So far, almost all critiques I've seen or read about The Lone Ranger complain about how the movie is more about Tonto, or that the Lone Ranger is being portrayed as inept and lacking the respectability he originally had. It baffles me that literally none of them got the actual intent of the movie. It's not *supposed* to be an actual origins story. It's just a BS story, told by Tonto, to make himself look good. Of course he's gonna make the Lone Ranger look inept, and make himself look like the main hero. When he ignores the questions the kid he's talking to asks about plot holes in his story, it shouldn't frustrate viewers but amuse them, because it's clear then that he's just making stuff up. This should *not* be taken seriously as an origins story, but just a fun romp inside a complete BS story, told by a mischievous sidekick.
Not telling you that your arguments are hollow but for silver age comics fan having the movies being about the sidekkick is kinda of a giant middle finger to the audience. Still enjoyed it at the first watch. The script was a poor excuse to give more exposition to Johnny Depp, the ''real big star'' of the movie. Would he was casted as the Ranger himself that would be a totally different movie. The legitimate rage against is source material caused. Killing the mains vilain or making him a canibal for example. Also remember that John Reid rolled with Tonto for years and we STILL call him the Lone Range!
I get that people are upset about it not being a movie mainly about the Lone Ranger. What I was referring to was the people who say things like "WTH? The Lone Ranger would never do that! This is supposed to be an origins story??? They made him into an idiot! Tonto has to save him from everything!", pointing out plot holes, that the movie "glossed over", etc, instead of understanding that it is NOT an origins story, and that Tonto glosses over plot holes on purpose. If they were just saying they're upset about it not being an actual origins movie, and just a movie about Tonto making up BS about the Lone Ranger, that would be fine. I'm just baffled by the amount of people who take it as an actual origins movie and rant on that.
I really appreciate the review. I grew up on Lone Ranger radio and TV shows. I used to sneak-listen to it when I was in a kiddie hospital at 7 (I was there for 10 weeks), and it came on about a half-hour after lights-out. It pulled me through! To think that a studio would spend over a fifth of a billion dollars to trash a heroic duo makes me ill.
The problem with The Lone Ranger is that the people who made it clearly didn't care about the actual source material. After watching the movie, I looked up articles on the original character and everything listed there was barely even hinted at in this film. It literally was a third rate Pirates of the Caribbean movie with "insert here" gaps to make it a Western. Which could have been fine...had there been something to give the film weight. The first Pirates had a sense of emotional depth because it made Jack Sparrow a sympathetic and relatively grounded character, which the sequels went on to turn him into a caricature. The problem is that Tonto is merely that caricature with an Indian accent and none of that endearing depth to start us off. Armie Hammer didn't help playing a bland and one dimensional good guy that diffused any hope for chemistry before it could even spark. Most of all though, in spite of a fairly good technical competence, The Lone Ranger's script and directing are all over the place. They are aiming for tones and demographics so broad that it couldn't decide what to do. Some scenes come off as brutally realistic that when it reverts back to Looney Tunes levels of slapstick, it is jarring and ineffective. Being two and a half hours didn't help, as they threw in too many underdeveloped villains, supporting characters and subplots that did nothing to enhance the story. It's such wasted potential, because there could have easily have been a good movie here. As such, it's just a nicely crafted but long and lethargic exercise.
Listen to the original radio dramas. The move had no connection to the source material. Which is why it was so strongly disliked. The elements that made the lone ranger good are absent. In fact, no elements that distinguished the lone ranger from any other western hero made it to the adaptation.
Wow. People today would rather trade up great writing, character development, atmosphere, direction, acting, and an overall fun ride for cheap thrills... like hearing The Lone Ranger theme?? Is that really the only reason you people went to see this movie?? Of course this is gonna be an origin story. There's no way to tell the story of The Lone Ranger for a contemporary audience. And, when I first saw this film at a midnight screening, I saw young men 25 and younger applauding in the end. So, I really will never understand the hatred for this film, other than expectations that were just WAY TOO HIGH for any film to meet.
My husband and I loved this movie. I saw it for the first time last night. It was hilarious. I think some people didn't like it because they were expecting it to be about the Lone Ranger they grew up with on TV and were insulted by his characterization in this movie. If you get away from that issue, this movie was clever, funny and had a lot of great action scenes.
Great review. Was really disspointed and confused at constantly dissing Arnie Hammer's character when the actor and character has strong heroic qualities. Joyless is exactly right. It seems we are not allowed to be inspiring, heroic and hopeful anymore (example: Man Of Steel) -only cynical.
I love long films that really spend time exploring extensive plot lines and developing rich character arcs. So I have no problem sitting through a movie that is 2 and a half hours long, or longer. But, "The Lone Ranger" is not one of those films that needs to be 2 and a half hours long, because there wasn't enough complexity in the plot or any great dimension to the characters that warranted its 2 and half hour running time. It just seemed like a film where they didn't edit extraneous material
Ah. thanks. 'Wasn't able to catch that. Honest mistake. I guess the probability of someone not knowing about the 2 actors' previous films together just didn't struck me as being impossible. I appreciate the non-troll response (unlike some people here).
