    The thing about Bowie Is that nobody was him, except him. Using what he had assembled unto himself, he played whatever version of himself was available. He knew a good thing when he heard it and would "collect it" and put it in his bag of tricks. In many cases, it was other people's talent that he recognized and would gather unto himself to get the result he wanted. THIS WAS his talent. THIS WAS his artistry; assembling the good bits he gathered from the talent he surrounded himself with and then bringing it to life in a song that was written by the process itself. This is why he reinvented himself so often. With every outing he had new tricks in his bag and new talents to work with. He didn't always "write" songs necessarily. He facilitated them into existence in any way he could.

    One of my favorite Bowie Stories is how he came up with the lyrics for "Heroes."
    "Heroes" was recorded at Hansa Studios. In 1977, it was maybe 100-150m from The Berlin Wall. Everyone had left except for Bowie. He was upstairs and looking out a window. Below him were Visconti and partner embracing in the shadow of The Wall.
    East German border guards were in guard towers and armed with assault rifles. Those guards saw Visconti and partner and as well. That was the spark that Bowie needed to write the lyrics for "Heroes."

    • @GeeEee75
      @GeeEee75 16 днів тому

      It would have been helpful to explain who Visconti was and how Bowie interpreted the couple's tryst in relation to the location. But I guess that's what Google is for?

    • @CathyKeating
      @CathyKeating 12 днів тому

      This just completely confirms my sense of what this song is about. Thank you for sharing this background. I KNEW it was about the Berlin Wall and that it was about resistance. A moment of individual resistance and the triumph of that moment. THANK YOU!

    In this analysis video, Fil is really getting to the crux of the matter. Which is to say that when it comes to great natural voices, artistry trumps pitch accuracy - every way you slice it, every single time.

      "Arguably the most important post-war British artist working in any medium" - Andrew Calcutt, in his outstanding (and extremely readable) book "Brit Cult: An A-Z of Modern British Popular Culture", which went into print around the same time as the performance here. Calcutt is right, I think (he is talking about single artists, not bands, so it won't do to say "the Beatles were more important", they had three songwriters and at least two front men)

  • @rogerdale5451
    @rogerdale5451 25 днів тому +27

    ...The moment I realized there was more than I thought, was when he sang with Bing Crosby.
    In this live example, it's barely singing at all, but it's there. It's more talking than singing, but regardless, it's art.
    There's too much to say about David Bowie. Producing DEVO's first album, and much more than I know about him. I miss him.

    My old best friend called me, "I scored tickets for Bowie, Pine Knob Mich. wanna go?". I'm like hell yeah. Did he ever score tickets. Two seats front and center, and two seats 2 rows directly behind that. It was this same 2002 Heathen concert tour as this. Fantastic show. Bowie interacting with the audience and seemed to have a great time with us joking and laughing. Dude was pure class, and put on a Pro Show. He played Hero's exactly like this show

      I saw that tour in Manchester in England at an outdoor venue. I was right at the front and his voice was the best I've ever heard him. I've probably seen him at least a dozen times but that show was special because it poured with rain when all the other acts were on, it was a mini festival. Bowie walked on stage, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Everyone I have spoken to who were there always mention that. He had packed in smoking and his voice improved immensely. He used to get tired and hoarse.

    That’s the thing with this AI technology, pitch correction, etc. David has a style that can morph at any time into whatever he decides to do in that moment. Why would anyone want to mess with that? Well, in David’s case you wouldn’t and I could never imagine him using that technology.

    One thing about this performance is that everyone in the audience knows the song by heart already. Staying on pitch is not at all necessary. It's almost like it doesn't even need to actually happen, because "I am at a David Bowie concert in 2002" is enough.

    Thanks Phil, loved the video and the analysis , so pleased you kept the end comments from Bowie in as well. When the studio guys get in and change things with pitch correction and other games to "improve" things....you lose so much and the chance of that rare performance that's better than any studio version, one that truly touches the soul. I just absolutely felt and understood his final comment.

