If you can go back quite a ways in years regarding a Lego Parts with studs opposite each other depending on which way you look at the park might be considered top and bottom is there is not very many but there were a few even back in the day I remember the old wind-up motor story about this at the end to.
The winding Keys did have four studs on top and bottom of the key for wanting the motor.
The other one that Springs to mind the original light grey / old Gray some people refer to them as piston Ron ends not sure exactly what how to describe this had studs opposite which is also how the original Pistons were attached back in the day I use both of these to invert studs here and there and also there was not very many options for studs not on top building but there were a few back in the day and of course you did have the Technic bricks to do this as well but in the opposite direction but I got creative back in the day of course and yes of course people line up using so-called illegal building techniques all the time yeah sure if you lost something together long-term might do damage but still is being creative nonetheless.
Also someone did a test with the fights shoved between studs and left it there long enough to see if damaged was done permanently and yes there was the Peace one-upping warped permanently so that does kind of put this to bed as to why it's an illegal building technique but then again they did shove plates in there between every single study that was feasible to do so but it was a good test to see what would happen sorry don't know name of the channel and or the video perhaps if somebody Vines this or is aware of it my 10-foot this hearing comments for others link to video that is it would actually really show what is the issue and might help with some of the age-old questions and so-called illegal techniques and why it can really happen and yes totally agree on clips and plates and other techniques like this clips and tiles I broke a party are they doing this and these were new ones not somebody that been in my collection for years have not sworn off doing this yet but would avoid it and also some parts with the eclipse the older ones were a bit worse for taking apart and reassembling over and over for example those flying pieces some of those tend to get damaged easily so this on one of the other channels for Lego and what they had done is typically would leave them on a bar piece as a flag and just leave them assembled to avoid breaking them if you've got enough it'd be worth doing I'm considering doing this myself.
Since plenty of the parts available my collection so far.
When going through something or winding up getting pressed together or otherwise but by accident in the process and didn't realize that so many things are compatible with Technic gears such as 111 round plate stacked make a gear rack and the ones with the center hole opens up possibilities for mechanisms that would probably not be possible otherwise and and ways that would work much better than others and more compact as well.
And also using an axle and a worm gear not as a rotary element but as a linear element as well.
Hand idea to do this for a semaphore for Lego trains!
Could we use either one of those techniques pretentiously even as well.
Regarding the LEGO whynot motor spoke about earlier with the whining key portion of things.
I remember as a kid I first saw this I think it was Ben KB Toys back in the day potentially but I do remember this was Oxmoor Mall in Lewisville I had literally just bought it opened up box stuck the wheels on grab that winding key I was sitting on the bench at Oxmoor Mall and send it down the floor from that bench.
Place looks quite different now and ironically there's now a Lego retail store there was my first time going last Christmas.
Been there twice now.
Also ditto with Bricks & minifigures in the vicinity.
That was my Christmas for last year $100 plus budget for anything Lego awesome.
Yeah in my forties so it's still in the hobby have been what seems like from day one!
Also at the same mall I do remember there being when those Lego displays they had for example The Monuments in and More in Washington d.c. much much more.
Right down to the Liberty Bell.
I remember there was a competition to guess how many parts was in hey structure which was in front of the same toy store which I referred to earlier.
One of the things that was awesome to behold was the one by one windows the old-school ones that were included in sets like the yellow Castle.
Probably sometime back in the 80s or thereabouts not sure what the year was exactly one of the things is that how Lego designers were not allowed to cut or modify brakes or anyting however lighting was being done that was not Lego which holes were drilled and much more so yeah broke the rules there so if they can do things like this so can we
Funnily enough I use the technique at 3:44 for the cylinder spaces for my Lego steam trains which allows me to use the mailbox piece to make the underside along with some more technic stuff.i use the holes presented by the pieces for a steric purposes while allowing me to easily attach it to the underside of the main frame of thebuild
3:38 This technique is not only "illegal", in that it stresses the technic brick, but it also will not work in most cases as shown. The height of the technic hole is actually slightly lower that a SNOT stud height, meaning that the piece will not line up properly with the surrounding build. instead, just use the antistud on the back of another headlight brick. This also allows you to chain multiples of this technique together
of course it stresses a brick the definition of an illegal technique by an actual Lego designer is a technique that stresses and can lead to the breaking of a Lego piece so him saying its illegal implies it stresses it
@@alpha00z26 I'm saying not only is it illegal, it is also doubly illegal
@@ethandanskin17 but the thing your saying is double illegal is the definition of normal illegal
@@alpha00z26 there are 2 potentially illegal building techniques here. The first is that forcing a studded surface into technic holes causes stress on the pieces. The second is that the heights of a technic hole and a SNOT hole are not the same, so the pieces will be misaligned. 2 separate illegal techniques.
