  • Brief highlights of the classic England v Brazil group stage encounter in the 1970 World Cup, as the holders lose to the eventual winners in a match particularly memorable for the contributions of Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore - includes Moore's memories of the game 20 years later, a short time before he sadly died.

    Everybody talks about the Banks save or the Moore tackle ; but for me , the pass with the outside of his foot by Carlos Alberto to Jairzinho was sheer class , as was Pele's nonchalant flick that tees up Jairzinho's goal .

    First of all Astle's miss came a few minutes AFTER Jairzinho had scored in the 60th minute !! I have been watching football for 56 years and this is STILL the best worked goal I have ever seen ! Tostao fends off Alan Ball and nutmegs Bobby Moore. He then dances around Brian Labone, leaving him sprawling on the ground. Moore comes back for a second bite. Tostao shapes to cross the ball with his left foot, steps over the ball, swivels and without even looking, crosses the ball into the penalty area. The incomparable genius (Pele ! ) pulls the ball out of the air with one supreme moment, killing the ball stone dead ! Two England defenders lunge at Pele in desperation..... but the ball has already gone ! Jairzinho receives the ball, takes one stride forward and rockets a thunderous shot into the roof of the net, past the oncoming Gordon Banks. Years ago I was watching the game again on video. I stopped the video at the point where Pele releases the ball to Jairzinho. The three Brazilian forwards are actually surrounded by eight England players, in and around the box ! England were a great team then and in all honesty deserved a draw, but that one unforgettable moment of sheer Brazilian magic was enough to beat them. Magnificent football !! Sublime brilliance ! How fitting that such a great match should be settled by a goal of such magnitude !

    • @ervineokuboh7459

      Yes you are right. Astle's miss came after Brazil were 1-0 up. A few minutes after he had scored to put Brazil 1-0 up, Jairzinho broke away on the right and threatened to make it 2-0. Bobby Moore tackled him brilliantly then calmly played the ball to Terry Cooper. Cooper hoisted a high ball into the Brazil penalty area. Everaldo made a complete hash of his clearance and put the ball straight to Jeff Astle. He probably had more time than he thought,but he snatched at it and his shot went wide when it seemed easier to score. That was England's last chance.

    Look at the build up to the goal, where Moore missed a simple tackle and clearance.

    A few things. Bobby Moore had his best game. Alan mullery worked his socks off marking pele. Beaten once and saved by Gordon banks. As an attacking force England were less effective. Yes ball hit the woodwork. Yes Astle should have scored but he was put on later in the game. Bobby Charlton never scored a goal in this world cup. He became a foil to be defended against as opponents rated him. Englands downfall in 1970 wasn't ability. It was a lack of firepower

    In fairness Astle played for an unfashionable club was brought on from pressure not because they wanted him . Like so many players that did not fit the satisfactory club colours he was left out until we were at that point of desperation. Astle was possibly the greatest header of all time ball at that time and from my research the other teams were terrified of him and what if England had used him they way they could have could have won it for us . Alas not to be but that miss after coming on with one of his first touches cannot be declared as anything incompetent but a snap shot that went slightly wide.

    Brazil definitely deserved to win the tournament, but they showed very poor sportsmanship in this game. Unpunished fouls, like elbowing, cynical leg sweeping tackles - all right under the referee’s nose. They also kept England waiting 5 minutes after half-time, for no apparent reason. If you show up 5 minutes late for a second half in a game with no valid argument, you should be given a goal against you. This referee was either biased toward Brazil, or too intimidated by the partisan crowd to man-up and show the cards for some of the behaviour.

    England started that world cup as favourites. Brazil were reckoned to be not that good in the run up to the tournament. Bobby Moore totally owned Pele for most of the match and Gordon Banks made "The Save of the Century". The video clip doesn't show Francis Lee's close range diving header that the Brazilian goalkeeper Felix (he was no 'cat', for sure) knew nothing about, but the ball hit him and stayed out.... somehow. I felt sorry for Jeff Astle. 99 times out of a 100 he'd have buried that late chance but this one went wide. Amusingly (if you're not English), Alf Ramsey's biggest gripe in the tournament was about fish fingers. The England players loved 'em and a consignment was sent out to Mexico for the players meals..... but dastardly Mexican officials wouldn't let them into the country. Apparently, Alan Ball was really upset about this. He really liked his fish fingers. There were a number of 'iffy' incidents (Gordon Banks getting food poisoning before the Germany match) that left Ramsey feeling that England were being nobbled. We had a very good team and could have retained the world cup........ anywhere other than Mexico.

      @stephenpurves2590 as it was, England lost to West Germany in the 1/4 finals, during which they were denied 2 stone cold penalties. I have watched the game at least ten times, and still can't see how those penalties were not given. Revenge for the 3rd goal in the 1966 final ???