    Bowie was a performer more than a musician or a singer. What he did with his voice is more than just hittting notes, it was expressing a particular feeling or giving voice to a character. He changed his accent; he sometimes sounded deeper, sometimes more metallic; he could be commanding, or make his voice crack to express fear and uncertainty. Bowie told stories with his music.

    If you can find his performance from The Concert for New York post 9/11, he opened the show. He started with a solo cover of America by Simon and Garfunkel while sitting on the stage floor playing an instrument that looked like a harmonium. Then he went straight into a full rocking performance of this song. Absolutely brilliant.

Mostly just him and his 12 string. I was very impressed with his musicality and feeling. We were very lucky that night to see such a artist. When you poke around enough with what makes a butterfly tick, what you're left with is not a butterfly.
    That said, I understand what you're trying to tell vocal artists. Most of them won't get away with the degree of freedom and instinct Bowie put on display. I don't want to romanticise Bowie; my feelings about his art are personal. I didn't care much for "Heroes" when I first heard it, maybe it scared me, but it's a monumental composition that led to iconic performances. I now get butterflies when I hear it.

    My wife went to Bowie in Philadelphia in maybe 82 or 83?, shortly before I met her in HS China Girl, so whatever that album was, I think Lets Dance. He was in a white linen suit and no makeup. Probably JFK stadium? She was such a lucky duck! Being a teenager in the early 80s, Bowie stood out in a hundred different ways. We were all little kids when FAME was a hit. Unforgettable song--blaring out of the older neighbor's window. Then all the different styles of music he wrote and performed as we grew from little tykes to nearly fully formed humans. He was growing musically right along with us. He was never passé, and so in high school, he had more superb songs and art of the highest caliber. He was so sophisticated in his artistry.

    I come from that generation of Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory and Diamond Dogs. The guy was amazing.

    Who else is surprised David Bowie had an "encyclopedic knowledge" of Elvis Presley though?
    They were so different stylistically.

    Fantastic analysis Fil. I could listen to Mr. Bowie recite a phone book with just his talking voice. Singing was on a level all his own. Also, I have always liked that base line walking up.

    Magnifico vídeo. Muchas gracias. Saludos . Gracias again

    I live in Toronto and got the opportunity to see his costumes and ephemera at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Amazing.
    Strangely it is not his music that stands first and foremost for me, great thought he was.
    I loved his willingness to experiment. His work with dancers in La La Human Steps was stellar. His foray in films like The Hunger and Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence.
    But the greatest thing for me was Bowie's taking MTV to task for their lack of airing the work of Black artists. Bowie stood his ground and I appreciate that.

    Wow, what an amazing vocalist, I never quite thought of him as that. And performer of course.

    Great video as usual, Fil. I always liked Bowie, but I wasn't a super fan, but he was without a doubt the most unique and fearless artist in rock, changing and doing what he wanted, critics be damned. Even people who don't like Bowie, they sure have to respect him, in my humble opinion. Thanks for this video of a spectacular performance of my favorite song of his.

    I saw David when he was Ziggy Stardust. 🥵 Amazing wasn't the word.
    This performance when the backing vocals come in reminded me of 'Labyrinth'. The Fierys, was it? 😁 Brilliant.

    Beginning in 1974 David Bowie was my everything. The UK greatest export imo
    I saw Bowie perform 3 xs, starting with the Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars including Mick Ronson. The last time in Madison Square Gardens, the Diamond Dogs tour. My bedroom walls were papered in Bowie pictures. Music is forever as are all the great artists. ❤
    Thanks Fil.

    David bowie was an amazing vocalist. I've seen videos where he played the guitar and saxophone and other instruments. I am curious as to how well you think he mastered these instruments much like you highlighted the instrument talents of Elvis and the Bee Gees. 😉😉

      He played basic guitar and jr high school level sax.. but being creative he did a lot with it.

    Could you take a look at Al Jarreau doing "Take 5" live? That would be an incredible examination of vocal mastery.
