movie is so good. it pulls away from the average movie formula that we are custom to seeing these days. there is no story to this really. what you are witnessing in this movie is a twisted family gathering. the acting is outstanding. we all know ppl in our family who somewhat fit the profile of these characters. is it a little unbelievable at times? no. its not. if you like movies, go see this film. don't listen to these people.

These reviewers must have been drunk when they reviewed this movie. Cartoonish? I thought the characters were SPOT on and extremely realistic. It wasn't a movie about having a happy, Disney-like ending. It showed how messed up the human condition is, how BS "family values" illusions distort the REALITY of dysfunctional relationships, and how addictions (including alcoholism) are insidious and damaging. The acting was superb. A perfect DYSTOPIA of the "family values" MYTH.

  • @barbiewalker6702

I am missing something here. Did they watch this movie? First, Chris Cooper was named the patriarch instead of Sam Shepherd. Second, they couldn't remember that Benedict Cumberbatch's character was called "Little Charles." Little Tom, Little Bill? The fact that he could turn the switch from the cocky Sherlock Holmes to play this character....WTH. No layers? I thought every character had depth and it was superbly done. This is the epitome of a dysfunctional family, and most of us who are part of one can keenly identify with Letts' epic work. Not every family is The Waltons.

I know the flood of comments have already said this, but:
You seriously missed it on this review. I understand it's personal opinion, but in a team of three reviewers (one of whon seems to have not watched the film) you have to step back and review the movie for what it is. It's not a narrative or a comedy, it doesn't try to be. It's a screen adaptation of a stageplay about a dysfunctional family living in the Great Plains coming together and what happens when the only thing holding them dies

These critics are crazier than the mom in this movie. I never heard of this movie, accidentally ordered it on demand instead of watching the trailer. I normally would never watch a movie like this. I was stunned.
    1. Streep : these guys talk about how she wasn't good in this movie and her character is unrealistic. I loved this movie because there was no lesson to be learned. Sometimes life has no lessons. Real life is not a movie. I have seen a few crazy family who were "intellectuals" and were just as shocking. I say since real life is not a movie, then making a movie that is not real life means it prob is more realistic or probable than the majority of movies. Streep is amazing in this role. AMAZING. Who gives a f--- if you didn't think there was a deeper meaning or lesson.
    2. Roberts: watching her play this character was really hard for me because I am used to seeing her play certain characters. Her departure from the typical characters she plays, while unexpected by me

I think anyone who finds the characters cartoonish or considers the dialogue comedic probably had a slightly too cushy upbringing. I saw myself and my own family in multiple of the characters if not all of them (admittedly a somewhat dramatised version but nonetheless an authentic representation of what happens to a family after generations of conflict, struggle and abuse.

    • @uhuhuh1966
      @uhuhuh1966 4 роки тому

It’s cartoonish and comedic because of the delivery, not the actual dialogue on the page. The topics are very real things, and these arguments happen all the time in families...however the way it was performed was way too over the top to be on film or to be portrayed as realistic. This is an adaptation of a play, and on stage this style would’ve worked beautifully, but on film it definitely robs it of the dramatic weight that it was going for

Seriously are these even critics? Meryl Streep was amazing. Julia Roberts gave the performance of her life. All the cast done so much justice to their roles. To me this is the best film produced in the last 10 years. And I have rated this movie 10/10. I guess this is the only movie I have ever rated that high besides The Godfather.

Come on now that’s a bit much, I agree they gave good performances but this was way, way too over the top to be taken that seriously. If this same performance had been done on stage maybe I would consider it one of the best plays I have seen, but on film it comes off cartoonish

  • @felixkim750

Considering I was exactly not a biggest fan, I thought there would be something wrong about her performance before watching the movie since I'm reading 'over-the-top' thing a lot around here. Tomorrow I was able to watch August : Osage County finally, I thought she was remarkable. It's the best performance I've seen from her after Devil Wears Prada. Now I agree you have to gain certain experiences in life to understand the movie, otherwise it can come across as overstuffed sometimes. My mother died of cancer a few months ago. While looking after her in hospital I spent a lot of time among cancer patients. They really have those mental issues that was portrayed by Streep so convincingly in this movie. Now I don't know if she had studied cancer patients or not, but the hysterical mental situation and lost self control, the complexity everything looked so convincing to me. The thing that seemed to be scenery chewing and over acting, was necessary for the character. I think she's in a stage of acting where general viewers cant reach but trust me she knows what she's doing and so do her co-stars.
Julia Roberts, Julianne Nicholson and Juliette Lewis were also very good. The best performance I've seen from Roberts.
Now I know Streep wont win this year because she'd won 2 years ago, otherwise I would have rooted for her. But the fact that Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams being considered over her sounds ridiculous to me and the late Streep backlash seems very unfair because this woman is getting better and better with age in my opinion, people just have to widen their range of experience to understand her work. The only performance close to her this year I saw was Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine.

Well this movie is exactly what my toxic family gatherings look like. I've been trying to diminish my presence for years, circumstance can make it very difficult to avoid. The hosts don't understand because they haven't lived it. This kind of family exists. Mine is far more cruel. At least in the movie, the sisters have each other and little Charles is a kind soul. Remember the scene where they made fun of the one vegetarian? Well my mother, knowing I am a vegan, fed me stew using beef broth without telling me and I was sick for days after eating it. Let me tell you that's just the tip of the iceberg. I hope no one experiences the cruelty a family like this can inflict on someone.

Everytime any movie critic says this movie is “not good” in any way, it’s because they haven’t experienced a turbulent childhood and bad family dynamics. If you have had difficulty in your family relationships with a touch of mental illness you 100% will get this movie and resonate with it on such a deep level.
I absolutely loved this movie, every bit of it. Every character did a phenomenal job. This is what crazy families are like! And so to say that this movie is not believable is pretty naive. Those who haven’t experienced severe trauma will never get it.

To all normal people who aren't fat liberal film judges: this movie is funny, a little sad, a little weird, it has sharp twists, it has wide coverage. This movies makes you feel like you're in the middle of it! You go from feeling sorry for them to feeling uncomfortable because of tension, to laughing hard, to empathizing with them - then you flip through the above again and again, scene after scene. I actually make people watch this movie- I like watching them react. Everyone I have made watch this movie seem to instantly claim it as one of their all time favorites. It is one of mine

This same performance and adaptation on stage would’ve been amazing, but on film it’s impossible not to laugh at, which robs it of the dramatic weight that it was going for

He's the perfect example of one of those critics that thinks just because they're a critic they know how to criticize everything else in the world. I will say he is very rarely right.
