    I really appreciate your videos. I'm picking up student lessons after 50+ hours of prior lessons some16 years ago. I was decent at hand flying the aircraft, but I struggled with (didn't enjoy) all of the planning and ground work needed. I'm hoping to get the PPL across the finish line this time around!

    Another great video. Thank you. I use the Easy Activate/Close from 1800wxbrief to open/close, activate, delay, or cancel flight plan via SMS. It's actually pretty decent.

    That GPM calculation is such a time saver! That's unfortunate my CFI didn't approach it this way as I was always struggling in flight coming up with quick precise numbers. Love your approach as I'm still learning as a private pilot. I'm working in getting my CPL now. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, they are very instructive!

    I have never actually opened up a VFR flight plan. And for the same reason: whenever I call up the FSS near my home airport they don't respond. The first time I talked to FSS was when I was asking them to help me with weather, and that was well after getting my private.
    But I *love* pilotage and dead reckoning. I really like how it makes me feel much more familiar with where I'm going. Unfortunately I've really gotten into a habit of just plugging my destination into the GPS and flying that. I need to get back to doing some P&DR flight plans.
    The one thing I did in my checkride that I did not do in my solo XCs was I didn't try to fly a straight line between my takeoff airport and my destination airport. Instead, I took headings towards waypoints that I could easily identify when I'm close to them rather than trying to find them from 10 miles away. For example rather than trying to fly KJQF direct KILM (my checkride XC) I flew along I-485 to KEQY. And then I could easily follow I-74 along a string of airports that made easily seen checkpoints.
    Does this add a little more time, distance and fuel? Yes: 11 nm, 5 minutes and 0.8 gallons. But man it reduces the stress level by TONS. As part of my checkride prep, my CFI and I flew this route and it was a lot less stressful then when I flew a similar route for my first solo XC.
    And when I flew this for my checkride, the DPE liked that I had a visual reference available to me for the entire flight, not just at the waypoints.
    Anyway I need to do another P&DR flight soon.

      Great comment! I don’t open up the VFR flight plans in flight too often, I think you can call and activate them too, but I wanted to show it in the video, but of course, I was let down because they didn’t answer. I know what you mean pilotage and dead reckoning is not used to often any more, but does make you feel like a real pilot when you use those skills sometimes. It really gets you looking outside and not relying on modern technology

      I use the easy activate/close from 1800wxbrief...to open & close, deactivate. or cancel the flight plan via SMS. It's so much simpler

    I make extremely tight tolerance tools. I constantly use a timer, because the machines cannot sit and also hold tolerance. We are all human, and forget to reset stuff and or start stuff. I use 3 timers simultaneously. 2 count up normally. I use one for overall time and another I reset. The third timer counts down, but then counts up, if it hasn't been stopped or reset. If I make a mistake on resetting the second one, it's simple math to see where I goofed. It was simple to set up, and easy to use. When I have a significant difference between the countdown and regular timer, then it immediately alerts me to some kind of resistance I need to correct (which would perfectly translate to winds or engine performance altering navigation). I can't believe I lived using a single timer. Great video. Keep it up.

    First, who is the guy in the left seat? Second, as a PPL myself, who hasn’t flown in 20 yrs your lessons are priceless. All I do now is MSFS2020 and use all the g1000 and FMC tools and none of the basics. Your lessons have inspired me to “Get back to the basics”. I still have E6B so, it’s time to use the sim to see if I am still a component PP using the sim. Thank you for all your contributions to the flying community both RW and Sim pilots.

    Your transponder has an automatic flight timer that starts on takeoff. Just press the function key three or four times to get to it. You don’t have to remember to start it.

      I typically calculate a 2-3 mile climb out on runway heading then I calculate an on course heading from there

    You said you picked Trophy Ridge as a way point because there "wasn't much out there." How about the town of Elgin right on the Kansas/Oklahoma border about 15 miles to the east? It's bigger and closer to your last way point (Bartlesville VOR) from which you could have flown a radial (305 degrees?) directly above the Caney River from Hulah Lake. I mean, if you're going to use a VOR radial for positioning, why not fly one to the next way point? Or just follow the river. Elgin also lines up nicely with your last way point "Bend in the road" which I think I would have named "Cowley State Fishing Lake" which is right beside it. I would think this would have greatly simplified your last two legs. But I'm not a pilot. Am I missing something?

      Great question. I’ve flown out there quite a bit Elgin isn’t really a town. It’s a grease spot in the road and is very difficult to finds I typically will use towns but now that one. Lol

    This may seem stupid but can you explain selecting correct Isogonic line is it closest or direction of flight?

      If there is more than one, I typically eyeball it and pick the one that looks closest. You could use a plotter, but to be honest it’s not going to make that big of a difference

    I realy like the old 172 and old GPS and wish You were the Flight instructor instead of That Rob Guy in MS flight sim way back when orrrr wish you were around a few years ago would have made my calculations alot faster.

      @@FreePilotTraining Turn-point is new term to me. I am more familiar with Checkpoint or Waypoint. If you use Waypoint, then your acronym could be WHAT. At the Waypoint, check/change Heading, Altitude & Time. That’s WHAT you do!
