I agree 100 percent. After converting all my Eve devices to matter it was a struggle to get Homekit running stable. It seems the Thread network takes forever to fully recognize all devices. With devices not responding and waiting hours the network slowly seemed to rebuild itself. Sit tight everyone wait a while hopefully things get better in the near future.
I noticed the same thing if someone unplugs one of my thread smart plugs, or manually turns off a light bulb switch, the thread network takes time to rebuild and during that time, some automations are slow or don't work.

Thank you so much for this video. This just solidifies my decision that I won't be touching Matter with a 10-foot pole; at least for now. I'll review this again this summer. Right now I will be sticking with an Apple Home only for now.
Frankly, most of the problems you described have already occurred on my network before even updating to Matter. Starting with the 16.2 updates, my thread network has become very unreliable, and 16.3 made it even worse. I've found in general that my network is better behaved wgen an Apple TV is the hub rather than a HomePod mini. But even then, I have a number of devices that are intermittently unresponsive, and some devices (both HomePod Mini and Apple TV) that spontaneously start playing media. Yet. :) Your experience, that of other Smart Home Content Creators and the feedback from those on your Member's Discord Group have left me quite happy with my decision to NOT jump on the Matter Bandwagon as of yet. Great video. Thanks, as always, for your content.
Thanks for watching! Yes, often us 'crazy ones' who are so eager to try the new things, are also the ones with a lot of accessories and more potential for things to go wrong. So sometimes waiting is definitely a smart move.
Thanks again for the heads up on Matter integration. Since I am only setup in HomeKit and not seeing myself to move into any other ecosystem anytime soon, there is certainly no advantage to migration. But given the matter support available in HomeKit, I will like to try adding some matter devices to the HomeKit if such device no native HomeKit support. Another concern that I have is: since HomeKit matter support will be communicated through home hub only, is that defeating the actual matter advantage of meshing network? So, with HomeKit, it is still best for thread devices with native HomeKit support, right? If so, I would hope the brand such as EVE and Aqara will continue there native support for HomeKit as addition to their matter support.
If a product supports Matter, it supports HomeKit natively. If you're only concerned with using HomeKit/Apple Home, then just getting products that "Works with HomeKit" or "works with matter" should be all you need to worry about. Either is fine and either is native HomeKit support.
After I upgraded to Matter, the EVE door and window sensor it "self-destructed". I tried to reset and add it again, but it didn't work anymore. I had an error code (HFErrorDomain error 6.0.1.) Now I'm waiting for the new one replaced under warranty to arrive. I won't try again, especially since I don't even need Matter. Thread is enough and works perfectly.
Thanks, Shane. You've convinced me to shut off auto firmware updates on all devices and wait it out for a while. I'm almost all Apple anyway, with the exception of a few Aqara devices. But the Aqara devices work just fine as is through the camera hub I have. So I'll wait for more YT videos throughout the year and see if things improve.
So am I correct in my thinking that one of them best features of matter is so that we don’t need multiple hubs to connect our devices that are sprawled throughout the house? For example, security cameras at different ends of the house needing that connectivity? From your report, I’m not encouraged at this point.
Hi Shane Could it be that Apple is playing up? We've not got any Matter devices nor have we hot an upgrade option on our Eve products …and still I had to set EVERYTHING up again because our Original HomePods keep asking "Who's speaking?" My problem started before 16.3. I had hoped 16.3 would have fixed it, but it still occurs, albeit sporadically. Thanks for another informative video.
Shane: looking to use a shortcut to have eve plug turn on for 2 hours, 3, 5 or 7 hours (controls a room heater). Using a menu in a personal automation shortcut for the selection, and repeating a wait time of 10 minutes to obtain desired total wait time. Problem is, once iphone screen locks the shortcut fails. How to pass the selection to a Home automation where the timings are not device dependent? Perhaps idea for a video. Thanks.
I do not plan on updating any of my existing HomeKit devices to Matter. I will only use Matter to add devices to my Home App that I do not currently have if there is not an official HomeKit option.
Hey Shane! I’ve got a question.. I recently moved, and haven’t used my devices in about 6+ months. I’m rebuilding my smart home and have run into a snag. For some reason any of the 2 matter devices (at least I think they are the only two) won’t connect when adding them to HomeKit. First issue was with a brand new Nanoleaf essentials light, still haven’t gotten it to connect.. my most recent issue was with the eve energy - I connected it without issue to my home, then got a notification for an update and upgrade to matter.. I did all that, and now it won’t connect 😅
hi shane, i got firmware update for my m1s hub to matter same with your experience now i have 2 hub in homekit : 1 original and 1 matter version i have question : 1. as the matter version lose the function of security system, will the original keep the function if i'm not deleting it from the homekit? 2. why is the accesories bind into the hub not following it into the homekit? is it the child accesories that i have not yet get matter support?