The main character never seemed to get his legs under him, acted like a dork most of the time. There were a lot more laughs than I expected, but they seemed very reminiscent of the pirates movies. Depp was clearly the main focus and that was a mistake. The tragedy in the movie countered the humor to really kill this movie for me. I wanted to like it, but they stopped me from it.
They LOVE to tear down the over-popular. Johnny is riding an incredible ride of popularity due to his Johnny Sparrow legend. Hollyweird: They'll kiss you one moment--slap you down the next. Depp RULES Hollywood. Women love' em and men (real men) respect him. He's funny, strong and tender--the Ultimate Man.
The major problem was it seemed to have no idea what kind of movie it wanted to be... there's no consistent tone, with brutal violence alternating with goofy comedy and comic book-y CGI stunt sequences, Johnny Depp's offensively silly Tonto (who was basically Jack Sparrow in war paint), and the most needless framing device I've ever seen. It had enough pretty scenery and flashy images to keep me from getting too bored, but the stupidity and worthlessness was just overpowering.
Indeed! I like westerns and at first wasn't thinking the movie would be any good, esp if Depp is not playing a pirate and he's been in so many movies that I think its enough. So I'm sooo damn glad that I was totally wrong about the movie! It was wonderful and I'm glad to see Depp play a role in a different prospective as a plains indian and did beautifully in portraying the prospective. For it was very depressing on his end! Our masked hero was truly a lawman and love him! Gotta see again!!!
It's not boring..it was So funny and enterteinement ,I really liked the movie and I don't understand the hate of the critics with Johnny Depp..it so unfair!
The first 20 minutes and the last 20 minutes of this movie were great. The action was top notch for these combined 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the remaining hour and 40 minutes should have stayed on the cutting room floor.
When I first saw the coming attractions to this about a year ago I thought, "you have got to be kidding". Then recently I saw an scene with J. Depp doing dialog and thought maybe this might be okay. Yeah, it seems to stink so I'll pass. What is curious is all the toy promotions behind this film, specifically LEGO. From what I am hearing, you wouldn't take a child to see this for the violence level of the film. Great review.
Armie Hammer's full name is Armand Hammer. Named after his great-grandfather but seriously? And no matter how good of an actor he may be, I can't see myself saying "I'm going to see that new Armie Hammer movie"
Completely agree, without a doubt this movie is one of the worst western movies ever made. It showed no relation with the original TV show, it's story was ludicrous.
I didn't think it was a bad movie, but it wasn't great either. I have seen better and more interesting movies with less action. The build up is slow, but I didn't mind it, it was charming and I liked the main character. Johnny Depp was ...well Johnny Depp... In the end the movie is a bit forgettable. I'd give it an 6.5 out of 10. So it's worth a watch.
I enjoy What the Flick a lot, but as a Native I'm pretty disappointed no one even mentioned the blatant racism of casting Johnny Depp as an indigenous person.
That's not true..the movie is great and you don't realize of the time when you are seeing it and Johnny did this movie because he liked the character Tonto and he knew the big risk..he doesn't care about the money,he wanted to do it anyway!
Lets not forget that the damsel in distress didn't morne her husband's death for a minute before she was swapping spit with the Lone Ranger (her brother in law)- classy. And how about when the Lone Ranger didn't deem Tanto worthy enough to save when he was buried up to his neck even after Tanto had saved his life numerous times before- WTF.
Great movie. I was surprised. Perhaps a bit long, but that rarely is a bad thing by itself. A bad movie which is long is worse than a short bad movie, but being long by itself doesn't mean anything.
So we have found one of the 4% from Rotten Tomatoes. Glad someone liked it. Guess there is always an audience for any film...and that in itself isn't a bad thing.
The problem with this movie is simple. It was popular before the advent of superheroes.. This movie is simply outgunned by the Avengers and Man of steel
Ugh... Against my better judgement after listening to the critics, I went with a friend who was dying to see this. I think Disney was trying to create a new franchise after Pirates ended and failed miserably. They should have taken lessons from another successful franchise patterned after radio serials: Indiana Jones.
Now personally I enjoyed the movie but if its not doing to well in the movies it's because most people did not grow up watching the lone ranger like my father did instead of watching good show like that kids are now prone to watching crap like how to rock, regular show, ANT farm etc. but it's true what my dad said he is 49 now and he grew up with the lone ranger. If it not be for him I would no know who the lone ranger was. I give this movie a 10/10. But remember this is my personal opinion so d
Funny how you say it as if like they haven't been in a movie together in a long time (and that often); Dark Shadows [2012], Alice in Wonderland [2010], Sweeney Todd [2007], and does Corpse Bride [2005] count?
i dont usually fall asleep in a movie but dis one did i woke up when that iconic lone ranger theme playd i hope pacific rim dont make me sleep again tomorrow.
I Agree with these reviewers. This movie wasn't good, it was entertaining but without a doubt this movie is one of the worst westerns ever made. It had no relation to the original TV show, the characters weren't like the original, and this movie was just too silly. Granted it's a Disney movie but it's live action, the silliness isn't necessary. It's okay to have a few laughs but still. Plus they're clearly trying to turn Tonto into another captain Jack Sparrow which obviously doesn't work.
Jack Sparrow, is that you I see under that make up? Wow, Johnny Depp, what range you have. (I miss the days of Chocalat. He was so good in that film, and even then I saw glimpses of Jack Sparrow.)
It looks like it might be a fun popcorn flick....that is what it promises to be....and if it does what it sets out to do well I might give it a look see.
Epic in the length? Epic in supporting the Dead Crow Society? Max Factor White Make-Up? I only jest, my friend. At least it's better than sewer-features like the "Saw" series.