I've used this technique before. It is as you've said, but the difference is small enough that it works for a lot of circumstances.
That chainsaw piece at the thumbnail is so nostalgic,i had the gray version of it,i miss when ninjago sets use this piece
They still use it it’s just less common
I think the last set that had it was one of the 2019 or 2020 police sets where the criminals cut down a tree
Yeah
same
It was also in legacy sets like zane’s epic battle set it has the piece at a grey color and I bet the thunder raider has it aswell
I rember lego chima using it and aaaaaaa
I still love how certain building techniques are called "illegal". Makes me feel like I'm living life on the edge.
Well, illegal in terms of LEGO means that these techniques can literally destroy the pieces over time.
@@maxxor-overworldhero6730 I didn't know that - thanks for the info :)
@@d.w952 No problem.
Tiago Catarino, a former LEGO designer did a video a couple of days ago here on UA-cam explaining why the illegal techniques are called illegal.
@@mikosoft in case anyone wants to see it ua-cam.com/video/jWtZUzkvQ2E/v-deo.html
The orange, yellow circular thing at 2:08 does not work! It will come apart if you move it.
Indeed it seems like there are no interconnections between each stack of wedge tiles. You just get 18 separated wedge stacks. I can imagine it is very hard to build this without moving it.
1:20 is so big brain, I would never thought of building that way ever in my lego building career
I think at 4:03 the concept is cool but the side effect is illegal 😳
I was looking for this comment XD
I don’t see how anything there is illegal. The pieces are aligned to be able make that shape, and the pieces on the sides are only connected by one stud.
@@Pandacalifornia u missed the joke.. look in the middle of this build... The cross...
@@Niko-sv9gr Yeah I figured that out later since everyone kept mentioning the same one.
*distant Germany anthem playing*
If you flip the first build with the studs facing forward it looks like a cute robot with treads
1:18 green pieces are not actually connected to grey ones, so it's impossible
Can't wait for 500 iq techniques
that ball of flowers and boat studs is just delightful. Doesn't work if everything's in line properly but with some tilt the studs inside all mesh nicely. Doesn't quite form a rollable ball but would be great for the head of a pillar/bollard or a puffball or part of a creature
1:35 that one is actually illegal. It stresses the technic connector slightly by jamming a closed stud into it. If you use a technic brick however, one that has a hollow stud stop, this becomes legal since the hollow stud allows the technic connector to have its relief. Refer to Tiago Catarino's video for that one.
Crazy studf
So the right one works since the jumper plate stud is hollow ?
@@pierrekimmel7364 Yep. As is the new 1x1 double-height plate. Or a hollow round Stud…
@@kailahmann1823 thanks :)
iirc it's legal for one stud to connect to a technic hole, but not two or more
I used the "stud on all four sides" technique to build airplane engines. Worked well!
My biggest complaint about a lot of these techniques is that, yes, they are pretty cool, and yes they get studs on opposite sides of each other, but that's all they do for the most part. I've used a couple of these when actually building or designing, but the rest are like thought experiments. Not really practical outside of the initial concept.
True. The one with the claw and circular pieces does have a spot for an axle in the middle, so maybe you can do something with that to attach technic pieces or something.
annnd most are illegal placementsanyhow!
Video suggestion: So I just finished building the newest Ecto-1 and while building I noticed something in the instructions that I don't think I have ever seen before. Earlier in the build it has you put two 2x2 yellow round bricks underneath the front fender but later the instructions have you remove those two pieces to use for part of the roof decoration. I don't think I've ever seen instructions have you remove pieces before, could you do a video on what sets (if any others exist) have had you remove pieces from a build as part of the instructions?
[eyes bug out] That has to be the weirdest building step I've ever heard of.
Love your content
5:01 sadly that's the old variant of the piece, the newer one from the last few decades has a larger middle so it does not actually work
Yep, this only works with the old (and fragile) a Version or the early 1980s.