So, to sum up, if our current Apple HomeKit setup is working perfectly, and we’re not planning on mixing Smart Home ecosystem, there’s no added benefit to update HomeKit devices to Matter?
I think we need a small QR Code printer so we can print matter barcodes on "upgraded" equipment - when we are satisfied that its safe to do so. Yes I know there are apps to record the information but there's nothing quite so convenient than a barcode on the actual device.
maybe that's the point.. running Matter .. and Google .. and Apple .,. and .. and .. and ... all while tryingo to upgrade old devices plus add new native devices .. just too much for all systems to juggle? I haven't gone near starting a 'smart home' as I had NO intention of juggling a variety of systems and hubs. For me it was always going to be one or none .. and hopefully Matter can make that a reality.
Hi Shane. Great video as always. Super helpful. I’ll be waiting at least a year before I attempt to go down the Matter path. It’ll be great once fully vetted but don’t need anymore headaches at this point. 😂 Two questions: 1. Did you create a video on integrating the Google hub discussed in this video? I’m guessing I’m overlooking it because I can’t seem to find it. 2. Did you happen to hear anything about the firmware fiasco from Linksys that happened about 3-4 weeks ago? It was for their Velop line of routers and caused huge HK integration problems for folks like me. I think you use Orbi so I know you weren’t impacted but might be a topic worth talking about. Thanks again and keep up the fantastic work!!
Thanks for the comment Bryan. I'm not sure what you mean by integrating the google hub. Do you mean integrating it with HomeKit? If so, it doesn't work like that. Basically I can just run these voice assistants side by side and my Matter devices can be paired to any. So I have the option to use Siri or Google when giving commands, etc. But google speakers won't show up in HomeKit and HomePods won't show up in Google. I'll look into the Linksys stuff. Thanks!
I have to admit that after updating to 16.2 and taking the option to "Upgrade" to the new architecture before Apple pulled it my HomeKit setup became almost unusable with multiple reports on my phone that ALL my home hubs were unavailable (12 of them) and then a few mins later they would all be back again. Frequently a HomePod Mini would be promoted to the Connected Hub in preference to an ethernet connected Apple TV. Struggled with it for several weeks and now I've deleted all of this, created a new Apple Home and added everything back again. The moral of this story is that we are likely to get "pain" due to updates from the many vendors involved even if we don't upgrade to Matter specifically. Certainly the HomeKit update was a very frustrating exercise.
This has been my exact experience this week. Completely random unresponsive errors on the unreliable 16.3 new HomeKit architecture. I really don’t want to factory reset everything but I’m close to doing it.
@@briancrink I’m reluctant to tempt fate - but doing a full rebuild using a new Home name has apparently fixed all the problems I was experiencing. Hope you have a similar experience
Hi so I have a little problem with my homepod mini. I created a shortcut for my morning briefing and the speak text automation just plays from my phone instead of the homepod (i have the shortcut to change playback destination to homepod enabled) any help?
The firmware update or the Eve Outdoor camera broke 2 devices. Eve replaced them, Thant you Eve!! The 3rd one is working just fine WITHOUT doing the firmware updaeI I recommend NOT upgrading the firmware on this device.
Maybe.... when Apple eventually actually update to Thread v1.3.0 (as required for the patch release of Matter....) - maybe, things will settle down. When you connect everything to the Apple Homepod first, which is NOT running v1.3.0 of OpenThreadBorderRouter, then you lose the ability for devices to roam across border routers, because until Apple update the Border Router, devices attached to it, are stuck there, your Google Home can't join the Thread network that the Homepod has created. v1.3.0 is supposed to fix this limitation, so that you have ONE thread network with multiple border routers (regardless of who makes it). Right now that's not happening for you, your Google Hub is generating it's own Thread network because it can't join the existing one. Additionally, because the Google Home can't join the Apple thread network, then all attempts to communicate with the thread devices, have to be routed via the Homepod. This is quite obviously not the preferred way of doing things. Each router should be able to talk to the Thread network directly, if it can't - then it is ONLY a matter controller.