Alonso, does this guy like anything? Ben you mean the film makers decided to tell a story from the beginning and not drop us in the middle of a story. An then decide with 2nd or 3rd movie to tell the origin story. Holy shit what a concept. It's a fucking movie just sit back and watch it.
Who cared is Armie Hammer's face was hidden. Not all people go to watch a movie just to drool over someone. Geez, how is that even relevant? Not all movies are 'eye candy'. If Channing Tatum (God forbid) played the Lone Ranger, he's STILL wear a mask. it's part of the character.
well man, i agree, i wouldn't go to a movie if it had been on 40 minutes. i only went because i like bruckheimer. but man this was bad. i thought bruckheimer is one of the cool cats like stanley kubrick, boy am i wrong, he only make stupid shooting movies. not like stanley kubrick which makes good movies that make the brain thinking of stuff.
Ed Wood was a sincere misunderstood man. Compared to our stream of crappy Movies that have come and gone? Give me Plan 9 From Outer Space any night! (But please come dressed as Vampira! I'll bring popcorn!) :)
Dapp has a nak for taking a classic movie and Fu*k it up. Stop screwing with the classic movie Johnny Dapp. Anybody call say OK what if Batman had a jet pack under his cape and live in a penthouse so he can just jump out the window and catch bad guys? that not Batman that somebody else. mabe "That Jet Pack Man" not Batman
Iam with you i enjoyed it as well and had a few good laughs. So people say the old was all great etc.. so i thought ill youtube it.. and omg that really sucks. thankgod they did some beter job on this job. only thing i agree on is the guy stays a dork/nerd to long. before he really becomes the lone ranger(last 25 min)
So far, almost all critiques I've seen or read about The Lone Ranger complain about how the movie is more about Tonto, or that the Lone Ranger is being portrayed as inept and lacking the respectability he originally had.

