    I can't tell the difference. And I do prefer when there is no mic on the scene to distract and specially when the voice over had the same sound consistency.
    Great video!

    I preferred the Azden for the top end which gives your dialogue more clarity, but the looks of the Shure. So top tip, look like a pro by having the SM7B in the video shoot but reord like a pro with the Azden providing the sound. ;-p Result! Fab video and a great idea Mark.

    I like to talk with my hands (typically not ideal for podcasting but VERY ideal for VO). I am a techie nerd, so I'm going to pick up the Azden and add it to my arsenal. Thank you for this great video!

    Couldn’t tell on Airpods as you switched at the start, both sounded indistinguishable. I could JUST tell when you put up Mic A and B (and correctly guessed which, due to a fraction more top end, but it was very close)
    I love my VideoMic NTG shotgun for its versatility.

      I found the sound was very similar on my Airpods Gen 2, there was more of a difference on my Rode Headphones.

    At least in the audio setup that I was using to listen to this, i much perfered the sound of Mic B in the test, i thought for sure B was going to be the SURE since it felt a bit more crisp and full, especially with him being so close, A had more ambient noise and i figured that was going to be the shotgun mic.

    I've been watching this video for the past maybe 6 days. After days of deciding which one was the best I decided to do one test, right now is 5:00 a.m. and I listen this in a noise cancellation headphones and I can tell you the azdem sounds wayy better, the shure have to much noise i cannot believe this. Waooo i will get the azden

    Microphone A sounded better. During your 'A/B' testing that began at time 4:10, the "A" microphone had more frequency content.
    If what you said is correct - that the Shure SM7b was the "A" microphone in the test - that's the one I'd buy.
    Although the Shure might pick up more ambient room noise, the loss of some frequencies that occurred on the "B" microphone was noticeable.
    The audible experience of losing frequencies is on a continuum, ie. on a graduated scale. To get an idea, a loss of a lot of frequencies occurs if you cover your mouth with a plastic drinking cup and start talking. People can still make out what you say but the 'muffled' sound is an extreme case of lost frequencies.
    So the "B" microphone was a step or two on the continuum towards 'muffled' - the dynamic microphone sounded slightly less 'muffled' but again, the "B" shotgun mic wasn't that bad, but the frequency spectrum of the "A" mic is preferred.
    I'm wondering if you re-ran the shotgun condenser mike without the foam cover if the frequency loss would still be there. Obviously, because it's a condenser mic, you generally want a cover to avoid over-emphasizing "P" sounds etc.

    I recently got Rode Video Mic GO II for this specific reason. Trying to move away from the podcast mic. Also, relying on USB connection instead of XLR connections. (simplifies the setup)

    Do you know, ive been thinking about this and for all my content. I use a shotgun just out of frame and i love the cleaner look.
    I've been slowly doing some podcasts and thought that I might need those types of mics, but its an expense that Ican live without.
    Thanks for this, although i do need a good mic arm lol

    What about room treatment with the shotgun mic? For someone doing a podcast in a living room for example, in a room with more potential for noise and reflection, do the mics also sound the same?

    • @gaborkiss1425
      @gaborkiss1425 8 місяців тому

    • @TheSkrylar
      @TheSkrylar 2 місяці тому +1

      @@gaborkiss1425 SM7Bs are dynamic microphones. They mostly pick up sound directly in front of them and background sounds will be very quiet if they make it in. The shotgun would still pick up the sound of a TV in the background. If you can't treat a room a dynamic is what you really want.

    I'm astounded at the amount of people that are so good with video and photography and yet absolutely terrible at audio. I'm not going to say you are terrible at audio because this video sounded great. I will say this though, on my s21 ultra I could easily tell the difference between the shotgun mic and the dynamic mic. I use a dynamic mic out of frame for everything and it works okay I guess. I'm getting into photography and I've been watching all the camera people videos. They all use a shotgun mic and most of them sound terrible. Personally I would use a shotgun mic only in situations that required it.

    Hello Mark, such a nice video as always !!
    Could you please help me. I need an audio system (mic + recorder etc), for run n gun documentary style travel filmmaking. I have been very confused. Could you please suggest me what's the best budget/semi professional system I should go for ?
    I need a reliable field recorder and mic with good quality with good connections (XLR). As, with my experience I found that this 3.5 mm TRS is not reliable.
    Happy new your to you and wishes for future endeavors !!
