Charlie Kaufman on I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Slaughterhouse Five, and Future Stop-Motion Movies

- With Charlie Kaufman’s new movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things now streaming on Netflix, I recently spoke to the gifted filmmaker about a myriad of subjects. During the wide-ranging conversation, Kaufman talked about making the movie at Netflix, how his work leaves a lot open for the viewer to decide, what it was like in the editing room, why he doesn’t get nervous watching early cuts of the film, who he trusts for honest feedback, the challenges of filming the long driving scenes, and so much more. In addition, he talked about what happened to his adaptation of Slaughterhouse Five with Guillermo del Toro, if he’s thought about making future stop-motion movies, his possible HBO limited series based on the novel IQ 83, and more.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things is based on Iain Reid’s acclaimed novel of the same name and follows an unnamed woman (Buckley) as she accompanies her boyfriend, Jake (Plemons), on a trip back to his childhood home to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis). Trust me, there is a lot more to this movie than what I just wrote and after you've finished watching you'll definitely want to talk to someone about it.

Interesting he references David Lynch, because I see a parallel between I'm Thinking of Ending Things and Mulholland Drive (Both of which I loved by the way) in that they are both better on a second viewing! It's like watching the replay of a goal, because you know the outcome, the second time round you notice why things happened the way they did!
Mulholland Drive and its theme of psychological disintegration after personal failure leapt to mind as I watched ITET. Many parallels in the way these films handle the interior collapse, for example projecting disowned feelings or experiences in musical numbers on a stage. A literary parallel a friend suggested to me is William Golding's Pincher Martin, one of the most insidiously horrific novels I've ever read.
When I was watching I’m thinking of ending things I thought there was something about the toad trip very similar to the last episode of twin peaks the return. There’s even a shot of the gas station at night with laura and cooper outside of the car, and the image of the ice cream store at night with them outside of the car.

The movie was also remarkably similar to Eraserhead in regards to meeting your in -laws for the first time. The mothers wacky personality reminded me of Marry's goofy father in Eraserhead. The whole mood was stilted and disturbing just like Eraserhead.
The scene where she first meets his parents gave me such intense Lynchian vibes. So glad to hear that it was all intentional.
Yeah for sure. I haven't searched alot of his interviews or discussions yet, but I definitely got a similar sense to many of David Lynch's work when watching this movie. Especially Inland Empire, which is a personal favorite & still towards the top of my list of "most frightening or scary" films, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things is very much a part of that. I can also understand people's comparisons to Mulholland Drive as well. Now I do really want to go back and watch a few of his movies I haven't seen yet.

In my opinion, Charlie Kaufman is a great writer, first and foremost. Whether you like his movies or not, they always give you a reason to watch them more than once to understand them. That's what makes them great films. Nobody in their right mind EVER says, "Hey, let's go watch that terrible movie we saw last night."
Oh. THAT's the key? U can't just suffer them once? My god...

If you only watched his movies ONE TIME, like Eternal Sunshine for example, and you didn't like it enough to at least watch it a second time, then you don't understand his films AT ALL and your taste in films really suck. I'm just curious, do you feel the same about David Lynch's movies?
@@evanpeltier Absolutely not and the comparison is absurd. That Netflix movie was a disgrace to anyone who ever worked on a student film. Pure reeking balderdash - entire 12 minute blocks reciting 'poetry?" The first HOUR in a CAR driving?? Horrible. TESTING THE PATIENCE of the audience like i've never EVER witnessed in my life. By far the worst movie i'd ever seen on Ntflx. Who u kidding?
@@PeterChoyce The entire film is from the imagination of the old man we see throughout the film. He is Jake. The girl named "Lucy" doesn't exist. The reason why most of the film takes place in the car is because the old man is daydreaming to himself, and his mind is very disturbed and restricted.
It's insulting to make the audience bear any of it.

Just watched this movie last night and can’t get it out of my head. Same happened first time I watched Being John Malkovich. Both films really got under my skin in quite a unique way I can’t fully articulate. Amazing but not a film I’d recommend to many people.

Fr he focused so much on technical stuff with one of the world's most thoughtful directors. This whole interview stays on the surface. Opportunity squandered.
The most dreadfully boring movie i've ever subjected myself to. It was like outtakes of outtakes, one long film of nothing happening and nothing to even ponder.

Nah, it's just that u have a high tolerance for pretentious bullshit. I mean, after the dreadful seemingly hours in a CAR, which is just BAD cinema, it got even worse. I could just hear Kaufman giving direction with those actors in the house "Stop! slow down! You're bordering on being interesting!" He cut the scene before any hint of wit could occur
I'm glad u can sit thru something so exasperatingly poor but don't expect that from a wider audience.
@@PeterChoyce the film is about much more than what is seen at face value when watching. Filming part of it in a car has nothing to do with it being bad cinema, you were just dumb enough to think it would be a straightforward movie which Kaufman never sets out to do.