Sounds like a mess at the moment! I only want matter so I can build my Apple HomeKit. I want nothing to do with the others, I’m just happy to get way more options for HomeKit, finally!
Just figured out an issue I had figured I’d share. Aqara malfunctions on a Homekit router if you change it’s access to anything other than “not restricted” than an issue on iOS 16.2 prevented me from added accessories. 16.3 released fixing everything for me but than I changed my router settings and it fried my Aqara again (thus discovering the problem). Aqara requires constant pinging of Chinese servers or it malfunctions.
Hi, Do you know any solution for Home 16.3 (HPmini, iPhone) on MacOS monterey and older ? Since i updated i don't get a connection anymore with my mac.
I’ve been looking to replace my Wyze Sensor V1 because it stopped working and they don’t make them anymore. But right now it seems Matter is too new. I primarily use Amazon Echo devices but I have my eye on the Samsung Smart Things Station.
Hello Shane. Do you know if there’s any Smart Home product that could help me operate my door buzzer system remotely? (to open and close the intercom door)
Hi Shane, I am a bit confused. Please note that I'm not an expert at all. I have the following setup: - a lot of Eve Thermo for the heating - an Eve Motion Sensor - a lot of Philips Hue bulbs and lightstrips and a motion sensor - an Apple TV 4k & an Eve Hub, also a HomePod mini. All are working fine with the Eve and the Hue apps, many of the also in the HomeKit. What should I do? Upgrade to matter or wait? I don't even know if the firmware is already available for these products... Thanks in advance for your (or anyone's) kind reply 😜
Like I stated in the video, "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Unless you have a really good reason to upgrade your devices to Matter, I'd hold off for a while.
Any idea why Aqara Temp. sensor is deleted automatically - accessory deleted - message from Hub? Changed the new battery, but the same. Shows up to date. Could it be because my hub have 24 devices? Or temp sensor is broken? 😢
I’ve been having issues with the Eve smart plug and Home Kit being consistent. I do have an IPad as my hub given my Apple TVs being out of date. I’m looking at either a new HomePod or a new Apple TV.
Yes, I'd definitely recommend a homePod or Apple TV as your hub. And once you upgrade to the new HomeKit architecture, you won't be able to use an iPad as your hub anymore.
Thanks for giving it a try, Shane. Seems like a bumpy road ahead, but nothing a few updates can't solve. Getting several different entire ecosystems to work together smoothly is a massive challenge. Btw, I think you may need to get a dedicated warehouse for home automation testing. After watching this video, I fear that if any more problems pop up, your wife is going to want to kill you 😆
@@MKizzle2906 Your not upgrading your home necessarily. Just the devices. Your homekit home already supports Matter. You can use Matter devices and old homekit devices together in the same home, no problem.
Only Eve app and Smartthings recognize my upgraded eve matter devices. Apple homekit recognizes one and Google home recognizes the other one. I expected them to share all info on thread with each other but not so far.
Multiple SSIDs/Access Points is going to confuse matter over Wi-Fi/Ethernet depending on your network setup. Would be nice if some made a matter discovery app like the browse the thread network in the eve app.
It shouldn't As long as everything is on the same broadcast subnet, that should be easy enough to cope with, because matter relies on mDNS. The only problem right now, is that Apple are not on OpenThread 1.3 - which has a few fixes in place, one of which is registering what services devices are offering in the Border Router, so that mDNS requests across the Thread network are not necessary, matter controllers will simply ask the Border Router "what services does that light provide" and the router will respond with it's cache of services. The other major fix is to allow all the Open Thread border routers to join the same Thread network, instead of Apple, Google, Amazon etc each creating their own Thread network.
I wish in order for things to be called “smart” it would work with a smart home / hub as an industry standard to earn that title I can’t explain how much anxiety it’s been trying to figure out how to get all my devices under 1 entity instead spread across 30 different apps or at least someone crate an launcher that’s compatible with every app. Ik it’s all minor things that are virtually unimportant but with ocd I get this compulsion to have everything together and even with services like Home Ass I still have entities that are incompatible with that networking so so matter what corner I face I’m still stuck.
@@ShaneCreates Hmmm.. Thanks for responding. Im going to try to stick to matter+thread on any of my new devices. Im waiting it out until everything is out of beta. Ill be watching your videos for updates!
