CANE CREEK KITSUMA COIL

- This one hurt a little. I was sure the Cane Creek shock was gonna be killer, but after 2 shocks having the exact same characteristic flaw I couldn’t continue hoping for a shock absent of the top out issue. The shock feels like theres either air in the damper causing the topout, (its a characteristic that shows up when a damper starts to lose oil and ingest air), or a design flaw in the shock which I struggle to believe. I’m sure they’ve designed the shock well but maybe the final bleed process isn’t being done with enough attention to detail.
That is absolutely normal, some shocks have hydraulic top out design where rebound closes almost completely when it's near full extension, some don't and you get a bit of a top out noise/jolt, how much depends on top out pad quality. Never felt it when actually riding, only when lifting on to something like a roof rack etc. So yes, it feels odd if you are used to shock with hydraulic top out stop, but it's not really detrimental to performance.
That usually is caused when you use way too much preload. Try not to exceed 2 full turns when there is no play in the coil. People tend to use preload when a heavier coil is needed.
This was at a quarter turn of preload
Gotta love the Marzocchi CR Coil; never lets you down!
Been running a Kitsuma Coil on a Banshee Rune V3 and it doesn't clunk. It's has a very noticable and soft return towards the top of it's travel. Really happy with it.
Killer, I’m thinking it just wasn’t bled effectively when it was put together. They come with a slip telling you who completed the build, and both these shocks were from the same person so there may be a procedural issue there potentially.
@@mtbtelly5522 I've got a Kitsuma too,build by Tiffany.
So far so good, Tiffany is known for building very consistent shocks.
Seems like everyone has different experiences with the Kitsuma. I just installed mine and have just been out a quick lap in the local woods.
I have zero top out issues and it is erasing all rocks small to medium and feel very controlled on big hots and compressions - all places were the float x2 is worse by a large margin
So do you recommend CANE CREEK KITSUMA COIL for a rider that has Fox Float X2 and want to switch to a coil? (Me..) I own a YETI SB150 and I want a coil with progressive feel if it make sense due to the switch infinity...
Just put a ttx22m on my bike, feels great. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts
A clunk is junk. That's a shame as I had a DB air on a Knolly Endo and a DB inline air on a Banshee Phantom V2 and both were fantastic. I wonder if it's only a coil shock drama? regardless, it's not acceptable. Keep the honest content coming mate, it's refreshing and real.
Thanks mate, yeah its a bit disappointing but I can see why they’re loved, the performance was certainly there to be squeezed out
Sounds like it's the wrong stroke length what is the trek a 65mm? Maybe a 62.5 or 60mm stroke and getting the play
My kitsuma felt great initially, but within 20 hours developed a large amount of play between the shaft and sealhead plus knocking.
It went in for warranty and had a service bulletin for an under torqued body allowing the inner tube to move, exaserbating the play felt in the sealhead. Additionally the ifp bore was scored. This was replaced with a bladder as per ohlins.
The shock is due back with me next week but I'll sell it. I have a deluxe air that replaced a cracked deluxe coil under warranty plus an ohlins ttx22 I've recently purchased. That knocks on top out also!
This is on a 2020 kenevo, so a bit harsh on rear shocks due to the suspension design.
Edit great channel btw. Very much like astonmtb, one man band with interesting content.
Oh dear, not ideal. Those bikes do destroy shocks though unfortunately. Man you’re the second person to tell me the ohlins clunks at top out, the old Marzocchi looking better and better haha
Yeah the ttx22 does knock on a kanevo it was designed around the levo
I recently put a ttx22m on my bike and have just checked to see if it had the top out thing and it was perfectly smooth at top out. It may depend on the service or something as I have read that other ohlins owners had the same issue as the cane creek.
Yeah it may well be an assembly issue letting a tiny bit of air in before the damper is sealed. I put the ohlins on last night and there an obvious top out there. My luck!
I’ve had a couple Ohlins coils and they do the same, work amazing but just have that clunk, end up running them slower than I’d like to compensate 👎🏻 it’s subtle most people maybe wouldn’t notice when riding but it’s there, like you say just like the old vivid coil!
