  • I found some Lemon Placemats at the Dollar Tree and thought this would make a sweet little tote. It is already lined.
    This is another cheap, fast, and easy sewing project. I used 3 of the placemats to make this cute little 5 pocket tote. It only cost a little over $3.00 and takes about 30 minutes depending on your skill level.
    Here is a link for another Dollar Tree Project - STARFISH BEACH BAG video: • Dollar Tree Drying Mat...

    Hint: When back tacking on top stitching, on last back tack, stop somewhere in the middle of seam. This prevents weird rabbit ears hanging out at the finished edge. I find that it’s safer to clip very close to the seam itself and it’s invisible. I used to sew medical bags with loads of top stitching and taught myself to cut down the aggravation and time by ending a seam this way. I hope this isn’t offensive to anyone, just want to pass it on to all my sister seamers.

      i do that too. Was taught old school because im old! One teacher called them eyelashes if hanging off the edge. Cutting close on edge can cut through the backtack. but cutting top and bottom of seam its still held by the back tack stitches.

      Yes, I wondered why she started right before the strap instead of at the seam.

    First time watching one of your videos. Thank you for explaining it all so well! My mom tried to teach me some seeing when I was younger, but I didn't pay close attention. Now that she has passed I can't ask her those questions, but have her supplies. I'm trying to learn how to sew and videos like yours are helping me. Thanks for helping me to feel close to my mom and for helping me to take pride in what I can create with my hands. A tote like this would be perfect for carrying some of the water bottles and coffee thermoses I carry around in the car that like to roll around.

      Another place I have found beautiful cotton placemats was at Dirt Cheap. It's a closeout type store, like Big Lots. They sell lots of older Target items. During the strict mask-wearing time, I was desperate for 100% cotton and was able to find cloth napkins and placemats, there, that I took apart and made masks with.

    This was a great video. These would be great to make out of duck or ticking or even old jeans and donate to either cancer centers for people who have to come in for treatment. My mom had cancer and lived an hour away, and the hospital provided a nice van to people in the area. The radiation was maybe 25 minutes, then you had to wait for the others. This would be a nice tote bag for carrying their things like their phone or tablet, book, some people crocheted. Dialysis is about 4 hours. I hope you don’t mind, I will link your video, but I might put up a tutorial, because if I can do it, anybody can. Thanks for sharing, Patricia

    I have often looked at the lovely placemats in DT passed them by , I mean how many placemats do you need, other than covers for my Journals I make. I'll not be doing that again Love the tote.Great project supply carrier, thank you.

    Like the tote. Very cute.
    You can do French seam gussets. First sew the gussets on the good side of the fabric and trim them. Now turn it inside out and sew the gussets again. It will be clean on the inside and outside. FOR BEGINNERS, sewing on your sewing machine, some of your explanations were not on your video very well and your straps were not explained all the way, like when to turn down the one inch, like for a beginner.

    Oh, I MUST try this! As a total beginner, I can't tell what kind of fabric this is. At times, it looks vinyl laminated. Any hints about what fabrics are the easiest for a rookie would be really appreciated.

    • @mywithallmyart
      @mywithallmyart  3 роки тому

      It is not vinyl. It is probably a poly blend of some sort but it has stability to it. Quilt cottons are great to begin with. They don't stretch and it easier to learn stitch control with. Even the little fat quarters you can buy at Walmart are good for getting started.

    Sounds like your machine can use some oil. Have never heard a noisier machine. Sorry but some people might not realize what a difference more frequent oiling will make. Of course following your machine’s manual is advised.

    I love this idea and can't wait to find some mats for my grandchildren to sew together. But could you tell what settings you are using such as, where the dials are setting? How wide the stitch number is, how long the length number, what's the tension is set on. There may be a lot of beginners out there. (Like my grandchildren). I know it may seem overly simple to the experienced sewer but to some of us, it's not. Thanks

    • @mywithallmyart
      @mywithallmyart  3 роки тому

      Thanks for asking. I am using a straight stitch. My length setting is 3. The zigzag width is 4.
      The tension is set for medium weight fabric. i hope this helps!

    Did you have a piece leftover after cutting handles--wondering if can be used as inside bottom support--the way you would use a piece of cardboard to support bottom of gift bag. this video a year ago lol thank you so much I love this project❣️

    • @mywithallmyart
      @mywithallmyart  2 роки тому +1

      There wasn't any lemon fabric left. But there was a full piece of the lining. You could use the excess lining to reinforce the bottom. I am glad you liked the video.

    I just found your video while scrolling through UA-cam. I absolutely love this. I can see making these for some of my friends, and me too, for all the holidays. They'd make great lunch bag totes too. I'm just wondering though why you didn't sew the top section by stitching on the right side? My machine has a section that comes off so you could slip a sleeve or some narrow tubes so you would be able to turn things right side out and just stitch it that way. Would it not look the same? I don't sew often so I was just wondering if the finished piece looks different. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for the directions! It made things easy to understand!

    • @mywithallmyart
      @mywithallmyart  2 роки тому

      Thank you for taking the time to comment. I am so glad you liked the video. There is no particular reason that I stitched it from the inside. Machine also has that feature. It looks the same stitched from either side. And, yes they would make great lunch bag totes!!!!