@chopper same tho I don't know it's the older variant of the piece......checkout ''thedarthdesigner'' striker...... i'm trying to build the crows or common remotley operated weapon station it uses the old variant of the piece to connect it to the 1x3 tile so tnx for telling ur opinion:)))
Amazing content thanks
No problem
Whaa
Amazing work once again 👏
4:08 has an interesting shape in the middle
4:37 I have done that technique TOO many times. Mostly for custom lightsaber making. And I have done 4:45 for random building techniques. I also did 5:57 bc I was just gathering lego pieces and made the one from 5:57.
Cool video thank you!
#brickstory
Sponsor ends at 3:37
If it’s so illegal to make double sided bricks, why doesn’t Lego produce them themselves
I've tried snot with 1*1 technic brick and two 4070a and a 1*1 plate - and found it can be replaced with 2 modern 36841 Brackets and 3 plates as used above. It gives more versatile colors and part variations on the side opposite to technic brick.
5:26 The Singapore Architecture set uses that technique, albeit with a different piece, to stabilize the center of the 3 Marina Bay Sands towers.
The idea of building techniques being illegal randomly because Lego doesnt like them is just flat out incorrect. If a building technique is illegal, it means it damages the pieces, its that simple.
4:27 I belive its possible only with the old tighter clip piece not the regular one that you get nowadays
I'm actually building an MOC at the moment and utilising this technique a lot. It is a bit looser then a connection than say a headlight brick, but it works surprisingly well, especially when a lot of technical components are grouped in a small area.
4:00 is just straight up a swastika
That was a genius idea for your sponsored segment! Nice job!
More of these kinds of vid plz 🙏
4:36 Lego used that technique
2:11 with this technique, there's no clutch power between the 18 individual stacks. Without any hinges added, they're just loosely standing next to each other.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
There is friction if you press them well
Nice video spit man
The chainsaw build would be great for interior / exterior or creating wall to make rooms out of a bit larger space
Wow that's amazing
Great, thanks
Can you make mor Lego Star Wars videos please 🥺
This was the best ad for Keeps I've seen on youtube! I'll def recommend it to some minifigs I know that have lost their hair!
I have another way to build on both sides ( with anti-studs )
Use a jumper plate and get a circular brick with a hole in the middle like this ⭕️ and put the jumper plate under the circular brick and the circular brick upside down
4:15 makes me feel nostalgic lol
I used to make those stuff since i didnt not know much about lego
I've tried the second building technique
Collapsed my whole moc😔
2:10 thats a solid connection, or is it...🤔
So cool,keep up
Fascinating... some clever connections there.
Genius... I like this video!
What I want to know about the chainsaw is whether you can place it such that multiple chainsaws act as gears against each other.
A lego UA-camr with a sponsor.....now that's badass.
I took several screenshots of this one 😊
I love ur vids pls upload more often the vids are great
0:47 i think it can be used at mini halftracks
wouldn't the one triangluar one at 1:10 not work because of the studs on the 2x2 corner pieces poking on the inside of the shape?
If you put a gray stud into a black technic brick (the one that's like a normal brick but with a technic hole in the middle) it's a pretty cool camera desigh
I wouldn't recommend 4:10, because clips tend to break easily here. I tried it and now I have ptsd from ever using clips the other way they were intended for said build even tho it wasn't sometimes illegal
6:43 those rounded tiles are called "Boat Studs"
Cool Vid.
The Empire can’t buy a Keeps subscription for their stormtroopers but can build an explosive reactor to their Death Stars that can easily be accessed?
I use the circular stud with pin and hollow stud as an exhaust on a couple of my Lego cars
I remember building an unofficial LEGO set based off of Among Us. It used one of these “build on both sides” techniques in some of the task stations.
1:17 ok but the green parts aren't fixed.. btw the top build, how does the green parts not fall.. ?
These pieces doesnt hace studs under, their have the negative to put pieces with studs..
I don't understand how can this holds..
Oh.. f... ok.. still continue writing for others who would understand: the green parts on top aren't attach but their will hold just the down part and cannot get out because of the others.
The bottom one holds the top which blocks the top one.. that holds the bottom, both holds opposite by exterior so are fixed together, ok.. why not, but seems a bit fragile, a bit weak holding, but original !