    • @stephenpurves2590
      @stephenpurves2590 Рік тому +1

      @@pablobeany I remember watching the game as an 11 year old, England were in complete control until Ramsey removed Bobby Charlton, this allowed Beckenbau to dominate the midfield. As you mentioned England were denied two stone wall penalties. England v Brazil would have been a great final, however the 1970 Brazil team was without a doubt the most exciting team I ever saw and I don't think England would have beaten them. I saw a good documentary about a re-knowned Scottish football journalist who had flown with the Brazil team to the final. He talked with the players and they all told him that once England had been knocked out they knew there was no other team who were capable of beating them. Which was borne out by the destruction of Italy in the final.
      I would also have to say that Ramsey's attitude towards the local people did nothing to help England's cause. He refused to indulge the locals and pretty much hid the England team out of the way. West Germany on the other hand held open training sessions and players attended civic receptions etc, as a consequence they were well like by the locals and well supported, unlike England.

    • @pablobeany
      @pablobeany Рік тому

      @stephenpurves2590 Jeff Astle missed and open goal in the Brazil match (albeit a snap chance), and Alan Ball put one over that a modern player would possibly have buried, so I don't think there was miles between England and Brazil. All hypothetical of course. Funny - I worked for an Italian company in the late 1980s and they said they were so disappointed in the final they players were pelted with tomatoes when they flew home. I reckoned 4-1 flattered them.

A glorious age none the less. And let's put to the back of our minds the next qualifying disaster - Poland - we'd have beaten them handsomely nine times out of ten and scored upwards of 6 on another night. I`m a Derby County supporter and have been since the 1960`s but my favourite player has always been Bobby Moore he was just immense in this game. I`ve watched many teams play over the years and think this 1970 Brazil team is the best national team I have ever had the pleasure to watch.

    Astle and Brown of WBA were never given enough chances by England, only a handful of caps despite being top flight top scorers of the day consistently (Shame on the FA!!!). Astle was only on for a few minutes in this game.
    Had both Bomber Brown and Astle been given more of a chance we would see better results from them. To expect Astle to score instantly is ridiculous, when he and Brown were shunned for so long by the FA. Verdict: ENGLAND SELECTORS: 1970 = MORONS. AGAIN.

    England were the best side in 1970 in my opinion, imagine if brazil had pele arrested for 3 weeks before this match on a trumped up charge of stealing a bracelet how they would have played also later if jairzino or Gerson had been ruled out with food poisoning that's why we were still the best, we were cheated out of it , it wont come to light maybe in my lifetime. but one day the truth will come out because Gordon banks in 1970 was without doubt the greatest goalkeeper in the world and bobby moore was the greatest defender . had banks played against Germany later we would have won and then gone on to win it again

    • @wonjubhoy
      @wonjubhoy 6 років тому +2

      Brazil of 1970 were the greatest football team of all time and fully deserved to win the world cup. They won 6 games out of 6. In 1970 England lost 2 games out of 4, one of them after being 2-0 up. Moore and Banks were outstanding against Brazil. I watched the Brazil-England game in full and to be fair England would have deserved a draw. It is delusional though to say England were the best team in 1970.

    • @kennybrown4920
      @kennybrown4920 6 років тому

      They were the best team though. The England team hardly slept, Mexicans driving around their hotel all night horns blaring to keep them awake. Definitely not a level playing field.

    • @wonjubhoy
      @wonjubhoy 6 років тому +2

      Why were England the best team? They scored just 2 goals in the group stages. Jairzinho scored more goals in his 1st 4 games at that world cup than what England did. Poor finishing cost them at least a point against Brazil. Against West Germany they lacked the basic defensive skill of defending a high ball. Look at Seeler's free header for the 2nd goal and the cross leading to Muller's winner. It is true that the Mexicans disrupted the English but that did not affect their performance. Alf Ramsay's lack of tact rubbed them up the wrong way. Europeans have traditionally been at a disadvantage playing at world cups in the Americas but Germany showed in 2014 if you are good enough you will win anyway. I still maintain that Brazil were the best team in 1970. Italy were the European champions then which they acheived by beating Yugoslavia in 1968, the team who knocked England out. The West Germans were in the process of building their greatest ever team and one which won the the euros and the world cup in the 1970s. After 1970 England didn't appear at a major competition again until 1980.

    • @lennylaa1686

      so agree with you kevin. I really do think we need to revise this great hero Bobby Moore.
      For me, he consistently made costly errors from 1968 to 1974; there is a whole catalogue on Y/T.
      He was shocking in that 3-2 1970 defeat against the Germans, some dreadful blunders.
      He lived off his 1966 exploits but he made too many crucial mistakes in vital games thereafter.

    • @wonjubhoy
      @wonjubhoy 6 років тому +4

      Thanks Greg. I would be the first person to say Bobby Moore was an outstanding player. In big games you need your best players to deliver. He certainly did this by creating 2 of England's goals in the 1966 world cup final. He had this ability to be cool under pressure. In the Brazil game Moore was again outstanding and it is telling Brazil scored in the first challenge he did not win. If one looks at the footage of Pele and Bobby Moore at the final whistle that speaks volumes as to how highly regarded Moore was by the greatest player ever. I feel West Germany beat England for several reasons. Gordon Banks was absent. England taking off Bobby Charlton allowed Beckenbauer to go forward and turn the game. Putting on Jurgen Garbowski who gave Terry Cooper a roasting was a key factor too. I wouldn't blame Bobby Moore. If I did want to do this then I would point the finger at him for the 2-0 defeat to Poland in 1973.
