PMD 2: "Memories Returned" - (Piano Sheet Music)

  • Yet another arrangement 3 years in the making, culminating at last! In some ways I feel this song embodies the idea of your undying friendship with your partner far better than "I Don't Want to Say Goodbye". Great songs both of them, but the vast breadth of emotion this composition contains, complimented by its many musical variations (one of the reasons finishing this took so long was because of that!), really makes it hit home. I hope my transcription has done the song justice.
    Special thanks to the many people who have requested this song, including:
    Zekrom91872, IntenseClassicGamer, Yvette Wong, Raptormon OneThreeTwo, Noboby, Fisheh-Kitty, FlareCat, Jon Abhau...
    ...and last but not least, Whitehart!
    (the amazing fellow who created the thumbnails for my Gates to Infinity arrangement project!)
    Here is the Pokémon piano sheet music:

    And then after this song, then Bidoof comes and sees your partner, and then Beyond the Sky starts playing right when your partner says "B-Bidoof!.....Bidoof!....." and then starts breaking down crying. This is like my favorite game of all time.

      The ending? I bawled at the end of Explorers of Sky. Everything that my partner and I went through came rushing back and I cried waterfalls. I didn't cry as much at GTI because it wasn't actually death. In GTI, you were just going home. Although that was sad, it wasn't as bad as dying in front of your partner, and watching them cry because of what happened. I still cried at GTI though because of the Frism and how they all said goodbye, looking up at you. Both were well done, but I still prefer PMD 2 to GTI.

    • @teddy-beargamer6385
      @teddy-beargamer6385 9 років тому

      And I respect yours. I look at the ending of GTI in a new light now, although, PMD EoS will always be the sadder ending for me. You really learn to feel for your partner, and to watch him cry just breaks my heart. I think I'll replay GTI with what you said in mind, though. Thanks.

      +myName2243 / 1f1n1ty .....Well, I know that I'm replying to the half-year old comment, but I think you got something wrong about the story of EoS/T/D.
      The main character of the game (who you play as) is not supposed to be you (I mean the REAL human you).
      Why?
      He/she has a in-game backstory, vague memories (not yours as you said) of the "previous" life and he/she in fact is from that PMD pokemon world (in future).

    THIS GAME. THIS GAME. It's so good. Even though as a kid I couldn't beat it without cheating, and since then I lost my DS, this game was so unexplainably beautiful, and this piece is one of the reasons why Explorers of Sky is one of my favourite games of all time.

    Goosebumps, man. I don't think I'll ever love another game like I loved PMD Sky.
    All those feels, the epic adventures, the joy of exploring, the bittersweet ending and that incredibly, otherwordly gorgeous soundtack.
    Great re-arrangement, and that bit of game footage at the right moment was a really nice touch.

      Scuro1000 Thanks for the comment! It's so nice to see the fruition of my long procrastinated work be welcomed into such open arms. Timeless games deserve timeless transcriptions, I guess ^_^ (though I mean that more in the sense I had no sense of punctuality, rather than a presumptuous notion of anything I make ever standing on par with the original composition).

    THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!!
    I literally clapped after watching this! Half of my family were asleep but I didn't care! It was just so beautiful!!
    With a piano alone, you're able to compose a piece of music that entirely captures, and then *_amplifies_* the aspect of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon soundtrack, and that aspect is emotion!
    By far, you are the only one on the _internet_ who is able to do this!!

      I know what you mean. Four years ago I found his I don't Want to Say Goodbye arrangement, listened to the first ten seconds, got bored, then skipped to the end, when I found that ridiculous three part thing that sounded amazing. Then I listened to the whole thing, and here I am now, four years later.

    • @Bespinben
      @Bespinben  10 років тому +1

      Leo Riddell Guillemot Hopefully it was the volume of a "golf clap", haha! I'm really thrilled reading this. It's really quite challenging instilling that level emotion on my end -- usually a live performance is the key to that, but I don't have that luxury (well, I *could* do that myself, but then I'd be churning out these arrangements at a once every 2 months basis instead of once a week). Thanks again!

    I'm crying for two different reasons now. The raw emotions that this song brings to me every time I listen to it...

      +MegaLCRO If you ever want to play it on piano, just keep on going. Five years ago I first saw his I Don't Want to Say Goodbye arrangement, and I told myself I could never play it. I started playing piano little by little, and after three years of self teaching and a year of work on that piece particularly, I can play it now. even if it takes a year, it's worth it.

    A fantastic arrangement as always. It really does give off that special undying and eternal friendship to it, which in turn makes this theme so much more emotional. The original already was tear worthy enough, and I think that this one almost beat the original. Piano truly is a special and perfect instrument for these kinds of pieces.
    Amazing job.

      Thank you, truly. I'm very glad to hear that. It was really refreshing to do a song from Explorers, since I hadn't done one in awhile (or an emotional song, at that rate). And yes, the versatility of the piano to adapt to many moods and styles (especially ones with this air) is just one of the many reasons I'll never stop being fascinated by it.

    Wow, I'm so glad you decided to arrange this one. This is one of my favorites from the game, and I really feel like it goes as a set with the ending theme and the little coda to the story following the credits (there's music to that too, if you remember). Awesome job! I'm eventually going to play all of your arrangements together (perfect timing, too: I was having a bit of writer's block with a PMD story and this snapped me out of it). Keep up the fantastic arrangements!