Right now, companies create products, and have to add all sorts of additionally bloat to their code to make them work with each different ecosystem - AND they have to pay to certify the device for EACH ecosystem too. That is obviously a waste of resources, very expensive and time consuming. With matter - companies will code once, certify once, and it will work with all ecosystems that support matter. Which will continue growing - because the smart home industry has not seen the multi billions that was predicted coming in, and have realised, its because people find it too confusing, and there isn't exactly a huge amount of choice out there. Matter is a last attempt to make the smart home accessible to everyone.

Your experience, that of other Smart Home Content Creators and the feedback from those on your Member's Discord Group have left me quite happy with my decision to NOT jump on the Matter Bandwagon as of yet.
Either is fine and either is native HomeKit support.
sup shane upgrading to homekit as soon as i get my hands on a i device ipad' homepod ' or apple tv 4k 2022 version starting with my smart by vizio
Thanks for watching! And the great thing is that Aqara devices work with Apple Home already, even without Matter, so you should be good!
Matter will be great, eventually! I love getting great advice from you. This was an excellent video as always. Eric
Thanks for watching Eric!
So am I correct in my thinking that one of them best features of matter is so that we don’t need multiple hubs to connect our devices that are sprawled throughout the house? For example, security cameras at different ends of the house needing that connectivity?
From your report, I’m not encouraged at this point.
Thanks for this. I’m holding off then. I can wait. I’m not in a hurry. I can wait years if need be as long as they have this “matter” ironed out. 😂
I got a smart thing hub and it worked good I even got ring stuff working without me doing anything
Hi Shane
Could it be that Apple is playing up? We've not got any Matter devices nor have we hot an upgrade option on our Eve products …and still I had to set EVERYTHING up again because our Original HomePods keep asking "Who's speaking?"
My problem started before 16.3.
Thanks.
Refer your question over to Reddit in the iOS shortcuts subreddit
@@briancrink Good idea - thanks
I did all that, and now it won’t connect 😅
hi shane, i got firmware update for my m1s hub to matter
same with your experience now i have 2 hub in homekit : 1 original and 1 matter version
i have question :
1. as the matter version lose the function of security system, will the original keep the function if i'm not deleting it from the homekit?
2. why is the accesories bind into the hub not following it into the homekit? is it the child accesories that i have not yet get matter support?
So, to sum up, if our current Apple HomeKit setup is working perfectly, and we’re not planning on mixing Smart Home ecosystem, there’s no added benefit to update HomeKit devices to Matter?
Precisely.
I think we need a small QR Code printer so we can print matter barcodes on "upgraded" equipment - when we are satisfied that its safe to do so. Yes I know there are apps to record the information but there's nothing quite so convenient than a barcode on the actual device.
Unless said device is a bulb high up inside a recessed fixture in the ceiling. 🙂
maybe that's the point.. running Matter .. and Google .. and Apple .,. and .. and .. and ... all while tryingo to upgrade old devices plus add new native devices .. just too much for all systems to juggle? I haven't gone near starting a 'smart home' as I had NO intention of juggling a variety of systems and hubs. For me it was always going to be one or none .. and hopefully Matter can make that a reality.
I think I will delay upgrading for as long as possible, as all my stuff works great now and I don't want to mess it up :)
Hi Shane. Great video as always. Super helpful. I’ll be waiting at least a year before I attempt to go down the Matter path. It’ll be great once fully vetted but don’t need anymore headaches at this point. 😂
Two questions:
Thanks!
Not everyone can just set up a smart home. Hopefully Matter smart devices will get better overtime and solve that problem 🙂
Hope you have a similar experience
hey can u make a video on setting up home with bluetooth. trying to setup home kit without wifi bluetooth only or zigbee
Are NEST products getting upgraded to MATTER? Either as an OTA update to existing products or new ones?
Maybe.... when Apple eventually actually update to Thread v1.3.0 (as required for the patch release of Matter....) - maybe, things will settle down.
Thanks for your explanation!
Sounds like a mess at the moment! I only want matter so I can build my Apple HomeKit. I want nothing to do with the others, I’m just happy to get way more options for HomeKit, finally!
Having issues too, Shane, but mine is with Phillip Hue hub.
Sorry to hear it. Thanks for sharing.
Yea I am not upgrading to matter or using this in matter. HomeKit works just fine
Will I loose the security feature on Aqara M2 ? if i move over to matter, currently linked via homekit
I have the following setup:
- a lot of Eve Thermo for the heating
- an Eve Motion Sensor
- a lot of Philips Hue bulbs and lightstrips and a motion sensor
- an Apple TV 4k & an Eve Hub, also a HomePod mini.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks, I’ll do so 👌
Any idea why Aqara Temp. sensor is deleted automatically - accessory deleted - message from Hub? Changed the new battery, but the same. Shows up to date. Could it be because my hub have 24 devices? Or temp sensor is broken? 😢
Hey Shane! What about that Apple Keychain service connected to the Aqara hub? What is it?