Ah dammit! Cant get away from it!
I'd go SuperDeluxe Ultimate coil or Ohlins, you'll be happy with the TTX
I Have this coil , no "clunk" it's incredible.
Complains about a clunking noise- produces none.
Raves about his old shock- produces squeaking and squawking.
Also have the top out noise, mine went back to NS for service and it is improved but still present. I have the air Kitsuma also and it does it very slightly also.
Bugger. Good thing the performance is top end
It doesn't use hydraulic topout, like ccdb or dhx2. Make sure you have only minimal preload on the spring.
Yeah I ran mininal preload but had no change. You should be able to dial in a turn or 2 of preload to fine tune your rate without having it affect the shock too much. My thoughts are the damper wasn’t bled complelely free of air and it has a tiny pocket creating the issue. Its exactly the same characteristic as the dhx2 does when it starts to lose oil down the shaft
I have the exact same coil, and I have had it for the better part of a year now. Since I seen your video I have been looking for that top out clunk but can't seem to get it. Now that could easily be that my coil setup is different and a bigger coil or the placement of the suspension. Yours on the Trek is more vertical where as mine is a single pivot that sits into the bottom tube. Maybe that bike's geometry lends toward a air shock
I’m not sure. My Marzocchi coil never tops out on the bike. It may have something to do with the frame design but I think its more a bleed/assembly issue with the shocks. I’ve had a few comments now from owners of this shock, and some topout and some don’t. Still unsure of the actual cause. It would be an absolutely killer shock without the topout issue
I have a the same shock on my 2021 slash.
82kg with a 450lb spring.
it has been nothing but sensational!
Killer, right on the money hey. I feel like that shock was full of potential.
A few have said the topout issues could likely be an ifp/bladder pressure not set correctly. I have the Ttx22 now and it does the same thing.
@Maximilian Ott I’ll make a vid on it.
You need 54x10mm and 40x10mm shock hardware from any suspension shop. And the upper and lower axles from a trek Slash 7 which you’ll have to get from a trek dealer. I don’t know what those part numbers are
I got the double barrel cane creek 2 weeks ago on my ebike, it's an absolute weapon. It did get a performance treatment from NSD prior to purchase though, maybe that's the difference?
The 2nd shock sounded louder.
Yep, louder, but also smoother on trail
Anyone knows if this kitsuma can fit on a Nomad 4 frame? Seems a bit big...
Good to know I just ordered one 😂
This is a known issue. Some CC shocks do knock, some don’t. Apparently no effect on performance but knocking is unacceptable.
Agreed. No effect on performance is a little misleading, as you can not set it for optimal performance because it clunks constantly
The shop I bought it from swapped it out for a TTX22, which also tops out or feels dead if you tune it out, no in between. I definitely would choose the cane creek over the ohlins having now ridden both. I love the tool-less tuning with the damping dials, love the range of damping, but hate the top out.
Yeah it’s a shame. Looks like it’s a lottery. I’ve a cc coil inline that I took a risk with. So far so good and I’m thrashing it here in Pemberton’s steep chunk. Going to fit a cane creek progressive spring and run all compression open; see what that’s like lol.
So, a TTX and a Kitsuma is the same price? In europe the TTX is 50% more expensive. 🧐
The ohlins was $50 more
Holy crap. So hiw much does it retail for?
I got my Kitsuma coil for 580€ (650usd)
Price here for the Kitsuma coil is 630e vat included, the cheapest o can find. Ohlins ttx coil are around 900e
@@pernyberg2816 the Kitsuma was$950 the ttx was $1000
My DVO coil did that on my Glory, had to add air to the chamber and problem solved
Fox springs usually run a lot lower than their advertised rate
Thats proving true, I’ve been testing 3 different springs back to back and the fox is a full spring rate overstated
How can you run a coil shock in the trek slash. With an air shock and no spacers I was harshly bottoming out on smaller drops. Even with 2 spacers I still bottom out regularly, just less harsh.