    It's been awhile.
    Good god, is this a great way of really marking the adventure's end - a call back to all the good that happened in a world nearly doomed to paralysis. Definitely well arranged here, as it hits the highs with such force they scream at you with the same power and emotion found in-game. Also, the gameplay footage made the music really hit home and brought the slightly meloncholy yet very powerful and tearful joy the piece struck with originally.
    This is why I've still got a subscription to you after all these years. And seeing this come when you've left your hiatus is a fantastic treat.

    Many people think that Beethoven are the great ones,Mozart, and such. But this piece is so beautiful, but many would downgrade its status because its a video game sound track. Wow bespinben, you are an amazing musician! I know you didn't create this, but you did a wonderful job arranging it. I would never be able to play this, I'm too lazy. Beethoven is a better skilled composer. However he only had a Piano and an orchestra. He is a goal for people to achieve as he understands music masterfully without a textbook. Today we get a textbook to learn. This music is beautiful partly because of the evolution of classical music and culture in japan. Culture gives meaning for quality Japan is losing that. People nowadays have way more tools and knowledge of what is great music but they waste it. Pokémon mystery dungeon is an amazing piece of art and ITS FUN IT'S A GAME. Beethoven is a remark on how great people could be at piano even from a young age. He is a pianist and shunned in popularity compared to now. However I enjoy like you the feels of POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON!!!!! LET'S GO EXPLORING!!!!!! *Cries in de corner* T-T

      Ben Wilson Bespinben -- now offering free performance consultation!(The block chords aren't as intimidating as they look, but things do start picking up after m. 23, lol)I'm really happy that the section past m.50 retained the emotion I was trying to instill in it. The OST accomplishes this with some extra layers of instruments, but since I have only 1 at my disposal, some reinterpretation was needful. I mean, I can write "fortissimo, with great passion" all I want, but if the accompaniment I write doesn't reflect that, then there's no substance.While writing this piece, I was reminded of the fact the last time I played through the main-story of PMD2 was in 2008. It was really quite astounding seeing those old feelings resurface again as I watched some LPs to get in the right mood for arranging. Truly, the measure of something's worth is estimated by its ability to affect people long after it has since outlived its "glory days".

      pikamario123 Don't count yourself out just yet! The LH ostinato from the harp part at the beginning (D,E,D,A,D,E,D) is actually VERY similar to the 16th note ostinato in the full version of GtI's "Hope". In fact, they're even in the same key - D major. Cool huh?

      by the way... if i would be able to play these sheets , i would do it the whole day.. but sadly i need to wait a bit with it. the best ones are always the hardest ones...^^ but someday i will. but i had one question about your fogbound lake sheet. at 0:36 in your video the left hand plays some chords and needs to flip over the right hand. why is it like that? for me its by far easyer to do the right hand part with the left hand (so the left hand always plays the chord and then the background motif , which plays trough the whole song) and the chords , the left hand is supposed to play with the right hand. if you do understand , what i mean , id be happy about an answer^^

    A little critic with this is that the elegant sad parts are one or two octaves too low, they don't sound sad, but more like army marches. But this one is great as usual.

    • @Bespinben
      @Bespinben  10 років тому +2

      Thank you :) Which parts specifically do you refer to? M. 11-21 I put an octave lower to feel more "collected", and so that way when I use the higher register of the piano later it carries more of a punch, like a break in the psyche. That's how I always viewed the song - like a psychoanalysis of the partner's emotions.

    • @cantavanda
      @cantavanda 10 років тому

      Bespinben Ah, okay, thank you for sharing, that were the measures I referred to.

    • @Bespinben
      @Bespinben  10 років тому +1

      cantavanda Oh awesome! Glad we were on the same page, and we now are both cognizant of each other's... cognizance, haha. I'm not the only one with this interpretation -- check out LegendaryHeropon's "Life Goes On" (part 3/3 of his PMD2 medley), which also uses this choice in octave registration for this section of Memories Returned.

    I... have no words to describe this. It is quite obvious that you did not lose your touch in the two years break. I think you got better actually. The other ones, though great, sometimes went fuzzy the louder they were or got. Not always, but Happydragonite also had the same problem. Can you PLEASE do hope theme from PMD 3? There are only a few piano remixes of it. Not enough, no where near enough for a good song. I have a true friend that I love as a sibling loves another family member, he is not related, but a brother to me anyway, much like in this game. I have known him for 13 years. It will be 14 years soon.

    Usually, PMD music contains lots of motifs, especially near the end of the game, but the only recognisable riff in Memories Returned is the PMD main theme. I always wonder why this doesn't sound more like Don't Ever Forget...

  • @yannzhong8461
    @yannzhong8461 10 років тому +3

    Amazing, can't compliment you enough, really. Ever tried adding strings to your arrangements? Some pieces, I find, could always use an "orchestral" effect to them while keeping piano as the main instrument.

    As if this really needs to be said: _Gorgeous_. I couldn't have wished for a better transcription.
    I always thought it was just a ritardando when you changed to 9/8, but I like your version better.
    Edit: W-Wait, that one part was left out... What was the song you listened to to arrange this?
    Edit edit: Apparently I've been "disrespectful" by not acknowledging these few measures, but I can't find a version of the song with those measures missing. Where should I be looking?

      :O :O :O Greatest thing I've read all week!
      I keep a playlist with all the performances of my sheets I've found on UA-cam - currently it's at about 12 videos. So, I imagine it's mostly for personal use, though I could feasibly see something like this being used for someone's private piano recital piece (like Rock or somebody, haha -- not necessarily concert, but close!).