*golf clap* Wonderful creations, it just continues amazing me how many wonderful ways people use Lego pieces to create things like this.
In the old days the Lego company's marketing slogan was "The only limit is your imagination".
6:22 is also possible with the red pins (BL-No. 313) from the very old hinge plate pieces! It's a great building technique to get reverse-studs in a small build
I used that technique for building the ball, with the inverted cirular tiles, flower pieces and 1x1 brick with five studs. I left one side off, though, so that I could attach them as spherical fuel tanks on a model of NASA's InSight lander. One thing, though, the version you showed doesn't hold together very well. There's another variation where you rotate the tiles so they all slot together snuggly.
4:25 *steals your circular Lego brick rods*
3:59 yoo i remember doing this when i was a kid
4:11 I actually tried that exact same technique last night, but using the newer version of those clips. Is that legal???
Interesting! I think it's legal.
It is not, as those are plate sized and not tile sized. While they are more versatile, that is not one of their uses
@@gold571 Okk... thanks man! I was going to use that technique in a build but you saved me!
@@EMDWDG4 no prob
@@gold571 👍
4:41 I made a Lago mini gun design using this
Very interesting! Could you tell me the number of the LEGO model that appears at minute 7 and 38 seconds? I like 🙂
At 2:07 my xbox locked up so hard that it shutdown completely. I have to say that is the best time event ever
2:15 ITS THE COLLUSEUM
💪😁🔥🔥🔥 Cool video! P.S. I've entered here as... yt is recommending my videos as proposed for this film viewers and I was curious why...
The dark side of the force is a path to many abilities, some may consider to be unnatural
Instead of using one by twos for the modified snot bricks, using 1 by 2 tall slopes, you can make a throwing star
If I have an illegal building technique not shown in the video (or anywhere else as far as I've checked), how do I get to star in a future video (as in how should I send it to you, via email or social, even though I know it's not gauranteed to star in a video)?
2:16 that just looks illegal somehow
That’s not illegal, but the pieces aren’t actually connected, some else pointed out.
lego really hire quantum designers, ALL the pieces fit perfectly even if it doesn't seem like it
4:43 actually? The Lego Luigi’s Mansion Entryway set uses that type of build to simulate a torch in one of the steps!
The corks on lego mc potions use the same technique
where do you get your music from?
The clips on is used in a Lego xwing set
4:43 this actually appears on the trouble in tatooine lego set
Can you show us something else than double sided bricks though?
I'm going to the lego store rn...
spitbrixs how do i show my idea?
5:31 better off using a 2 stud axle!
Oh wow this almost looks like its not even Lego but the technics are really cool
Might try some of them for fun since I am sorting all my LEGOs per set.
Missing 8 Minifigures. Yey me.
i did a like 😄😃😀
The thing I can’t understand is why some techniques are said by LEGO to be illegal. I can understand some independent competition build scenario banning some techniques, but lego is about designing, building, and problem solving. Their original idea was to encourage new ways of doing things. If it works, it’s good. I can understand in a competition scenario, a technique that puts too much strain on a piece is not permitted, but your own blocks at home, do what you want. Damn, in the 80’s, I needed a specific shaped brick (One that would never be made due to the once in a lifetime unique need.) to fit a space and join two other oddly positioned pieces, so I literally took a craft knife to one piece to make it fit. My block, worked for me.
Its because they destroy the bricks
@@gold571 And the ones that don't? What about the ones that fit just fine, don't strain the bricks in any way, but are just not "normal" We didn't become an alpha species because we were narrow minded, Dark Ages excepted, so non damaging techniques should be allowed. At home, with your own blocks you have paid for, do whatever you want. It's your money.
@@gaijininja those arent illegal, but its best to research
Where do you get your Lego Ninjago old mini figures
4:42 check out white house set, it is there.
Lego Minecraft Potions use that too.
I'm not the only 1 who thought that that hinge and lever piece looks like the squirrel from Ice Age.
1:57 few?
I'd like these videos more if instead of renders, you got your bricks and made whichever ones you had parts for.
you should be arrested by the LEGO Group for this Illegal Masterpiece
First! Great vid, as always!:)

im sure somewhere in the the church of the lego they're witch-hunting for guys like you. These techniques are so much big brain that it's like lego witchcraft