That just means you’re under sprung fir your weight. I found the Slash excellent with a coil setup
Everyone has a coil on the slash nowadays
Is it possible the shock just needs to be worn in a bit first? Had this on my Dvo jade x coil when I installed it then it went away after a couple rides. Just a thought.
Also - maybe you could contact CC directly and see what they have to say?
Not at all. If your shock is topping out, it’ll end blowing up at some point.
@@thegrey8843 Can you give an explanation for why this is the case?
What's the noise when you first compress after you were adjusting?
Thats just a dirty pivot point clicking breaking friction I’d guess
Do you think performance is different on the il version?
I’m not sure, I haven’t ridden one yet
That’s a dam shame mate! I have the same shock and I don’t notice the top out noise on the meta TR. Must have something to do with the trek suspension design? I’m super happy with the kitsuma shock after some tuning and adding the progressive spring. Which is the only down side as cane creek only make these in white. But the performance is so supple and composed. Anyway the Ohlins shock will be sweet! Looking forward to the review.
Raceonlysprings makes progressive springs in black, and they are very weight accurate.
@@wx2999 good to know cheers I’ll check it out
Ext or Push after that swede stuff I guess?
EXT I’d try, but the Push doesn’t interest me with its chunky body and sharp edges.
Needs a rubber shim
have you figured out how to fix it or why it does that?
Nope. I had it serviced and it still does it, but its not noticable on the trail I don’t think. They said its just part of the design so it is what it is
I honestly think it's the wrong stroke size! Just needs set to what the slash is if the spring is heavier for a 400lbs aswell they have probably went the same with the internals of a Friday afternoon special?! I'd measure it up and see what's going on here or is there an upgrade hack to get an oring or.a softer top out bumper to stop the head smacking off the bottom of the metal body
How does it perform compared to the ttx22?
I spent very little time on this shock, but from the brief time i did get on it, I’d definitely choose the Kitsuma over the ohlins. The ohlins comes with a garbage tune from the factory, where the cane creek gives you easy broad adjustment across the range of comp and rebound. The ohlins came heavily overdamped on comp and way to fast on the hsr preset. And the ohlins came with a bladder pressure much lower than they state in their service manual. At recommended pressure its super harsh and overdamped. At the pressure it came with it hd no compression support and needed to be 2 rates oversprung to find support.
They both do the same topout at full extension as well.
I’d definitely go the cc over the ohlins in future. Only downside is the heavier springs on the cc vs the ohlins
@@mtbtelly5522 thanks for the feedback! I'm going with the air version because specialized bikes like to destroy coil shocks 😭
I had the last version of that coil and snapped the shaft… was a great product apart from that tho.
Nasty! What bike was that on?
@@mtbtelly5522 specialised enduro… the bike yoke got the blame for that… after I did that cane creek added to the shock description… that warranty will be void if used with a bike yoke😂
Landed flat from a pretty good height and she broke😂
@@midlifesendermtb2178 ah yep, specialized specialize in snapping coils haha
@@mtbtelly5522 sold the slash …back on the Kona now
@@midlifesendermtb2178 i been looking closer at the Transition Spire lately. That thing must absolutely rip
ifp over pressure
Hmm. The TTX22 I just got does the same thing. It blows my mind
@@mtbtelly5522 i have 3 ttx22m, and one of them did the top out thing, i went to my suspension center and he put a bit less pressure in the ifp and now its perfect,
Ohlins say between 150-250 psi in the ifp if i remember correctly so you need to put a bit less in it but you have to go to a ohlins certified center
@@Mastereur411 ok, I’ll talk to the guys I got it from and see if that fixes it, cheers!
Could it just be the trek?😂
Nah I’ve had it on my banshee and now my Reign and still the same. Great tunability, but not my preference of rear shock
I will try mine and see if does the same.
I just got my bike out of storage. It is the end of the winter here in Quebec Canada. Mine does not do this at all. No top out. Just very smooth all the way. I wonder if it is your bike ratio that provoke this? 🤔