i liked the movie
I saw it today, and the end was the best part

I should add though, that there were parts that were depressing and make you feel ashamed of the greed and ugliness of mankind...
Man, you guys are derps. I thought the movie was great.
The only two things I liked about the movie was James Badge Dale and Ruth Wilson. Both of them are great character actors and very, very underrated.
I love long films that really spend time exploring extensive plot lines and developing rich character arcs. So I have no problem sitting through a movie that is 2 and a half hours long, or longer. He has great taste which means he probably would've panned this movie.
I think this movie is awesome the entire time, armie hammer and johnny depp are a great pairing, the music is awesome, and the story is facinating
Ah. thanks. 'Wasn't able to catch that. Honest mistake. I guess the probability of someone not knowing about the 2 actors' previous films together just didn't struck me as being impossible. I appreciate the non-troll response (unlike some people here).

Agreed. Screw all the haters, this show rocks! I love all the critics!
Alonso is always fucking fantastic. One of the most charismatic critics in the world.

What I love is the voices in the background taking over the hosts. Great professionalism. You guys are better than this.
I loved this movie. I find it stupid how critics seem unable to see things from all angles

Christy looks just as extraordinarily beautiful as she ever has.
How, and why in the world, would anyone mess up The Lone Ranger.
Before someone judges another person''s movie, they should ask themselves if they could have done better, given the same resources
I apologize. Johnny is great. No offense to the Legions of Deppers. He thought he was making a statement for Tonto and more power to him.
Lets not forget that the damsel in distress didn't morne her husband's death for a minute before she was swapping spit with the Lone Ranger (her brother in law)- classy. Disney should make a movie with Tonto and Jack Sparrow.
Now you're putting animated ads at the bottom of the screen, like on TV??
Great movie. I was surprised. Perhaps a bit long, but that rarely is a bad thing by itself. A bad movie which is long is worse than a short bad movie, but being long by itself doesn't mean anything.

I can see it now, a re-imagining of Episode I with Johnny Depp as Jar Jar Binks
*wakes up screaming*
Yeah... I just saw the dead bird on Johnny Depp's head, and I knew that it was gonna suck.
Ugh... Against my better judgement after listening to the critics, I went with a friend who was dying to see this. Ben's hilarious "WOULD YOU FUCKING SNEEZE DURING FUCKING PopTrigger?!"
So this is just like Lone Rangers grandson's movie adaptation, The Green Hornet?
i dont usually fall asleep in a movie but dis one did i woke up when that iconic lone ranger theme playd i hope pacific rim dont make me sleep again tomorrow.

Jon Hamm as Lone Ranger?
I've never understood the "fuck the critics" mentality. I fucking love these people. Film critics are my version of stand-up comics.
Jack Sparrow, is that you I see under that make up?
Wow, Johnny Depp, what range you have. (I miss the days of Chocalat. He was so good in that film, and even then I saw glimpses of Jack Sparrow.)
Are they ever not going to describe a film they dislike as "joyless"? It's getting pretty old.
why is it all of a sudden these critics hate johnny depp
have you seen the lone ranger? why would you even think that?
We Miss You, Matt Atchity.
The Lone Ranger Trailer...with the William Tell Overture!
Much, much better direction!
What a really underrated movie. When I went to see it I loved it!
please ignore these dummies this movie was pretty good,They are just trying to hurt johnny Depps career every since he made the tourist with Angelna Jollie i believe Bradd Pitt had a hand in all this and pays these people off,,Depp is a great character actor something we need more of, I liked dark shadows I liked pirates, and I liked this I didn't see much resembelence in captain sparrow and the Tonto I thought Depp sounded alot and paid great tribute to the late jay silverheels,,,
Ben actually watched and reviewed a movie? Holy crap....is the world coming to an end?
Despite their review, I'm going to see it this weekend. But for one reason--DEPP
I've been thinking about seeing this film. Thanks for the review in helping me decide.
if they hated it here... its probably a good movie
Congratulations, Alonso Duralde on your marriage. :D
With that sort of juvenile logic every film must be a masterpiece in your eyes. Go ahead and enjoy Battlefield Earth again.
They go after the silver, because the bad guy is with the silver, Ben. Did you really watch the movie?
to me this convinces even more but already knew that armie hammer is not right 4 batman/bruce wayne for reboot no no non
why?
It does have the worst timed joke i've ever seen. The indians attack and gets slayed completly. It's a pretty rough scene, and the very Next scene is a horse standing on a stone with a hat on, and Depp says something funny. Worst timing ever.
Alonso, does this guy like anything? Ben you mean the film makers decided to tell a story from the beginning and not drop us in the middle of a story. An then decide with 2nd or 3rd movie to tell the origin story. Holy shit what a concept. It's a fucking movie just sit back and watch it.
but still it doesn't prove what you say. so it's irrelevant.
I'm just glad it wasn't directed by Tim Burton.

Too bad Roger Ebert didn't live to dump on this film.
This review is too long. They all hated it. 30 seconds each. Max. Done.
As someone who respects Native Americans, I am deeply embarrassed by Johnny Depp's half-assed attempt at an authentic accent.
I think Armie Hammer should have played Superman.

GREATEST. SHOW. EVER. SERIOUSLY.
Ben is looking his best. So handsome.
You weren't the only one.
Jesus Matt takes 4000 years to make a point sometimes
That statement is quite accurate.