I’ve been having issues with the Eve smart plug and Home Kit being consistent. I do have an IPad as my hub given my Apple TVs being out of date. I’m looking at either a new HomePod or a new Apple TV.
Yes, I'd definitely recommend a homePod or Apple TV as your hub. And once you upgrade to the new HomeKit architecture, you won't be able to use an iPad as your hub anymore.
Nest and Ring would be great if they would become available in "Matter".
Bro I just received my
Hubitat evolution. I have Philips wiz bulbs. It sees them for HomeKit I’m the Hubitat but it says not compatible wth ?
There are reported issues with HomeKit and matter. Apple is likely releasing a iOS 16.3.1 update to address it
Thanks for the heads up Shane. Quick question, how were you summoning Siri by saying “Siri” and not “Hey Siri”?
I edited out "Hey" so that I wouldn't trigger your devices while watching the video.
So matter doesn’t illuminate all the different hugs?
How many times have you said Hey Siri to your Google Home Hub? 😂
Thanks for giving it a try, Shane. Seems like a bumpy road ahead, but nothing a few updates can't solve. Getting several different entire ecosystems to work together smoothly is a massive challenge. Btw, I think you may need to get a dedicated warehouse for home automation testing. After watching this video, I fear that if any more problems pop up, your wife is going to want to kill you 😆
I had to reboot my Apple TV and reset my Eve Energy before it would update.
Do I have to change/buy new device to use matter ? Or all of them will have update and work well ?
Some devices will get updated to matter (like Eve and Aqara shown in video). Others will require new devices to support matter.
@@ShaneCreates so after I upgrade my home to matter, does the old homekit device still work well with the new matter home ?
@@MKizzle2906 Your not upgrading your home necessarily. Just the devices. Your homekit home already supports Matter. You can use Matter devices and old homekit devices together in the same home, no problem.
Only Eve app and Smartthings recognize my upgraded eve matter devices. Apple homekit recognizes one and Google home recognizes the other one. I expected them to share all info on thread with each other but not so far.
So you have to upgrade each eve device independently? That's intense.
@@AndrewJonesMcGuire great reply the kind of info I was looking for.
Should’ve went with Amazon, Google just isn’t up to snuff when it comes to automating your home!
Why did they take the aqara app off the Google Play store?
You used to manually go through your teenagers phone reading their texts etc? Wow, congrats on the damage you've done to your relationship with them.
This post is two months later in April 2023. Any major Matter updates or changes from then and now?
Do you know if Homebridge will support matter devices?
I think just as it is now, it's going to depend on the individual device manufacturers and the plugins that are available from the community.
Is it matter+wifi that is becoming unresponsive or are you noticing matter+thread devices also getting unresponsive too?
All matter devices were giving me issues at some point. Thread, ethernet... I haven't setup any wifi matter devices yet, but will soon.
@@ShaneCreates Hmmm.. Thanks for responding.
Im going to try to stick to matter+thread on any of my new devices. Im waiting it out until everything is out of beta.
Ill be watching your videos for updates!
I don’t understand, the M2 have already supports Alexa, Google and HomeKit. Why doesn’t need matter?
Right now, companies create products, and have to add all sorts of additionally bloat to their code to make them work with each different ecosystem - AND they have to pay to certify the device for EACH ecosystem too. That is obviously a waste of resources, very expensive and time consuming. With matter - companies will code once, certify once, and it will work with all ecosystems that support matter. Which will continue growing - because the smart home industry has not seen the multi billions that was predicted coming in, and have realised, its because people find it too confusing, and there isn't exactly a huge amount of choice out there. Matter is a last attempt to make the smart home accessible to everyone.
so right now i need 2 Aqara M2 hub to get the matter and the security system? i hope it will be fix in a later update
My guess is that "security systems" aren't a supported Matter device type right now.
@@ShaneCreates hope it coming
for will build a "security systems" in homekit
Hope the g2h non pro will be updated aswell.
The Google Home Gen 2 (the one that tracks sleep) was updated in December.
@@AndrewJonesMcGuire I was talking about the Aqara hub but thanks anyway.
